yeah, having very little character knowledge is nothing compared to a complete lack of fighting game fundamentals. Try and get (a different) friend to teach you basics of offense (things like combos/throws/highs/lows) and defense (blocking/spacing/teching grabs). While your at it see if you can do things like fighting eachother while using a very limited section of a certain character's moves. This way you can see the strengths and utility of everything at your disposal but in smaller and more manageable chunks.

I have friends that aren't fighting game players that visit sometimes and sometimes they'll be down to playing Skullgirls and GG. Your friend lording his experience over you is douchey as fuck. I always, ALWAYS tell them first: "Before we go straight in, do you want to hit training mode or want any tips? I don't mind waiting, I can play DS." If they want to go straight to fighting, I always offer "Yo, you want to take corners to learn your moves a bit?" They usually take that. From there I hold back enough that I don't give away a victory but I make sure they learn from each fight and it's at least a little bit close. By the end of each night, I have to start actively fighting not to lose, and that to me is what fighting games should be about. That should be the standard behavior for playing fighting games local, fighting games are notorious for a high entry barrier, and it's tryhard spergs like your friend that keep people too afraid to actually try and learn them.

GG has one of the best turorials and trials are great to get a grip of whatever character you want. Melty, like UNIEL, doesn't really have a tutorial or anything that would help a newbie so you would need to look into some outer source. I do however recommend you pick up Melty since it's a fun game that has good amount of depth but doesn't require so much high execution to be good at it, or at least, enjoy yourself in it.
Plus it's Nasu-shit so everything has funky names

It has an arcade mode and a shit ton of characters each with their own ending video, but no more in-depth story mode or anything. Ghost battles are fun, basically a faux online ranked mode where you play against the CPU and progress through ranks with the AI becoming harder as well. There's also a time attack and survival mode, but I haven't touched them. They're probably exactly what they sound like.
