Continuing, both drones went down easy and one of my two Spartans blows an unfortunate ADVENT the fuck up, while the other flanks and shotguns his buddy from thirty yards. I've decided I'm going to try and abduct that Officer once I've killed him, since I still need to research those. He's not going down easy though. The firefight is going my way, and hopefully this will be the only resistance since this is right in front of the building with the evac point.
>>
>>166224604
On the majority of missions they're by default infinite. Theres maybe a few exceptions where it fits for the mission type for there to not be an infinite number of reinforcements.
As for steadily increasing frequency of appearance throughout the mission? It would not seem theres a way to do so, but the frequency of them overall can be increased to any amount you want by changing the bucket modifier. While they'll appear more frequently than the default setting it would still be at an unpredictable turn due to the nature of the ALERT MODIFIER roll.

I was wrong. Very, very wrong. On the enemy's next turn two new pods popped up, bringing two sectoids and another squad of ADVENT into the mix. The ADVENT's Gunners proved extremely accurate, punching a hole in my drone-nigger's chest and causing one of my rookies to panic. My shotgunner Spartan is also wounded badly. The entrance to the building I need to reach the top of is now very heavily guarded.

>>166225270
So you can't make them get more frequent but can make them frequent and unpredictable enough from the get go to still be a threat? Alongside the fact that you said the composition of the pod ramps up and can be modified to be more of a pressure than it is now, I think this is a great system.
>>
what's the point of sending an 8 man death squad to Gatecrash ADVENT when the next 10 missions you are just stealthing around with a high mobility rookie?

Yeah I have laser too, I can see that now, but need elirium crystals for it, which I don't have, for magnetic, I just needed alien alloys and like 50 supplies

This is what happened, I haven't gotten a single elirium core, or have any debris to clear that would give me elirium

I'm not gonna restart, i'll just try to hold out and pray that I can hold out for 10 more days with tier 1

The fight is not going my way. We're pinned down and now there are zombies on the field. My Spartans are cleaning up the refuse and my Marines score several kills, but their numbers are just too much to deal with. We're getting whittled down slowly as one of my men continues to bleed out without anyone able to reach him.

I think this next turn will decide if the VIP makes it out alive, or if he dies with my brave, retarded, suicidal men.

Anyone notice on the LW2 maps that while they're really big all the enemies are always centered in a straight line from your spawn to the objective?

Now, I get on those rescue missions/assasinate whatever that they'd be chilling around their target but on extract VIP's generally every node is within sight/sound. Is the only viable way to do these to bring technicals in to fire rockets across the map randomly so you dont run out of time?

Am I the only one that thinks that flamethrowers are fucking useless
The rocket launcher is great, but you only get 1 per mission, I really feel like the technical class is the worst
Or am I just missing something with the flamethrower?
It doesn't destroy cover, it doesn't attack through cover sometimes, the range is shit, I feel like they're always just outside of range

Tho it's also a useful pistol. Most of the time...
>>
>>166227361
Nope, but keeping them down there ensures you don't have to go through this shit in the future(or at least as much)

You'll have to prioritize some havens to be on supply duty, and those should have soldiers attached for quite a bit. The ones that don't focus on supplies don't need them, meaning you can stick a scientist there for mad intel.
>>
how broken are the MW weapons in LW2?

As far as I can tell yes to that, but advent strength also determines the amount of (base) enemies on a mission and their tiers; at 2 you'll see more vipers/sectoids etc.
So far I'm having a lot of fun but also a lot of frustration from those dumb speedrun objectives people keep posting about.

so what about Long War 2 would you change?
>for me:

I haven't felt rushed to the objective like many others have, but maybe a rework of timers? Maybe eliminating them entirely but having reinforcements continually drop in ala Avenger defense after concealment breaks? I dunno.

That and I'd certainly change the dodge mechanic to work in a better way or remove it entirely.

Also I haven't encountered many bugs/crashes but ironing those out can't hurt.

It actually already does this. What needs to be changed is the frequency and composition of the pods so it still has that sense of urgency. According to that one Anon who went digging in the .ini you can do so, now its a question of who's going to actually do it and test it.
>>

I need some help commanders, and google isn't being very helpful. My mods just suddenly stopped working. Camera rotation mod doesn't work, I don't see enemies HP, no yellow flank icons with Gotcha, nothing.

