Same way as any fighting game. Learn the fundamentals (Same as other FG's really. Spacing, movement, frame data, neutral/punish/footsies, etc) and figure out what character/style works for you and start learning more from there.

Like in any fighting game, the defensive options are under-emphasized in low level play and learning those is super important. Shielding, dodges, etc.

The details are different but the core is the same as anything else. Will warn you that it's technically probably the most demanding FG next to Melee. Movement in Smash is much more complicated and nuanced, and thus a lot of other things are too. I'm not saying this to start shit by any means but it's the case. Expect getting real control over your character to take quite a while.

Something as simple as jumping, there's short hop and fast fall, double jump, sometimes more, the issue of directional facing determining aerial options, aerial lag to consider (for example, a full hop down-air from cloud, done with correct timing has no landing lag, you can act frame 1 on landing, but it's slower because it's a full hop rather than a short hop)

I don't just mean 'discovered tech' I mean the very base mechanics of the game require a big pile of hand skill and muscle memory. A lot more than most FGs.

I started with him in GG and he was my first actual main in FG that I took seriously. His general defensive option is BDC, without it he doesn't have an actual reversal, so you have to grind it out.
But he's fun as fuck. If you CH your opponent - he loses more than half of his face. Also, he gives a new perspective of the neutral and pressure.
I wouldn't say that he's good for beginner, but who cares when you have fun.

I like Birdie because I think his look is unique and I like the focus on just hitting normals, with only a bit of specials.

I also really enjoy just walking forward for some reason. I love when I've gotten them to be afraid of me and I can just walk at them with that intimidating walk, and you get to do a lot of that as Birdie.
