Everyone else just sort of hovers below scattered every which way. The pulling for development came from the fact that Metzen solidified 76 as the main character and then Ana came along and jumped into that train of development. Now you have Reaper, 76 and Ana at the forefront with Chu always saying how important the connection of those 3 are to the story.

Not to mention that Old Soldiers was the first comic Chu wrote. Their arc is the biggest thing in the lore right now. The most detail and relevance.

That's not how Chu does his foreshadowing. Nothing in the picture connects to the hat or even connects to that guy. Also you've got an artist who's done a terrible job with character details. I've seen people theorize they all look Latino and now you want to tell me that guy looks like 76? With this kind of artwork it's impossible to even try and justify that unless Chu actually says something about it like when he explained that Tracer is wearing her trans-locator under her coat.

Ana was a newly released character but they had her backstory written up for a while. Ana was developed when Pharah was solidified. The team was looking for a way to introduce Ana as a playable character but they struggled because in the lore she would be a sniper and it would compete too much with Widowmaker.

So they looked at the alchemist character, which was a support sniper and it just fit perfectly. Ana came together immediately afterwards and into the game she went.

Also Ana's lore dump came on top of 76. 76's lore coexists completely with Ana. And with Sombra, we learned near to nothing about her. She revealed more about other characters and the universe than herself. Which is honestly the point of her character.

I honestly wouldn't mind them adding more characters so long they keep complementing the old ones lore. But again, more lore in general would be best, but that hasn't happened yet.

Chu is screwed no matter what he does. New lore comes out so rarely and the game has such a huge cast as it is. If he decides to prioritize exploring the actual story of Overwatch while keeping Gency as a background thing, he'll get yelled at because it's badly written. If he does decide to dedicate one of the sporadic lore dumps to building up their relationship, he'll get yelled at because there are more important things than romance that need development.

Their scarcity and and time limit are incentives for people to spend money on boxes for chances at either getting their desired item or they'll get the credits to buy it at their inflated prices. If they're going to keep it up where future heroes and maps come without a price then they're going to want to make money some way and this is how. When Activision had one of their recent earnings report they specifically mentioned "player engagement" when it came to the Overwatch events which means time and money invested in them. It's also why we have them so much as it benefits both sides. Blizzard gets their money from box buyers while players get to see new and fun stuff once ever few months. I'm not a fan of it but I know why they do it.

Well in terms of slapping characters together, at least we have Sombra and McCree in the same space. That has plenty of potential.

Right now though, I'm pretty sure Chu still has a lot of focus on the 76/Reaper/Ana arc though. Especially with the cancellation of First Strike, I'm sure Chu's been working on a way to replace that gap in the lore. The way it's set up and the rate at things are going it's safe to assume its pretty one sided. Maps and heroes are free true but the fact there is no guaranteed way to get what you want screws over the player. There are much more player friendly ways to get the money they need, and all of this takes into account that they already more than covered all the production costs for the game.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the money from event boxes has overtaken the revenue from game sales. This is just anecdotal evidence but I know people like iddqd and internethulk spend hundreds of euros on Summer Games crates just so they could get their country's icon. And then I saw someone on the forums saying they spent hundreds to get the Tracer skin they wanted because Tracer was their waifu. The thing is that Overwatch is so widely known that new customers isn't likely a to priority of theirs anymore since it's probably impossible to be even moderately interested in video games and not have heard of it before. You have to remember though, there are times when people read to much into a story to the point of generating false red flags. I'm not saying this is one of those cases but it happens more than you think. Raising pitchforks and proclaiming a character is a self insert when in actuality the character and the writer are hardly alike or quite literally based off another person the writer knows.

When doing story analysis the best way to understand the perspective of the story is to understand the person who wrote it. Which is why going on Chu's twitter is one of the best alternate ways of figuring out where the story might be headed. In this case you can't really do that. Chu is just the lead writer not the sole writer. He's the head of a department of several other people.

I assumed this was the angle they were going to go with their writing, since all the characters were made to be extremely broad, so making specific pairing at least would have been built already into the character. That's typically not the case in a game studio. Being the lead writer is more about rewrites, fact checking, making final decisions, and meeting deadlines.

It also seems this places him in the position to write the comics as well. But saying Chu gets to decide completely where this story is headed isn't true.

But Yes, I am equally worried about this ship becoming canon, because all the story has so far made them out to be enemies and I think it would make no sense if tomorrow voice lines were released of them giving chocolate to each other, the same way I feel about the gency ship.

But the fact Gency seems to be the one becoming reality and in such a hamfisted way is what has got me worried and everyone raising red flags. And yeah, I agree that no one has any real idea about how much he is involved in deciding where the story goes, but he is in charge of deciding which voice lines go into the game and if the gency chocolate lines go in, that means he did okay them.

I am not going to hold him up as infallible just because he is a professional writer. A lot of attitude on the official forums is that he can do whatever he wants, but I feel that we do have a right to complain, since after all we are consuming the story. We can't change how the story goes but we can at least say we don't like it.

Ana is a pretty good waifu for 76. She is loving but knows when to put him in his place when needed. Unlike Mercy and Genji where they both blindly fawn over each other, there is a pretty good relationship dynamic between 76 and Ana. I hope the person in 76s photo is his son. That way 76 and Ana can be failed parents together.

The most basic would the Genji and Hanzo. Hanzo doesn't want to kill his brother, deeply he loves him.

Next is Reaper and 76. They fought together in the war and stayed alongside each other for 20+ years. Described as one of Overwatch's closest bonds, under the hate the still care.

Widowmaker. All she talks about killing and the day she took her first kill, Gerard, as the day she felt alive. And what contradicts that is the fact she still loves Gerard.

Those are 3 blatant, basic ones for you of characters speaking indirectly about how they really feel.

Exactly my point. I would like the ship if I knew what it was based on, or if there was a tiny build up. Them suddenly being lovey-dovey is making me scratch my head. I actually feel kind of understanding (not really) for the shippers, because they were given no evidence that this would ever be a canon thing before this point.

Also they totally did not have to do anything for Valentine's day, so these voice lines feel a bit unnecessary other than telling us their chocolate preference.

The whole thing just leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. I'd honestly prefer if Chu just stopped trying to shove it in our face every chance he got. There seems to be a gap between those cues and these voice lines. Maybe not for you, but I would rather want to know how Mercy feels about making Genji into a Cyborg, or what connection they share over their ideals before having them share valentine chocolates. And I fail to see how this fits into the main story line, with both of them having not yet even become part of it.

Also it being canon does not mean he should prioritize it over plot points that are far more pressing and it certainly does not mean he has to like it, but he is writing it, so I assume he likes it.

Thanks for that. No it's enough. I think I misunderstood the line. I more intepreted along the lines that the characters stories were purposefully biased and that the stories were not fully true, like S76 maybe imagining the conspiracy against the fall of overwatch.

I think Chu means literally that what characters say don't always correspond to how they feel. You have to understand the character's perspective.

Like with Ana, she tends to be literal and speak her mind.
With 76, he tends talk about getting the job done when clearly he's pushing his emotions down as deep as he can so he can focus on what he has to do.

Blizz, why does Mccree have a NOOSE spray?? I think it's extremely offensive, it promotes and normalizes the idea of suicide and hate. We should be working to foster a healthier community.