I only have the "essential mods" and nothing that changes gameplay or graphics or extra buttons, not even Overwatch All. Perfect Information still works partially and shows the shot breakdown bar, but it doesn't show the percentages for shots or anything else it's supposed to do.

I can't even get mods starting on new games and they are all enabled and I've tried various launcher tricks and turning them on/off repeteadly.

The only clue I have is that they stopped working around the time I was messing around with the ingame graphic options, but it was no help changing those back either. Not to mention it makes no goddamn sense.

If anyone could advice on this I'd appriciate it a lot.

are SPARKs good now?

"SPARKs in the 1.1 patch should also be getting 5 ablative armor at the start of every mission (I think it's in 1.1, if you're not seeing that then it's in 1.1), so they'll be considerably tankier requiring >5 damage taken each mission to even be wounded. There might also be other minor tweaks, we've been working on them a bit."

Well that's XCOM. I'm not too sure whether I should congratulate the guy on having the will to survive or shoot him before his grudge for leaving him to die has him crash the Avenger

Yeah, it does seem fishy, though I have no personal experience with it.
>>
>>166234543
Long War actually has the difficulty curve the right way around, so wait until endgame to decide that stuff.
>>
>>166234613
You won't have enough crit without flanking anyway, it's just an extremely tiny poke to deny overwatch or finish off targets.
>>
>>166231708
Something to make you not just sit on your ass and OW every turn. An increasingly more difficult enemy force the longer you stay would do that perfectly.
>>
>>166234268
Walk fire is mildly useful whenever a low health dude needs killing albeit not as reliably as combat protocol, etc. Haven't tried an overwatch build but it doesn't strike me as compatible with most of how the game is supposed to be playing. Close and personal doesn't make much sense to me on a ranger

Also I realized had a mod that edits the physics of the corpses, going to see if disabling that will help the problem.

Playing Xcom EW vanilla for the first time in a while, could snipers always squadsight overwatch with their pistol? I though they could only use their rifle in squadsight. It's wierd though because I can hit someone with the pistol from across the map on overwatch, but I can't take a regular shot with squadsight pistol.
>>
Don't try to have your rebels do anything if enemy strength is above five.

I just had back to back asset defense missions and since I ignored them like six rebels got killed.

Not that big of a deal since I'm kind of done with the region till adven find somewhere else to be.
>>
>>166236081
Admittedly I haven't played vanilla in years, but it shouldn't be possible. Pistols only have 30 range, the reason snipers work at squadsight isn't just the perk but also the fact that they have high base range..

Bad gameplay design in a nutshell

This entire thing could be done more intuitively and in a less clunky fashion. If the rule of thumb is 'never infiltrate below 100%, and don't bother above unless you have time to waste' AND you can just skip missions whenever you feel like, the entire feature is a complete game design failure.

Long War 2 has shown me that lumpy has no fucking clue what he's doing and only got lucky with the first Long War.

I've probably just gotten lucky, but the mission timing seems really fair to me so far (month 2) on Veteran.

I've usually finished with turns to spare (last mission had 6/13 turns left on the clock when I was done) but the reinforcements keep the pressure up anyway. I assume that the timer is there just to keep you moving while in concealment, inching forward would be boring as hell but really efficient without the time limit. The reinforcements act as a "true concealment"-type timer.

Of course now I've jinxed myself and I'm sure the next mission will fuck me up horribly

Nope, if you never played any XCOM-style games before, it will kick your teeth in. Play Vanilla first then forget about the strategic layer when you go into LW2.
>>
>>166229971
Agreed, timers are boring, but probably necessary, so I would like something like this:

Add more dynamic events instead of just a timer, like some types of missions have only reinforcements but at a faster rate; some could have artillery or an orbital strike called at your position after you do something; rescues could be a race before advent prisoner transfer unit reaches the cells, or even one extra surprise prisoner popped somewhere in the map and you might want to check it out.

Also link the above with hacking or maybe a capture/hold type of deal, making it possible to make your job easier (or harder) if you hack/hold certain Points of Interest around the map.

