1. How do I get in there
2. How do I not get brutally murdered?

There is a necklace of Bloodlust in there and I want it.

It happened on the turn I entered the zone. Are instadeaths like this normal in Qud?

On the translucent wall, use a wand of digging (and/or disintegration if you're pre-trunk).

Oklob plants don't deal a tremendous amount of damage by themselves, but 4 of them could really mess you up. That'd be semi-dangerous even for an endgame character with rCorr. Still, they can't move. If you find yourself getting fucked, you can run/blink/tele away, literally just around the corner.

I personally don't think a Necklace of Bloodlust would be worth all that trouble, though.

ToME4

Sadly the game itself is not that amazing, but it has some neat classes.
>>
>>165726663
let's see:
-there are 2 more earlygame quests available in Joppa (one from the Zealot and one from the random shrine)
-both shortblades and longswords have had their skill trees reworked/buffed since that guide was written. longblades are no longer the shittiest weapon type, and max agi dual shortblades is just fine as a primary offense
-tinkering was also changed a bit.in addition to straight up crafting items you can also now find "mod" recipes that let you add bonuses to pre-existing equipment
>>
>>165726983
PCB
timelords don't really have time manipulation powers in the sense of time travel and shit
they can zap monsters with time spells that have a chance to do shit like devolve monsters to weaker forms, but the only real time manipulation they get is the lategame double-move spell that just immediately gives them an extra turn
>>
>>165727362
>-there are 2 more earlygame quests available in Joppa (one from the Zealot and one from the random shrine)
Should I do them before, after or while doing the red rock one? Basically, what's the ideal progression route through the quests?
>-both shortblades and longswords have had their skill trees reworked/buffed since that guide was written. longblades are no longer the shittiest weapon type, and max agi dual shortblades is just fine as a primary offense
Are cudgels and axes still preferred though?

Thanks, buddy.
>>
The mechanics that were inspired in Dungeons of Everchange from the P&P RPG Dungeon World is kinda cool. Hope it doesn't get abandoned.
>>
>>165727656
I think all the weapon skills are good now. Maybe cudgels are the least useful?
Longswords are pretty skillpoint-intensive though so maybe not the best choice for low-int characters, and shortblades are kind of point-costly as well because you are gonna want to take dual-wielding skills with them

Fuck no.

If it's not turn-based or grid-based, it kind of automatically is a roguelite at best. But Let It Die really only is "like Rogue" for semi-procedurally generated levels and player ghosts. Otherwise, its main focus is being a hack-n-slash game.

Hi everybody, I'm currently working on a rogue-like RPG and I was wondering how I should do magic and traps.

Should players be able to detect traps or should trap-detection be based on solely on the player's skill points?

Also I don't like the idea of having magic based around a mana system with regenerating mana (especially if a game has heal spells) since a wizard will have an 'unlimited' amount of fire balls he can cast but an archer doesn't have an unlimited amount of arrows. I was thinking of using a regent system in which a wizard will need to use magical artifacts in order to cast magic where the artifacts have a given amount of charges.

What do you guys think about these ideas?

>>
>>165725409
qud instadeaths aren't really a thing unless you're running around the deathlands
(dont run around the deathlands)

but grenade damage doesn't scale with level at all, and so if you are unlucky enough for a random enemy to spawn with a grenade while you're level 1 you might be fucked

IIRC they made low-level enemies much less likely to have grenades and shit in the more recent versions
>>

you could just give the archer unlimited arrows

AC reduction does nothing to any enemies not wearing armor, so it's not a flat damage bonus, it's circumstantial. Do you switch from your war axe to your flail when you come across an orc warrior wearing chain? interesting tactical decision, since you will have some M&F skill from training axes, you will be able to use the flail effectively, but is the damage bonus worth switching?

Almost everything has AC so it's just additional damage thus boring.

>>165755696

But the game is already too easy even if everyone has AC. Actually, no matter how many new dangerous monsters the devs add, people still label Crawl as too easy, regardless of irony and credibility.

Yeah, but that Lajatang will carry the shit out of you. And, hell, you might find the "Hysh" quarterstaff to still be useful, since vamp, high enchanment, and MR+ are probably the best bonuses you could ask for on a random artefact.

>full inventory
Welcome to roguelikes, anon. Be sure to use "Ctrl+f" to find anything you've left on the ground.

Vaults:5 should probably be your next goal after Depths. It's dangerous, yes, but as long as you buff yourself up (haste, might, resistance, and agility potions before going down; I also recommend eating your rations until you're Engorged) and remember your God abilities (Trog's Hand if you need the extra MR+, Brothers in Arms and any summoning scrolls you have should be used time and time again; I'm not a fan of using Berserk on the Vaults:5 stairs, but you may have more success than I did), you should be fine.

