Ask nicely for a Ripley from the roboticist, make sure to bring him plasteel (plasma + iron, you have to keep the furnace off while it's loading the ores and then move Plasteel up above plaasma and iron in priority).
Ripley is a mech, it's fucking great. It automatically picks up ores if you have a crate loaded and can be equipped with a Ripley Diamond Drill, which is nearly as fast as a regular one, and allows you to mine three tiles in front of you in one go.
It's just fucking great, and is the tool of the dedicated miner who wants lodsamoney. Regular hand-drill D-Ds are for plebs and shitters who just dig through artifact sites looking for shitty rooms with no actual loot in them and then fuck off and never come back.

You can just go to any solars and crowbar up the glass panels for lots of delicious metal and glass, then you can sell it back to the stupid humans (metal is one of the few things they care about).

I've been drilling on the test server lately. Set up some lockers on a route around medbay and run through shooting energy guns at them. It helps give a feeling for where to click to get the taser to get where you want it to, and how long it takes for the bolt to reach a certain point. It's the best practice you can get for shooting tasers outside of actually chasing down criminal scum, which you should do also.

The thing is, the point of the balloon is to both give you away as a traitor and to gimp you. It's to show that you're robust. In my opinion, it should make you valid, but I understand that it can cause problems with random people just casually carrying it.
