There's nothing bad with the game being simple to pick up.
One of the major problems of fighting games is how difficult it is to get into them. Complex execution and obscure mechanics keep new players from getting into fighting games.

It required people to go out of their way to get something working at a basic level, something that games have been doing already since the 90s. This is true, partly the reason why smash is also as big as it is. Its not hard to just pick up and play.
If you define that as a great game because of that success, then go for it. However for me, it still doesn't give it an excuse for its gameplay and fuckups along the way, which is why I said this topic was entirely subjective.