The other potential third runes (Slime Pit and Abyss, arguably the Tomb, too) are a bit too weird and dangerous for a newb and nearly useless for a Trog user to pursue.

How does PCB race changing work?
Are levels recalculated based on exp, or does it keep your level?
How doable is it to run a Snotling until lvl 50 and just switch to another race?

I do like the frogmen race.
>>
>>165769719
>Are levels recalculated based on ex
yes they are
this means that if you're a chaos-warrior and your god changes you to a snotling you get like 5-10 more FREE chaos patron actions immediately

if you just recently hit 50 and you poly to a higher-xp-penalty race you will lose levels, but most characters will eventually get more than enough xp to stay at 50 as they fight bigger and bigger enemies
>>
>>165769719
>Are levels recalculated based on exp
Yeah.

Snotling is really terrible, but I imagine you could start as an imp or something for quick levels and switch to a stronger race later on once exp is plentiful.
>>
>>165769941
>he doesn't know
>>
>>165770175
snotling lets you create an artifact mushroom tho

obviously you start as snotling and once you have the eternal mushroom of restoring you spam poly until demigod or tonberry
>>
>>165770523
Huh, the help file doesn't mention that.
At what level to they get it?
>>
>>165771038
ahahaha you don't get it for free; you have to read a scroll of artifact creation on a mushroom

this is only available to snotlings and is just as useless/wasteful as it sounds
>>
>>165770523
>and once you have the eternal mushroom of restoring
Or you know. spend 1 K at the restoration shop.
By the time you choose to poly, you can spare 1000 coins.

>>165771038
You gotta waste the most sought scroll in the game, the scroll of artifact creation, on a shroom which is the lowest possible consumable with no use whatsoever

Ffs.. Why does every snotling based strategy I have get shot down instantly...

Is Snotling/Imp+Yellowmage a decent combo at least?
You can get your casting time up quickly to get you through the early/mid game, and then change into another race.

Also, what item even lets you change races?
Are there ones for classes/realms too?
>>
>>165771678
Snotlings are shit anon.
Yeeks are literally (practically) 100 times better, have good apts and skills have an acid racial immunity at level 20 and have a 75% xp penalty instead of the snotling's 45%, which is nothing.

Also yellow mages suck big time. How do you plan on polymorphing anyway, considering it's a property only found on the stone of chaos and the fourth chaos spellbook?
>Are there ones for classes/realms too?
Nope.
>>
>>165771280
yeah, the only use for consumable restoration is fighting stat-drainers without the need to recall to town to fix shit

OTOH snotlings do get a bunch of secondary buffs from eating mushroom, artifact or no. I think at the very least haste+heroism, maybe something else too?

>>165771678
the only way to chance races is by spamming "polymorph". it's available on the artifact stone of chaos, rarely as an activation on chaos-themed weapons, and as an activatable mutation itself (beastmen are quite likely to get it)

you can never change class, but any spellcaster with 2 realms can change their secondary realm at will just by 'G'aining from the new realm's book. note that you permanently lose all the spell slots you spent on the realm you're giving up, so if you're planning on switching a realm out later on don't spend slots on spells you're not gonna use.
>>
>>165772012
>at the very least haste+heroism
They get giant strength, haste, heroism and it cures poison/heals for a cure serious wounds potion.
Still, it's nothing.
>>
Oh, also stoneskin.
>>
>>165772012
>the only way to chance races is by spamming "polymorph"
You can also stand in front of a toxic waste breather, if you're particularly desperate. Also the stone mask makes you a vampire, which is on the better side of races.

crawl needs an earlygame unique to force people to learn how to walk away

make it a Qud-style Slumberling that just sleeps forever unless the player wakes it by tabbing it, at which point it eviscerates them for a near-instant kill
something so monstrously powerful and yet so blindly oblivious that even the stupidest mibeplayer can figure out that it's better not to wake it up
>>
(and i guess it would have to be special-cased not to wake up from noise or failed stealth checks. only from actual player actions)

desu, I feel like hydras fill that role in lair already, as incredibly dangerous monsters that can't do shit if you evoke feet.

