First chapter looks kinda retarded in the retrospective. Kaede took the steel ball, which was too heavy for her according to her own words, put it into backpack and was walking around with it for 2 days without any purpose. Then Rantaro said that he has a plan to stop the mastermind and he doesn't want anyone to interfere, and even Hoshi, who wanted to die, agreed with him. Only after that Shuichi showed Kaede the vent and she come up with the idea of the trap, completely ignoring Rantaro's words and actions. That doesn't make any sense.

One by one, her trembling fingers let go of the hilt, and with a soft thud, the knife falls onto the carpet. She throws herself on me and buries her face right where the knife should have gone, Clutching at the fabric of my clothes. Her whole body shakes feverishly and I scoop her body into my arms and tell her that everything will be okay, just like usual. Her silent sobbing turns to wailing that echoes out into the dimly lit corridors beyond the door.

She would finally be cured of despair. Because the only thing she can't analyze is love

In the beginning of the prologue, the students seem to know who Monukuma is, but not the Monokumarz. They also think and have memories that they've been kidnapped. Rantarou, who we later learn has gone through a killing game twice already, knows more of what's going on, but thinks that the ones running this one are "copycats".

Here's the theory; 4 through 52 were reality shows, with voluntary participants. These games, however, did not feature the Monokumarz, just Monokuma. Moreover, they were overall much less "fantastic" than V3 was; they did try hard to find people who were talented, but they weren't what would qualify as SHSL in the 1/2/3 universe. However, with v3, they wanted to "reboot the franchise" (v3 would be a pun for 53, their current installment, so that's also good); in particular, they gained access to the ability to actually inject people with talent and manipulate memories. They came to Rantarou, a celebrity they had used in the past, with the proposition of the reboot; he was fully on-board with it (he wouldn't actually be brainwashed, other than to forget the first part of the prologue), and left his video to himself telling himself that this would actually be an interesting game for once, the "one you've been waiting for". However, they didn't actually have the consent of the non-Rantarou players to engage in brainwashing; they had auditioned for the normal variant, that did not feature brainwashing. To avoid any trouble, they kidnapped them. They also debuted the Monokumarz. Rantarou didn't know of either the kidnapping plan or the Monokumarz, so he thinks that a copycat organization is behind it at the beginning.

There didn't really seem to be much romantic interest from either side. Kaede also insists there's nothing going on between them to other characters.
