I don't plan on the player flying anything bigger than a fighter, but having to fight against larger ships with turrets and stuff seem like a given. It's part of the reason I've been working on pic related. The other part being that I want the player's weapons to also be turreted to make mouse flying easier.

Simplify a lot more. Reduce the noise of the whole tile.

Pick a little more depth and add in different hues, instead of just different values.

The grass and the wall clash because their colour schemes and values are so different. You have to change one or the other to be closer or to add in some transition art between them.

Overall it is a really nice design, so try and tweak before going in for full re-draws.

So with GM:S I can display fps but I cannot seem to get it to display decimal values with it. Does anyone know what I would need to do in order to get (i.e.) 58.3 to show up instead of just 58?

I meant more in terms of a ship to fleet role. Going back to the freespace example, you couldn't go near that type of corvette because it'd shred you. Instead you'd be screening your allied corvettes against enemy bombers/fighters so they can go over and kill it.

Of course, missions were still scripted so you got to fly around the deathstar and blow up it's reactor.

You may already have a completely different gameplay loop already knocking about in your head, which is fine. I was just curious.

Oh, I see. I'm aiming for a very arcade approach, so while larger ships would definitely be more dangerous and require care when fighting, it wouldn't be so dangerous that you couldn't do it at all. I do really like the idea of having backup and friendlies though, even if they would mostly be for distractions than anything else. I like when it's not just you. Plus it just looks cool.

But I'm just ideaguying at this point though. I'm nowhere near close enough to really say anything like that.

I think I'll add the melee attack. Just spent the last few hours wrestling with the hand rig not exporting properly.

Note to anyone else who attempts 3D LibGDX: Don't go overboard on control bones and extra constraints in your rig, the Blender G3D exporter can be really unreliable with non-deforming bones.

How much animation do you want?
If you can't draw, low poly is ultimately easier because animation is just tweening instead of drawing new frames. The downside is there's more effort required to setup a model so it's ready

I'd prefer at least a decent amount of animation because I want the world to feel alive.
I'm not as concern with the amount of polygons or pixels than I am with animations.

So maybe that means 3D models would be more ideal for me. Sadly, I'm extremely compulsive and pretty bad at 3D modeling, so I'll probably have to practice with that a lot more, if I go down that route.

What's the best way of doing modularity/ composition for game objects in Unity?

Say I want to give my player a gun. I want to make this gun from different component effects. So it can have any number of

I can just stick a "GunType.ICE" (enum) property on it or something and make it behave slightly differently. It doesn't seem like creating monobehavior scripts for tiny pieces of data like that is the best way to do it.

Previous polls showed GM and Unity to be in the lead, by a fair margin. Probably correlated with the fact that when a beginner asks what engine to use, the usual answer is "3D: Unity; 2D: GM". Following that is UE4, then with half of GM's number Godot, Monogame, and enginedev iirc.

GLFW does as well, but it's designed around it and has a considerably simpler API to do so. SDL comes with a bunch of useless stuff and requires you to link to more libraries like SDL_image and SDL_mixer anyways (unless you really want to program a sound engine on top of raw PCM submission and write glue code between another image loading library and SDL). SFML comes with everything but it's intended to be used as is and is comparatively poorly maintained.

I built my PC a little over a year ago for $700 with black friday deals. i-5 6500, Radeon r9 390, 16 GB DDR4 (they recommend 32 for a smooth experience, but I haven't even come close to needing 16) a 250GB SSD, and a 1TB HDD.

You can probably build something a little better for the same amount today, or something just as good for cheaper.

but if it's a proper RPG you probably shouldn't be playing as a Freeman-tier blank player-insert character the whole time

I liked how KotOR would have characters ask you about your past and let you decide what was true, rather than feeding you a predefined backstory

Make enemies and bosses that are actually fun to fight against, simple as that. Make them interesting, it never hurts to have a few cannon fodder bastards but tougher enemies should have unique behavior and abilities that the player has to respond to.

I think it pretty clearly isn't wrong in any moral sense. It's victimless. They're imaginary characters. It's not like it has any connection to real life violence, virtually all evidence shows that average people are capable of completely detaching entertainment from reality. The only people who care are those on the far ends of the political spectrum that feel they have to protect the populace from being exposed to something that conflicts with their personal values.

That said, most of the world is run by those very people. It would be legally smart to just keep it out of your game. A lot of countries either do not agree that entertainment is harmless, or just do not want to tolerate depictions of heinous acts, and child-killing is way, way up there in the heinous acts department.

What's the best way to efficiently perform searching, grouping and sorting operations on a collection of objects in Unity?

I'm currently thinking of using a SortedSet composed of GameObjects with some kind of script component containing a bunch of discriminator tags.

How often are you running these searches?

It would probably be quite efficient to create these collections at the start of the level. Then you just add a creature to each appropriate collection when you create the creature. If you use references, the collections won't even take that much memory.

