Last bit of comfy progress!
As promised, I started working on the claw. Now you can activate it when the ship is not moving. I forgot to make it so you can't go back to sailing if the claw's active but I fixed it right after recording the webm.

The plan is to make the claw go underwater, and if you're in the right spot (which will be marked by particles, lights all that shit), the claw will go further down and the minigame will begin. Otherwise it will stop for a moment then quickly come back up.

There's no Katamari style games for PC that are fun to play, you have to emulate. Besides, I'm going to differentiate the actual gameplay goals and overall mechanics. Making a small thing a big thing has been a core staple of fun arcade games since fuckin Fishy on newgrounds. But yeah I don't care if I'm just making a Katamari clone it'll be fun.

Weapons can be changed easily by the way.
Movesets are provided via animation blueprints.
Weapon range is dynamic and according to the actual thing in the enemies hand.

Anon, I feel the art direction is scattered everywhere in that screenshot, the item images are pixel art, the text describing what you got is smooth and round, the black and white symbol that I assume is money is very low quality and less pixels than the other images, the Year XXX text is in yet another font and the game is in 3d

>>
>>166328040
Centimeters. Everything is scaled that way, though I should go back and change things to meters anyway.

>>166328054
Correct, it's animation driven, although I've set the animator involved to use physics and all objects there are using continuous dynamic detection. The pins are not kinematic, but the sweep is.
>>
>>166327856
>unity
>>
>>166327856
Anime bowling?
>>
>>166328626
>Centimeters.
Assuming you haven't messed with your shadow settings, your sweep is roughly a hundred meters wide. Your shit is too big, which is why the physics are freaking out.
>>
>>166327457
Got any weapons other than clubs and swords? Those two are very similar, so I'm wondering how well it would look with a dagger or floret.
>>
>>166328957
A real life hundred-meter-wide sweep could knock some pins over.
>>
>>166328626
move the cuboid using this https://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/Rigidbody.MovePosition.html

you can see by the way the pins roll on the floor when they fall over that the collider works as intended. if you move the cuboid as i suggested, i believe it should work. i don't think that it's a problem with scale, as some other anon pointed out. geometry doesn't stop working because the numbers are big but there's a slight chance that i'm wrong.
>>
>>166329296
Pity that isn't real life. It's a simulation with a poorly coded physics engine.

Testing some '''''''''''''''mechanics'''''''''''''' for my 100% original idea

You guys remember those flash games like the kitten canon one where you fire the kitten out of the canon and it hits trampolines and explosives and shit and the further you get the higher your score? My idea is to make something similar in 3d with a bunch of powerups and score multipliers.

Th-thanks. Satisfying challenge is my #1 priority for it since it's essentially going to be a glorified flash game. The further the distance the harder it's going to become; you gain momentum each bounce and the obstacles become sparser, and stuff like being rewarded for strategic use of powerups, having multiple scoring criteria etc.

Unity question here.

Does anyone know of a way to generate a 2D collider on a group of game objects in a grid, similar to the way you can generate a single collider over a mesh using marching squares?

I want to have some pretty basic destructible terrain, similar to broforce and I'd really prefer not to have to use meshes and 3d colliders, particularly since if I use sprites I can build the levels in tiled instead of having to make my own level editor.

You want to be useful or not? Or are you just trying to shitpost bait like usual with your artists looking for bullshit?
>>

90% of artistis offering art here will end in bait and shitposting, you can spot them easily as soon as the post along "show your game first" or when they dodge questions like >>166337440

>>
>>166338650

>>166338650
Artists don't need programmers. Gamedev tools have evolved to the point where a dedicated programmer is an optional requirement in a team.

People who say they're artists looking for a project are just salty programmers.
>>
>>166338883
an artist that's actually looking for a project and is worth their salt wouldn't dodge questions, especially not in a sarcastic manner like >>166337440 since this way they out themselves as a cunt that's difficult to work with
>>
>>166337038
Not interested but good luck.
>>
>>166338904
Truth is, we are either dealing with a really salty programmer that got fucked by an artist, a really salty artist that got fucked by a programmer, or a really autistic kid that thinks repeating the same joke over and over makes it funnier.
>>
>>166337689
>What's the filter then?
>no reply
Exactly. Shitposting """memes""" like that you can't filter. It can be approached from so many directions that eventually you just have to suspect any post mentioning artists and programmers in the same post. This is the wonderful gift shitposters give agdg.
>>
>tfw too famous to post art

I think artists don't like posting their work here because once we do, we'll be beholden to whatever we say; if we like the project we can maybe continue, but if we agree to help and hate it midway it's harder to go back on your word when people know you.

