Guys I need your help.
I am thinking about changing bonuses from governments.
>first they are less restricting, for example pacifists can't go into military governments but that its all
Bonuses are for governments not ethics and cross with each other aka Military Republic get Military and Democratic/Republic bonuses plus small flavor bonus(cheap army upkeep).

Republics/Democracies
>happiness
>cheap leaders -people government
>empire leaders capacity - anyone can lead
Oligarchy, elites and greed
>bonus credit minerals
>leader skill
>leader pool(more choice)
Autocracy/Dictatorship
>bonus core systems
>edict cost
>edict duration
So democracies are for smaller nations and have plenty of leaders, when autocracies are wide with less bullshit. Oligarchy is between but I am not sure about their bonuses.

Military, pretty simple more cheaper NAVY
>navy limits
>navy upkeep
>ship cost
Materialist, more research
>res speed
>research alternatives
>leader exp gain
Spiritualist aka spread fast and hard to subvert
>ethos divergence
>planet border extrusion
>less food consumption
Pacifists
>more core systems
>more food productions, peaceful agrarians
>happiness, happy hippie

Also generic governments could use some bonuses or they could just get stronger basic Rep/Oligarchy/Autocracy bonuses.

Any more feedback or help?
Or cute animal pictures - sadly it looks like I can't get both.
>>
>>167005301
How would you even code that?
>>
>>167005301

Its easier to rally people against big bad ruler and its easier to take your bad feelings against him.

Well so what you propose?
Also because government can change in peaceful way in USA you didn't see revolution or uprising.
Imagine if Obama was a ruler for life and Hilary his designated heir(or something).
People can vote and even if its mostly illusion of choice it keeps some happy. Or at last not angry enough to start revolution.
Autocracies get +core systems Wide
Democracies get bonus happiness Tall

>>

Fucking adorable.

So yeah, back on topic, democracies just get bonus points for being, well, democracies. I get it.

I just naturally assumed that they were like Communists democracy, where you can vote freely but there's only one choice.
>>
>>167006116
America is still functioning because it's a democracy. If Trump was dictator for life, and we were developing life extension drugs so quickly that we were looking forward to another 100 years of this shit, there would be a civil war.

Democracy doesn't make people 'happy', but it makes people less likely to form factions, hence a mechanical happiness bonus. Democracy means you can (in principle) fix your government's problems merely by voting, so a happiness bonus makes a lot of sense.

R&I is a notorious /gsg/ shitposter. He makes thread like 50 posts before the bump limit so he can use the same infopic and leave the same hypocritical first post of "Reminder to report and ignore shitposters".

He is also known for purging the /gsg/ infopic of things on purely arbitrary whims because he personally doesn't like the game. His very presence encourages shitposting in /gsg/ and he literally never gets banned despite pissing on the rules regularly.

Now never talk about him in this thread again because I don't want /gsg/ shitposting to come here too.

Communism has devolved into a pseudo-religion even before a proper space age, so it could be classified as a theocratic form of government.
>>
>>167007701
But I thought that communism was specifically anti-religion and pro-fedoratipping?
>>
>>167007783
That's because traditional religions are a kind of competition. In order to establish a communist society, you have to change the moral principles of society in the same way that religion does, so you have to wipe out the old religions.

Western secularism is a materialist movement that usually seeks to replace spiritualism with utilitarian values. It is also incompatible with communism, which in the west has adopted a very spiritualist, anti-rationalist postmodernism.
>>
>>167007783
it's anti-religion but it replaces objectively true religious values with objectively true communist values, the apocalypse with the mythical communist utopia, spiritual leaders with marxist visionaries etc
it also fights religion because of course it wants more believers for itself
basically it's a cult of fedora
>>
>>167008196
That's pretty scary.
>>
>>167007783
Think about Party(nomenclature) as priest caste.
They have exclusive rights to interpret Holy Scripture not some dirty peasant/worker.

It even fits well into the vanilla governments. Stalinism relies heavily on 5 year plans (edicts), and ethics divergence is reduced via NKVD, which encourages conformity. The grand mausoleum could be thought of as a major gulag.

Stone Age primitives have a chance to become pops of Bronze Age primitives every so many years. It's such an arbitrary distinction that I'm convinced the devs couldn't decide on which system was better (stone age Pops or just a modifier that can spawn pops), then decided to just implement both systems.

The fuckers will always become Bronze Age after I've built a colony ship with the express purpose of building fucktons of Society research.

Pre-FTL civs being pops or planetary modifiers*

So what exactly determines a species pre-sentient? Assuming the others I found elsewhere made it to bronze age (ie, don't show up as P-S), these ones I'm certain haven't since I'm on the planet with them and they don't show up on the species tab as one thing or another.

Why is Stellaris' early game so boring?
>>
>>167026082
Space is fundamentally boring. It's just literally empty space. The only way to make it interesting is to interact with ayys, but for balance reason they decided to make spaceports have over 1000 power, so there isn't even a useful way to interact with them in the early game.

