Blessing of limne edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Ever lost a game because an opponent researched a critical spell and wipe your army? Won't happen in this game!

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/vanheimageofvidya/discussions/1/135

Very difficult research.

Maybe we'll have extra gold, gems, or resources. What do you think, /domg/?
>>
>>166885209
very difficult research makes strong early game nations stronger; makes strong researchers with solid middle game options much stronger and makes strong researchers win by default if they hit late game research

very difficult research is a bad setting
>>
2 more for RolePlayingIsFun
>>
>>166885829
i really enjoyed the game I played with difficult research. It seemed to make the midgame last longer, and I find the midgame much more fun than late game.
>>
>>166886854
So you say difficult would be better than very difficult? Very difficult is a little absurd, 200 to level 1. Someone mentioned a mount and blade mod, this is pretty close.
>>
>>166887032
I don't know if difficult or very difficult would be better. I've never played very difficult. I'm just saying I enjoyed difficult.
>>
Are there any guides out there on late game tech route priorities, power scaling and battle strategies?

I'm finishing up a couple games where I planned and executed strategies early into midgame pretty well but then got out scaled hard due to not having a end game plan such as utilizing gems on summoning big mages/or high hp blood summons in the 6/7+ tech trees.
>>
>>166887934
No, because it depends SUPER hard. It's going to be different for every nation, and moreover your exact priorities will depend on what your opponents are using. For instance if you're up against golems, you need either magic phase moving water bottle carriers or actual thugs, whereas if you're up against living thug spamming you can use leech / LfL whereas if you're up against an opponent whose armies are a small core of cheap mages and heavy infantry you might want a thug with battlefield clear and on it goes.
>>
>>166885829

t. buttblasted blood nation
>>
>>166873920
what if you could use gems to speed up research?
>>
>>166888670
blood is fine with v difficult research to be honest. Usually you want blood when you get your blood hunters and patrollers and such set up, and with very difficult research you can start going for blood right away and have an income by the time you hit your spells
>>
So far the only very difficult research game also had 75% site frequency. It also was in MA, and involved banning lots of nations.

Would be interesting to see how a very difficult research game would handle without those added settings.

How do you fix the summod Barbarian crash? Is there a missing sprite in my version of the mod? It's only a single-player game so I won't be delaying anything but I'd like to sort this before it comes up in multiplayer.

>>
>>166891052
It's the missing sprite that will immediately trigger a crash, since barbarians can appear on the overland map. Other missing sprites won't immediately cause the crash because they often tie to national summons and so on that you won't necessarily see.

Welp. Only elves left now are the hillbilly wood elves.

In other news I have finally done something in this game and taken the fight to the rats. It was actually a rather short fight. The skaven cast some sort of unknown spell that hurt everyone and caused most of their own forces to rout.

>>
>>166921181

>>166921837
Blade wind would have done fuck all in that storm. The ones you did cast barely hit anything. Damn, I wish you had put that rescript in. I might have won.
>>
>>166921837
>I also think Arco cast an earthquake that killed more of his chaff than mine
2 Earthquakes, and that's what killed a good chunk of your mages. My chaff was mostly irrelevant, your boar warriors would have chewed through them anyway.

>I also don't think my magic duelers worked?
The magic duelers actually killed two of my mages which hurt me pretty bad with how narrow the margins were.
>>
>>166923479
Already plenty painful m8
My revised script was to actually let my troops do most of the heavy lifting, using blade winds to kill chaff and force a rout with my E2s while my E1s cast Earth Meld on the flanks to try and bog your chariots down, while my S2s just cascaded all day erry day.

Didn't know you had storm access, when I really should have.

So! Knowing what I know now, I'm going to be doing some changes to my general strategy actually. Round 2 is gonna be fun

>>166923853
Invulnerable 25 is the same as 25 prot against mundane damage, so it's no wonder I killed him right quick with mass axes, especially since there was no repelling.
>>
>>166923853
inv, ethereal and mistform are all against mundane weapons. a lucky magic shot will fuck him up, and mistform and inv count as additional def and additional prot respectively

if you send one inv commander against a hundred chaff, he will get swarmed as every attack in the same turn hits harder

actually, most early buff magic is only really effective against chaff. magical attacks, physical and casted will fuck you up. it's why it's not recommended to have low hp thugs

>>
>>166925309
No. You don't do more damage just because defense is lower. There are two seperate checks. Att v Def is likelyhood of a hit, and Damage v. Prot is how much damage occurs. The first doesn't impact the second except in a determination of hit/nohit/shieldhit.