Basically we're just super flaky and want to quit whenever the fuck we want.
>>
>>166339112
Or they could be a different person who decided to come and hijack a discussion to fuck with people in the thread while they wait for their shit to compile.

>>
>>166339540
That's because those are two different things. 'Functional' could be anything. Something as simple as a timer that count to 10. That's 'functional'. So by comparing 'amazing' art to 'functional' code, you're essentially comparing a stick figure done in ten seconds to something that was actually worked on by someone.

One artist did post the agdgtan model for free and nobody did a witch-hunt on him.
Posting a 2D girl for the comfy jam is safe and will probably give you plenty of fanarts.

Let's be serious. You're not doing it and you keep on posting the same question because you have no plan to do anything in the first place.

Regardless of their meme or not.

How is getting fan art of a single picture (asset) someone posted relevant?

And if I want to work with someone by making specific assets for an idea, why should I post a random anime girl exactly? That no one is going to use anyway because it doesn't fit their other assets.

Those are literally what drawthreads are for.

>>166341341
Its actually representing a program, the "npc says" part is what gets printed on the screen, and the "response options" are what to do depending on what the user types. So entering "0" will act as if the player made the first dialogue choice, or it can be configured for the player to type the input to match the response option (typing NEXT instead of boring numerical options), or directing what the player inputs into a stored value, or just automatically continue to the next dialogue node without waiting for a response. It has some handy reflection for calling functions. The only problem is now all the logic for programs is in these assets that are only accessible through Unity, not in any random IDE so its not portable.
>>
I'm making a 2.5d platformer where you play as a slime that has dropped off a far larger slime and needs to get home. As you go through levels you collect other slimes and slowly grow in size. You can liquify yourself to fit through grates, fill up with hot air to float temporarily, or even absorb an enemy in your mouth as kind of 'crowd control' measure where they will eventually break free and rejoin the fight. I haven't started on any actual assets yet, just using primitives in Unity.

Does this sound worth continuing to anyone else? Just curious.

it's as easy as looking up a solution to what you are trying to do via google or the documentation.

just do it enough until you get the hang of it and only need to search very abstract problems.

The thing that's great about programming is anyone can learn it, and there are so many free sources to learn it. That being said, I was told I should learn to program things that aren't games, and understand it/work with it for a while before I try to make a game.

So, like, do I do that or learn how to use Unity from their tutorials and just learn as I go on my project?

chess pieces don't have HP and that game works out pretty well.
>>
>>166349248
Is your game realtime? The method I use wouldn't apply at all then. I just store info in a 2d grid.

Is your game physics based?
Is your game 3d?
Do you want the noodles to flop around, or to follow a set path?
All these change the implementation details.

There is another game with the mechanics you want. Search for "Snake Game Tutorial" + Your Language / Engine

>>
>>166349490
>>166349985
2D realtime, the game needs to know when a noodle has wrapped around an object pretty much. but also needs to spawn in many noodles like an actual bowl of noodles would work, slightly random, maybe some slight physics eventually of noodles swirling in broth

That's renaissance era shit, and fine I'm specifically talking about melee combat.

You don't just flail your sword around like a retard, that wears you out, and puts your allies at risk if you're fighting in a group. Just like with any sort of hand to hand combat there's a lot of footwork and using your entire body to strike out.

Also those aren't broadswords.
>>
>>166356403
Everything is still weight-painted (although I didn't bother to weight paint anything to the leg bones), but in the engine (Unity), the cloth system overrides the skinning (skinning means making the mesh follow the animation bones) on parts that I tell it to.

The cloth system has its own weight-painting tool to tell the engine which vertices will be driven by the cloth physics. So the bottom part of the cloak has full cloth weight, and that weight value slowly lowers on the vertices higher up, until the parts of the cloak on the shoulder, neck, and arms, which has no cloth weight.

Slur can usually be attributed to shitty mic quality. Youtubers who do get complaints about slurred speech usually blame it on the mic and not their actual voice since they don't have a slur/speech impediment in real life.

These two just sound like they're so totally into their work and don't get much outside input that they listen to or consider, so they tend to sound patronizing. Second guy sounds like he's got a slight southern accent.

worth mentioning that all the books claiming to teach this stuff are extrapolated from a handful of old drawings. i doubt any of them are even slightly historically accurate.
long swords were military weapons that are quite obviously impractical without the context of large scale battles. people one on one fencing with them (and claim of them being used for "self-defense") is completely retarded.
historical detective: you can immediately remove all the wide moves since that would rarely if ever make sense in battle context and you can remove thrusts too since it's clearly not a stabbing weapon.
all your really left is up and down swings.... anything circular is you wildly trying to get the engulfing enemy away from you because all of your comrades are dead.

all this talk about realistic sword fighting reminded me about a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYi3xYoT8rs

He actually acknowledges that it's hard to believe that 90% of all sword users in the middle ages had access to the manuals that HEMA practitioners now are using. It's more likely that a lot of them developed their own techniques based on a more simple style of parry-response system.
>>
>>166358345

really slows down the pacing imo though. feels like borderlands in that regards where I'm sitting at the menu deciding which upgrade to go with.

