As I understand it, while there's no "total HP", each of a unit's body parts has its own HP stat. Most forms of damage will also cause bleeding and pain, to which different units have different resistances. You kill things not by reducing their overall HP to zero, but by destroying vital body parts/organs like the brain, heart or torso, or simply inducing deadly conditions like bleedout.

Deep ones have weird AI, they don't really target doors, just wait for colonists to come out. Real easy to cheese them.

Also Ctulhu mods fucks you up in Tundra and Boreal forest biomes because those dark young eat everything on the map within a few days and then they start hunting your colonists and they're tough as hell.
I have 3 of them tamed and they rip most raids to shreds.

Yeah, I try to keep an eye on the dark young but then I suddenly get a notification that they're hunting one of my colonists, if I'm lucky it's in my base and my other guys can get there in time to save them, if not they're basically fucked except that time Rampage bashed one to death but she's special. I've started just hunting them down when they appear on the map, even though it's a bit of a trip to go to the edge of the map sometimes.

Good thing is it works on raiders. Most raiders I had my Dark Youngs attack had sanitly loss in their health tab. Cool stuff.

yeah, I found the mood penalty to be a bit too ridiculous so I nerfed it and also changed the flavor text from "WHAT IS THAT THING?" to variations of "wow that's pretty spooky" depending on how much of a mood penalty it gave. Much more fun. I mean, it's still pretty high, good thing The Cook is iron-willed or he'd probably go berserk from butchering all the deep one corpses.

What do you do with their meat? Anything that eats it loses its mind. Pawns can restore sanity at a typewriter table but animals are doomed. You're the rat-maze guy, right? Having a bunch of insane rats sounds cool.

I exclusively use insanity meat to make wax with, I also use insect meat when infestations happen because I get enough normal meat anyway. And leather is always nice to have, especially the tough deephide. I had two dogs that I forgot to ban from eating the meat and they went insane and killed each other. I was going to do the same thing with the rats but most of them died in an unfortunate mechanoid incident, so I just decided to replace them with some other animal. Maybe I'll make a squirrel army and they can live in the maze.

There is (or was) a limit on hives per map. I used to mine out a large area on the other side of the map from my base so that hives would spawn there and then restrict my colonists from going anywhere near it. Eventually they would reach their cap and stop expanding, and would even defend my base from raids (and caravans). Semi-important note with the comms console, it doesn't really matter much if there is a seat in front of it, as the game pauses when a trading or negotiation menu is open, so the colonist using it will only get the bonus for the second it takes for them to start the console then close it, when you close the menu.

In truth it's basically almost completely finished. I just need to sort out the thought trees and the drawsize.

Wolfers have had their thoughts properly modified, but I want them to get the bonuses for killing people that bloodlust gives. Unfortunately these thoughts are governed by <requiredTraits> which looks for everything in the list. If I make bloodlust and the dickwolf racial trait required it only fires on pawns that have both, which doesn't achieve what I want and also breaks the bloodlust trait.

Again, I don't think it's fixable in .xml but I'm giving it a bit to see if I can think of something.

Secondly, I'm trying to make the game draw the dickwolf graphic as slightly larger than the human graphic (think 120%). I can't figure out how to make this happen, though. Even if I do, I probably won't like the results and revert it.

Apart from these two problems it's completely good to go, which annoys me, and I'm sick of smacking my face against the wall trying to fix them.

Prepare carefully doesn't work with the alien races framework - it turns them into humans.

Dickwolves have no female graphics, because they are forced by the xml to be male so I never made any. It's why when dickwolves spawn they sometimes have female names - they are genned as female and they switched to male. The dickwolf racial trait also has a zero chance of generating, so you should never see it randomly generate except where the dickwolf race xml forces it onto a pawn post-generation. Basically the way the ayylien code works is it takes a generated pawn and then modifies it directly.

If you use prepare carefully to generate a female dickwolf it will have no graphics to draw on and it looks like the trait isn't setting the correct body type either.