>>166925546
Yeah, I'm not complaining. A big part of Arco's troubles have been because he isn't actually good at RP. He started off by saying something without realizing how other RPing characters would interpret it, and then accused them of acting OOC ... for *not* using meta knowledge to determine he wasn't actually declaring war on everyone at once.
>>
>>166925438
>Also also, using your fliers to attack rear on turn 1 would have been way more beneficial
They'd never have actually made it to your rear. I just needed blockers. Most of my mercs deserted me so I was critically low on bodies.

It was high risk but I thought there was a tiny chance I'd actually dislodge you from my capital and remain a player, even if a small one.

Being only underwater nation, it would be easy to quess how my game went...mainly raiding and not being able to hold my land provinces.

UNF by far has the best. Strong sacred summons, great antirush capacity, decent lategame paths. In a game without xibalba, Lanka has the best lategame, and Yomi and TC have great summons.

RPGcodex, domg, vanheim, SA, dom4mods, and TROW all have cool stuff. TLF will dominate underwater.

RPGnet, Teamliquid, and Clockwork seem to have a different idea of the game.

Chopin is obscure?
>>
>>166933051
Mictlan still has a better lategame than Lanka, since aztec summons > Lanka summons. Ozzies are better than any unit summon Lanka has, and puchis are hilariously better than Dakini.

Dom4mods team looks overly focused though, and potentially vulnerable to a rush. Domg team has no such weakness as they have EA Vanheim to protect them.

I'd say most likely winners are either the UNF team or the domg team given team comps. TLF is more or less a shoe in for a dominant and relevant power thanks to Pelagia, but I'm not sure they can actually win if the game goes late.
>>
>>166933394

Lanka summons aren't nearly as outclassed as you make them sound (asrapas are mostly worse than ozlols, but cheap and spammy at 5 for 11 bloodslaves; Dakini are better than puchi at most things, if twice as expensive), and their lategame gets really unstoppable from undead spam. Having armies of undead pour over every border is invaluable, especially when a dakini can drop by and give them all flying and+4 strength at will. Theres a reason Lanka is #2 after xibalba, and it's not because they don't have a top tier late game.
>>
>>166934484
They're not hopeless but they're specialized to fighting an aquatic war. You thus will probably conquer the seas completely but then you'll be left with the herculean task of challenging land nations with mediocre amphibious troops. You might be able to overcome this with creative magic tactics (n9 golems, communions, aquatic commanders with blessing of limne, ice elementals, and so forth) but it doesn't make for a particularly fun stretch of play.

Oh, I'm not denying Lanka's lategame isn't top tier, I just put Mictlan as #1 (Xib is better because they can actually reach that lategame) and Lanka at #3.

Asrapa aren't really much cheaper pound for pound than rain of jaguars, and what Puchi's do better than Dakini is possibly one of the most difficult to counter aspect of the game (blood assassination). For 1/2 price.

Really though, much will depend on who the map removes. First test involved 2 nations totally enclosed by an enemy team, and Berytos couldn't be further from the coast. Also, Jomon and EA Vanheim shared a cap ring, so I can only imagine what would happen there.

How many slaves/turn should I be getting by turn 12 as a heavy blood nation?

In practise games, my actual blood economy was, I would guess, thirty slaves/turn with the Sanguine Dowsing Rods I'd just developed by turn 12. It was about fifteen slaves a turn before that. I was just building a second fort, which would be the base of another round of six blood mages, ensuring that by turn 18 my blood slaves/turn would be about 60. Hopefully by turn 24 it would be 90, but I don't know if that's realistic/how the game works.