I feel like each of these upgrades could have been turned into a completely new weapon, and then we'd have even more weapons to play with.

There's already too much quiet time between combat areas, I wish the combat areas were either closer to each other or more numerous. The combat itself is so good I wouldn't even mind just playing a horde mode with monsters constantly getting thrown at me in arena stages. Didn't care for the exploration much other than to restock ammo/health/armor. In fact they could have done the upgrades better by just giving you an exact upgrade you find in a secret area. No praetor tokens and argent ball shit, just give a health upgrade on this stage when you find the secret, or a weapon-swap speed upgrade in another secret area in another stage, etc., same for the weapon upgrades. Keep players out of the menus. fucking map doesn't even come onscreen, not even a minimap, just a compass, you gotta enter the menu for that, it sucked.
>>
>>166358479
when I said all sword users, that means including the common soldier. yes, knights would be trained properly. I guess I was going off-topic.
>>
So I am gonna have this menu that dynamically presents three choices to the player, so the choices have to be random.

I am wondering if I should like, pre make a widgit with buttons in it, or do some fancy bullshit to make it so on widgit construction it also makes the buttons. I don't really see the benefit for the later outside of making me feel better about myself and maybe saving some time.

I don't think common soldiers would have even used swords much. All of the heavy work was done with spears and stuff that was easier to use and more effective in formation.

I didn't say it wasn't a programming language. It's just that "programming language" isn't a meaningful label for it, what's meaningful is results. And the results of using gml are that you will never understand basic programming fundamentals, you will never implement any sort of common paradigms unless explicitly trying to in weird ways, you'll never understand memory usage or, really, anything about programming at all by using it. Because it's a toy.

I've been thinking real hard for a moment of agame, but i can't eally do anything in coding.
here are the specs:
>Fake 3D (2D)
>Third person point of view
>Multiplayer (up to a 8 player team)
>Mostly about chasing and hunting monsters in a steampunk universe (No magic)
>Characters skills are determined by the weapon they are carying (meaning a tank-healer can have a shotgun and a medikit; and a full healer will have a morphine gun/sedative gun + bigger medikit)
>8 different types of characters (therefore weapons and tools are divided within the 8 said ''types''): Brawler, Tracker, Trapper, Healer, Tank, Small shooters, Med shooters and heavy shooters
>Game is hardcore, monsters hit like trucks and to kill the ''main-quest'' monster your team will need a real strong planned strat
>Dying twice within the quest means you're out, quest is finished for you and the team has one less player. If all the team die, you lose some of your money
>possibility to work within a mine, a farm, a forest and exploring the city in order to make money, buy components (sold by players?) and make your first weapons.
>possibility to capture the quest monster in order to get some additionnal loot

>Basically Monster Hunter on PC with a steampunk universe and without the 3D. Game is on open map instead of several small areas.

because the purpose of programming is not to learn 1 language like a literal 1 trick monkey, the purpose of being a programmer is to learn MULTIPLE languages so you can be versatile in your trade.

When you actually get out of freshman year highschool you might learn why its not good to be a 1 trick fag. Many games use GML, learning it alongside other languages is a good idea. When you learn multiple languages, you will find out that you can program in any language because they all follow the same exact rules unless you are using some outdated special snowflake meme bullshit language.

>Let's learn art
>Know basic modeling, but fuck me if I can't draw or model well, even any form of visual art for that matter
>Let's storyboard
>Anyone can write a story, but mine just have shit sentence structure, dialogue sounds inorganic as fuck, and can never write when I want to, only when I'm doing other things will it flow through me
>Let's brainstorm concepts for good games
>See above
Like there's usually one thing people are comfortable with they can do. My quality, quite literally, is coming up with fun quirky ideas that I can shove into something to improve or shell out a foundation for, while I am 3/10 in everything else. I am the definition of ideas guy. It's so discouraging.
But you know, they say "try, try again." So I suppose that's all I'm going to have to do. Just keep going until I get something that looks or feels right. Still, I wish these "million dollar ideas" could be vivid enough for my ADHD mind to sit down, write/draw them out, and actually use them well.

What should people use then? Most people here cant into 3D and Unity is terrible for 2D. Only options are Monogame and Godot and both are as, or even more meme engines than GM:S. Of course there's Construct 2 but that's like literally worst.