>>

>>165776825
nah, sigmund IS very dangerous but he's still beatable, and new players doing mibe or something will learn bad habits if/when they actually beat him just by going berserk and holding down tab

you need something that even a mibe has no chance of beating -- a unique where the ONLY way to survive is to play correctly by not waking it up

If so I want to give you some tips that I wish I knew the first time playing
-You can get a powerful artifact weapon, "Excalibur" quite early. If you're lawful and at least level 5 you can get it by dipping your long sword to a fountain with 1/6 chance. 5/6 of the time you'll get usual dipping effects, some of them are bad so just in case have an emergency escape item. It's usually worth it
-You can curse test items with your pets. If your pet doesn't want to step on the same tile as an item(assuming there isn't food on the same tile), or when it does but the game says "the pet moves only reluctantly" you can know for sure that one item on the tile is cursed. Also dropping items on altars, no matter who they belong to, show you if the items are cursed/blessed/uncursed
Other than these two can't think of anything you can't figure out with some logic, if you played some other roguelikes before you should be fine

So I'm on and off with this game a lot, never even getting into Lair cause I'm too scared to start a game. Decided to try a Troll Berserker cause it's ez apparently. Is it worth buffing up int to get some spells later on or just stick to Str?
>>
>>165840096
Stick to STR and DEX.
I myself have no fucking clue what's the ideal of each these days. Someone once gave me an arbitrary value of 16 DEX to aim for so I keep my base value at that. But then trolls are huge so they shouldn't be getting much EV from DEX anyway, no idea about how much that missing accuracy from it will hurt.
>>
>>165840096
Dex only. You have enough str.

Plus, you were a MiBe: Stealth was never going to be your main aim.

nah tome has multiple lives but it's still mostly permadeath when you game over, except for the system of unlocking races/classes/alternate skill trees

mystery dungeon games usually have some permadeath-evasion shit like mechanics that let you keep items between runs

>>
>>165864660
oh you mean like that donor incentive in ToME that lets you keep items between runs?

MD games have a bank and item storage. You can store your cash and items in there for a later run. Thing is, you keep nothing if you die. It's not permadeath evasion - if you win, you get to keep your reward so you don't start with zilch the next run. Each run resets you to level 1 and you get nothing to start out save 1 food ration. If you played well enough, you can give yourself a starting bonus, from the stuff you kept from the previous run. Even then, that's only in story mode - once you clear your way through that crap, or not bother with it at all, it becomes a regular roguelike where all dungeons force reset you to lv. 1 and no equipment.

Think of it like permadeath whether you win or lose, but without character selection, and if you win you get to have equipment on your next run (story mode only).
>>
>>165864797
I think >>165851134's point was that wands (in trunk and onwards) are now mostly/entirely pointless, besides digging.

As someone who previously defended them...I can't disagree. Wands, by design, are weak; it takes fairly high skill for them to be useful against even moderate threats. And yet, very few species have good aptitudes for Evocations: the ones that do tend to get more firepower out of magic (Spriggans, Deep Dwarves, and Kobolds), along with their melee skills. So, you'll very often be dumping XP into a skill that could have more use somewhere else.

Like I said, I'm a fan of wands. Removing them entirely would be a mistake, but right now, it's not the worst idea...

IMHO:
* Removing the overpowered self-wands (hasting, heal wounds, tele) was a good idea.
* Unless the average aptitude for Evocations improve (and there's little in-universe reason for that), then Evocations should be abandoned as a skill.
* Wands should istead scale with, say, your XL or perhaps nothing. But, importantly, they should be heavily buffed (and also have much fewer charges).
* Wands should be rarer; recharging scrolls could either be much rarer or about the same (depending on if wands should even be considered for extended game use, which I'm not entirely against).

In my ideal vision, wands would be strong and powerful panic buttons in the early game (a huge boost to, say, a mage who finds an early wand) but become less relied on as the game progress, partially due to their rarity and limited charges.
>>
>>165867627
oh yeah i forgot about that tome donor thing
it's pretty bullshit

alright i'll concede that MD is probably more roguelike than tome4
>>
>>165864223
>obscure
Obscure is their damage calculations. Obscure is the number by which an amulet of inaccuracy decreases your to-hit. Obscure is the lines of code which prevent AoE effects from hitting outside your field of vision even if their AoE is sufficient to do so.

Obscure was not the water-shock mechanic, since it had an animation and a message related to it.
>>
>>165867854
OR, here me out here, this is a crazy, radical idea that is probably going to get me a lot of flack, there could be some sort of higher power, something above the player, a sort of 'god', if you will, that is dedicated towards wands. They might, potentially, give the player a boost towards using wands, rewarding the player for using them, and allowing the player to perhaps build a character around using wands.

I also have this crazy idea that makes no sense, but it involves that same higher power, and that higher power uses your evocations skill instead of invocations, and gifts you cards that you can do all sorts of crazy things with, simply by evoking them. But that's just crazy talk, a fever dream.

