Read the General problems FAQ before asking questions. If you still need help, post your specs (speccy screenshot), OS, emulator version number and details of what's wrong.

Please contribute to the wiki if you discover any inaccuracies or have relevant information to append.

READ THE WIKI BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE:
>Where do I get games
OR
>What is the best emulator for...

Check out the wiki for the emulator you're using if you run into trouble, there may be a solution there too, often including recommendations for optimal game settings.

Remember to submit bug reports or shit won't get fixed.

News:
Retroarch now has netplay functionality for most cores. Get the latest nightly.
Cemu 1.7.0.d is out - check the wiki for info on getting games, etc.

Remake cut out the most terrifying track in the whole game. This track made the crow room what it was. No amount of generic orchestral music can replicate the terror induced by the original crow room.

No fucking shit
REmake is better than the original and the definitive way to experience RE1.

Remake's soundtrack was BORING and it had no tension. The Yawn fight was also pathetically easy despite being 10 times flashier.
>>
>>167018513
>The Yawn fight was also pathetically easy
The entirety of RE1 is pathetically easy. How is that a point against REmake when its actually more challenging by design than the original?
>>
Do you think your emulation of old games will have made one whit of difference in your life by the end?
>>
If anyone can figure out how to dump the DSi BIOS files needed for proper DSi emulation on NO$GBA, that would be really nice.

BIOSDSI7.BIN, BIOSDSI9.BIN, different than the DSfat/DSlite BIOS files already available online (and the wiki).

They're needed because of some crypto scheme on DSi dumps. Contain console specific keys, so dumping them from a 3DS puts it at risk of a ban. It's alright if it's a DSi because Nintendo already shut all online services for it.
>>
>>167018318
>definitive
That would imply it's superior in every way, which it isn't. REmake should be treated like a different game. Besides, you can finish both games in like 15 hours al together on your first, so it isn't some big undertaking to play both.
>>
>>167018720
>Do you think your emulation of old games will have made one whit of difference in your life by the end?
Yes I'm taking revenge of all the cool kids who for each console every generation and tons of games and then were bored and tired of them.

Jokes on you kid, now it's me who is bored and tired of those games, ahahahah!

No I think your argument of challenge is tied to the fact they added one additional step to getting rid of zombies that you only need to employ a finite number of times. Crimson Heads don't make it harder, they make it longer without really adding anything.

You also have knowledge of those paths because you have a fucking map. You don't need to clear anything but the paths to the safe rooms really.

I'm inspired by this article about Pac-Man:

The parts about the game mechanics and the AI of the four ghosts is really amazing. I'm still amazed at how simple and elegant the game is. It even explains bugs in the game's logic.

Just want to obtain a similarly detailed understanding of my favorite games. In my opinion every platformer should play as fluidly as Mega Man X4, so I'd like to understand how it works. I'm a programmer so I have some familiarity with assembly languages (through compilers) and I'm familiar with the task of debugging but I've never reverse engineered anything before and certainly never touched a computer like the playstation.
>>
>>167081730
Its not a small task especially for something as extensive as that article.
I can't find anything about Megaman X4-6 in terms of hacks so you'll probably have to start from scratch.
You could start off by finding what file does what in the ISO itself.

>I'm mostly interested in game code though.
What do you mean by that?
The only way you can get an estimate of the code is by being intimately familiar with the game's behaviors. The game's design decisions aren't going to be hidden in the code.

Thats not reverse engineering is.
You won't find any code unless you have the source code of the game itself. Your best bets are estimations backed by data observation. You don't even need programming knowledge for what is essentially a design doc.
>>
>>167083989
>You won't find any code unless you have the source code of the game itself.

Wouldn't disassembling parts of the game provide me with the assembly code for the program running on the playstation?

>Your best bets are estimations backed by data observation. You don't even need programming knowledge for what is essentially a design doc.

I don't understand. Do you want me to do experiments within the game? What do you mean?

Get an emulator with a good debugger. I never debugged anything other than PC but the principle and basic debugger functions should be the same, for me it's hard to imagine a debugger without breakpoints, register view, code view, memory view, etc, it all should be there. Obviously when setting up breakpoints you need to identify relevant code or data. You probably can use save states as well, great advantage of emulation.