No it isn't, at least not Marxism
Marxism basically says Religion is the Opiate of the masses...but like everyone knows, you don't just take away the opium when you want to wean someone off. You need to get rid of his addiction, his 'need' for it first. The point of marxist theory regarding this is that religion fundamentally stems from scarcity and uncertainty, so you pray to someone more powerful than you to give you the things you lack and give these things in a more certain manner. Therefore, if scarcity and the income gap is abolished, then you don't lack things and you're not uncertain about your future anymore so religion 'naturally' withers away on its own.

Horatio AI has similar problems, but at least you can use that forced happiness law to mitigate the disaster that is fucking Dictatorship.

I kinda like the idea behind dictatorship - it gives you more control over the political power in your empire, allowing you to enact powerful laws without paying an absurd pile of money promoting a certain party first. But you also have to accept responsibilities when things go wrong. And oh boy they go fucking wrong all the time. Any random event that changes your political affinity is like a stab in the gut.
It's made worse by the fact that you have to research a pretty late game tech to change your government and by lack of happiness buildings in the game.
In that screenshot I actually had fucking transwine in that system, which gives a huge boost to happiness, a transwine boosted system upgrade and it still wasn't enough.

>>167054652

>>
>>167054723
>Era 3 tech
>late game

I personally went with setting the multiplier to 1 and the penalty itself to 3 to balance out against the bonus of 2 for having representatives in senate.
It isn't as unbalanced as it sounds because you still are alienating anywhere from 1 to 5 other parties.
>>
>>167054940
I could've sworn that tech was on T4. Are you sure you aren't mistaking it with the one that gives you colonial rights building? Or maybe I am. When it comes to approval stuff I remember T1 having supermarket, T2 having nothing, T3 having Colonial Rights and T4 having wellbeing foundation and government changes.
Eh, whatever, tech tree is all sorts of fucked right now (mostly due to not having enough techs), I'm sure they'll fix it eventually.
Despite my bitching I'm really happy with how far this game progressed, it looked like total shit when I first played the alpha.

But that fits way less with the phonetic structure. "im" is the core vowel of the syllable followed by a nasal sound, which can then be mapped into catspeak by morphing the core into "nya", followed by a nasal "n", like in the original structure.

Mapping "ium" to "nyaa" fits less because you're transforming a diphthong into a monophthong, and then dropping the nasal by instead lengthening that vowel. I guess it would work if you map "ium" to "nyan", and then pronounce the y more like a vowel (ni-an) instead of the usual (njan), but just "nyaa" is too far removed for my taste and imho doesn't really sound like a convincing feline dialect.

I think 20% of each members naval capacity was combined into a federation fleet, under control of the president. So with large federations, it will take a long time before you get control of it again, but it also means that you will have control over a very large fleet. And I think you didn't have to pay the maintenance, which is pretty neat.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=810929902

They're pretty fucking huge, I think mine have capped armor at 90%, an absolutely insane amount of hull and shielding, about as much firepower as 1/4 of my fleet cap would provide, 3 support modules so they can FTL trap, inhibit shields and inhibit fire rates all for the low low price of nearly 6k minerals.

Big investment for something that can't move but they actually hold ground like a big defensive fortress should. I built one at a hyperlane chokepoint one of my enemies had to use to get to me, it was winning the fight with half their 35k strength fleet destroyed before they emergency FTL'd out.

Basically pure RNG. You either get the Stone Age primitives modifier, a Bronze- or higher -Age empire, or Pre-Sentients.

There's an anomaly you can find that spawns pre-sentients on the planet, normally described as "something moves with a purpose..." and sometimes gives you things besides Pre-sentients.

It's pretty frustrating, because if you build your premise on finding and uplifting them you'll never find any.

I feel like some of the Craver's mechanics needed to be reworked for the new political and pop system. Having to manually segregate my Craver pops to be on separate planets from other dudes isn't very fun.
>>
>>167133261
This.

>>
>>167135684
You can just segregate them by system with starports once you get a system to level 2.
>>
>>167137430
Yeah, I do that, usually sending away cravers themselves to get that population bonus from minors and conquered people. Still would be nice if cravers got some sort of unique ability that would let them eat an existing pop for extra happiness and food or something. Might work well with their theme. Considering that Horatio did get a tech that lets em turn any pop into Horatio I think something like this it might happen eventually.
>>
>>167139676
Faction unique techs are planned, just not implemented right now.
>>

Rather, I should say that faction unique techs that you can research are planned. There are a bunch that are quest rewards.
>>

I hope they rework the positioning of ship hull techs too. It makes sense for someone like Horatio to have them in Empire segment, since they are basically made for dickwaving Horatio's aesthetic superiority, but for someone like Sophons it would feel better in science sector, or Trade sector for Lumeri.

