Thanks, I'll check 'em out. I tried Over Horizon for a bit tonight. Stage 2 boss is a cool idea, as are the ice sliding blocks in Stage 3. I'm not exactly a shmup connoisseur, but I've never really played a shmup with intractable terrain like that.

Local dad shits hate PC gaming with a passion, not just because of steam's DRM but... they just hate pc gaming.

Most of them bought the garegga premium box anyways despite complaining about "muh physical disk". They desperately need something to put on their shelfs just to not play/touch it ever again. Yeah, I'll need to optimise the final boss a bit because the strategy I have for its 2nd phase now seems very risky when I get this far. Basically, I go into Double Break mode before the pattern starts to end the phase as quickly as possible.

I'll try out not using Double Break mode for the entire fight. If that won't work, then I'll just use it way earlier, so that I return to normal in time.

Define "1CC collector"
All the definitions of it that I've seen sound too vague. Does being a "1CC collector" mean never playing a game past getting a 1CC, playing only for survival, or something else?

Players who clear a lot of games, mostly by spaming bombs, not caring much about score or beauty of routes. They tend to drop a game right after clearing it and not pushing them forward. Generally not venturing further than 2-2 in looping games. Not bad players at all, but not very exciting to follow and watch.

Shmup western community is like 90% useless non-or-barely-players, 9% 1cc collectors, 1% scorers. Only a handful of the scorers are actually good. Thanksfully the scorer niche tends to be growing the last fews years.

It might have to do with the mentality that "once you see the ending and credits, you've finished the game". I don't know what might mitigate this besides maybe making the "good ending" (and credits) locked behind a certain score amount or something. I don't think there's any good way to motivate people to push to the extreme with scoring though, the game just has to click with them and make them want to continue. Maybe achievement systems might help, but I dunno. They certainly helped me in Deathsmiles to set score goals for myself but the highest score achievement is still less than half of the WR for any character, so...

On a side note, I recall seeing a few people, obviously not familiar with shmups, complaining about either Mushihimesama or Deathsmiles after they came to Steam for being "only 30 minutes long".

I firmly believe that getting stage end ranks would push some people towards self-improvement. A big fat "F" at the end of a level speaks for itself, simply a score does not. With scoring it's hard to know how well you're doing without researching it. The effect would probably be minimal though, you either get satisfaction from playing for score/until you feel like you've mastered a game or you don't.

I think it rather has to do with the amount of time you have to put into scoring. Not everyone wants to play a single game for a whole year or so. They want to play all shmups not just a handfull of them, which is totally understandable.

When I say the ship feels too fast I don't mean in response to my command but how fast it actually travels across the screen. It feels like no thought was put into the maximum movement speed of the ship in regards to the level and enemy design/layout. It FEELS like it moves faster than it should given the games current design.

Even when arcade where still a thing in Europe (15-20 years ago) I never saw any Ridge cabs. It was all about Daytona, Sega Rally and somethimes Scub Race.

But still RRs are very good consolized arcade games. RR and RRR on PS and the V on PS2 are adaptations from arcade versions, while Rage and Type 4 are full original games.
