So I actually finished the game awhile back but haven't really gotten to talk to anyone about it, so some of the specifics will be just a little vague.

I loved the game. I thought that Goro needs maybe 15 minutes of more writing to be one of their best characters. I thought that the supporting cast was only lacking in part of the Christmas cake area, and aside from that was top tier. I wish the end of the game was a little longer from a gameplay perspective.

The main thing I want to say is that the way it addressed its problems was definitely different from what I expected since it wasn't a

deal for the main story like it's been for Atlus in the past, and more like
>if y wasn't there, x would be just like any z, but the damage has already been done
It's a lot more defeatist in that sense, but in showing this it feels like they're trying to say that there's more to life than just accepting x as the standard and eventually turning into something like it yourself, and you can stay z if you work for it, but it really can't be done alone.
This felt like the reason for having the Phantom Thieves be social outcasts, and then solve the co-op problems through Mementos even when it wasn't totally necessary, like it was a stand-in for outside help/good will in general, but fuck if I really know what Atlus was thinking. Using Phantom Thieves for this purpose in the first place is symbolic as fuck but there's too many different ways you can look at it.

You know I remember coming here to complain about this shit after the first movie came out, and at the time I remember the response being "wow, haven't you ever heard of DEPRESSION? maybe he has a REASON to act that way???" Like fuck, the game version of him comes across as depressed (antisocial, apathetic, sometimes irritable), but he never hits the same lows as the movie version and in fact softens up over time. The movies even have him falling apart over the course of the story and sometimes being a bigger detriment to the team than a help. They made him literally Shinji but not even in a way that made you feel sorry for him.

You know how Yuri Lowenthall doesn't sound exactly like Yosuke in real life, but he gets hired to do the same kind of character over and over to the point where it sounds like "his" voice? What I mean is that when I hear Matt Mercer as Yusuke, it sounds like he was hired to be a cheaper Troy Baker again but they told him to also sound pretentious. It's not literally Matt Mercer's speaking voice but it's the same performance he always gives (with a bad twist).

Part of the problem is how badly everyone is miscast. The person voicing Futaba should be voicing Anne, the person voicing Anne should be Makoto, and the person voicing Makoto should be Futaba. And the Velvet Twins sound like they're older than every party member, and then Yusuke sounds nowhere near Sugita's level of awkwardness yet confidence, he just sounds like a generic pretentious git, Morgana is just plain bad for the role, and barely any of the co-op voices are well cast.

Outside of a few blunders it's pretty damn good.

Bosch and lowenthal may do the same voices for practically everything, but JYB's Performance as Adachi was way better than I'd ever expect and Lowenthal just fits Yosuke.

Bailey and Baker are very talented.

I don't mind English Yukiko, especially as he actress has made the role her own over time, but she sounds terrible at the beginning of P4 and doesn't start keeping her voice consistent until a quarter into the game. And I can't think of much that's more unbearable than Fitzgerald going ham on a role, snorting and slurring everywhere. She's great when she's reigned in, but Arem loves her too much to do that, so she just lets her do as she pleases.

Yusuke is the biggest casualty imo. The deep voice and the slow, deliberate way he speaks is what makes him sound wise and regal despite the ridiculous shit that actually comes out of his mouth. It creates a funny contrast that can also be immediately turned off whenever the story goes into a more dramatic scene (it's not like, say, Teddie's voice that instantly ruins anything serious). Mercer's Yusuke doesn't accomplish any of that.

Futaba's voice is easily the biggest casualty in my eyes. Aoi Yuuki's performance was so fantastic that the bar was already set insanely high for her, and they didn't just fail to meet it - they absolutely dropped the ball entirely.