But Stellaris can't do it.
Or, rather, different species in Stellaris are, functionally, almost totally indistinguishable from each other, such that there is no *point* in ever "dealing" with a certain population.
Purging and resettling is always and in all possible condition of things strictly worse than just leaving everyone you conquer to stew and bitch.
>>
Question, in Stellaris, is it better to heed the tile bonuses, or just build whatever the fuck you need? I'm torn between building planets specifically for a single purpose and respecting every resource tile to the letter. I normally default to the latter, but I'm starting to doubt if that's the best thing to do.
>>
>>167147031
Welcome to the only depth Stellaris has.
>>
>>167147031
Depends on the situation. Tile bonus is better when you need everything, ignoring tile bonus is better when you need something specific. If you have a planet that goes heavy on one specific ressource, or has a good planet modifier on it like +25% minerals, it can definitely be worth it to ignore everything else (except food, obviously) and build only that ressource while stacking ressource modifiers on that planet (e.g. a planet filled with power plants and the capacity overload edict).

But I don't think that's worth doing on a planet that isn't already heavily skewed towars energy. The edict gives you 15% bonus production, and unless you already have really strong power plants, you will usually gain a higher profit from using the tile bonus instead, at least if it's +2.

However, an advantage of having everything together on one planet is that it's easier to control your gains from sectors that way. You can at best get 75% of minerals and Energy from your sectors, so if you have all your energy on a core planet, while putting research focused planets into your sectors, you will get a higher return (since research is not based on tax rate).

How would you guys like to change the combat system to make it more challenging/less boring in stellaris? Not taking into account any existing mods.

First of all there needs to be a system of supply lines with a throughput based on the diffrent starsystems in goes through and the range from closest supply base. For example a system that has massive asteroid belts because it had it's planets destroyed could have a lower supply throughput. Temporal or permanent supply bases could be built on any planet, moon, asteriod. Militairy stations should also function as supply bases.

If star systems had certain logistical values based on what kind of star system it is. )How hazardous it is for example.) You could also limit the amount of ships that can engage effectively in that system. A sort of supply limit for a system with bigger fleets taking penalties.

>>
>>167159134
>How hazardous it is
How would a star system could be hazardous apart from funny shit like having a black hole? Even then it would just restrict travel in a certain area. Space is big as fuck and there aren't marshes or forests like on land, there's nothing that limits throughput.

I think the terraforming mechanic should be changed to suit this need. You should be able to build bases on all kinds of planets or asteroids. And slowly form them to more permanent bases or settlements if that would be beneficial in the future.

>>167159367
I know. I doesn't really need to be realistic but make wars in stellaris less boring.

>>167159418

>>
>>167159418
>Local life forms.
>Automated AI.
That's already in game, and you can just kill them which solves the problem permanently.
>Asteroids.
Actual asteroid belts are mostly empty space, you could safely pass our solar system's asteroid belt just going in a straight line. Even if there was one you could just like fly around it, space is 3D.
>Anomalies.
At worst you just FTL around it. Now that I think about it all currently available FTL methods do not require you to actually fly through a system, so what's inside doesn't even matter.
>>
>>167159998
It doesn't need to be realistic because no one knows what space combat will be like. But now you just build a bigger doomstack than the ai and you crush his fleet. Or if you can't build a bigger doomstack you just avoid his doomstack and destroy his stations while his doomstack tries to catch up.

Yes and then paradox will receive 100000000 complaints. Supply throughput belongs on earth, not in space.

>But now you just build a bigger doomstack than the ai and you crush his fleet. Or if you can't build a bigger doomstack you just avoid his doomstack and destroy his stations while his doomstack tries to catch up.
Civ used to be doomstacky and it worked out fine. This is still preferable to artificially forced mechanics to split up fleetballs.

Only military AI. What about passive AI, like the thing taking care of the Citadel in Mass Effect?
>>
>>167160794
You hyperdrive in on the edge of the system, charge the jump, then hyperdrive out. You could have a giant space worm rave party going on in the system and it wouldn't change anything. Better yet, you just wormhole through only safe systems.
>>
>>167160687
>Supply throughput belongs on earth, not in space.
No it does not.
Ships in space need ammo, spare parts and fuel. If they are in enemy space they need those things to be brought to them by transport/cargo ship and that ship has to travel to them, has to be build so you have to have enough shipyards to build them, refineries to make fuel etc.
So stuff like Supply throughput should be reflected in any decent space 4x game.
>>
>>167161052
I meant supply throughput as in restrictions on the amount of stuff you can ship. Space is 99.9% empty space, the only limitation is how much freight space you have and enemy ships intercepting your shit. A system requiring you to resupply your ships would be great. Artificially limiting the amount of shit you can ship past a system isn't.
>>
>>167161002
Colonizing or conquering the system may be difficult is another empire took it first and reprogrammed the local AI.
>>
>>167160687
But supply lines which need to be defended could still be implemented if you're agianst supply limits on systems. But the game doesn't use the environment would't it be nice if you make suprise attacks with fleets hidden in gas giants, or if smaller ships have bonussus in dense asteroid fields.

>>167161052
Don't forget the food for the crews and troops onboard the ships.
>>
>>167161328
>supply lines
Pretty much what I want, plus a ship class for carrying supplies to go with it.
>>
>>167160794
>hmm, there are local life forms in this solar system
>therefore I can only fight with 50 ships rather than my entire fleet of 100
I agree that gameplay has priority over realism, but if it's too counterintuitive it's going to be too hard to swallow.