This translated to 3 Rakshasa per 10 Blood Slaves, incidentally.

honestly that seems about right

>>166987806

exact numbers are pointless, but you have to balance summoning with research with blood hunting. You might not summon anything at all until you hit certain research goals (aka Air Elementals or something that can be used to fight), and then deploy like 20 blood hunters and start earning 100 slaves/turn.

also don't buy rakshasa. Buy storm demons and dakini.
>>
>>166988793
>Storm Demons + Dakini
How come?
>>
>>166987806
>>166988605
You probably won't even have enough research to use blood slaves until turn 10 or so.

Ideally, you'll wait until you also have const4 to start heavy-duty blood hunting, as SDR makes it much more efficient. Only start hunting heavily earlygame if you need the slaves for a war.

Does expanding against other users do anything after a point?

I feel that at my current I can sit on my ass gathering researchers and searching for gems and I could feasibly do it until I've strip searched all my provinces and without any sort of immediate threat or another player starts looking too big to ignore.

Should I expand aggressively or start gathering late game resources?

dakini can cast mass flight, and storm, and don't cost gold. They can hunt up the slaves for another dakini in fairly short order.

Storm demons are great and they are more great the more you get. They fly in storms and get huge +stats in storms and shoot lightning and are also good in melee.

no other lanka summons are as good or as efficient. Maybe Mandeha for the darkness, but even that's a frivolity when you get right down to it. Or demon lords for paths, I guess.

>>
>>167004017
>Is the basic plan: use recruited blessed Sacreds to expand while setting up a blood economy + research, then just mass spam Storm demons + reanimate for chaff?
Pretty much

Hinnom having recruitable big giant chassis does make them fine at thugging, I'm just hesitant to say that it's better than Lanka since I would think that Lanka could overtake Hinnom's thugging capability pretty easily once they get a blood economy and start spamming dakini's, which can all cloud trapeze around the place. Hinnom's giants don't really have the paths to do SC'ing, either.
>>
>>167005778
What DOES Hinnom do better, then? Magic wise it seems they're just a more restricted Lanka, without Air and with a little Earth.
>>
>>167006123
Uh, nothing? Hinnom is one of the worst nations in the game.

Hinnom does have a stronger early rush, since size 5 high morale tramplers can crush certain nations, but that's more or less it.

Support your armies with mages
Don't doomstack
Don't play against the AI past a certain point if you want to play MP, the strats you use against the AI do not work against other players
Look up the /v/anheim magic guide
Look up every single unit in the inspector, even if you think you know what they do. You will have missed something.
Don't recruit indies, until you figure out which indies are good.
Sitesearch manually with whatever 2+ path mages you have. If you have a dude with more than 1 magic path that is also fine. Don't bother with any remote sitesearching spells except for arcane probing.

In Summod they have three more base prot, and get an extra attack, which makes them slightly less useless. If memory serves Cronemod had those buffs AND made them size 3, which was pretty huge.

If nothing else they are fantastic for sieging stuff down. I'd never get more than maybe two or three Chiefs, but those can churn out Draconians forever, which can help you crack forts open real good like.

Oh. First get earthpower (conj 3) in order to cast strength of giants (ench 3), legions of steel (const 3), iron and marble warriors (alt 5 and 7) with E2s. Use water bracelets (const 6) to cast Quickness and Quickening (alt 4 and 8), and fire resistance if you are fighting someone with big fire access on E1W1s. Cast magma eruption (evo 6) with F1E2s, cast rain of stones (evo 7) with A1E2s or A1E1s and earth boots. Ulms mages are weird because you have the good warrior smiths, and the overpriced shamans. Occasionally they end up having enough paths to be useful, but for a 135 gold 7 RP mage that /might/ roll D2, E2 or a useful crosspath is pretty shit compared to the warrior smiths, which cost 30 less and have a forge bonus

>>
>>167013152

In summod Draconians is 40 gems and gets you a chief and 15 Draconians. Great Eagles is 10 gems for 5+ Great Eagles. Assuming you're using an A3 for both, that'd be five turns for Draconians to produce equivalent siegepower.

If you've got someone with higher Air doing the summoning, it'll take longer for Draconians to break even.
>>
>>167013443
Wait, draconians have the same seige value as great eagles unit per unit? Or did you forget to divide the draconian value by 4 due to costing 4x as much?

