Sera was insanely predictable and by the books, but I guess he is that more average main boy type chara.

For me BWS was much more about the story than "the boys"; they came first as characters. I mean, I usually play otoge for romance and normal VNs for story, but sometimes I appreciate playing a game that prioritizes telling an interesting and ambitious story without entirely giving up that aspect. Not that I think BWS writing is without its faults; namely the route branching toward the later portion.

That said, I've only played a route or two of DL and so it wouldn't be fair of me to try to compare the two. I'm also way too sleepy to type anything more thorough or coherent at this time.

Play Bloody Nightmare before Last Hope. Other than that it doesn't matter much. I'd suggest starting with a cat route(Mejojo or Auger)in BN and a wolf route(you can only start with Rath)in LH. The main story in both has the MC stick with the respective sides for a good portion of the story, so staying on their side for the first route makes things flow better.

Is there a reason why you say to start a cat route? They're a bit despicable, even in comparison to the rest of the cast and it's not so encouraging for a first playthrough.

Like I said in that post, it's the cats' game so they get the most development and you're stuck with them most of the time. The individual routes for the other clans all break off and end fairly abruptly, so ultimately the cats have the routes that flow the best and you might as well go for the most cohesive route for the first playthrough. Also some routes(Arles and Julian iirc)only unlock after you do them, so your choice for a first playthrough is limited in the first place.

You've seen the worst of them by the time the routes split anyway. Then you get to spend the rest of the game suffering slightly less because of them and occasionally get to see them suffer too.

Generally there's no way other than paying to get anything in Ensemble Stars unless you only choose one or two boys to event and gacha for, you're going to end up throwing money at the game in the end to get what you want. I deleted the app recently after I realized just how much money I'd spent on a phone game so I can't check against the in app prices but it's about $25 for 125 which almost gets you a roll (135), most cost effective is 360 for about $60 though.