About supply: do you want actual literal supply ships, like in Aurora, or just a HOI system where a unit is "in supply" or "out of supply" based on range and being surrounded?
>>
>>167161750
I don't think it needs to have a specific customizable ship class. To prevent more micro management you could just have a highlighted path from the nearest supply base to you fleet.
>>
>>167162120
And in the fleet window you then could see wich supplies your fleet needs or possibly lacks.
>>
>>167161275

>>167161750
>>167162120

Each ship carries X fuel, Y ammo etc and you have to get that shit to them if you want your offensive to advance.
>>
>>167162247
Just like Star Ruler.
>>
>>167162120
I was thinking more along the lines of a support ship for resupplying you take along with your fleet so you can go out for a while without worrying about supply.
>>
>>167162120
A ship class is easy. Even army transports get their own class, and nobody cares because the auto-generate does it all. The problem with micromanagement is 100% the activity of the ship itself. So either:

a) Supply ships go according to an AI system (which may or may not communicate its travel intentions to the player), meaning the player has to babysit something outside his control.

b) The player has to order these ships around manually.

With armies it's not a problem, since they're just right behind the fleet. Supply ships are a problem because it's assumed that they're going back and forth between the battlefield and your civilization.

By making diplomacy more interesting but this would probably would need a decent trade system. Or a decent federation/ galactic UN system.

For example you could sent a diplomatic envoy to sign a trade deal or use your fleet to put pressure on smaller nations to make decisions in your favour. Or the possibility to use trade embargoes.

>>167163621
I don't the late game is that much fun because I've never had any trouble defeating an end game crisis only for the rest of the galaxy to forget you saved them 10 or 20 years later. Only the fallen empires are challenging but the ai cannot deploy his fleets in any reasonable way so it is still quite boring.

Maybe nations should be able to form a space UN which could be formed to a federal government like the galactic republic in star wars. This could result in huge civil wars over what kind of power this new federal government will have. Although it would just be another war in heaven.

My Sophon neighbour was the first AI I've seen actually take the influence annexation tech and he used it with great enthusiasm. It should be noted that AI on Hard and above gets fucking insane border growth due to income cheats they get, the only way to fight their ever encroaching borders is to either play Empire and do nothing but rush all influence buildings and techs, or simply kill them.
Since my Sophon friend started annexing one of my planets before I even finished researching my medium hulls and since I'm playing fucking Horatio, I didn't do that well in open fight that ensued. I'm hoping a pair of these will help. At 10k fleet strength each and an initial volley that oneshots battleships they're easily a match for the AE titans. Although they're fucking expensive so if I ever lose one I get set back a full year of resource collection and production time. And yes those are giga cannons in L slots, one of the mods i'm using drops them a size class to make room for titan strength weapons, eventually, I'm not that far up the tech tree yet.

The problem is that all is fair with modding so their AI vassals will use these too if they've actually researched them. Maybe less of a problem given that the league of non-aligned planets is a federation so my tech is shared with everyone in the form of federation ships.
>>
>>167175289
Yeah, they frustrated me a lot too. Especially the Wonders. At least in Civ wonders are somewhat situational, in EL there's literally no situation where you wouldn't want a wonder, since they simply give you huge yield boosts. Oh, and whether you get them or not depends purely on how lucky you were with resources in your areas. I'm still salty there's no strategic start option of some sorts in EL, the difference between a good start (2 life trees lel) and a bad start (tundra and emeralds, enjoy the game bruh) is gigantic.

These are the ones for the combat side of things;
New ship classes & more
Ship power stations
Titan laser + resized lances
Citadels - tier 4 defensive stations
Titan weapons designed to mesh with the laser one, essentially giving you kinetic and missile variants of titan lasers
Stellar expansion - Voidcraft This is the one with the new ship classes

Less related to the space combat aspect;
Pre FTL
Researcher trait "fix"
Ticking warscore
Planetary computer
Stellar expansion - pretty much all the terraforming ones
Ringworld restoration
More events mod
Auto build and improve buildings

That last one is a major QoL mod, lets you set various settings in an edict to auto build/improve buildings on your worlds, can set a pool of minerals to not take from, can tell it to ignore certain low yields or what to prioritize as well as gives some 0 cost planetary edicts to designate them as production centers for stuff, like making an energy center makes it disregard the normal settings and just build power plants with a couple of farms. Even handles robots and slaves if you let it. Best part is it can be applied to the AI and sector AI making them not completely fucking retarded and you end up fighting AI with actual functioning planetary economies.

This is just balls. It feels like every AI, including this Sophon, uses the Lumeri ability of deep striking their colonies at any planet on the map. Because there's no fucking way he had a chance to sneak a colonist in there, I had all 3 paths from his sector to that star taken and I didn't see any fucking colonists. It's so goddamn annoying, every game first thing AI does is try to surround you with colonies.