Only a little. LA Arco's elephants are excellent expanders, and with high enough prod you can use its hoplites as lineholders for your indy crossbows, since they'd be MM1 anyways. Between elephants serving as a breaker-squad until magic answers come up and REALLY sturdy front lines for the x-bows that everyone uses, Arco's troop lineup is actually pretty good.
>>
>>167019458
Oh certainly, but you have to actually go find indie xbows, and you might get unlucky and end up with only plate cuirass ones. But yeah, Arco's troops are certainly good

Sitesearch. Assuming you're the Ermor anon, dark knowledge (conjuration 3) lets you find all D sites in a given province, and setting it to a monthly cast automatically searches all provinces in range, which is quite efficient in terms of mage turns.
>>
>>167023080

>>167023257
All provinces in range of the province he's located in. Dark Knowledge has a 3 province range, so every province within that radius will be searched in turn until you run out of death gems or provinces to search.

>>167023395
so provinces three provinces away will be searched?

actually speaking of skeleton war, that game is going to die due to player morale before anything else
because every province will be a fort

Seiging and storming a fort means a net change of 2 death gems eventually.

And because we're all Ermor and not all Lemuria breaking forts will be quite easy.

The micro of moving shitloads of skeletons around on the other hand, and sorting the skeletons . . . brrrrr

I'm about 8 hours deep, playing as an underwater nation feels weird. I kinda like conquering the seas and using my newfound manpower and wealth to bolster an invasion force to use on unsuspecting land niggers. It's pretty cool.

That fucking battle was brutal.

I'd already lost a third of my atavi archers due to bad scripting, then everything that could have gone wrong did.

Caulum had some pretty good scripting as well, when we slammed he cast storm and we were in cold province which BTFO of my heat wave.

What I couldn't understand is why my guys were doing so shit against your spire horn warrior, seems like they couldn't land a single hit. I get that they were outnumbered pretty badly, but I hardly even took half my number with me, and abysia are supposed to have super heavy infantry.

I guess they just weren't tanky enough or didn't have good offence, but still, shit luck. gg Caelum, but it ain't over yet.

Siege values are (strength^2 / 100)
+1 for flying

So a draconian is (<18 x 18> / 100)
324 / 100

3.24 +1 (flying)

=4.24 sieging strength.

A great eagle is 14.24 Same strength, so same calculations as Draconians, but +10 siege bonus)

5 x 14.24 = 71.2 siege strength per casting of summon great eagles by an A3 caster.

16 (15 draconians and chief) x 4.24 = 67.84

So roughly 1 turn of summoning, unless I got that math really off.

Ragha went AI after getting the ol' double dicking sandwich. Ironically he still had a critical mass of overpowered sacreds at that point.
Atlantis is at war with Tien Ch'i and Utgard.
Ulm is vulturing provinces and Marignon is somehow still alive on 3 forts and nothing else.
AI Jomon finally died.

I predict Ulm will be the winner if he gets off his ass and actually fights someone. He's probably got a thousand vampires at this point.

>>
>>167046891
the problem is it isn't 5*14.24, it's 20*14.24 = 284.8

You actually need around 51 turns of summoning to match even an A3 casting Great Eagles.
>>
>>167046891

Hurray, I definitely did!

4.5 x 71.2 = 320.4

so for ~ 45 gems I can get 320.4 siege strength from Summon Great Eagles, or 67.84 from Contact Draconians.

320.4 (initial cast of summon great eagles) - 67.84 (initial cast of contact draconians) = 252.56

252.56 / 4.24 ( siege strength) = 59.5660377358

or about 60 turns.

astral fires is an okay spell under some circumstances but it is not a good spell or what ermor should be aiming for. Replacing national troops with all the summons they can get, as well as fire elemental/mass buff communions, and a grab bag of tools like firestorm and rigor mortis to deal with tough foes.
>>
>>167055846
I like Conj 5 / Thaum 1, and then evo for stellar cascades (since conj got your LotNS)
>>
>>167056113

S1 SC isn't a bad move but Conj 5/Thau 1 has a much more important option - Summon Fire Elemental. 65g mages spamming fire elementals is brutal. Incredibly, pretenderfuckingly brutal. Once you have fire elementals, cascades, fireball, incinerate, bonds of fire, paralyze, soul slay, rigor, horde of skeletons, firestorm, vitriols, terracotta warriors, longdead horse, and mass buffs (especially from master matrix'd E random flamen), you're off to the races and can switch up your strategy enough to make taking out one of your mage balls a difficult proposition.