The rest would be quality of life more than anything

-Strip all unequipped weapons button
-Create squad from current assigned soldiers
-An indicator when a mission reaches Extremely Light/Vulnerable

Haven't really played that much, so this is what I gathered so far.
>>
>>166245826
Base game first hands down

Get used to the mechanics and the likes first by completing a campaign and then hit up Long War 2. Going into Long War 2 without any knowledge of how the game works will be a terrible experience
>>
So with LW2 do I have to call evac on most missions? Or do I get any benefit from staying and killing ayys
>>
What exactly is the function of squads

Like why create them if you can build a mission squad from different squads anyways?
>>
>>166246264
XP from kills is a lot smaller, and XP from mission success is a lot bigger. No XP gain from reinforcement kills.

Throw down the flare pretty much the moment you bust concealment, especially if that mission was badly infiltrated.
>>
>>166246398
Named and organized squads will probably be much more of a thing in the mid/late game where you have enough leveled up people to make dedicated squads
>>
>>166246264
>Or do I get any benefit from staying and killing ayys
No, and the reinforcements will never stop coming.
Call for evac ASAP once you break concealment / have a decent evac zone. Don't wait until you complete the objective. I made that mistake once, it sucked
>>
>>166246398
Officers have a Leadership skill that affects the whole squad and gets better as people play under that officer.
>>
>>166246398
I think leaders give soldiers bonuses which increase with consecutive missions. In theory using the same squads over time should max out those bonuses I guess?

I dunno, there's too much variance in missions for me to establish fixed squads so I'm effectively just grabbing a new squad each time, we'll see if that bites me later
>>
>>166246398

I'm tentative to try LW2.

I enjoy Xcom 2, but my biggest complaint is that combat is focused around killing things immediately. In EW battles felt more drawn out and dynamic, there were standoffs and flanking maneuvers and a continued sense of tension.
But in 2, if I don't kill or disable an entire pod the same turn it's activated, I'm losing a squad member, maybe 2. In most missions, if I see an enemy attack at all I've done something wrong, and that's incredibly less fun/dynamic to me. I can't pin down why this is, if the enemy can move too far, if their hit/crit rate is too high, or if hunker down is as meaningless as it feels most days, but the two games feel like the difference in playing Chess and playing TicTacToe.
Based on the thread, what I'm hearing from LW2 is that it only makes the worst parts about Xcom 2 worse, when all I'm really craving is Long War 1 with updated graphics and enemies.

Are there any supplemental mods I can utilize to make the play more to my style? As strange as it sounds I WANT to be able to let the enemy attack me once in a while, I just want to replace the promise of death with a consistent threat.
/blog I guess

Spot on anon. There is a mod that comes with tattoos meant to be specifically used as body tattoos, though some of the vanilla tattoos work as well.
>>
>>166263916
The problem with LW2 is it makes new problems when trying fix X2's problems. Combat is no longer centered around alpha striking, you of course want to get a good ambush off but actually wiping the pod in a trap is not going to happen anymore. The changes to hit mechanics, cover values, and AI have also made firefights thoughtful and drawn out WHEN I have them.
The problem with LW2 is the size of the maps, the amount of additional enemies, infinite reinforcements and the added difficulty of the above changed mechanics would all fit just fine if not for the the timer being still present and unchanged. With the timer still present and unmodified you'll find on a large portion of missions you're staying in concealment as long as possible and completely avoiding engagements in order to do the objective in a timely manner. Fighting usually only occurs when you need to get a pod out of your way, or if you want to but its really just wasting time.
My personal solution to this, since I don't actually mind timers if they're reasonable, was increasing the timers across the board to 12. The missions that had a 12 turn timer were the ones I were actually enjoying because it was enough time to change up strategy and get caught up in those extended firefights while still getting the objective done in time. Of course thats just my preference, depending on your taste you might prefer them off. True Concealment was recently updated for LW2 as well so theres that.
>>
>>166263916
If those tactical drawn out firefights is what you crave LW2 has that but Timers will keep you from taking part in them ALOT. I'd say try it out and depending on how your experience goes, supplement it with a tweak to Timers in the ini or True Concealment. Or Both. Whatever ends up tickling your fancy. You might have no problem with them at all, who knows.
>>
>>166264239

Same here.

