You are mistaking all factions for Empire.
No one wants to live in a tiny fragile world that physically manifests your every thought, unless they're batshit-insane half-robotic imperials. Even if you can extract nearly infinite amount of energy from the very surface of the world.

Anyway, keeping it thread-related, what would you actually do in such a game, if some group of drunken slavs were to make one.
For the sake of simplicity let's assume it shares the deepest lore somewhat with Perimeter, so nanomachines, chains of multiple big and tiny worlds, impenetrable energy barriers, morphing units and immense energy from terraformed surface.

I have (had) save with massive factory, it was so big I decided to cut out some bits from main plant and build them somewhere else. I had 160 steel furnaces for my iron alone.

I hope hdd didn't broke, maybe it just had bad day...
pls don't be broke i invested 8 full days into that save

Features
- Drone AI improvements (weapons handling, ambush behavior)
- Updated Block/Component models + icons
- Programmable Block Inter-Grid Communication Guide: http://forum.keenswh.com/threads/programmable-block-inter-grid-communication-guide.7392031/
- Warning for modders: http://forum.keenswh.com/threads/warning-potentially-breaking-changes-next-week.7392032/

Fixes
- corrected air-tight properties for merge block, timer block and oxygen generator
- added message indicating selected block not available for a grid size
- added an email option to the crash message window
- updated construction models for small grid armor blocks
- minor material change for Gravity Generator
- fixed AI drones shooting without target in line of sight
- fixed not being able to use cockpit for small grid from the front
- fixed climbing invisible stairs when jumping outside of gravity well
- fixed LCD Panel Text losing Glow when recoloring Panel
- fixed refactor pilot attaching to cockpit
- fixed Voxel Hand and Teleportation security for server side
- fixed Visual Scripting Campaign issues
- fixed being able to use handbrake while not in main cockpit

We're also pleased to announce that the single most requested feature for programmable blocks is here. We said it wasn't going to happen, but programmable blocks now have the ability to communicate between grids. This means you can open the hangar door from your fighter, or even trigger self destruct remotely. We're very excited to see what the community can create with this! Check our forums for a guide on this new feature.

Wheels kinda work actually.
>>
>>166055140
Somebody needs to hack together a bastardized CANBUS implementation, post fucking haste. I welcome our drone overlords. Conquering a planet from the bridge of a command cruiser is now possible.

In theory.
>>
>>166055520
Does the thicker axel actually do anything, or is it just visual?

Also, rest of the update announcement and link:

This week’s update contains more improvements and tweaks for block models. For example, axles on all wheel suspension blocks have been made thicker which makes wheeled vehicles look much sturdier. There’s been changes to the air-tightness of some blocks. This includes the merge block, timer block and oxygen generator now being airtight from all sides. Also, some block icons and all component icons have been updated.

New behaviors have been added to drone AI which can be accessed via the visual scripting tool. Firstly, there's now expanded possibilities with how drones handle weapons. You can set up which weapons they can use, how often they use them and whether they check for obstacles, be it grids or voxels, before firing. For example they could be setup to not use rocket launchers unless the player is hidden behind voxels. Secondly, you can activate a new ambush behavior. This will make a drone wait until it’s actually able to shoot a target before engaging. Please continue to give feedback on the visual scripting tool as we really want to maximize it’s potential.

exept from the offset, you can change the rest on the fly again, and to update the offset, you need to lock-unlock the wheel, and that didnt worked before at all.
Lateral friction not working as it should is still a thing, and can flip you even with low values like 15%, like when the rim eat the dirt IRL cars and start the roll, and still with small stuff it start to shake and go crazy because gyroscopic forces from the wheel it self.

>>166055843
its not a power thing, it happens also with projections to make quick release missiles, and the big one didnt need power, never did.
Pic related is the reason for all of this.

Nah man that's old tech, there are literally little rockets in the game now.

>Conquering a planet
What's to gain?
Compared to planets, asteroids provide vastly more ore which is significantly more accessible.
Adding the poor ore availability, natural gravity is a nuisance and a hazard.
Space is where it's at.

i'm still a complete beginner so i still feel good about simply setting up the main resource path
not sure if this is optimal but i do coal and ore in the middle on red belts, with 12 steel furnaces on each side, then have them deposit the plates outwards
i put several of these setupts in a row which makes for double filled output belts, i make it so there are four of those. the edges are only single filled. i use the edges of copper and iron to make circuits which then leave the base in the same manner as the rest of the plates, i also put up a little research area for red and green that will get filled to the brim and thus not really drain any resources while making my base look cooler
for steel i do ore and coal in the middle, furnace into furnace, steel and coal on the edge, split off at the end of smelting line so that only the steel gets further through
i've recently set up a plastic area with ten chemical plants on each side,
but i have no idea what to do with these things now that i have it all set up so i can easily draw from any of them

The bug walker alone is not hard, and im thinking on how to do it properly.
Spengos vanilla weapons are shit, so there wont be any cannon like that one, and with it, the entire turret have the same fate.
And with the rolling wheels you have the spacing issue at folding stuff, you end up using 2x1 slopes and makes it very weak.
For spengos there are better solutions to the issue.