How
>>
I found out relatively early on that I was close to a level 3 throne. Seeing that Mari hadn't take a throne in his cap circle made me think that it was probably a level 2 as well. I was considering rushing Mari in year 2, and then trying to nab all the thrones needed once Mari's cap was sieged, but I wanted to be a mercenary instead.

The whole neutral merc thing didn't work, in part because I was essentially tied for the lead with Arco. It's hard to get paid to attack someone when you're the scary person that needs to be attacked. If I did manage to avoid committing directly, the game also wasn't close to even, so I wouldn't have had an easy time switching sides even if I weren't so big myself; I basically would have been stuck with growing or fighting the leader alongside everyone else.

Between that and the fact that people were already starting to fight me, I abandoned my plan to sell items and hit people with magic attacks the whole game and actually went for the win. I had a very fortunate start being near the level 3 throne, and since I was so big I bordered more than enough unforted points to win. I also hit Blood 8, which made it extremely safe, since I can just magic up thrones before it's even mechanically possible to stop my claiming.

Anyways, I didn't have any really great fights or anything. Just ate a staler, organized a coalition & attacked Arco because he was kinda snowballing, and then fought Mictlan for a little bit.

Good on you. My own game was mostly characterized by poor expansion followed by declaring war on the wrong blob because of shitty scouting.

Tested the expansion as well. Several times. But in the actual game everything that could have gone wrong did. My High Priests got sniped before they could get their own bless up TWICE. Left me much smaller than I was happy with, although the performance of the N9E9 Tomb Guards/Sneks in combat was fantastic. Particularly once I started rolling 'em out with Sauromancers.

Ok Niefelheim and Ur, you had your fun dogpilling me while I was dealing with Abysia. (Who btw killed my prophet in a honest, unintentional bump by my side and even had the balls to threatened me afterwards). Now is the time to retreat and cede back all my territory or you will meet the same fate as Abysia - who is, btw, stronger and bigger than you guys and this happened to his army. Pic very related.

You basically say "please give me the lands you conquered from indies and my weak ass expansion party you collided with because my expansion sucks ass, as I took an awake E6 snek (or whatever) on a nation with good thugs and okay sacreds that warrant at least one major". Yeah, sure, I'll just hand over several free provinces to an entitled scrub who doesn't even know his nation and is gonna be eaten by Nick in 3 turns.

Then I'm being all nice and like "how about I just give you a province I, ME, MYSELF took from indies near your fort and these gems, and you be a reasonable person and accept a freebie from a stranger who doesn't want to immediately eat you". >>
>>167104632
Erf snek is overrated. In most cases even if you get more provinces than your opponents you won'y be able to keep all your juicy provinces against a blessrush nation or birds or elves or what have you. Investing in bless for nations with good sacreds equals investing in great late-game. Investing in erf snek equals investing in a short-term advantage.
>>
>>167104632
Why'd you post a shitty dragon then

>>167105108
Precisely this. You have a shitload of provinces that you can't hold, and you look like a big juicy target for a year 2 war. Now if you're taking an awake snake on a nation with actually good troops that are capable of holding their own, ignore the above, but if you took the snake to make up for your shit troops it doesn't make your troops any less shit. And the snake doesn't fare well against other players.

I whipped up a test mod that was kind of similar. It had two nations with cheap national spells that summoned blocks of units, three progressively better recruit-able commanders to lead them, and nothing else. The idea was that they'd clash over some central location with their summoned hordes, and whichever nation held it after a set number of turns would be declared the winner. I didn't really take into account PD though so it got really lopsided pretty quickly.

