Watch streamers that have good habits and learn them.

Learn the items and synergies that work and the ones that don't.

Practice.

Every little bit adds up. A quick rundown of tips would be don't explore more than you need to, leave spirit hearts on the ground to pick up right before going down to the next floor to protect devil deal, don't ignore the sacrifice room, 5 cents can spawn an arcade, greed won't be in the shop if there's a miniboss elsewhere on the floor, a bomb for a bomb is a good trade since it can net you a crawlspace, don't take pills that might fuck you when you don't want to be fucked (for instance a telepills in a devil deal will be bad), always shoot for permanent polaroid invincibility, port out of boss rush if you get the chance, don't take hp before a devil deal you might want afterward, kill the spawners first, and learn room patterns for rooms that have them.

I'm really bad about the last one. The bombfly room on the caves has a way to get out without getting hit but I've still yet to learn it. I finally learned the bullshit room with 3 doors, 4 spitting stone faces and the spikes that pop up in the middle. Fuck that room.

Bosses have tricks too, like Satan can't hit you with most of his attacks if you stand just next to his center halfway down the room from him and you want to always lead the Haunt and cut across him if he's about to Brimstone to avoid getting caught on a wall.

Do the challenges. Trust me. You learn a LOT of mechanics from them, and the value of Devil Deals.

I came back to Isaac after like a 2 year hiatus and shot up to 93% achievo's from about 50%, including The Lost.

Its all about knowing how to break the game and mechanics. Go for good unlocks like Moms Knife, D6, and whatnot, then work on completing each character.

R for pots for swallowed penny, once you get that, try to get IV bag from a floor 2 arcade, once you get that (or before if you're rolling in dosh), try to get restock, once you get THAT, just don't pick up something that fucks you like car battery and you can mill the shop. Your goal should be Mama Mega for the Hush door and then Chaos (in that order) into a full break. Once you're stacked enough just use Mama Mega to ensure Void access if you don't get it before then.

Another roguelite bites the dust. Finally got the starter blaster only achievement with half a hit point left after the Mothership thanks to the contact damage reduction perk. I was sweating bullets for the Nemesis fight.

Well, the original Lost unlock was designed to be unlocked through community effort. That being said, killing yourself with the Missing Poster was very unlikely to be figured out by deduction. But the Missing Poster was also the most enigmatic of items, so the community might've found the solution. A single player would've never been able to unlock the Lost.
I still don't know if that's good or bad design. Probably a bit of both.

Ambiguity is good in moderation, souls games lore is a testament to that.
I'd say shit like the Lost crosses a line where the adventure of solving the puzzle stops being fun and starts being a chore, and if it stops being fun then the puzzle stops having a purpose in the first place other than being there as filler content.
That's my opinion on the subject anyway, others may vary.

It's bad design cause it wasn't just "Die while holding the Missing Poster."
It was "Die to a Sacrifice Room's Spike while holding the Missing Post."
Which no right-minded player would figure on their own because:
A. Sacrifice Rooms quickly show that they are just for (before the update for the Angels and shit) pooping out a few chests if you got plenty of extra HP.
B. Total fucking shit.
And while a dedicated player may wonder about the Missing Poster, the chance of making this connection is slim, since the room's regular purpose has already been established.
In addition, they couldn't even figure Sacrifice Rooms being their name because it's listed nowhere, it's just "That room with some spikes."
Thus, it's really bad design. While some multiplayer games whose allure is the community can benefit from community effort projects, a single-player (with local co-op that sucks) game does not benefit from it.

This reminds me: I'd like Sulfur more if it would give Brimstone permanently when activated three times in the same room. This way it would still be a nice challenge. How do you feel about permanent progression in roguelites?
Stuff like unlocking new characters that give different playstyles I'm fine with (like BoI, FTL or Risk of Rain) but I don't like stuff like having to unlock weapons or permanent buffs by spending in-game resources (like Necrodancer or Runestone Keeper).