This talk of Spengies and moving parts exploding reminds of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlDQEYxrXbY I found and was watching last night. It's from like two weeks ago, but the guy was testing out some way older creations on stream, and was surprised at how many of them worked like they should now when he couldn't get them to work as intended when they were created. He had some problems with wheels falling off though, but everything else seemed alright for the most part.

Blueprints changed with the pass of time.
All blueprints after the update 1.136 were fucked both in locked rotors being pasted detached, and wheels started to fall off randomly, that later got partially fixed, but those blueprints are fucked up forever, same goes with others, but for different reasons, those showed a reference of why blueprints could be fucked up and built stuff could work.

you know what I really want to see? A game where you can have giant air ship battles like in Karl Schroeder's Virga series. Virga is a giant bag of air floating in space lit up with artificial suns. Because it's just a big bag of gas, gravity is effectively zero. Oh and it has an 'electricity don't work right field' built by the space amish to prevent post-singular AIs from fucking shit up.

People harvest wood from the trees that cling to asteroids and use the lumber to build ring-shaped settlements which they spin up with bicycles to create local gravity, which prevents them from atrophying into horrific, misshapen spindly monsters. They lash these together to make nation states, and light them with smaller artificial suns that they light by means of miniatures of the artificial sun, which they light by following a recipe whose origin is lost to fable.

They build navies of ships that ply the low-gravity spaces between the nations and they wage glorious, weird, amazing wars in those spaces, with kerosene-powered rockets and rifles and sabers.

What does this mean? It means giant steampunk air battleships made of wood, concrete, and steel, powered by jet engines, shooting rockets at each other, dodging through three-dimensional towns and clouds of debris.

I suspect it wouldn't be too hard to mod FtD to allow this.

>>
>>166089813
Reportedly ftd multiplayer is a burden that slows development to a crawl. A single player spinoff allows rapid implementation of experimental features that may or may not get ported to ftd without pissing off the ftd playerbase.
>>
>>166090285
Multiplayer in ftd is trash anyway so I have no idea why anyone would care.

Spengies multiplayer isn't much better but some would argue it's the core of the game.

Ftd multiplayer is crude but has potential to be good. Most of the publicity is for the single player campaign so mp is neglected.

>Most of the publicity is for the single player campaign so mp is neglected.
Whole reason I bought it was the promise of multiplayer.

Hell, I ran the first "large scale" multiplayer match, which nick commented on and asked how I loaded in how many ships.
>>
>>166091230
I also bought it on the assumption that multiplayer would improve. Is there a video of this match?

I can sort of see where he's coming from, He's got a lot of sid-meir civilization style ideas and a single player test-bed lets him see what works and what doesn't for much less effort without another resource unification incident.

Well, I was never a fanboy, for one, and it wasn't a couple of weeks. It was months and months. But it was mostly burnout, and desperately scraping through the game to find something fun and interesting after the last. I eventually ran out of fun things to do with a small scale of shit and asked for some features to be implemented.

The absolute madman actually did implement one I asked for personally, the "Minimum FPS" option, but that's about it. I just got tired of the bullshit and the terrible performance. More stuff kept piling up over time and my vehemence increased with it.

Only recently was ground based stuff even possible, and he's managed to make that an exhausting slog as well. Don't even get me started on the passive aggressive tone of the tutorials, and how if you do them in game they dump shit on what you're working on from the sky.

I guess I've kind of been getting the same feels from FtD recently. I really like the concept, liked it from the first video I saw of the game. Spent over 300 hours playing it.

But after slugging through the campaign about 1.5 times, building all kinds of vehicles, fixing them for balance and mechanics changes, having great fun turning boats into flying gunships, I just can't put up with all the issues anymore. Everything about this game is so damn unpolished and inconsistent that I'm starting to wonder if it's even possible to fix the mess with the developer resources available to the project.

And that last part really turns me off from investing any more time into my blocky botes.

Anyone do anything cool with circuit networks in Factorio?

Just put together this, basically sums together how much is in each of the chest buffers, then compares them to each other, then closes all but the most empty stop.

There's probably a better way to do this, but this works.

I love playing weird vs matches in From the Depths though. Shit like, Okay: flying vessels made only of wood under 20,000 cost, with no jets. 20 minutes to build, GO!

