Actually I used to main Cho'Gath like two years ago at I think Plat 3 EUW, ~300k mastery.
I think the reason he isn't popular is because his kit is extremely punishing and unreliable and you can relatively easily lose your lane if you get camped.
Cho'Gath was enjoyable with the old triforce that gave AP because then his damage became a lot more reliable.

While boxes are entirely blocked by red trinkets, nobody has them early, and even then, people rarely use them properly to counter the support Shaco. The boxes, with 45% cdr and at least 5 out at all time, provide you more peel than most mage supports like Brand/Zyra.

Also, I got to D3 with it, so it can't be that bad. No other support has the same early turn potential as a support Shaco, I'm telling you that. The amount of ganks that came bot and resulted in kills for my adc is actually mind boggling.

The new ward hurt it a lot, one of the other reasons I stopped playing it. Damn, writing this out made me realise just how much I miss it...