You might want to copy that and make it more Footman Wars-y.
>>

some nations have impossibly shit troops.

but yes. Things like archers, calvalry, giant troops, animal troops, monsters, flying, ethereal, and of course high stats offer a considerable amount of tactical options.

And if you put everything in a big block in the center of the field while playing normally you know jack shit about in game tactics. A proper calvary flank wins battles.

>>167099892
not every mistake means you are new. it's not like there's only one way to play withe very nation.

talking about troop tactics

I've read two tactics regarding troops with the same role / same damage but different prot and hp

tactic 1: put the weaker troops in front to serve as chaff(ier) troops and weaken the enemy. they will last less but will leave a fatigued enemy against better troops that would have minimal loses

tactic 2: mix the squads. since troops gang up in squares and numbers, the more defenseless troops have more chances of hitting and killing enemies, at the cost of more casualties on the better troops

Which is the best tactic, or simply your favourite?

>>167108380
the best thing to do would be to create mod nations for a troop only game, and perhaps include the ermors and other diverse troop nations.

Plus if we create nations / modify existing nations for more military options, we could add new troops with stats and traits not generally present in chaff. make full use of the skills the game has.
>>
>>167108939
It's common tactics to put the chaff up front. There is a cost opportunity of mixing high value soldiers with chaff due to the chaff having equal chance of being killed than a good soldier. Hence why their name is chaff. If you can assume that chaff's attacks matter they are no longer chaff, but defined something else. The reason why every army needs chaff is because the "kill" value is not equal between soldiers, but their "death" value is. Between 1 chaff and a good soldier both with 10 hp and they die you can assume that you lose more "killing" value with the death of the soldier than the chaff. Not all deaths are equal. Think of an army as a single organism. The chaff is the skin there to protect you, the good soldiers are like muscle there to move and kill. If an opponent strikes and you lose skin, you can replace that skin easier than muscle. On the other hand if you lose muscle in a brawl you cannot strike your opponent with mere skin alone.

I don't know if this makes any sense I'm high off pain, and pain meds.
>>
>>167110136
Please be high off pain meds more often, that was a fucking poetic description and good advice to boot
>>
>>167110348
>/domg/: Dominions and Opiate Medication General
>>
>>167108939
I like to put chaff up front, enough that it won't run out, and set the better units to the sides. Which is mostly like tactic 1, when it works the way I like.
>>
>>167110136
Also I forgot to mention when the opponent attack and you lose skin the opponent is paying the opportunity to strike your skin, which in effect costs double when you consider that your opponent should've hit your muscles, not your skin to further reduce his own vulnerabilities from being struck by your muscles. This metaphor (I think I suck at English) is in relation to the opportunity cost of hitting chaff versus hitting good soldiers. If you mix your chaff with good soldiers then you are effectively hedging your opponents attacks. Hedge is a financial term I hope everyone can understand. If your opponent was trying to strike your good soldier it might hit your chaff instead, which is why it's a hedge. But hedges are a double edged sword as the previous post explained. so a weaker front line is better?

however see two things worth mentioning:

1. Many nations have escalating troop quality but rarely change their attack value. Ergo if there's a better quality troops on the other side they all become chaff. Wouldn't it be better to do mixed squads to increase the chances of better troops surviving?

2. Every attack matters and if a powerful troop is surrounded by chaff that can't touch his armor and good soldiers that can, each attack gives a better chance of hitting and hitting the head. The same effect is attained with good soldiers, but at the risk of losing more of them per turn the enemies survive.

I'm just crunching probabilities. I find MA ermor to be an very tactics heavy nation in early game and i'm wondering about troop distribution and whether I should mix squads with the same role or not.

>>167110868
This is admittedly true, but I think depends on the opponent. If your enemy has archers you have to put some manner of body fodder up front or risk losing important troops. Same with offensive spells.

However if you are fighting giants or sacreds with normal humans, your troops do effectively jack shit, specially if they have reinvigoration which means the front line chaff can barely fatigue them. I think a mixed army would be more helpful to that effect

I guess that i t d e p e n d s on what you are fighting against.