Talos you have to use archery or smack him in melee, probably not worth the effort if you can even hit him.

Anon's playing a lich, right?
For talos surely you'd just try to get a decent-size pile of summoners and a staff of restore mana then walk around a corner and wait for 9999 turns as the ever-growing pack of dudes tickles him to death
he can't heal-self and he can only summon aid if he ISN'T currently getting gangbanged by a room full of LVWZ

What are some roguelikes where all the character "creation" happens during play? Brogue for example, there's no class or race selection, there's no stats. You build your character as you play based on the things you pick up.
>>
>>165873212
Demigod (or pick your preferred race) monk of life/nature is literally one of the easiest combos in the game.
>>
>>165872978
although looking at the code it looks like the ability to summon clones of dead uniques is actually just tied to being above level 98, So J, Morgoth, Unicorn, and GCAWDLs can all do it

it's a 1/3 chance to happen if they dont get any alive uniques from the casting, otherwise it summons something else like angels or greater undead
and it can only rez uniques who are over level 70
>>
Turns out that Freelancers can grab Death (for assorted genocides) /Nature for herbal healing, wall of stone/detection spell etc/Trump (teleport away/dimension door/teleport/ various summons), which is impossible as any other combo except for sorcerers, which are really horrible for a ton of other reasons.
But they have no way to regen SP as Sorcerers can. Also they're an experimental class, so it feels like cheating.
In the end I guess it's always psions who get the upper hand with these things with their ability to deal 600+ damage, heal for 600+, regen SP by the truckload, haste and god knows what else.

>>165873212
Yeek monk of nature.
>>
>>165873212
Dont listen to the anons telling you to pick any race that isn't Tonberry. It synergizes amazingly with Monk's large number of blows and gives you great damage without the tonberry's normal item-reliance (needing to find +attacks weapons).

Nature is a great realm because it's chock full of utility spells, giving you resists, mapping, detection, and eventually clairvoyance and a sizable heal. Monk (especially tonberry monk) doesn't need any damage from their spellbooks because they're good at punching things.

Hey guys, just escaped with the orb for the first time! MiBe with good drops sealed the deal I guess.

However, it's hard for me to get past the lair on any caster character. I feel like I never get any decent spells to deal with all the enemies.
I've tried DeCj hundreds of times and can never get past Lair 6. I get battlesphere up and running and still end up getting rekt.
Should I worship Sif Muna instead of Vehumet?

Also, what's the best start for a spellcaster? Air,Earth,Fire,Ice or Venom? Fuck being a wizard.
>>
>>165879151
Certainly not great, but far and away better damage than anything else I'd found. Second best was something like a garbage craft spear.
>>
>>165879451
like it's actually better damage when you wield it? because a 4d5 weapon is gonna do less damage than a regular 2d5 sword with an elemental brand except against resistant shit, but on strongold:15 you dont care about that yet
unless you just havent found anything with a non-shitty to-dam enchantment
>>
>slays and brands aren't cumulative, only the most effective variation is used

>>
>>165879256

>>
>>165879256
Wizard>ice>fire>earth>air=venom

>>
>>165867854

This could be remedied by removing Ranged Weapons entirely (except for monsters) because they encourage kiting and is better than Evocations by a large margin. There you go, no need to buff Evocations; that's like 3 (three) goblins in 1 large rock.
>>
>>165879759
The regular ele brands do more than double damage? I'm going to have to pay more attention to that next time I play a non-monk.

Also, do shields on monks have some hidden drawback? Seems like it's just the usual weight one. I was expecting it to negate all my double kicks and the like.
>>
>>165881639
yes anon, most brands are x3 damage vs nonresistant, super-general ones like slay evil/living are x2, *slay* drac/undead is x5

note that brands only multiply damage from the weapon's DICE, not any +dam bonus from enchantment or slaying gear or tonberryness. this is why brands are more effective on big-dice weapons. Ringil is 5d5 but effectively 10d5 vs evil and 15d5 vs non-cold resistant enemies.

as a monk you get an AC bonus for leaving slots empty, but other than that and the weight limit there's no downsides to using a shield
>>
>>165881307
I'm playing on the current Crawl engine, I think Dj's are obsolete.