In college you get what is called core courses and elective courses. C++ is a core course, meaning its mandatory. Gm/uniti are electives, meaning they are optional courses. If you have a comp science degree you will AUTOMATICALLY be considered for jobs involving C++ because that is a core fucking requirement.

>assumes minimalism is easy

Shitposting aside, minimalism (in regards to games) thrives on simplifying the detail and reducing complex colours and shapes to symbolic representations that are instantly recognisable. Few lines, blocks of colour with clear borders, flat shading, exaggerated animation (but not overly nuanced) Use of symbols instead of actual representations of things.

The best way to understand it is to take a realistic picture of something then try to replicate it in as few lines as possible. For an additional challenge try doing the same with just blocks of a 3 colour palette. Through that you can turn anything into something suitable.

doesn't matter, at the end of the day minecraft is vastly different from infiniminer, therefore not stealing.

Conceptual problem here. Perhaps someone can chime in.

My space strategy game has stars and factions. Factions can own stars.

So, the question is, which one of these I should use:
>Each faction has a list of "owned_stars" which contains the references to owned "star" objects.
>Each star has a variable "owned_by", which contains a reference to a "faction" object which owns it

If you are not versed in space strategy - replace stars with hexes or cities.

Anyways, which approach should I choose.

Can have either or both, depends on how you're passing around the information between them. Pick one, go with it and modify once it doesn't suit your needs.

Depends entirely on what the purpose of owning a star are
chances are there will be reasons for both the faction to know which stars it owns and for the star to know which faction owns it

That would probably use a different moveset and as a result a different animation blueprint, meaning that most animations and stances would look different.
Also needs different animations of course.
These are only for relatively heavy, two-handed weapons.

>>166354636
The player animations are just there so I have something to work with and organize the code structure (i.e. which events fire when, notifying the controller, how does the animation graph look like, etc).
They'll be updated once I work over the attack mechanics. Which is what I'll do after I finish the enemy AI, possibly including in-fighting.

After that I want to have different swings for the weak attack and a different swing for the heavy attack (which doesn't exist at the moment). Think: Something between Thief and Dark Messiah.

I don't want it to be as slow and heavy as Thief but neither do I want light attacks be as fast and weak as in DM.

I've asked this before here too, but never got an answer, still stuck on it

no idea why Resources.LoadAll<mytype>("path") has never worked for me

you can try Xamarin Studio
its like VS but more lightweight and better
>>
Do you make design documents or do you just have everything in your head or do you just go with flow and do whatever comes to mind?

Picking an empty gun will require you to load it yourself or it won't fire
>>
>>166370214
i dont think you can make a decent game without any kind of planning/design
>>
>>166370214
I prototype to get something playable witin the first 2 or 3 days of dev, then I use to do lists.
GDDs are useless and a waste of time for 1MAs.

Don't know if it works with unity though.

I'm amazed that you haven't gotten bored with animating after all this time. After i finished movement animations for my MC i was fucking done, it was so boring i had to take a long break

I love animating man, and even better, I get paid well for it.
>>
>>166370214
I have a notebook I occasionally scribble down ideas and diagrams, and a text file on dropbox to add things to when I'm out and about. I think in general for 1MA if you need a design doc your scope is too big.

>This is why you never ever ever !!!EVER!!! do coop projects on agdg EVER
Monolith and Gunmetal are both coop projects composed of people from /agdg/
>>

That AK animation bothers me, wouldn't you hold the weapon against your shoulder in your left hand and pull the bolt with the right hand?
>>
>>166370672
Both destined to fail eventually.
>>
>>166370753
Monolith passed greenlight already

Several different ways to charge AK's, under the receiver being one way. That way is also one, as well as rotating the gun and charging over the receiver.

IRL my go to way is under the receiver. But for variety the reload does what you just said.

Name one AGDG project that in your opinion isn't destined to fail
>>
>>166370769
Almost any game passes greenlight, there have been several greenlit projects in from agdg alone all of which failed to sell

>>
>>166370835
this

passing greenlight doesn't mean shit if your game is still too shitty to sell
>>
>>166370835
>>166370890

My dream is to one day get greenlit. Actually fucking selling anything is so far beyond my wildest dreams.

that guy left a long time ago. try again

I just go with the flow, but hell I think everything around me that can be written into includes some design work at this point.

congratulations dipshit
you made progress
>>

When it comes to design decisions I apparantly have a photographic memory so I don't bother writing anything anymore.
>>
I don't get unity licenses. Can I just buy a license for one month when my game is finished to get rid of the splash screen forever?

the cost is still about 2500 usd