You might also try downloading leaked IDA Pro and generate the pseudocode which speeds up analysis for some (this is the #1 tool in the industry assuming you know how to make it useful for you, I don't), not sure if it does support the architecture though. This is a bit different from using a dynamic debugger, it's all static analysis.

The actual reversing process is not something that can be easily summed up in a few sentences, it's just comes with practice and you develop the intuition for these things. First of all, you need to know what you're looking for and rule out the irrelevant stuff because even going through all code in a small NES game is just too much for human brain. When I look for things in Windows software, I use intermodular calls as points of reference when looking for code that interests me - the most basic example, let's say you want to crack software that displays a message box when not registered, put a breakpoint on MessageBox, when hit go up the call stack to find the conditional jump that decides whether to display it or not. Now, I imagine there's no such thing on PSX because it just uses interrupts (never done close to the metal debugging so I might be talking out of my ass) - you probably need to look for those. Though maybe it uses some official Sony libraries.

Bear in mind I'm still a newbie myself.
>>
>>167083989
>Thats not reverse engineering is.
How so?

You can figure out game logic from disassembled code, it's just a bit time consuming. Hell, people have disassembled pokemon games for example: https://github.com/pret/pokered
>>
>>167084878
Thanks for the instruction. I feel as though I just need to get started learning this useful skill.

I figured I'd just start with seeing what variables I can find and what code manipulates them, what calls that code, and so on indefinitely. I love reading source code (something that's really hard even in high level languages) and I have patience. Let's see what will come of it.
>>
>>167085219
Documenting assembly line by line will kill your soul in the long run. Efficient reversing means making a lot of assumptions about the code - if it's going to save you some time, just run the function and try to deduce what it does from its arguments and result. You might guess wrong what a function does, but let's say you guessed right what other functions that call or precede it do - it's going to give you a better picture and you will be able to correct that wrong guess.
>>
>>167085804
I won't be doing every line not only because of time constraints but also because my knowledge is still limited. I'm certain I wont be able to fully understand everything.

I want to get a general idea of the control flow within the game so I'll be following jumps to see where they go

I wonder why there are so few hacks of Playstation games when compared to stuff such as SNES? Someone hacked Mega Man X3 to make Zero fully playable. He must have extensively reprogrammed the game. Is there something about the playstation that makes it harder?

That's hypocritical. Don't cry about others violating copyright, if you're also violating copyright. Since when does quality have anything to do with 'unique copyright' ? If you copy crappy code, you still have to abide by the rules. Kind of pathetic that Oman's archive had more accurate code for audio than m64p's HLE rsp.

HLE is significantly faster than LLE, and it's not like GLideN64 has unreasonable system requirements.

HLE is only useful for toasters, which cannot run GLideN64. Unless you really care about getting 400 VI/s instead of 200. It's way more efficient to just focus on improving LLE.

>What looks bugged besides the 2D misalignment caused by rendering above native resolution?
It looks awful though. Are you sure it's caused by the above native resolution? It reminds me of Ogre Battle's issue. It bugs me enough to the point where I'll just stick with Angrylion's for these kind of games.
>>
>>167102360
>HLE is only useful for toasters, which cannot run GLideN64.
Any GPU capable of GLES2 or above or GL3.3 or above can run GLideN64. And HLE allows stuff like per-pixel lighting. And faster with no accuracy cost is always better.
>It looks awful though. Are you sure it's caused by the above native resolution?
What specifically looks awful? 2D elements in N64 games tend to misalign above native resolution. This leads to classic problems like mouths "popping" in Wonder Project J2. There is a hack to alleviate the issue for some games, but it's disabled by default.

I forgot about crappy mobile devices.. Any desktop with GL 3.3 should be capable of running LLE at full speed.

>What specifically looks awful? 2D elements in N64 games tend to misalign above native resolution.
The weird lines are off-putting. I feel silly now though. Never thought to try native res on Glide64, to see if that fixes the issue I noticed when briefly testing that game.

>And HLE allows stuff like per-pixel lighting
While it sounds neat, but does it actually look better? I guess I should try it out sometime.