>>165881393
You're telling me Wizard is a better start than a conjurer? Wizard only has good utility, but it lacks any hard hitting spells. Sure you can probably get by with conjure flame and mephitic cloud, but it would be a struggle until you find another book.
>>
>>165881595

Ranged weapons is currently suffering from the past Pakellas problem of having unlimited charges except it's worse. It encourages kiting because the ammos/charges are practically unlimited instead of a feature that is only used to gain advantage for a moment while swapping to melee once the enemies are in range because the resource should have been limited. The solution for Ranged weapons is not to mulch enemy ammo because Okawaru and Trog still exists and both of them are not going to get removed any time soon therefore its only salvation is to get removed.
>>
>>165882630
>I'm playing on the current Crawl engine,
I could give you a version that has Djinn if you want, you could l2spells on it and then go back to the current Crawl once you get the hang of it.

>>
>>165882630
No, Conjurer is the best spellcasting start. I wouldn't recommend some obsolete shit like Dj, just do draconian instead.

Draconian Conjurer of Vehumet is a very strong beginner mage combo.
>>
>>165879256

>>165879256

Earth elementalists are the best because they work against everything. Conjurers are the same and probably better just because of Battlesphere but it's boring.
>>
>>165883998
It's not like EE is any less boring than conjurer. Sandblast and Stone arrow are just straight damage like magic dart/IMB, and LRD/petrify is fiddly shit that has some niche uses.
>>
>>165883998
on the other hand FE/IE get spells with more useful effects than just "do damage to target enemy" (conjure flame, ice beasts, ozo's)

It has niche uses because you're supposed to follow the one true path of character development and become a generic tablord.
>>
>>165884617
breaking hard walls and having a sort of pseudo-smite against enemies near walls is the very definition of a niche use.

It's not something you would use a ton like battlesphere + magic dart.
>>

So, I'm >>165867854, and for fun, I actually implemented some of this (in a fairly lazy way, though).

https://mega.nz/#!rV4W3Cxa!CFyYBDeBeZb7Afv79j7ZXDDN4D9HrC04LyRy0IdW-dc

Mostly relevant to people who can compile Crawl on their own. You'd want to put these files in your crawl/crawl-ref/source folder, replacing the same-named files.

In evoke.cc:
* Lazily changed the "spell power" formula for wands, so that you consistently deal power with your wands as if you had Evocations at level 20. Should probably configure this with the other evokables, too, but for now I'm OK with this.

In item-prop.cc:
* Another lazy change. Since wands are a lot more powerful by default, I reduced their charges to be like that of all "very good wands": 9 max charges. I might reduce Clouds and Scattershot to 6, but I think getting a lucky superpowerful item is fine, too.

In makeitem.cc:
* Changed the rate at which wands spawn. Officially, wands don't spawn before "item_level == 7" (roughly around D:6 to D:7), but I now allow them to spawn ASAP and at a reasonable-ish rate towards the beginning of the game, similar to the rate you might find food. However, past the first few floors, wands will be one of the rarer items you'll find, similar to magical staves.

In shopping.cc:
* Semi-lazy change. To compensate for being more powerful, wands are fairly expensive now. I could/should work out the kinks to make sure it works as well I hope, but I'm also not well-versed in how specific money amounts are chosen. From the few wizmode tests I did, it *seemed* to work as expected, though.

In spl-book.cc:
* Wand of flame was buffed back to being like the previously-removed Wand of fire, since it now uses Bolt of Fire as its base spell.

Interesting facts from makeitem: have you ever wondered why Exp. potions are so rare? For any potion that spawns, there is a 2/1065 chance of it being a potion of experience.

got a question about ToME 4 if you guys don't mind

I've been playing a Cornac Cursed, usually 1-10 is challenging, but then from 11-25 I'm an engine of death, I burn everything down fast as shit,

then I reach Dreadfell 9, the master looks at me funny, and my character blows up, can anyone give me tips for how to deal with this piece of shit?

Are you strictly adhering to the build meta? if you build your character wrong, you will die every time, you have to follow it step-by-step.
>>
>>165897789

>Changed the rate at which wands spawn

This would just lead to annoying but optimal inventory clutter that the devs are trying to avoid. This is unnecessary. Evokables just need a plain scaling buff to Evocations IMO and leave it at that.

How to learn it: Just play it like you would any other game. When you don't understand something, read the help files.

How to have fun with it: Laugh at your deaths. Try every class and race. Be the best you can be.

Interesting traits: It doesn't adhere to the "less is more" mantra of games like Brogue and DCSS, yet it's still somewhat balanced. This means the replay value is through the roof if you can stand doing similar things repeatedly. Whereas Brogue and DCSS are about limiting your options, PCB is about giving you every option you can.

Today I finally succeeded. I'm pretty happy with myself. I guess now I've gotta get a win with every class, or finally go do Hell/Pan.

I'm especially happy that I managed to snipe High Elf before it got removed.