Putting a Socialist dictatorship spin on it in practice - the clergy was always conservative, trying to uphold the Monarchy (if there was one) and resist societal change. The commies therefore targeted them. All the priests from my hometown had to go to work re-education camps (basically barracks) where they had to scrub the shitters and what-not.

Commies wanted utter and total obedience to a new religion - Communism. They had a book, a prophet and a leading figure promising to take the bad shit away. Organized religion like christianity was in the way of power. That's why it was a big contender for power in the mid-east yet never managed to win. Kebab didn't wanna give away his Great Kebab in the Sky.

Adding few details.
Then come Stalin.
He build whole cult of a person and believe me or not there were plenty of people who believe in idea of communism or that it is good for the people(actually it help overcome plenty of problems and move feudal society into industrial era) and that its the only way for the humanity to prosper.
It works for a while then the war comes. Holy war.
Then it go worse and Khrushchev shit on Stalin.
Imagine that new Pope start shitting on whole idea of holy scriptures and Catholicism(well kinda like now but worse), saying that Jesus fuck whores and little kids, do drugs and eat babies.
No wonder why Mao and China split. It was worse than heresy.

Endless Space 2 but its EA so beware.

>>167188125
Stellaris is actually pretty fun even if it is lacking in content somewhat, mods add quite a lot and fix a lot of the problems it has. And while like most paradox games it's kinda limited right now, they'll keep developing it and adding a lot of stuff in free updates with more in DLC for years, and you can pirate the DLC for this game by straight up dropping the files in the games DLC folder, no DRM on the DLC at all.

Buy the base game. Love the game. Adore the game. Pirate the DLC.

The Mongols were prepared. They dropped troops behind my lines out of planes next to my artillery and met my Rifleman at the frontlines with some sort of armored tractors mounted with cannons. So far though they are being repulsed. We can move our troops quickly across the Assyrian river valley whereas they must cross the desert and hills to attack, giving us a significant advantage.

Other than the fact that it would be entirely reasonable to have a self sufficient fleet in space, fuel as a limiting factor for fleet movement is already fairly tedious in itself as it is. Goes doubly true for real time games with real time fuel management.
What id like to see is more interplanetary trading mechanics, so its more strategic to do things like blockade and intercept to disrupt the movement of personnel and material.
Naturally the issue is that the AI cant handle that while the player can

>>
>>167235418
Yeah, it's one of Isaac Asimov's series, about a human detective and his android sidekick, one of the stories was on a colonist planet where each person lived dozens of kilometers from each other with a posse of android slaves, meeting other humans only to fuck pretty much. The mystery was about a woman that got killed by her fuckbot or something.
I remember reading them when I was younger, but can't recall the name.

It was pretty interesting to see two differing cultures.

>>167235228
Fuel could also be used per jump to another system so it doesn't have to be real time. But what about ammunition, food for the crew.

Paradox could make the advantage of lasers or other beam weapons that a fleet with those weapons would have a lower supply burden.

The invention nutrient replication could also be an important inention to reduce to supply burden of a fleet late game.

Another possibility to reduce the food cost for a fleet could be better combat computers which could reduce the minimun crew requirement. These computers could or should require more energy credits. In this way you could give empires a choice of going for food or energy depending on their planets and traits.

No, that's the one I think. Maybe. I remember there being a scene where he touched a colonist girl and later she admitted to having an orgasm from it, that was also a dramatic scene. I remember in the first book he was featured prominently and in the others he was mostly there just to stand around and be naive to have the MC explain things about the world.

And, minor factions were assimilated into glorious Empire.
It's interesting that bonuses provided by same species of minor aliens can stack multiple times. Here I annexed 2 Hissho systems and got +40% damage on weapon modules. Seems like hell of a bonus to give out so easily, especially compared to other minor factions, which mostly give useless stuff like "50% faster probes".

Could make it so that you can have early game hyperlane creating tech be hella expensive/dangerous/both and have it become cheaper and safer as you progress down that tech tree

So if you really desperately need to forward settle that system so you don't get boxed the fuck in early game you can jury rig a hyperlane and sned a bunch of colony ships and hope one of them makes it to the other side

IIRC, uncharted hyperspace jumps in Star Wars are really really dangerous (see: Han Solo's line in ANH about flying to close to a star or bouncing to close to a suprenova). So Hyperspace lanes are safe routes that have been previously charted.

From what little I played, the main concern where the changed movement mechanics of the units. This led to OP horse units in the early game, though I don't know if they patched it.

Also, the AI is suicidal with wars in the early game. As for the modding community, I don't know of anything big, but once tools are given I'm guessing another community patch.