>And faster with no accuracy cost is always better.
While I agree, I get the impression most people don't care about getting 400+ VI/s instead of 200. Also, HLE code wasn't entirely well written, so there usually is some accuracy cost at this point.

Some cool JRPGs/strategy games you can recommend me, /emugen/? I'm not a fan of final fantasy (numbered FFs) for example, but fire emblem and final fantasy tactics were pretty good.

My problem with final fantasy is that the plot is very uninteresting and bothersome to me, nonstop cutscenes that are often unskippable, etc.. The gameplay isn't even that bad. It's just not my style of delivering a story.

FFXII

Disgaea and spin-offs
>>
>>167113330
Gungnir, Tactics Ogre PSP, Tactics Ogre GBA, Jeanne D'Arc

These all tend to be somewhat similar to FFT but tend to put a different spin on the formula in one way or another. I wouldn't say their stories are as good as FFT's but then I wouldn't say that of many games period. Not sure how skippable the cutscenes are but emus do have fast forward too.

If you remove the strategy aspect and just go JRPG, Radiant Historia might have some appeal since its main is far more down to earth and believable than the typical FF main. The combat does have some aspects of strategy at play due to the attack grid combos and the like but it's far more like a typical JRPG.

I think Gonetz should prioritize fixing regressions. I can't be bothered playing a game of whack-a-mole and collect various versions of GLideN64 just to play some random games, due to regressions. Thankfully there's only like 2 games I care about, where GLideN64 is clearly the best overall plugin (Vigilante series).

>Multiple games have been fixed over the past few months.

>>
>>167113914
Actually hardware in real life is extremely remotely non-deterministic, so a tiny chance of non-determinism should be built into every emulator, because a few hundred atoms theoretically could behave in an absolutely aberrant manner and cause your console to output something for a fraction of a millisecond that it was not intended to.
>>

Well, this was about as good as I expected it would be. Lot of impressive boss fights and excellent music. Hard to believe it came out when I was a kid because its still very impressive today. Makes me want to play Fusion and Zero Mission again. I'm not sure if those games were as incredible as I think they were after playing Super Metroid.

My only issues were having to choose items with select and the slow horizontal movement on jumps.

Died about 8 times. 6 to Phantoon who I could not figure out. Once to Draygon, once to Ridley, and once to Mother Brain. Surprised that it challenged me but I wasn't looking for every single item. I imagine I'll do another run to find everything.

Question for people who played this in the 90s - what was your opinion of it?

What did it do well or differently in 1994 that hadn't been done in other games?

>What did it do well or differently in 1994 that hadn't been done in other games?
As I was about 4 years old when I've played it, my POV is kinda limited.
But I remember that I couldn't sleep that well because of its eeriness. Which is why both my big brother and father started to watch me as I played through and they helped me with this gesture quite a lot.
But even back then I loved how precise the gameplay was for the tricks like the wall jump. I can still remember how proud I was of getting the hang out of the wall jumps that I jumped down the pit with the etecoons just to do it again.
It was just great for little 4yo me.

What's the point of having all those cores if all of them are outdated? What's the benefit of using RA if none of it is up to date with the latest standalone?
>>
>>167141130
1) I don't develop RA. I very occasionally contribute to it. Like the Win32 drag and drop stuff and some of the shader code. And the audio DSP stuff.
2) I don't live off patreon dollars (and I am not allowed to, due to the massive hassles with reporting income each few weeks). I live off a part time job though these days, in the past I used to live off mainly a government pension.
3) Skeletonkey and romjacket are not mine, I just host that subdomain for the person that does.
4) back in the day I did major Linux port work for Glide64, work on VBA-M and some other N64 stuff. I contributed some shader stuff to Snes9x though and did the very first shader implementation for bsnes (back when byuu and I were friends. back then shit like Reshade didn't exist so I made my own implementation of reshade to add shaders to emulator plugins and bsnes.)

Not all of it is outdated, just a few notable cores such as PPSSPP and Saturn.
RA has the best solutions to some forms of emulation, such as GPlusGX and Mednafen-PSX-Hardware which is kept up to date and has improvements over the original.