Is it just me or are there comrads with shitty RNG? I can't get through first couple infiltration missions, without losing 2 soldiers + every 1 injured. >Second mission is VIP mission
>Expect to get niggered by the timer so I ambush the first pod, works pretty well
>A pod that was literally hidden on a rooftop behind my position and a few tiles from my spawn activates and gets an instant kill flank shot ON THEIR ACTIVATION TURN
>Half my team panics
>Forced to run the objective

MAGNIFICENT design

Running was not only the only solution left, but it actually worked because all the pods were on my side of the map

The problem with this mod is that once you remove the stupid "kill all enemies" clause all vanilla missions had, you end up with a game where the best strategy is to run the objective and GTFO

And ironically, the only reason stealth is the only viable option on some missions is the timer. You can't go quick when you are in a firefight. You can go quick when you are going around the two pods on the map and running the objective with carefully placed Overwatch

Maybe if I didn't have a timer over my head I could do something fun like actually fight, instead of being a fucking pussy and stealthing the entire mission because I risk to get activation turn anally pounded because I don't have five turns to carefully clear every building I come across

What mod would you recommend that actually works with LW2 right now ?

Honestly, they might as well make "No Timers" a Second Wave option at this point
>>
>>166266580
Well first off you can go into the LWOverhaul.ini and turn them off there. Personally I'm using True Concealment now that its updated for LW2, its the best way of handling timers while not doing away with them entirely imo and I'm enjoying myself alot more with it.
>>
Do you guys use Hidden Potential?
>>
>>166266769

Yeah, it's pretty fun. You actually end up with good and bad soldiers and can plan accordingly

Without it, everyone is just a blank slate and your godlike soldier can be replaced with another godlike soldier of the same rank

It also gives more sense to some of the attachments. Your soldier with awful fucking aim could probably use a scope

So how are you building your troops so far?

Namely your Grenadiers, Specialists, Assaults, and Rangers.
>>
My genius timer mod idea:

Reinforcements spam timer that also cancels your current evac zone. (Firebrand has to bug out to avoid the swarm of ships)

The reinforcement swarm arrives on timer+1, your evac zone timer is reset based on all of the current variables just like a normal evac timer, and you get to call in its new location.

How much of that is even doable I wonder...
>>
I could use some help. I'm using Long War 2 and I so far have not recovered a single corpse from missions. What's going on? I've put 10 hours into it and I still can't make a skull jack because I haven't recovered an ADVENT officer corpse.

Assault is the new crit machine.
All crit+ abilities and close combat specialist
>Shotgun with laser sight and extended, with talon rounds and serum in the Icarus suit
>Pop serum and Icarus jet into the middle of inactive pod
>Pod activates, they all move
>Get a free super-crit on all of them
>Get another movement and crit

If I put my assault with close combat and my ninja with blade master on an enemy dropflare, they fucking shred the entire group as they land. it's glorious.

ADVENT didn't like his fictional novels about interstellar travel and humanity rising up against their masters, even though they were printed before they even arrived, and so started burning them around the globe. Ceramic plate is also really fucking heavy and can literally only be tossed on the front and back of the torso without severely hampering movement and endurance.

There's a reason soldiers don't get arm and leg armor, and it's not because militaries are cheap-asses. It's because it's literally never worth weighing them down that much.

Rate this mechanic:

>Rework Throw Grenade to only blow up on the beginning of the next turn to give enemies a chance to run away from it (for all grenades)
>Greatly increase AOE and slightly increase cover damage for frags (or decrease cover HP for flimsie types of cover),
>frags have mooderate chance to disorient (flashbangs get a chance to stun)
>frags lose some of their damage if there is cover between the explosion and the target
>New ability: Cook Grenade, removes the delay on grenades, costs 1 action, ends the turn. You must throw the grenade as the first action on the soldiers next turn, or it explodes in his arms.

Would need additional balancing, but this is the gist of it. Same changes apply to ADVENT.

If you can properly code the enemy AI so it can't be exploited for shennanigans, then it seems like a decent idea. Support grenade should be exempted and Grenadeiers would be horrifically broken if their Nade Launchers were exempted from that rule.

Grenadiers launched grenades would explode on contact like rockets, just with firing arc (and with scatter like rockets), but they are exempt from the rule. I was thinking of reduced ranges for both launch and throw grenade.