Anyway, the moral of the story is that if you want dickwolves in your game that you don't capture from raiders you need to use dev console to spawn them and recruit them. I'd change it if I could but it's C# business and I can't be doing with that. Perhaps one day I'll get started on it, but not for a while.

I need to learn it though because there is so much I can't do without it. Can't make new thoughts, can't make new traits with the depth I want, can't change behaviours...

xml is so limiting.

On the contrary, anyone who has used the orassans mod knows that it does function with prepare carefully, however, in certain menus until you restart the game, the character appears human. this is fine, because a restart fixes everything. however, EDB also randomizes the appearence of the character. this is fine because all dickwolves pretty much look the same. to set up this scenario, i'd need a prepare carefully preset with a dickwolf in it, and to do that, i uncommented a bit of data that you had covered up of the normal alien preset to make it so that dickwolves couldn't appear at the game start, however, there's nothing in the game start preventing females from spawning, so i gotta download a non-fucked version of the mod again when i'm done.

The entire concept of the base should be claustrophobia and dangerous corners that reduce the magnitude of gun advantage. Raiders should have easy access paths using doors to get where they need to be, while natural paths channel players into trap halls and killzones. You can sit outside and make your own path through the walls and into the base, but risk mortar rounds landing on you unless you brought bombs or an expert sapper (not sure if players can even dig through enemy owned walls like sappers can).

Prisioners are a broken system as i see it currently.
Low chance of recruiting them even if you have them in rooms made out of gold.
Literally can't give them jobs, can't build crafting tables in the prison for them to work on.
Even if you recruit them, theres still the relation debuff of being a prisioner iirc.

I think it's weird that you can't force them to work on, say, stonecutting. It's pretty easy to just put a dumping stockpile in their room along with a stonecutter's table (that you already can't use because it's in a prison.)

Okay, I finally got the tranquilizer gun working the way I want it to. It does minor damage to people and adds the tranquilizer debuff. Each stage of the debuff reduces consciousness until it gets to severe, where max consciousness is set to 0.1 similar to malnutrition. Now the question is how do you want this to be balanced? Do you want it to take a few shots to down, or a lot? High rate of fire or low rate of fire? What do you think would make it balanced?

You'd definitely not want to make it so using tranquilizer guns is more viable than using actual guns. Like, you don't want to have a squad of power armor raiders walking up to the base with miniguns and your colonists have a choice between tranquilizer darts and sniper rifles and the tranquilizer darts are the more effective option. I don't know if you can make it work like, you shoot them with the dart and it adds 15% tranquilizer debuff over 30 seconds or something per dart. Regardless, it should be a pretty slow rate of fire, like one every 3 seconds, with range and accuracy similar to a pistol.

If you compare the tranquilizer to a ballistic pistol, you probably don't want the tranquilizer to be a more viable option for downing someone if you ignore wanting to capture them. If I've got an M1911 and a tranquilizer pistol in my house and some lunatic with an axe breaks in wanting to kill me, the pistol would take him down a lot faster. He'd just be dead instead of unconscious.

Sounds reasonable that a single person with a tranq gun wouldn't be able to down a single person without them being able to easily advance into melee range and start beating on them. You should have to have several guys with tranq guns to take someone armed with melee down without risk.

What you said about the balance between lethal and nonlethal solutions makes sense. But it shouldn't be too slow either, 30 seconds is a really long time in rimworld. There's a sweet spot and he'll probably need to test for it.

I think a longer cooldown would be better. If it's only three shots, you could probably take most things down with a single guy who's good at shooting. Nothing that uses melee would stand a chance unless the effects took a while to kick in. It'd basically be more effective than any melee weapon because three hits with that 100% accuracy at touch range and they're down. Not to mention they'd have reduced consciousness even when they weren't completely downed. It might be realistic that it would be easy to shoot someone when you're standing literally next to them but just think about whether you would pick lethal solutions over this when you're actually playing the game.