Endless difficulty in Endless Space 2 turned out to be a lot easier than I expected.
I even had time to make a special refugee centre for all the poor aliens whom I liberated. It's called Gulag East. That system always runs "Exotic rations" on repeat - the thing that turns one pop into 300 soldiers. This way aliens we saved from oppression can repay their debt to the United Empire and become true patriots.
But seriously, by this point I'm just sabotaging myself to have fun, sending out half of my empire's population into a Gulag, I'm also exclusively using strategical resource weapons on my ships (which are actually worse than the normal non resource guns due to the way tech tree works).
I just took Primus from blue Horatio, yellow italian Fishes will be on the menu next and white Vodyani I'll leave for last, their fleets are already pretty formidable and maybe it'll be more fun fighting them in the late game with all the Arks and shit. There was also a purple Craver somewhere to the west, but I think he got eaten up by Horatio.
Ask questions I guess, by this point I must qualify as someone that's "good" at the game.

I'll give it a try though thanks.
>>
>>167260660
Nah, I'm still federation. I like +25% hammers and -25% overextension, it's probably my favourite government.
I went with scientists (only because I already tried industry and military would've been too boring) during the main quest and since I tried to recruit scientist heroes it seemed to work out fine. I didn't try anything fancy with the laws, when I had enough scientific support I ran the +50% science law. It's a shame I didn't find any scientifically inclined aliens, maybe I'd even keep myself from gulaging them.
It's ironic, but politics only really matter when you're a dictatorship - then you have to keep an eye out and be very careful, or you'll get wrecked by unhappiness. Religious is probably the best for a warmongering dictatorship, since you can just press a button and erase all unhappiness. That's what I did with Horatio.
>>
>>167262831
What are the factions that you think are clearly better or worse than others. Also how do you exchange maps, I couldn't figure out how
>>
>>167263037
Vodyani feel shitty to me because of the way their whole gimmick works - you have to get lucky with nearby minor factions, you have to get lucky with planets, you have to avoid getting smashed by AI's fleet and constant endless streams of fucking pirates hunting down your leechers. Maybe I just didn't properly sink teeth into them, but they feel weird and very vulnerable.

Cravers are kinda shitty - they start out with the worst government in the game - dictatorship and have to struggle just to prevent permanent revolution on the entire empire constantly flipping them back and forth to pacifism and back. When I played Cravers I rushed for government changing tech right away, changed into republic and things went smoothly from there, I could concentrate on conquering shit and forget about politics. Also Cravers get a very shitty trait - any non-Craver pop located on the same planet as a Craver pop will be "enslaved" - it will produce 50% more FIDSI, but it will also produce fuckloads of unhappiness. So you have to keep your empire heavily segregated at all times, going through systems after every growth cycle to put pops on separate planets and shit.

Horatio start out ridiculously weak - their recon ship doesn't have any guns on it, which means Horatio can easily be bullied away from potential colonies in the early game, their ships take 25% more hammers, which hurts them heavily in the early game and in addition to that their ships are crap in regards to slots they have. But since Horatio become absolute gods in late game I don't really mind that.

In order to exchange maps you gotta make peace with a rival empire first. You start out in the state of Cold War and have to research a special tech to befriend them.
>>
>>167264415
Ok, I made peace but still couldn't find the option. Did you play cravers after the fix to dictatorship? Also it wouldn't be an amplitude game if start location didn't matter a whole hell of a lot
>>
>>167264739
At least they're putting in starting system settings this time around.
>>
>>167248826

Not quite. If you make tests with the console you will notice that even warp is faster than hyperdrive if you jump a few systems on a race. Also warp ships no longer will be unable to return fire while in cooldown (they simply cant move but they fire back). Warp is OP now.

I would go massive on robots, fits well with both, the slow breeding, and the fact that they use those construct things because they can't be bothered to do anything themselves. Then research dangerous technology like sentient AI to emulate the fact that they fuck over everyone else in the galaxy for their own debauched convenience, and destroy their own civilization in the process.

As for traits, slow breeders, decadent, very weak, repugnant, solitary, deviants and slow learners comes to mind. That describes them pretty well, I think.
>>
>>167267895
That should do.
>>
>>167269351
In this game you should start pretty early, but without getting fanatical about it.
I usually research small ships right after finishing the T1 colonisation techs and make 2 basic shitty ships with T1 equipment somewhere in between the initial few colony ships - an attacker and a protector. These 2 can take on most pirate types (basically all pirate types until mediums start rolling in), protect your fresh outposts, siege down enemy outposts, force back enemy explorers and just make your life a lot easier. Small ships aren't for conquering shit, they are just for quality of life in a galaxy populated to the brim by fucking pirates. Then after you research medium ships start maintaining a couple of full CP fleets just in case. If you are planning on conquering shit you can make a lot more than a couple fleets, mediums is where you can actually go on offense. If you feel like you have nothing to build except ships then research the tech that lets you generate dosh with your production.
Also right now heroes in ES2 don't seem to get any xp from space battles. I don't know if this is intended, but it makes using a dedicated combat hero somewhat difficult - he'll be level 3 by the time your governors get to 20. So I just run all heroes as governors, sending them out to the fleets right before the war/big battle starts.

that is the first game son, and my first game of the first game. Loved Endless Legend so I snapped up the others in that discounted collection they had on steam. Started on easy cause I've never touched a space 4x before and was intimidated, but it turned out to be pretty forgiving and I've ended up with like, 300 years worth of tech lead. It's been a long hard fought war. They would weaken my line with conventional attacks and artillery, and finish them off with repeated bomber strikes before I could rotate them out. But the tide has been slowly turning.

