Well, after the last demo day, I tried to buckle down and get the combat to feel good. In the end, there is a reason the only game featureing head jumping combat doesn't focus on combat. And, without that my game is just a much worse version of binding of isaac. Its back to the drawing board to make some major changes towards origonality.

Your eyesight can be trained. While baseball certainly favours players with good eyesight, it doesn't mean you have to go in with 20/11 vision - your vision will improve as you go. Because only the other 20% does any programming on their own before university. In other subjects people have plenty of opportunities to develop interest in a structured way before uni, programming, typically not so much.

If someone is better than you, they have been practising for longer and/or more efficiently than you. Nobody is born with some instinctual ability to do things. They may have been born or raised with an aptitude, but that simply means they find practising efficiently easier since they can focus more.

Alright, I want to start a little project but I got to know something first. How do I define a "path" where the player and other NPCs like monsters, can walk without crossing the borders of that path? Imagine pic related as two terrain meshes, one with a slope and the other is just plain. The green area is where the player can move freely and the red area is the no go zone, the player should not be able to walk there.

What's the best way to define said path? I was looking into navigation mesh but most articles just cover the AI pathfinder topic. Is navmesh the correct way to implement this feature or are there better alternatives?

For low-res shit like this it doesn't have to make a lot of sense, though - So you can literally just make some interesting shapes and then stretch the UVs over them until it seems to fit (pic related).

It matters especially when you're testing, because that's exactly when you're going to be updating your code. Also, if you keep your save format stable through code changes, you can build a backlog of test cases for automated testing: just take the quicksave + a buffer of inputs + some final state asserts and you've got a robust integration testing suite.

As to lossless-ness, the problem with testing with a lossy format is that all of a sudden, you're testing something that doesn't actually represent a "normal" gamestate. This can lead to all sorts of annoying heisenbugs where something only works in debug mode, or even worse, save corruption

It is I, PathFinder Dev with some more #progress. Kind of sad because I just broke up with my girlfriend of 6 months. Oh well. At least that means that I now have more time to #makeGaem. :'^)

Well you have a unique mechanic (not "literally never been done before" but that doesn't matter), so figure out some interesting things you can do with said mechanic and you have a game.

For example:
Level design - vents in the ceiling and stuff you can climb into; jumping puzzles; mechanical elements that you can grab onto that can send you flying; etc.

Enemy design - enemies only attack you if they see you (stealth); enemies that have weak points if you attack them from above, or on their backs if you can drop in behind them; some melee enemies that can climb after you

Weapon design- Melee weapon that you can jump/drop on enemies with; grappling hook (imo all games should have grappling hooks anyways but it would work well here);

Comfy progress!

I'm redoing the layout for the map, though it's still pretty bad and random.
I've added a compass-kind of thing that also shows the direction of the wind.
I changed the look of the foam particles.
I implemented the "happy" and "disappointed" animation after you recall the claw.
I forgot to make the minigame end if you lose, gotta fix that asap
I also set up the UI for the map (to show where the treasure is) and the "treasure report" panel.
Lastly, I laid out the code structure (on paper) for the NPCs and the quest system, now I just hace to code it.

I think it's more of aptitude.. on thinking abstract concepts in your mind before you can figure out what to type for your code. Imagining how the data flows, how should they be represented, etc.

I think there's a baseline requirement with your brain's ability to be able to do such a thing, but that said, a lot of people fool themselves into thinking they're incapable, or thinking they've already hit a physical limit of it for themselves. So part of the initial practicing, is removing that misconception.

My first android game was C++ / SDL, and that was a major headache getting to work on a phone.

Now I'm using Unreal, and it's super easy, just set android as target platform.

I can plug my phone into my computer, and click a button and the game will compile and pull up on my phone for me to test it.

UE4 is amazing.

Textures and the like, this particular game Watch Dogs 2 has .dat data files so they're probably in there somewhere. Do these games use encryption or are tools available to unpack them. I'm working on the same problem right now, thought it's pretty inconclusive seeing as I'm still using placeholder art.

I don't know much about gamemaker, but I'd go with the bottom unless you can guarantee your character always fits neatly to the pixel grid. You can fiddle with the base resolution if need be.

----New Project Alert----

In true fashion, a new month means getting bored of your current projects and starting something new (that you will never finish).

I was watching the movie Equalizer and thought it would be cool to make a game where you feel cool. It's a regular top down shooter but the twist is that when you shot enemy everything slows down, ultimately you are supposed to combo kills i guess and get through the level in one go.

Just to be realistic i will make 3 levels to see if it's fun. I have a working prototype for spelunky type room generations so i might do something like that.

I need to decide art style, what do you guys think? Realistic pixels or sci-fi pixels?