Played it in the 90s and it was great back then. It did exploration so much better than any other game I had played up until that point, as well as atmosphere. It removed most of the weaknesses of the original Metroid by making every room feel unique and allowing you to carry multiple beams at once, having more impressive and interactive boss fights, etc. while amplifying its strengths.

Also I always swapped the choose item button away from select. Probably swapped run to L or R and used that button to swap items.

You can't just assume that someone is going to find out about this shit at the right time, or even have the money for it.
This guy clearly didn't give enough of a shit to try and sell it through proper channels and if he just gave it to his retard son then he didn't make jack off it anyway, so $75 is a better offer than what he got.

He doesn't have to care about your scene bullshit. YOU have to go there and convince him to actually do anything if you care that much. What do you do? Oh hey let's tell him to go kill himself and send hatemail to his account.

So anybody who stumbles into junk that happens to be "valuable" to a bunch of internet faggots is suddenly supposed to take time out of his life to find a "proper home" for it? Fuck off

>he just gave it to his retard son

LOL I'd gladly fuck over a thousand "emudevs" to make my son happy any time. >>

His son is actually the only real man in that lot of pathetic manchildren. He literally told them all he wasn't going to sell it even after being "informed" of its importance. I hope he tells them he won't be making an "image" either nor lets anyone else get their hands on it.

It is perhaps, in a way, a good thing that this happened, as it may draw the attention of a wider audience who may now bring attention to further similar findings and occurrences, where something might be salvaged.

I feel that you are being a bit of an arse though, saying that it is emudevs' or the community's fault for not seizing an opportunity that, quite frankly, it most probably was not aware of.

>Most of the end users didn't really understand our priorities and there were lots of negative posts related to not implementing hardware mipmapping and it grew out of control as we kept releasing our progress reports. There were even some rumours spreading that hardware mipmapping is impossible without a rewrite of texture cache. I mean, it's obvious that it's still shit thanks to it being a new thing (which also is complex at the same time) but one shouldn't dismiss a bug because of it.
Why the fuck do they do this? I mean, why not just have a list of all bugs no matter how old the implementation it's based on? It can only help them to know what games are affected by a game because then you know what to fix to make all of those work correctly.
>>
>>167236641

>>
>>167236641
>I mean, it's obvious that it's still shit thanks to it being a new thing (which also is complex at the same time) but one shouldn't dismiss a bug because of it.
All emulators do this. If you add a new feature that is completely broken, you don't submit bug reports for it. They know it's broken. They don't need to be told it is broken.

For example, the Vulkan backend in Xenia is completely fucked. (And also the default backend now.) There's no point submitting bug reports saying, "Everything is fucked."
>>
>>167236128
Most plugins don't handle F-Zero correctly.
>>
>>167236641
PCSX2 is very odd about bug reporting. You can't do it direct to git, you have to go via their forums and even then they want you to do a lot of annoying busywork to report stuff.
That said, everything about the PSX emulation implemented currently is probably bugs, so they'd be overwhelmed by bug reports. They may as well advance the emulator to a state where lots of stuff is playable before opening it to bug reports so they can squash the smaller stuff later.

>>
>>167236974
I mean, I can understand your point.
But if they don't want to have bug reports about it, they shouldn't have put it into master yet.
They can easily create a branch that's solely for PSX stuff, doesn't even matter if it's a public branch or private.
And then just keep quiet about it until it matured enough. Saying "it's new so we don't want bug reports" is just a shitty attitude.
Knowing something is shit isn't the same as knowing why something is shit. And being a new feature doesn't excuse it being shitty. So they take responsibility and take the bugs seriously.
But those are just my 2 cents.
>>
>>167237386

yeah pcsx2 is so shit that sony used it their own emulators..

if pcsx2 is abandoned, it's very likely there will never be another ps2 emulator at the same level. MAYBE in another 5-10 years play will get somewhere, but I have doubts that it will be as playable as pcsx2 is now.