I actually might not make a tranquilizer gun, because I'm quickly realizing how easily it can be abused. 4 colonists armed with a tranq gun can gang up on a thrumbo and if they all shoot at the same time, it will insta-kill it if they all hit. I have the tranq. the same acc. stats as the minigun and even with 4 colonists it took a long time to down a single tribal using a pila at max range, and even then the tribal ended up dying because two colonists hit him at the same time when he was at 50% tranquilization, and one colonists was downed in the process.

Yeah, after thinking about it I can see how it would be kind of hard to balance out. I mean, if there was a way to make armor and hitpoints somehow be taken into effect so that power armor wearing guys, elephants, thrumbos, cthulhu monsters etc. were a LOT harder to take down, maybe. But I don't really know if there's a way to even do that, and if there was it'd probably be really fucking difficult to do.

Call of Cthulhu has a (sort of) similar thing with the intercranial pressure you give people when you sacrifice someone to Cthulhu and give your colonist a psionic brain. It's been very effective in some situations, but I couldn't say whether it's overpowered or not as I haven't really tried to abuse it yet. A tranq gun would basically be a ranged version of that.

Not if it's a single shot tranquilizer gun. I'd imagine it's hard to reload while being hit with an axe. That aside, you have to ignore what's realistic in favour of balance. Currently in the game if you have a semi-automatic pistol and someone is 20 metres away jogging towards you with a sword, your chances aren't fantastic unless you're a good shot or they're pretty shit. Realistically, you could aim at them and empty your magazine into their torso before they reached you, and they wouldn't stand a chance. That'd just make ranged weapons a bit overpowered.

That actually sounds like a fun thing to do. Well... watch maybe I'm not into doing speedruns myself. Imagine a contest where every week people gets the same seed and starts in the same scenario. They are being dropped in the very same place and then similiar events unfold. Goal is to reach the ship rather than building your own.
If there was a tool to observe this in some way it could end up as interesting stuff. Shit sounds fun to me. Hell whole communities grow on that kind of stuff.

Depends. Recently I've been playing medieval edition castles with a very high colonist limit, so having a few useless colonists isn't a big deal. I even had one (in an old save) with a destroyed spine. With the basic colonist limit of 15 or so, I'll be a lot more picky.

Stone walls will save your ass. No, really. Wooden buildings go up quick, but don't last long under fire and are just begging to get burnt down. Solid walls also provide better cover than sandbags - just give your dudes some room to peek out and fire.

Try to enclose your power structures and farming area with walls as well. Last thing you want is a gang of space dindus destroying your food and power supplies.

There's pretty much no reason to use wood buildings ever. If you start Crashlanded you begin with stonecutting and can have a stone structure set up on the very first day. My first two forts failscaded quickly because of dementia spirals caused by claustrophobia. This one's going pretty well because I traded everything I had very early on for gold, and then dropped a couple gold tiles in every bedroom / common area / the hospital. Going pretty good now, but it surprised me how many of the spacers have useless traits. I try to recruit only from tribes now.

I'm making some more monstergirls. This the harpy and forest fairy.

I'm going to try and experiment with the items they produce. I plan that the Harpy gives eggs and maybe feathers (similar to wool) while the fairy produces seeds (same as an egg) and can be "milked" every 5 days for 1 fairy dust which is a valuable item.

Fallout can be the worst if you're struggling on food, not only because it kills all your plants but also every animal you could potentially hunt. Lost a couple of colonies early on because of it.

Draft a colonist and click their weapon icon to see its range, or just check the weapon's info page for the numerical value. Sniper rifles outrange both types of mechanoid, just be careful of the scythers.

Trigger the mechanoids and kite the scythers away from the centipedes. Either kill the scythers with traps or just take them out straight up. You can outrange centipedes with sniper rifles.
Another thing is after the ship they spawned from reaches 50% health or less, whatever is left will actively pursue you so that's how you lure them into your traps and killboxes.

To my knowledge, quality affects ranged accuracy (but not damage) and melee damage (but not accuracy). The difference can be pretty dramatic - pic related.

Heart attack is how the game attempts to kill animals that are over their life expectancy. AFAIK dogs and cats have an expectancy of 10 so over that age they'll randomly get heart attacks until they finally die.
