secondary to this, if your teams front line moves up far enough, move your stuff up, if youre about lose first, pick up your sentry/tele and move back premptively so you have a line ready just behind that point, and not giving it away for free just waiting on second. Watch Uncle Dane. He gives good tips about building placements on different maps.
Move up gear when required, you may need an escort to distract enemy team while your lvl3 redeploys. Ask for help of Pyros (and sometimes Demos if no Pyro present, but most won't comply) to deny uber or defend your sentry. Scatter your buildings against collateral damage. Teles don't need to cover a long distance to be useful, but making an alternative long path abit shorter and keeping it hidden always appreciated.

Those classes and sniper are the only skill based classes though. Everything else has a slight meta learning curve, and then you kind of have a skill cap. The difference between someone with 500 hours on heavy, vs 5000 hours on heavy is non existant. However a 500 hour soldier vs a 5000 hour soldier is a HUGE difference. (even b4nny only has like 3000 hours on soldier)