We've developed anti-aircraft guns. We are progressively building more railroads in Assyria to redeploy troops more quickly. And finally our new specially trained guerilla fighters are finally reaching the lines.

Actually conquering a single Mongolian city seems far off still in this trench warfare, but I'm confident they will feel the effects of war weariness first. Even now the people of the Mongolian Empire are hovering on discontent.

DEAR JADE FACETISM GOD!

The Mongols have a new weapon that just laid waste to our center! We must pull back! Deadly fallout blocks our Southern front's retreat and poisons the very air they breath!

Assyria is in ruins. As we retreat I'm not sure if we can save our vassal state from the Mongol hordes. Our only solace is that the Mongols wouldn't dare use this new weapon in the north where it affect the Byzantines and that as we speak unrest is tearing the Mongol Empire apart from within.

Just picked up Stellaris. Whats a good "Just starting and want to get a feel for the game" race and whatnot to go with? And is either of the DLC worth it?
>>
>>167301394
Best way to understand the trait system is to make your own race. Appearance and planets are cosmetic, traits and engine/start weapons are not.

Every trait gives you +relations with others with the same trait and -relations with others with the trait directly opposite. Xenophile is a good start trait (because xenophobes are hard to make friends with), pick militarist or pacifist depending on whether or not you want to fight.

Other than that, get Kinetic weapons and Warp engines. Ship appearance is cosmetic.

Pick a small/tiny map and disable advanced neighbors and use no more than 1 Fallen Empire. Remember to use the tutorial robot once the game starts.

Have fun and profit?

Also armor or shields or both?
>>
>>167304140
I use 2/1 Cruisers/Battleships, don't bother with destroyers and have a separate corvette fleet to catch strays, destroy frontier posts and bait larger fleets.

Depends what your enemy is using. Either re-spec before a war or have both. Check the armor % in the right, at some point it'll stop adding so don't bother putting armor past that.

I finished this game off by declaring war onto all AIs at the same time and capturing all of their capitals. I wasn't even sure that's how it works with Vodyani, I half expected to have to colonise their capital system after I killed the Ark, but no, their systems can still be sieged as usual.
I was also surprised that UE science quest is even more grimdark than their Industry one. I wonder how evil the Military route is.

How's Stellaris now? I remember playing it at release and it horribly lacks content. Is the AI still retarded? Does sharing star charts still cucks you out of events? Do objectives still spawn behind AI borders disabling you from doing anything but taking it by force?

So far the biggest problem with playing Vodyani is absolute lack of manpower. It's a sneaky stat, something you don't pay attention to when you play for the first time, but without it planetary invasions in this game are pretty much impossible. So now I have a huge, capable fleet, but still can't wage war. I guess I'll have to cripple my already very modest growth rate and build those food to soldier buildings everywhere.
I sure miss those Gulags.

Every faction other than Vodyani has a very easy way of getting those soldiers - you just make a Gulag for aliens and run a project that conscripts them into the army non stop, you lose unwanted elements of the society, you get fresh soldiers, everyone is happy.
Vodyani though is a very "special" and gimmicky faction. Their growth is ridiculously slow, but they can syphon life from enemy planets to supplement their own. The hard part is getting to those planets when everyone declares closed borders as soon as they see you and all the neutral factions have long been assimilated.
>>
>>167318824
Can't you just conquer someone and siphon those planets?
>>
>>167319075
I have to conquer one first to learn for sure, I've never went as far with Vodyani before. My previous attempts at playing them were pretty sad.
I know that after they conquer the planet it becomes uncolonised and anyone can take it with all the population and buildings that were there for next 20 turns or so.
It also looks like my manpower panic was somewhat preemptive, it becomes ok after you build some food to manpower stuff, even if it's not a very optimal approach.

I captured a craver planet - Orion. But as soon as I took it this entire region got submerged in Red Sophon's borders. I attempted to put an Ark on it, but my Ark fucking blew up. And according to interface this system doesn't even have any colonised planets and yet has a thriving population.
I feel like this something to do with Culture conversion by Sophon making the planet switch allegiances and blow up my Ark.

>>167322878
That's correct, that is what the Dyson Sphere will do to all habitable worlds in a system. Good way to purge if you aren't Collectivist.

Also, why is purging so much more effective than anything else? It's either that or go Spiritualist/Individualist so you can cheese ED and happiness, and the hurdles you have to jump through to, say, throw a Fallen Empire's garbage pops to the street? Can't play Fanatic Spiritualist/Militarist and conquer without someone else to purge the planets of shitty pops. Is there a more efficient way to go about this?

I'm having a lot of fun with spiritualist/collectivist enslaving everybody. The mineral/food boost from enslaved pops is nice and with transcendent empire everyone quickly converges on your ethics becoming docile slaves. Purging feels like a waste when you could enjoy slaves instead.