>>
>>166277340
You need to pay closer attention to how long the mission will be available. If the window is too narrow, don't go in.

How long it's staying up depends on your haven intel gathering levels and I believe mission type and RNG factor in as well.

You don't get much supplies because your havens have moles. Get high ranking advisers in there and try to correct the issue.
>>
>>166277340
Watch the time until expiration for missions. You can't always get enough time to 100%. The intel job helps this.
Skipping missions is fine.
Your € income depends on how many resistance members are on the Supply job.

>>166277782
No, that's literally what you should be doing at the start. Pump the shit outta intel and only send your team when you can squeeze a 4 or 5 man squad into the time limit. You should be skipping dozens of missions at the start and it's only mid late game where you can solid snake your way through shit with 1 or 2 rookies.

Rendezvous missions are not optional, if they pop up you are forced to play them out.

The benefit of completing them is that you will eliminate the infiltrator in your haven (not sure if permanently) which will mean your supplies from that haven will stop disappearing to unknown causes

Anyone know how to convert a weapon from a mod into an SMG for LW2? Is there an existing SMG template that I could use for it?

I want to go full Slav-COM and need the AKS74U for my shinobis and grenadiers
>>
>>166291067
Isn't that already an SMG? or has an option in the .inis?
Beagle was using that in his LW2 playthrough as an SMG i'm pretty sure.
>>
>>166291209
Nah, by default it's a rifle. You can edit the .ini to change damage and clip size, boost mobility and reduce detection radius but I'm pretty sure the game doesn't recognize it as an SMG and it wouldn't provide any bonus to infiltration time in LW2.
>>
>>166291552
Though now that I think about it the infiltration bonus isn't that great and it's probably not worth the effort of plowing through all the SMG code to find the relevant line. I'll just edit the attributes in the .ini to match those of an SMG and call it a day.

I've been having a really bad framerate lately. My computer isn't anything special, and I think TBS games are basically playable no matter how choppy they get, but we're talking really REALLY bad. Single digits bad. 8 FPS in the fucking TITLE SCREEN bad. And despite my system apparently struggling to render a frame in less than 100 milliseconds, my graphics card isn't running especially hot. It's above idle temp, but not hot enough for the GPU fan to start making that loud whine I've come to associate with good graphics.

Do other people have this problem?

Is it a solvable problem? Is there some setting I can tweak to make my computer stop fucking around and at least try to render a bit faster?

Hey, /xcg/, I just got XCOM 2 and so far I'm really happy with it, but I get weird crashes during gameplay.

It seems to be tied specifically to Sectoids doing shit, and it's happened three times (once when one cast a psionic power, once when I overwatched one, and once when one ass blasted one of my dudes). Actually, from a bit of experimentation, I think there might be something wrong with the graphics card itself, or its driver. I'm getting single-digit framerates from my other semi-modern games too. I'm not sure how long it's been like this, since I've been playing mostly pre-2010 games for the past few days, but shit was running reasonably smooth before.

Dwarf Fortress still runs fine, so I'm pretty sure the CPU is good.

Soldiers get bonus if they participate in multiple missions under the same officer, more missions together = bigger bonuses.

Just for organization; however, soldiers get bonus stats if they serve under the same commander for several missions, with the stats stacking the longer they've served together, so squads are very useful to capitalize on said bonus.

>>
>>166308717
I played with it a bit, not for six months or so so this may be slightly off. it assigns points to each soldier's relationships with every other soldier, going on a mission with them results in a straight stat boost that increases with relationship level. so it successfully incentivised using the same squad, but it's pretty boring.

I think with LW squads you could make it so that each squad can earn bonuses or something, but you'd have to lock soldiers in and that would be seriously damaging to flexibility.

This is all wrong. And mods do not = only gameplay mods. There are map mods, cosmetic mods, voice packs, UI Tweaks and fixes, bug fixes, music stuff, etc.

Also what mods are bad for xcom? What do you mean? Because obviously XCOM1 has LW and openxcom has a bunch of integrated mods and there are some cool overhauls and tons of small mods as well.

Play vanilla first, you goddamn alien sympathizer.
>>
>>166311608
I may be out of the loop on openxcom but when they first launched the modding site there was nothing but trash and some decent sprite work but 0 balancing. And what is wrong with playing a game vanilla first time? Why do you need MLP hats, god awful voice packs and dubstep OSTs? Modding a game before even playing it is fucking stupid no matter how "minor" it is unless it's the specific bugfix mods.

