Trying to roll with the former and it's honestly not that bad. Settlements you can always recapture. The only time it's a real issue is when you lose a high level general over something stupid like the AI stack spamming or friendly fire.

In Shogun 2 I did it all the time because have full stacks landing away from all of your fucking troops was the most frustrating bullshit. I don't do it in warhams because there doesn't seem t obe a lot of frustrating shit in it.

You have to control the ocean in shogun 2.


What people don't realize is that you can at least patrol a section of ocean and could prevent fleets from going at you. but its hard if there's occupied islands behind you.

Warhammer doesn't have much of a naval game. and the ai doesn't seem to use ocean travel too much.

For me Kislev has been wiping Nordland and Ostland only to get Chaos rekt. But I let them be to take those blows for me.

Also right after claiming Sylvania from the Von Douchebags the Wood Reich attacks Tilea triggering WoodWar1. Dwarfs are being stingy with allying but we are at least trading and accessible.

Drawfs won the Badlands Bloodbowl so I have fought orcs only thrice in Sylvania.

I have similar rule sets. Empire LL's get a 3rd GS slot. Volkmar must use Tattersouls/Flagellant front line in lieu of swords. 2 RoR limit/army. Castellan-engineer can get up to 4 arty (not that spamming arty is an advantage). 1 Demi/army, lots of knights/reiks use.

I do same thing in other factions though sometimes I wish the AI would be more creative.

Greatswords are shock troops not frontline infantry, too many people try using them that way. They're basically up-armored flagellants. Tie up the enemy with Swordsmen and then smash their asses with Greatswords.

That said the Empire technology bonuses are such fucking trash. GS don't even get the meager +10 armor boost because reasons. And the even more meager +10% weapon damage is functionally another +1 to their weapon strength. Sad. #MEGA

You take Greatswords for their armor and morale. Unless they're up against shock cav or an explictly anti-armor unit they are cost and slot effective in the extreme.
They're not really shock troops either. I mean they're the best AP shock infantry option for the Empire, obviously. But they still don't do that much damage on the charge.

Their strength is that they do enough damage, survive for ages and don't break for ages.

There's a ton of different buildings which increase unit caps, I guess it's meant to show how no nation without proper infrastructure can support an endless stream of elite troops.
But since it is a mod it doesn't have the proper UI elements to reflect all this information, so you're building structures which will give you an increase to 0.5 units or some shit.

I think without these stupid caps the mod would be pretty fun.

They're the single best unit the Empire can field, though they do work slowly.
Have some aoe artillery, steam tank main cannon is just like a single great cannon, good but doesn't have the firepower of proper arty units.

Fending off a crusade on Cordoba, I met them on a bridge. Three stacks of crusaders, heavy knights and infantry from Poland, Britain, and France. Against one half stack of fresh Urban Militia and Christian Guard, and one full stack of cobbled together worn down veterans fresh from wars all over North Africa. I never managed to form a line that held, but every time they broke the line a unit that had previously fled rallied and got in the way to prevent them from fully spilling over the bridge. I still lost the battle, but they were down to about a half stack after the fact.

Armies requiring a general led to the fixed garrison system and being unable to move small numbers of troops around, which also probably led to the replenishment system being what it is (which is handy in some ways but needing to recruit and move units from distant settlements to replace them lended high value units more strategic importance). The system works better in Warhammer since the lords are a bit more involved than the generals from previous games and you're just limited by upkeep rather than an arbitrary cap anyway, but it hasn't been an improvement for the series overall.

Have you captured Marienburg? It has a port that gives 500, 1000 and 1500 gold per turn per level (at town level 1, 3 and 5).

Make your 2nd general a treasurer, in the politics menu button on the bottom right.

Build clothiers in every tiny town.

Built Altdorf college of magi, get balthasar gelt, leave him AFK in altdorf and make a load of mages there. Train each of them to grant tax income (bottom tree)

Don't bother with the clay building in Altdorf.

Castle Drakenhof has a gold mine which is 1k gold per turn, but is the vampire capital so is hard to take.

A massive coalition has formed against the Huns. Sassinids and third clients cross ERE lands to fight them and the WRE. WRE takes the brunt of the Hun's assault and incursions from Sassanids. Rome got nuked. Hun's are creeping in to my ERE territory and various Germanic move their forces against them.

I don't trust the Sassanids so I leave half my force on the eastern border. The rest for the inevitable Huns. Slavs encroach from the north.

Beastpath, Worldroots and the Underway should have been built into the map. Not just durr hurr skip this terrain obstruction whenever you feel like it. If CA did it like that then they could have been more unique and conferred more significant movement bonuses.

Could have a bunch of shit tied to them to make it more interesting and give a sense of actual progression instead of the lazy, exploitable gimmick it is now.

THQ's bankruptcy hurt them badly and they had to let go of a lot of people. Specifically everyone from the DoW team was laid off. They got bought up by SEGA and shuffled around some more. SEGA had them continue to whore out CoH2 for DLC. At some point SEGA was granted the license to 40K and Relic began work again on DoW3. But as far as I'm aware no one was brought back so it's all the CoH2 people working on it.

Anyway long story short, Relic is a shadow of it's former self. It's actually really sad and I hope for their sake DoW3 is great.

Shogun 2 if you want to be thrown in the deep end and come up for air in the best game.

Build garrison buildings in your settlements and/or keep a half stack in your territory to chase off raiders. If it's Beastmen/Chaos, it's worth swinging a full stack around to kill the horde, or if it's a faction with settlements, take all their settlements and they'll suicide rush a settlement to try and avoid dying to the attrition from having no home region.