Barachians were a quick-trigger add because so much has been removed already (and so much is still being scheduled for removal by the time 0.20 is officially released). The devs are still in "remove, remove, remove" mode. Any potentially new/exciting things must be pushed aside or made boring, simply so that they don't get in the way of whatever equilibrium the devs are trying to establish.

So, in a nutshell, they were added to hide the fact that they're just removing things in this upcoming version. Barachians' gimmick is supposed to hide the fact that they're an uninteresting and subpar species.

I have a question about Beogh followers. How should I handle their equipment? I can't see their stats or their skills. There's no way warlords have a skill cap of 14, even when they appear as regular NPCs they use weapons that require higher skill than that. Don't know which file I have to check for these
>>
>>165920316
orcs are monsters and do not use the same skill code as players
they can use any armor without penalty
their attack delay with a weapon is a random number between 1.0 and the weapon's base attack speed, meaning slower weapons are always going to be slower

also, the monster has a "damage" stat which basically works as an inherent slaying bonus to their weapon
orc warlords have 32 "damage", so wielding a spear they'd do 1d6 + 1d32 per hit and take an average of 1.05 turns per hit, while with a bardiche they'd do 1d18+1d32 damage with an average attack speed of 1.5

yes this means an orc warlord with a spear is more effective than one with a bardiche, at least if you ignore enemy AC
>>
>>165921384
So giving them fast weapons because of slaying bonus, and giving heavy armour to casters because weapons are not important to them anyway? What about brands on their weapons? I guess I can just give some heavy weapons and some fast weapons since you can get shitload of them anyway. Thanks

Alright, so tonberry psion with rune sword was really energy intensive to farm, so I went back to tonberry freelancer.
At level 50 with max stats he's a caster with 1300/1400 HP, with an offense of 800 unarmed damage/round, capable of casting nature's healing and genocide with a 0% failrate, 400 SP and can regen 5/turn (which is really shitty, but I guess it could work out with teleporting around a lot).
I mean, It's cheap but it could work. Worried about the Sp regen though.

The resurrection isn't viable at all and so expensive that it's broken. The piety gain from 5* to 6* is also abhorrent that it simply takes tooooooo long even with an amulet of faith. The chance of orc followers' corpse to immediately disappear when they die is high enough since it follows the standard corpse drop of normal monsters.
>>
>>165930513

To give you an idea of how expensive the mediocre resurrection for a single dumb orc is:

3 Step From Time = 1 Res,
10 Smites = 1 Res,
6-8 Upheavals = 1 Res
10-15 Cleansing Flames = 1 Res.

I'm just lost at what I should focus on. So far I'm mostly using venom bolt and iron bolt to survive the lair but I think I might have to branch outside of both poison and earth if Sif doesn't bless me with stronger earth spells.

Wizard is basically a great start for utility spells but very dependent on RNG to actually be functional when you hit Lair. Your primary goal is being able to kill stuff, so yeah, focus on just 1 or 2 spell schools that you already have spells with potential from. I wouldn't dump too many points into poison as it becomes relatively useless later on in the game. Iron bolt is all you need though, it'll carry you for the entire game.
>>
>>165948561
isn't the point of anything eldritch being hopeless and ultimately fucked up no matter how hard you try to fight the horrors? it really fits the roguelike genre
>>
>>165949402
I know poison isn't that useful but I plan on only grabbing 3 runes anyway.
Still, I might branch into either fire or ice because no better earth spells are dropping.
I'm also wondering if I should dump XP into necromancy for dispel undead because I've been getting tough player ghosts all play
>>
>>165950713
There's not much point branching into a bunch of shit unless you're an ashenzari guy, because a compact char will always have more survivability than one with skills all over the place, in a 3-rune game anyway. So I wouldn't get stuff like dispel undead just yet.

You'll probably want to go into fire ideally, since bolt of fire/magma will carry you a long, long way

Is anyone else disappointed that the last big update for Shadow of the Wyrm is almost entirely item-destruction? At least with the branding update, non-artifacts can be worth using- until you get one of the many better artifacts.

Semi-related, that artifact longbow is ridiculously overpowered in comparison to literally any other ranged weapon. 4d6 is huge in comparision to the 1d4 or 1d6 that normal, non-branded bows get.

I remember someone in these threads wanting Norse giants in the game. I figure these will show up on the new tower floors.
>>
>>165989657
Well if you don't NEED to cast your piety-costing ablities (and you aren't full piety) then you shouldn't be using them.