For example, you could add a chicken to wingedCreatureList, bipedalCreatureList, and perhaps a hashmap mapping size (key) to set/list of creatures (value).

That way you're creating the collections only once, instead of iterating through every single object at multiple points during the game.

Apparently the order in which UI Text is drawn is directly tied to the Canvas hierarchy.
The children are always drawn first.
The Z position of the UI elements doesn't matter.
So right now when I want that not to be the case, I'm going to have to rewrite my script and do some fucking voodoo magic to retain the positions of the two moving objects with the parent reversed.

First time posting here. Please help me to find the game engine that could fit to my needs. Checked the engines in the OP, but i dont think they would fit.

In my head it mostly works like an adventure-game. Player can move on backgrounds and interact with things.

And also Id like to have the "feature" of "choose your own adventure games" like in inklewriter. Because there will be a lot of dialogues. So there must be a way to make look dialoges not just plain text. Faces with expressions, and so on.

Not all anime tell you stuff about friendship though. A lot of the seinen ones for example are about self-growth, and those are the ones you should perhaps watch instead of your usual shounen ones.

But anime talks aside, it's up to you to decide whether your friends are worth having in your life or not, as blunt as it is. Personally I don't have anyone anymore but one friend, and even regarding that friend, whenever I end up talking to him, I realize how much time I lose, and I sometimes get the idea of cutting contacts too, so I get where you're going from. With that said I won't since it's just a few hours every few days or so. In your case it seems to be a bigger problem.

Others can't bring you happiness anyway, unless you're a girl with a girly mentality leeching off a guy or something. You need to grab this yourself, that's what I learned along the way. Also forget about girls, 99% of the time you'll just end up hurt and waste a few years of your life.

I have one or two friends like this that I really want to keep. Yeah, well in that case you need to be more strict. If one of your friends tell you hi, decide whether you want to reply or not, and if you do, decide for how long you're allowing yourself to spend time with them. You also need to learn how to say "no". If you're afraid to hurt them, then be open with them, if they're really your friend(s), they'll listen and try to understand. They could even become a motivating factor if you're trying to impress them or something, idk.

All in all, find your own middle ground. You might be too soft with people, and that's what causing your downfall.

I'm having a weird issue in debugging in C# where going to the next step skips a bunch of lines. It happens with stepping in, and also changes a variables value randomly when it does it. If I get rid of the breakpoint it just acts like I hit continue instead.

I'm pretty aware of the potential headache/confusion factor - I remember a lot of AvP 2010 reviews back in the day mentioning the Alien campaign being tough to play because of the high speed + wall shifting. The way the control scheme works in my little prototype requires you to press/hold shift to actually do the shifting - otherwise, you just stay stuck to your current gravitational axis and the movement is just traditional.

The reason that some people enjoy watching dorfs is because it's a complex simulation and a very board scope of things can happen (also, autism).
A harem game has way less stuff going on and way less stuff that can feasibly happen so
A) there's not much reason to code a turing passable AI when you can feasibly write every line of dialogue yourself.
B) The whole idea is way off the autism charts. Maybe if you were talking about some sort of sims-equse soap opera game where you could manipulate what certain characters said and did and watch how the drama unfolds with a sizable cast of characters; that'd potentially be of interest to someone if it was done really well. But a harem game where you're not the main character and the girls don't actively interact with the player isn't going to appeal to people who like harem games OR normal people.
Essentially what you're talking about is an RPG or VN where you give the MC objectives now and then and then you watch what amounts to a cutscene as the bot plays all the dialogue choices and gameplay for you. That barely qualifies as a game.

i dont know exactly what df uses but it is definitely not that advanced. i would guess that it uses some kind of goal oriented system

it should also be mentioned that having an advanced AI basically means shit unless the AI acts or communicates in ways that the player can see. in most cases making an AI appear smarter is just a result of adding more contextual animations or dialog. dwarf fortress basically has no graphics so adding actions or dialog is trivial and thus the simplistic ai has much more options for appearing intelligent

I dunno, but I always hated how AI was treated as simply stupid dumb basic logic.

When I learned about fuzzy logic, I remember making a stupid game maker game where AI bots were spawn in two groups and each one started to shoot to the other group using fuzzy logic.

It was extremelly fun to see it unfold, and it was just using fuzzy logic, which is baby tier to implement.

I would love to see a RTS game where I simply see two countries engage in war without human interaction.

Some people find joy when they see bots fighting each other, I remember making huge wars in the AoEII editor seeing how the bots kill each other.

It's not a game if there's no human interaction. At minimum let the player chose what units hit the field or how one side's defense's are set up and what their grand strategy or disposition is, otherwise it's just a gimmicky toy.

Look at gratuitious space battles/tank battles or totally accurate battle simulator if you don't understand what I'm getting at here.

well the main problems with Loomis is that the logic behind his guides are arbitrary and breakdown easily.

-head measurements are pathetically bad when you take into account that head sizes vary greatly... his woman there has an fat hollywood head (hollywood historically love fatheaded people because it works better on camera)