I have drastically different formations based on what I'm fighting and what I've seen my opponents script

>so a weaker front line is better?
When possible, mostly at smaller scale engagements and especially when fighting indies, the ideal is to have a block of chaff make contact with the enemy line, the enemy hits the chaff, then the next turn your block of good troops fall upon the enemy from a slight flank and gets a lot of free kills off. Even after the first round the enemy will be mostly occupied with the chaff.

A rule of thumb I use for this, that's maybe accurate 4 out of 10 times or so because I'm lazy and not that good at it, is to have your chaff positioned 3 turn's worth of movement in front of your good units, with the good units a bit off to the side. Also again this really only holds for battles up to around 100 units per side or so, which for this and many other reasons I think would be the ideal scale of battle in a no magic game. Once you get much higher than that and it's mostly all just a big blob with some consideration for placement of different troop types.

I hope we can all already assume that this point only applies to melee infantry and does not consider archers at all. let alone the complex of magic.

>1. Many nations have escalating troop quality but rarely change their attack value
If their "killing" value does not increase usually their defensive value increases, which means they're just thicker skin. No matter how thick your skin is, if you don't have muscles to hit, then skin means nothing.
> if there's a better quality troops on the other side they all become chaff.
I don't think you can equate other soldiers that simply. All soldiers are in relation to their nation. If you have a single militia in the whole army, it does not automatically make it above chaff value, because you have to compare it to what is available to the nation.
Again if you mix squads their "killing" value averages and lower the overall killing value possible for the army because any one of them can die just as easily, but chaff cannot hit as hard as good soldiers can.

for point 2. definitely. Due to RNG (like in real life) if you play the lottery enough you'll eventually win, no matter how insurmountable the odds are.

The real discussion is with the addition of the complexities of magic. Archery adds a killing value that lacks any defensive value. Kind of like a 3rd arm without skin. It's useful to hit things with, but if it gets hurt at all it'll become infected and die.

I think my high wore off for me to discuss magic well enough. With magic positioning value matters less. The argument of mixing chaff with good soldiers becomes invalid because any one of them can now die just as easily as the other when it comes to magic. Magic's killing value is through the roof, but severely limited. It's kind of like a gun in a fistfight. It'll kill anything you accurately (very important) shoot, but if you fight more than what you have ammunition for you're in trouble and will have to rely on muscles that are sore from the recoil of the gun aka fatigue. Usually with magic it can be summarized as having category of: killing power, accuracy and ammo. Each category self-explanatory by their absence of; without killing power non'a dis matter; without accuracy that cannon will either hit the dirt or your own troops; without ammo you better hope you kill them the first time.

>With magic positioning value matters less.

depends entirely

put a single 1 soldier squad in front of the army and you completely shit on any turn one evo magic and archer voleys.
>>
>>167112361
>With magic positioning value matters less.
This is incredibly, radically untrue. Positioning, as well as type of troop, matters more against mages than against other troops. Most important are high-HP evocation soakers. Mages preferentially target squares with the highest HP density - putting 2 25hp ogres in a square will make it targeted over a square with 3 10hp humans. This matters not only for keeping evocations away from your mages (usually having as much HP as your usual troops) but also for letting your more killy troops get through the enemy line and kill enemy mages. This is the main purpose of mages until you get to battlefield-evo levels: kill enough enemy troops that your survivors can get through and get the real work done. It doesn't particularly matter what gets through since they're usually fighting fatigued out low-prot units so it's best to bring as much cheap stuff as possible.

fighting Niefel is pretty simple
divide and conquer

no matter how strong their individual stacks are Niefel never has the numbers available to guard every front; you just avoid direct confrontation and keep taking provinces until their economy collapses
>>
I also totally misunderstood what a capring was.

I thought it was just your entire expansion circle, not the provinces surrounding your capital.

Lol, I told Caelum he was "In my capring" when I was about 5-6 provinces south of my capital.

Uh, Niefel is an SC nation, so unless your armies can easily remove SCs (this is by no means impossible, but can be a challenge for certain nations) it means they're typically more mobile, and have far more individual 'stacks' as it were than your typical human nation.

If it can kill the enemy's army, it's an SC. If it dies, it was merely a thug.