I doubt many people will start working on new ones (how many attempts have there been? Maybe 5 or 6?), the complexity of the system is high enough for most to not even want to bother, and since it's already been done to a decent level, the incentive is much lower. you're not exactly breaking new ground by working on a ps2 emulator

>>
>>167250445
I don't know.. Maybe if there are games on ps4 that hit edge cases in pcsx2.

they do use an interesting method to increase resolution while avoiding compatibility problems.

they basically render at native res multiple times, but with subpixel shifts in 4 directions to use as extra samples. resolution isn't as high as pcsx2 can go, but it avoids any issues from going above native
>>
>>167250938
That's a weird way of doing it. Wouldn't that cause terrible strain on the CPU?
>>
>>167251023
>Wouldn't that cause terrible strain on the CPU

Well, in most cases it shouldn't. Though in the case of the PS2 perhaps, because geometry transformation is done by CPUs.

Apparently they got it fast enough that it's not a problem, or they've been able to offload the task to the GPU.

Either way, it doesn't surprise me much. Sony hired probably the best coder pcsx2 ever had about 5 years ago.

I changed processors recently and earlier when I had an AMD one Dolphin would give false FPS readings when playing shit like Spider Man 2 and Super Mario sunshine. It would run the game at around 15 FPS and show it as 100% speed despite that not being the case.

most people won't bother with pcsx2 because of much "messy code", which I take to mean that mostly they're not motivated enough to deal with the difficulty of emulating a more complex console.

if someone like gregory, who was barely a programmer at all according to his own words can come in and work their way up to making big improvements within a year, despite the messy codebase, then i consider it mostly a bullshit excuse.
>>
http://pcsx2.net/281-q4-2016-progress-report.html
>>even this basic function was not emulated before as there wasn't much priority on getting mipmapping to work on hardware renderers.
>wasn't much priority
Bullshit.
>Globally, I think the biggest remaining issue is the texture cache (half screen/offset in rt/mipmap).
http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-GSdx-1-0?pid=474527#pid474527

>>Most of the end users didn't really understand our priorities and there were lots of negative posts related to not implementing hardware mipmapping and it grew out of control as we kept releasing our progress reports. There were even some rumours spreading that hardware mipmapping is impossible without a rewrite of texture cache. To shut them all up,
This right here. It was the fucking devs that said it. What condescending jerkoffs.
>Gregory has already said it's impossible with the current texture cache

And not only that, it's true. You would need a texture cache rewrite to do proper mipmapping. As stated just below that complete lie:
>>Note: The current implementation of hardware mipmapping isn't totally accurate, the current implementation replaces the pointer of the base layer with the LOD min layer, assuming that it contains valid data. While the current hardware mipmapping implementation isn't really ideal

Well, go ahead

Quantity over quality or vice versa doesn't really matter with gaming systems. The total number of good games is all that's important.

For example:

System A has 4,000 total games, 50 good games, and 2,000 bad games.

System B has 500 total games, 30 good games, and 250 bad games.

Which system would you rather have?

>>167262080
In some ways yes. It was also quantity and quality.
PS2 had some extremely experimental titles and wasn't afraid to push boundaries and invent loads of new genres.
Let's look at just the shit I have on my hard-drive, it's all stuff that I want to play and therefore that I think is probably going to be good. I never had a PS2 as a kid. This doesn't include many RPGs really because I only really play one RPG at a time. Some stuff is just there so I remember to play it eventually.
We have racing games that weren't on Gamecube because it didn't sell as well.
JRPGs out the ass like Dark Cloud, Final Fantasy, Steambot Chronicles. GC had like Lost Kingdoms and that's all.
Fighting games that never came to GC.
Destroy All Humans. Unique, fun and funny.
Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, never on GC.
Probably a lot more shooters than the GC had.
Character Action Games or whatever you want to call them, like Genji, DMC, Onimusha. Other beat-em-ups like urban reign and a lot more fighting games like Tekken, more SoulCal than GC.
Katamari Damacy - Great and entirely unique.
Horror games like ResEvil, Silent Hill, Haunting Ground, whereas GC had just Eternal Darkness.
Stealth action games like Tenchu and MGS2 and MGS3.

Etc. Etc.

Gamecube is the king of 4 player multiplayer with games like Smash, Mario Kart and Mario Party, but PS2 excels in singleplayer and 2 player co-op experiences.

