I remember the table and the nurses gathering round, I remember the little respirator full of anesthetic, I remember being to told to count down from ten, I don't remember how far I got, then I remember waking up.

The actual surgery is honestly the least of it. The recovery is actually something, but wasn't too bad. A lot of time not doing anything strenuous to protect the stitches, and taking hydrocodone for the pain.

I nearly lost my right eye when I was 9. If I hadn't closed it in time, it would've been pierced by a tree branch. Luckily, my dumbass child self had decent reflexes.

Had to wear an eye patch forever, and had to have my cornea of my eye messed with for weeks.

Eh, it was better than leaving it. It needed to be done because one of my ribs had been broken when I was younger, but it healed a bit shit and was basically in the way. It made breathing and a lot of activity hurt, so they needed to basically cut it off and get in the right way.

Modern painkillers are pretty crazy, so the recovery period wasn't all that bad. A lot of vidya and napping mostly. If anything the painkillers are annoyingly strong. I didn't like being so out of it all the time.

I'm OK with that one, despite knowing my proportions and some bits are awful, but that was also the first attempt at drawing in a long time, and I had decent references to try.

I'm working on locking down the characters from KS in my mind so I can draw them and contribute some original content to this general, but, again, harsh on myself, because I don't want to just mime the original artstyle 100% like I find myself doing at times. I hate doing that, and it doesn't get me anywhere closer to being my own artist, my own self. Just makes me jealous of everyone who has their own style and is so damn good at it.

When I first got into art, it helped for me to visualize each finger as a separate entity to the palm, and even each joint of the finger as it's own entity as well. You've got three sections to each finger (besides thumb) so think of knuckles almost as mini knee joints, they're rarely completely straight, they usually have SOME type of bend to them.

Break hands up into three categories: the fingers which move independently and change to various shapes, the palm which is usually always a pentagon shape, and the thumb which is pretty easy.

Once you get the complex shapes of hands down, you can nail them in other/simpler art styles (like anime girls and stuff like that) much easier. Like, remember that even if they're straight, fingers aren't just flat lines, they get slightly thicker in the middle and tend to be thinner on top. Try taking pics of your hand in various positions and sketching them out.

Either way, you're off to a good start, you're already doing better than most of the nerds on Deviantart. I already notice you paid attention to the contrast in size on the shoulder on the arm that's behind her head, you show decent attention to detail, so I'm willing to bet you'll improve fairly quickly.

Just remember that your harshest critic will always be yourself, and that's okay, so long as you don't discourage yourself because of it. It pushes you to improve. Drawing is one of those things that EVERYONE starts out being complete and utter trash at, and you're already pass the utter trash stage, so just don't stress, man. You got this.

Last few things, never be afraid to erase and redo. Nothing you draw will ever be perfect, every piece of art requires revisions, no matter how good you are. Perfectionists make the best and the worst artists. And always encourage criticism. You can't improve unless someone tells you WHAT you need to improve on.

Sorry for the giant post. Hope I helped in SOME way and I didn't just type up a confusing mess.

This is exactly right. I've use the Ugee 1910b display tablet, and while it's still in the couple hundred dollar range, it's cheaper than pretty much any Wacom product and works just as well. If you decide that you're really serious about drawing stuff, especially for some income, I'd totally recommend saving up for something like that.

Oh yeah, that's totally fine, there's nothing wrong with that at all. The only reason the one I've got is pricey is cuz it's a display tablet. For the longest time I used one like yours, but finally I made the switch to a display one. Nothing wrong with using a non-display tablet though, it's really up to preference, mostly.

I've just been self-taught my whole life, so the majority of the stuff I'd create was on paper since it always felt more natural to me. So when I switched to a non-display tablet, it threw me off for a while, it was jarring going from seeing what I was drawing as I was drawing it to drawing on something and seeing it appear somewhere else. Obviously I got used to it, but when I was able to switch to a display one, it recaptured that feeling of drawing on paper again.

Writing is always a good skill to have, though. My imagination has faded a bit in my 20s, but I can draw ok and write dialogue between characters really well. Coming up with a story is my issue. I've been playing a lot of VNs lately, and KS really got me. I needed something to kick me out of my hole I've dug myself.

And I definitely intend to work at it. I want to be able to wow people when they request something of me.

A touch pad, as in, like a laptop touch pad? That's not bad for that. Seriously. I would kill myself trying to do that haha. Just using my mouse is hell to me. I definitely agree on the digital thing, it looks cleaner, and for the artist, you can edit things so much easier and quicker. Coloring would be so simple.

And best girl, from KS? I've only played Shizune and Lilly's routes so far, working through Hanako's. I feel like playing Lilly's first set the bar too high because she's just amazing. So as of right now, Lilly is best girl to me. Unless Emi or Rin can steal that title.

Dialogue was my hard point haha it was really forced, though writing Lilly has helped me with formaility and putting myself in Hisao and the other character's shoes helped so much :) I can write pretty decent, and am really honored that so many people read my stuff haha