My spiritualists might get an overhaul just because of that, unless this "caste-based system" they mentioned on the stream is accessible to everyone. Not being able to purge shitty pops to immediately pick up production after knocking over a Fallen Empire, or not being able to just say "DEUS VULT!" and RP holy wars, really sucks.
>>
>>167327484
Why would you go ED with individualist? The point of individualist is that you don't need ED, in fact, individualism as a pop ethos has no positive effect, only the empire ethos, so you're better off if they switch to something else with an actual effect like materialist.

But yes, if you want to get your empires happiness in any way under control, you basically have to go either collectivist, individualist, or genocidal (alien pops are no problem if your policy is to purge their planets before resettling it with your own pops). Anything else means that you're going to have to constantly suppress 10 different factions.
>>
>>167327641
Individualist xenophobic empire.
>>
>>167329130
Quick correction: Apparently individualists had energy credit bonus, my bad. Still, not worth going heavily into ethics divergence just to preserve, especially because most other ethics have an equally useful effect.
>>
I wish there was a diplomatic way to purge Pops without causing unhappiness.
>>
>>167329130
>>167329437
That impact is reduced yes, but it requires you to go Fanatic Individualist or you get a gimped version of it. You don't really get a bonus for them being a different ethos, it just eases the impact of their ethos rotating every month.

A high ED also prevents migration treaties shitting on your economy when, say a Fanatic Pacifist/Collectivist, migrates to your Fan. Militarist/Individualist empire and burns the shopping mall down, causing a failcascade.
>>
I don't understand how ethics work in Stellaris. Basically, any Pop on one of my planet will slowly take on my beliefs unless I get "liberated" by someone else?

My Endless difficulty Vodyni game is almost complete, I only have one guy left to cleanse.
Overall Vodyani turned out to be a lot better than I iniatially thought - they got great ships, they got +20% HP on infantry and the way they work every planet in a system at the same time from the get go is amazing.
The only problem is very shitty start, trying to squeeze out that first Ark while every pirate in the galaxy is chasing your leecher.
Also Cultural annexation destroys Arks, which is bullshit.
>>
>>167331762
About the time you start hearing about The Messenger.
Either don't fund the scientist or execute him when he turns.
>>
>>167330671
How does ED help you with that? Individualist does, but ED doesn't do much if you gain pops that already have a different ethos.

Yes, having ED for free would obviously be better than not having it, but it's not for free. You'd be sacrificing an entire ethos point just to gain a small amount of ED, which you don't need that much because Individualist is barely affected by divergence.

>>167330812
All your pops start with your empire's ethos. If you have positive divergence, your pops may slowly change to random other ethics. If their opinion differs from your policies (e.g. pacifist pop when your empire is militaristic), they get a malus to happiness.

Negative divergence prevents your pops from changing their ethics, and gives newborn pops a chance of being closer to your empire's ethics. Old pops however will usually stay the same, even if you have -100% ethics divergence.

Liberation does the opposite, it creates a new government with the liberators ethos instead of the original ethos, but the population keeps their old ethos. The "liberator" is basically just putting a puppet regime in place on the conquered planets.
>>
>>167332314
>Liberation does the opposite, it creates a new government with the liberators ethos instead of the original ethos, but the population keeps their old ethos. The "liberator" is basically just putting a puppet regime in place on the conquered planets.
Ha. So liberating someone may cripple them?
>>
>>167332410
It potentially can. And since liberatign them gives them the exact same ethos as you, they usually happily oblige to your polite requests of alliance, vassalization or protectorate status.
>>
>>167332410
Yes, that's the point. It is a wargoal after all.

Think about it not as "liberating someone". What you're liberating are the planets, not the players. Liberated planets become a separate government, which means they are no longer under control of that empire. If someone liberates a planet from you, you lose your planet, and they create a new NPC that is now in control of that planet. They didn't liberate you, they liberated that planet FROM YOU.

So you'd usually use that to weaken an enemy empire, while simultaneously creating a new empire that is going to be on more friendly terms with you. You can completely eliminate a rival simply by liberating all of his planets.
>>
>>167332673
That may be the only good thing in Stellaris so far.
>>
>>167332821
Important thing to mention: the ruling government of the new nation gets your ethos. The population does not get your ethos.

It's important to note though that you can only liberate by winning a war, in which case you can also just conquer the planet yourself and make it a part of your own empire. So that would usually be the preferred wargoal. Liberating is slightly less expensive, so you can take away more planets that way, but you won't be the one controlling them. My main use for it is if I'm simply not interested in actually owning the planet when it's too small.

You can also liberate a planet to gain better access to their technology, the liberated party will have the same technology as the original empire, but will be much more willing to sign a research agreement.

Lastly, pacifists are not able to directly conquer planets, so they will have to slowly liberate planets as their main strategy, then vassalize the new empire, then slowly incorporate it into their own empire if they want to grow. So their playstyle is very different, but they also tend to be on good terms with others because they never actually "conquer" anything.