That said it can still be helpful to have a mushroom buddy walking around with you. Just don't let it fight tabfodder that you don't need it for because it can only attack a limited number of times before dying.
>>
>>165989954

It's poorly designed. I didn't worship a god without even a single passive ability to play literally as an atheist through early game to prevent getting a guilt piety loss. Gods are supposed to help you and give convenience as soon as you worship them or at least possess a few abilities that could be conveniently used and always present throughout the game.

I can answer that, I tried it in the hope it would take off the "stop hitting yourself" attribute that makes using them damn near impossible. It didn't work. It reset it back to -50,+30 and all the trimmings, in fact it even re-cursed it!

You can also spend a ton of gold to enchant to-hit up to +10 and then read a scroll of artifact creation on it, but I can't really figure out how to circumvent the hitting yourself problem.

You can enchant it up to +12 in fact, unless you are a warrior or one of a few other classes who get to enchant to +15 in town

As for the hitting yourself problem -- you can be a samurai and do damage by throwing it instead of using it for melee (just watch out for that 1% chance that it fails to return!)

Sorry I should have elaborated. I'm still taking hundreds in damage when they breathe lightning on me. I was hoping someone could explain how AC and magic defense and stuff works in PCB?

wizmode.png
17KB, 663x195px
>>166005109
ok some wizmode testing reveals that boomerang's damage is not actually very impressive

just hitting things with the scythe as a max-stats CL50 samurai does about 1100 damage vs evil, but throwing it does only 300ish except on crits

>>166005327
shamblers hit the cap on elemental breath damage, which is 900
even after your 77% resist that's still about 243 damage a pop, so you probably want a staff of healing to fight them mano-a-mano

AC does not affect spell/breath damage at all, except for the Shoot Arrow ""spell""

rune swords increase damage dice and enchantment the more things you kill with them, and can gain brands/slays from killing uniques.
The size of the dice and enchantment are capped based on the level of the things you're killing, so you're not gonna hit 9d9 (+50,+50) just by farming worm masses for an hour
>>
as a general rule, lategame PCB shit WILL be capable of knocking a very big chunk off of your hitpoint bar

There is shit that can cast manastorm for up to 590 unresistable damage (well okay there's only one unique who hits that hard with it...) when many endgame PCB characters have ~1000 HP.

you can get shit like staves of healing that provide an infinitely-rechargable source of ~300 hp per zap, and having renewable healing like this is absolutely necessary if you want to fight stuff later on unless you want to spend all your potions of healing on every single fight
>>
>>166005616
Well for breath attacks specifically you can try to stab the cunt before they get it off so the damage is crippled.
>>
>>166005627

So there's no way to lower that damage, you just got to heal your way out of it? The personality traits in PCB make mention of "magic defense" so I figured there was a hidden stat for it somewhere. Staves of healing are all well and good but you can't use those in the Arena, where I lost to Shambler and got pissed.

Does Rune Sword cap at 9d9 50/50, does it really go that high? With slays and brands that seems insane, might have to give that a go....
>>
>>166006264
"magic defense" is your saving throw, the chance to avoid being affected by spells like confuse, cause mortal wounds, mind blast, etc.
similar to MR in crawl actually
>>
>>166006264
rune sword does not have a hard cap however the chance to gain extra damage dice is lower the higher they are, and on top of that there's only a 1/666 chance to increase them past 9

still most characters with rune swords don't even get to 9d9 dice -- to get there you'd need to be killing level 81+ enemies in bulk

theoretically if you farmed zombified serpents of chaos for infinity years you could get a 12d12 one

Why are the life-saving talents in ToME so shit?

When one kicks in, it uses a turn giving the enemy a free attack that always lets them kill you instantly anyway.
Excessive balancing measure?

AC is your both your chance to evade and your ability to reduce damage.

Breath damage, however, is always going to do consistent levels of damage to begin with because it's based on total monster HP. The primary elements do more total breath damage than the exotic elements, but they also have higher resistance caps so it's easier to counter them.

What this means is that an undamaged shambler, like all undamaged breathing enemies, will ALWAYS do a consistent amount of lightning damage until you reduce it below a certain HP threshold.

This info probably isn't up to date, but it reflects the general idea: http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=6744

You will never, ever be able to completely ignore lategame breathers like shamblers. They will always be a threat without rare and often impractical immunities.

This has to be the first guy I managed to bring to level 20+ in the last two hours.

Killed crap up to level 5, then I started going a little deeper and found a vault with nothing but multicolored low-level p's, grabbed some "good" loot and then sold everything and invested in teleport scrolls when I was around level 15. Trekked to the Juggalo which was an unsurprisingly slow farming technique considering my only beam spell does something like 20 damage and snatched some levels. Planning on testing the waters in Labyrinth, which like arena is the only dungeon that doesn't spawn vaults even in always *fun* rooms mode. Nightmare mode still tends to spawn very *fun* enemies. Last time I tried this I got killed by Dio.