>people like this in every game general

Anyone on the fence, please don't listen to these retards, there is no reason to play vanilla games when there are huge communities of players putting together mod lists and packs that have detailed descriptions and recommendations that you can read through. Bugfixes, UI improvements, additional content, complete overhauls, it's all out there for YOU to pick and choose. Don't make yourself play the very baseline if something catches your eye. A good campaign takes a long time, your time, not that of some random from the internet.
>>
>>166313709
The game has objective jagged edges. I don't know why you insist on using ridiculous strawman's for your argument [probably because you don't have a real one] Dubstep music when most people would use the XCOM 1 soundtrack, Power ranger outfits when you have Capn Bubs cosmetics and tacticool armor that looks good as well as XCOM 1 ports.

The jagged edges would be things like the tactical camera that only turns at 90 degree increments. The fact that smoke grenades were initially broken and did nothing. The fact that some of the gts upgrades were broken initially. The game stealing control from you obnoxiously so that one of your advisers can give you the same line or advice for the sixth time. Commander we are losing civilians left and right, commander we are losing civilians left and right, commander we are losing civilians left and right, as well as obnoxious amounts of dead time during tactical and strategic actions that simply waste time and consist of you patiently waiting for the game to decide it it time to move on.

There are mods that objectively improve the base game and so there is no real reason not to use them.

Should I play it vanilla or with mod, like The Long War?
Any tip on how to get the most fun out of it?
Xcom 2 is the one with the hot Snek alien right?
>>
>>166314668
Do not start with long war. Do not start with any mods that change the gameplay on the tactical or strategic side.
Get ready to haul ass. If you aren't moving foward every turn, you are probably setting up to fail the objective, or get your whole squad captured.
>>
>supply raid mission

And those are all things that show the huge change into mods. You see the difference of how the game is improved with them. Just diving into QOL mods without knowing how and why the mods exist makes you know not know how ""objectively"" the game was improved and has you appreciate the mods more.
>>
>>166314921

>>166316034

>>166315275
Actually, never mind. I think I'm just going to start my campaign over.

I could easily have better equipment at this point if I knew what I know now and next time I go up against an advent tower I can probably steam roll it with full mag weapons and tier three secondary weapons instead of only four mag rifles and some happy thoughts.
>>
>>166315912
So you are saying that releasing a game that has more jagged edges then a version that is cleaned up from the beginning gives a superior experience? Because you realize that is what you are arguing right? Because that is a completely ridiculous argument.
Yes, I will take a smoother game play experience straight from the get go.

"Appreciating" the mods is not the end goal, having fun playing the game is. I only say that since you seem to have forgotten.
>>
>>166315912

The smoother game is just a bonus.

Honestly I think if LW2 just re-worked it a mission ratio roughly 50% hard timers and 50% soft timers (see reinforcements, meld, etc.) and no timers, things would be excellent.

Timers do give an experience that no timers and soft timers do not give, and if they are balanced fine I enjoy them.
Between different sized squads (two man stealth runs, 3 man hit an run, 4 man hit and run or brawl, 5 and up brawls), different squad comps (which will differ depending on hard, soft, no timers), and a host of different objectives with hard, soft, no timers and the generated maps, the tactical phase should have excellent variety in gameplay an be quite fun.

>>166317190
I like infiltration more. It's more intuitive and is not as heavy handed.

>And I had fun on my first fun fucking shit up

The file is in russian by default but you can change it to english pretty easily. I didn't think it'd be this quick that Long War 2 was cracked but, there it is. I couldn't find a separate torrent or anything so you'll have to download the entire game + dlcs again to get the mods but it's only 20 gigs or so to d/l so it really doesn't take that long to do.

Vanilla XCOM 2 is known for having performance issues on some Pcs, no matter how powerful the machine that runs it.
The sectoid psionic powers just have a clusterfuck of particles in their animations, that's probably why the game crashes.
Long War fixed it for me, try following this guide and keep in mind that when you finish Vanilla you'll finally get an optimized, more stratigic and FUCKING UNFAIR game.
