I don't know much about pre-FU but I've heard FU basically contains all the content of the previous games too, being an expansion of F2 with the content of F1 which were the portable G rank versions of 1 and 2 or something like that. P3rd never got a proper G rank version so include that I guess, the difficulty for p3rd is a lot lower than the other games I've played though. It does have the highest comfy factor. Generations is going to have a G rank version, it's called XX (double-cross, yes it's cringey as fuck) in japan (generations was called X, cross) and we don't know what it'll be called elsewhere (probably Generations Unite desu), but you'd want to wait for that.

Considering you'll probably be emulating p3rd and FU, that's just three games. But it IS a yearly franchise if you don't only include the ultimate/G/Unite versions of the games.

P3rd is technically obsolete roster-wise, but also very cheap (free) and easy (PPSSPP) to play.
So in terms of getting a good chunk of 3rd gen gameplay easily it's one of the best choices.

Pretty much, yeah. Though each game still has its own little things it keeps like their own village, Freedom Unite practically has all the monsters prior to Tri so you might as well play that.

Guild high rank quests are about the same difficulty as cat quests, and for some reason I don't think the Guild HR monsters are sporting any of the new moves monsters have in Unite, so for example I've never seen a Rajang do a jump roll in 8* Guild but have seen it in 9* cat quests.

F2 basically had you start with the Guild quests anyway once you finished Shen Gaoren so may as well do it, it'll be an even longer grind to G rank if you don't.

Tell me about it. I killed Astalos like 5 times to make his armor because it's rad as fuck and in those 5 hunts I got 7 plates which I will never use because his weapons for the classes I'm using are pretty crappy, even if they are very pretty.

Meanwhile I have hunted Mizutsune about 30 times for a single fucking plate to upgrade my swaxe and haven't had one.

So that babies can use it. If it were a normal dodge window, which would actually make the style as described, then it would be too difficult for the majority of players to make use of at all. Also, on most weapons it's offset by the fact that after a successful dodge you're locked into running or attacking for a few seconds, meaning you can't dodge again so you're susceptible to combos. DB is a big exception, it gets two high-iframe dodges instead of the run.

I dislike Online because it feels like it changes with the base formula, whereas Frontier is the same mechanics and concepts from mainline under the hood with more and more content piled on top of it over time.
I'm also willing to say I haven't touched Online personally. I'm still waiting for it to be out of beta yet from what I last heard it just seems to be eternally in this beta limbo.

And on a simpler reason, the sound and music for Online seem to suck ass from the videos I've seen.

It has the ultimates but they're basically the same thing as hunter arts in Generations except you only get to equip one and they take far longer to charge so the gameplay isn't actually alterred by them whatsoever and you don't get styles, mounting or UW combat ACTUALLY changing the core gameplay on top of that. MHO feels more like "real" MH to me than the last several mainline titles, especially Gen.

The ultimate moves are one thing, and I dislike them the same reason I dislike arts.
The whole concept of special moves that charge up based simply on time/hitting the monster a lot feels lazy for lack of a better word.

Make it something the player can do on a whim, like Frontier's SA can run with a simple double tap of the sick, instead of some art that you have to worry about charging times and whatnot.
Just feels kinda wrong to have an action based on a single button press outside of the normal swings.

MHO monsters also hit like weak bitches too, which is super obvious when they steal moves from their Frontier versions.

And in the end I could easily be wrong as shit about all of this since I said I never have touched it. Just me reacting to the things I can see of the game itself.

True enough, but Transcend doesn't do jack shit to your moveset. Just boosts mainly elemental damage and raw damage, as well as giving you a breathing window of enhanced defense. Then finally the burst which is a pretty nice finisher I'll give, but it isn't weapon specific.
Even then it takes nearly 5 minutes of being in the same area to charge at the highest level, meaning a good amount of fights will see only one if that many at all.

I think it's one thing to give the player an ace up their sleeve, but quite another to make it so that I can't swing a weapon in a specific way just because not enough time has passed.

They also force turn off Transcend in some of the harder fights just to be dicks.

Every quest has a second version with more aggressive AI, full monster movesets and higher damage values (basically a higher rank version) that gives better rewards, or at least they did last time I played. Basically there's the casual baby version that's easier than regular MH (which it sounds like you played) and the real version that's harder than regular MH.