I mean, I'd say it's a bit early to safely do any of Vaults -- but I know you're not a scrub, either.

Honestly, mesmerization isn't the absolute worst thing. It's not fun/ideal, but you can waste a teleport or blink scroll if need be or just walk up to the singing Merfolk and beat the crap out of them. Besides some S-branch uniques that can appear, mesmerization is all you really need to prepare for in Shoals.

Vaults is just one long fight, and fuck getting Marked. I'm not exactly sure how I'd approach it with an Ogre, but I imagine it'd still be a struggle with 22 AC and no strong rF sources.

Welp, they come and they go that's what I say.

I can't understand what's happened, though. These vaults have enemies sealed in compartments, each guarding a specific high level item. I looked at all the mobs inside the vault before entering and I only fought one at a time.

Update:
Apparently an out-of-LOS dark elven sorceror darkness stormed me for 540 damage.

I have no idea where it came from. Maybe that Q that blinked away twenty rooms ago managed to summon something? I don't know.

Anyway, when I'm not being instagibbed this mode is actually pretty fun! I get to pick the juciest vaults guarded by the weakest enemies, then grab all the loot and grow stronger. The unique shape of the vaults themselves is a problem for summoning uniques, because they literally have no space to cast, in some cases. It's gonna make the big J fight a lot easier.

>>
>>166073863
>I splat early when I'm not playing in cheatmode
Not to be mean, but literally how?
>Does this come up a ton?
Not really, as of yet. I don't really use damage spells because
1: the big ones cost too much to use without resting a lot
2: the little ones don't do enough damage to notice
3: I have no idea how much they do, but a level ~40 Sage with ~30 Intelligence had to cast Spirit Bolt about 5 times to kill a Lich, so it can't be that much, especially in comparison to melee damage
It doesn't help that you also have to delve deep to find the high-tier spellbooks, and I haven't really found a reason to yet. Yeah, you can find armor down there with huge resists and huge Ev/So, but you can get to <.75 on most resists by just eating corpses, and you can get huge Ev/So by praying. Not that you need much of either of those anyways; so long as you have enough HP to get hit once, you can just pray and receive mostly free healing.
>>166073863
>I have to admit, I actually kind of like item destruction, but I grew up on ADOM and nethack, and figured that making items safe on the player was a good compromise.

Out of curiosity, why do you think those classes are strong?

In my opinion, 1d100+~10 with two slays is much weaker than many artifacts, which are easily available to any class.

And WItchlings rely on spells which we both agree are weak, only one (cloak) of which has any sort of non direct-damage utility.

Pic-related was a Giant Thief that abused Thievery to get high-tier items from the shrine guardians (including two barbarian rings) and maxed out Duelwielding, Combat, and Short Blades. He also got Long Blades to ~60.
I was expecting all the Strength he got to do more, desu. Then I realised that it's his Dexterity that actually matters for non-heavy weapons, and I was still disappointed.

For pugilists, there's nothing stopping you from wielding a weapon. And until you get some sweet artifact, the base damage will give you a better chance to survive the early game, scaling well against NPC level.

For witchlings, mostly because the spells allow you to overwhelm most enemies before they can even get close to you.

I find the constant nature of their per-level rewards (to a lesser extent sages, I guess) helps ease the issues associated with having an RNG and getting a variable set of items from game to game. Same reason I often liked to play elementalists in early versions of ADOM.

Impressed with your speed. How'd you get it that low? You should be basically untouchable at that point.

Opportunity cost; your whole class is based around being ultra-punchy, and it seems wasteful to throw that away for the sake of a weapon that anybody could use.
>For witchlings, mostly because the spells allow you to overwhelm most enemies before they can even get close to you.

Yeah, it's about Shadow of the Wyrm. When's the last time you play? The dev has probably added a lot of things since then; he's certainly fixed a few bugs.
>Impressed with your speed. How'd you get it that low? You should be basically untouchable at that point.
Thieves get faster every 5 levels; he started at 55, went to 54 at level 5, 53 at level 10, and so on. Fae can get to 35, but they also only get to something like ~180 HP at level 50.

I'm an idiot and read your weapon speed as your total speed due to the combined screenshots. Whoops.

I'm more "offended" by the fact that it was an OBVIOUS fucking troll, yet the devs not only succumbed to his wishes but did it INSTANTLY.

The guys second post (>>166044930) is as much proof as you need of it.