And yet if someone tells you Gigli is a better movie than the Godfather you'll be easily able to express why that's untrue. You can tell me why Super Mario World is a better game objectively than Superman 64. If you think preference is meant to be all about subjectivity than you're ignorant. And no, the counter-argument is not, "well there are some people who prefer Superman 64 to Super Mario World."

People like you are too afraid to attempt to quantify anything because you don't want to use your brain to think for more than 5 seconds.

They do have more coders, so I understand why Dolphin is doing better in that regard. I still dislike the idea of shilling Nvidia and telling everyone to just buy Nvidia cards..

Despite my critique of PCSX2, i still respect it more than Dolphin. No shader stutter BS and they actually have a good software renderer.

Mipmapping is like antialiasing. When done poorly it looks like shit. But without it, games are a shimmery mess. For it to look good you also need anisotropic filtering. In PCSX2's case, as always, things generally need more work before they work.

That's just how Intel rolls, they are a hardware company stuck doing software. I bet if they could drop software all together they would do it without second thoughts.

So someone gave me a save to VPW2. How can I get it running, I'm kinda new to Project64?
>>
>>167308676
Please don't talk about things you don't understand.
>>
>>167310569
sounds like you are the one who doesn't know what he is talking about and are trying to hide it by avoiding making any point
Its ok to be wrong m8

The fuck are you talking about?
Its a very obvious depth emulation issue. D3D plugins do not have depth emulation because it fucks with other things on it.
Here is the same issue happening on the OpenGL plugin with Depth emulation disabled despite blending set to high.

Nothing post process at all.
>>
>>167311740
Nigger I was talking about the blending unit accuracy setting in PCSX2
The issue does not have anything to do with that.

The object isn't supposed to have transparency at all.
This is a blending issue

Anon, you're the best.
>tfw I can emulate a PS3 game at fullspeed on my fucking laptop

The random stutters are annoying, but otherwise this literally runs perfectly. That's not a problem with my setup either.
>>
>>167307974
No, things being transparent when they shouldn't is a blending issue.

>>167311629
the phone here is a depth problem

understand the difference?
>>
>>167312237
>the phone here is a depth problem
The entire screenshot is nothing but depth issues you retard

I even provided you a direct example of a blending issue
are you fucking blind?
>>
>>167312237
>things being transparent when they shouldn't is a blending issue
PCSX2 uses blending only in case of post processing effects
Stop spreading disinfo to confuse others just because you can't accept being wrong.

yeah that's exactly what i would expect.

does it really run that well?

>>167312956

The transparency is a depth issue and not a blending one
>>
>>167285695
Submit a bug report if it's that much worse, or play around with your GL settings to reduce accuracy but increase performance.
>>
>>167260012
I'm not sure what you were getting at.

Change your core options. You need to set the renderer to vulkan.

Any of ya'll up for netplaying some Game Boy games later today?

I have no idea if there are actually any good multiplayer games for it but it'd be fun to test.

>>
>>167313984

Isn't it primarily focused for emulating local multiplayer?
i.e. nes/snes/etc and not gba which requires linking multiple devices?

I don't think GBA is going to work with RAs netplay system in mGBAs present form, not that I can say for certain.

But what I had in mind was booting up some GB/GBC kusoge with TGB Dual which should apparently work.

using cemu for first time here.
I unpacked mario maker using Wii U USB Helper and now I'm just wondering, do I unpack the update for it anywhere specific, or just the same folder?
>>

You have to point cemu to it. Stick it wherever you like.

Citra is the only emulator worth anything but the development on it is relatively slow.

The fact that its the only 3DS emulator worth using or the fact that it has seen less commits than PCSX2 in the last week?

I'm probably gonna get lynched for saying this, but is there any way to get rid of the flickering and slowdowns while emulating NES games?
>>
>>167323867
FCEUX allows you to do both but overclocking to remove slowdowns causes some bugs.
>>
>>167323867
Yes, most recent emulators have an option to remove sprite flickering (a few games rely on that though so you can break some visuals), removing slowdown though is reserved to a few emulators like some versions of FCEUX and Mesen.

Well, netplay between Windows and Android using the mGBA core seems fine.
Although it was single player so at most it was being mirrored to player 2.