Retrofired Marauder, 15 minutes to build, must be recognizable as a Marauder. GO!

And then we load them into multiplier and fuck around fighting one another. Shit's fun.

Closest you can really get in vanilla is doing these sort of staggered slopes, where you do a 1x2 and then put in increasing amounts of cube blocks in between each set of slopes.

It looks okay if you keep it to one or two blocks, any more than that and it just looks off.

back when I played it, that's what made it so fun.

Pre-gps, me and a friend made a base far from any asteroids near the map edge. We would align to it using stars in the skybox. The whole thing was rigged to move in case of discovery. Facing towards the centre beacon we erected a huge, pitch black shield to hide the shinier parts inside.
+ hidden stockpiles for rebuilding
+ frequent blueprinting of our main structures
etc
>>
>>166153008
You can set up your ship to move and blind jump when you afk. Multiple jump drives are a must.
I used to sit on earth and hunt down new players when they first start out until the admins yelled at me. Nothing like sticking 20k worth of explosives in multiple stacks on a large grid, small cargo container and ramming it into a lander. The newbie tears are sweet.

Warbros was nice because it was a "Hey don't be dicks unless all parties involved are cool with being/getting dick"

the problem with spergos "pvp" is that unless you are really invested in weapons R&D, fights just boil down to "whoever runs out of dakka first becomes the dakka," and in servers lacking gentlemen's agreements of "don't dicks" your ONLY offline defense from shitters who will just camp your base's guns until you're out of ammo is to not be found.

Granted you could just go with >>166153435 and have everything be mobile, but then you have a fuckhueg moving grid that most servers would delet because too many blocks

what?
>>
>>166157867
Alright then
First, make sure both the turret and weapon are set to the same control group. Press Q on the turret block and cannon firing piece and make sure they're assigned to the same group number. [1, 2, 3, whatever]
Then you'll want a Fire Control Computer somewhere near where your character is supposed to sit. This allows you to control any weapon group on the vehicle as long as you're near the computer. You need this because both turrets and weapons have a limited area from which you'd be able to control them normally
Then you can select the weapon group you assigned them to and that should allow you to aim and fire

AIs will pretty much always be better for aiming and firing weapons, and they aren't too hard to set up when you know a bit more

>>
>>166168163
Thee aren't any good guides I'm aware of, certainly none that have 'engine ratios' whatever that is.

Making good engines is a game all in itself, for best results sometimes it's best to leave it to the engine builders who spend days doing all the trial and error for you so you can get on with the vehicle building.
>>
>>166168650
>how do i robots?
Build a roboport, power it and place robots in its inventory.
It will then provide robot service within its coverage.

>how many do i need
Depends how many you want to use.
If you've already automated the production of flying frames, then it's a small step to make sure there's always a surplus of bots.
Roboports can deliver information to the circuit network about the number of total and available robots, allowing you to set up a simple "make more bots if there's none available" system.

>but don't even know the difference between logistic and construction bots
They carry out their own respective jobs.
Logistics means "making sure shit is where it needs to be" (refer to logistics system tech icon) and construction means removing and placing buildings.
Construction robots also clear trees if they're marked for removal with deconstruction planner, and if repair packs are available, they'll also repair damaged objects.
Buildings can be placed as ghosts (consult your controls) or as blueprints.

Increasing min water depth helps to some degree but you can't really set it high enough to entirely stop the AI from randomly beaching itself.

Wild guess: It only affects the pathing plan seen in the map screen, and the AI pretty much ignores it when making smaller scale movements (like turning around).

I'm the wrong man to ask, but its shit like baby monitors. Anything with an ip address can be accessed, and if someone has access to your network, they have access to everything connected. Given you need to be quite foolish to not have an account password, its much easier to infect the android shit on the devices.

Some proprietary OS's on shit like fridges might be more secure, but usually not. Typically its just a reskinned android OS 3.1, which is hilariously easy to break into and hack. Even I can do it, and I don't know a damn line of code in any language.

What do you use to do so? The "entering" part seems (keyword: seems) quite trivial once you have access to the network, since a legit user can use his own phone's applet to make a toast, but i suspect that a "entering" with more creative intents doesn't exactly involve using the iToast app.
Then how is the "extra content"/payload/makethetoastplayrickastley installed?
>>
>>166200119
There are probably tools tailored for specific devices that scan huge numbers of ip's looking for the right targets and infecting them automotically through a known vulnerability.

Kind of like the tools that search the internet for open telnet ports.

Now you're asking questions I can't specifically answer. "Commercial" hacking tools are available if you know where to look for them. I can say they're not all that special, and mostly use inbuilt functions of windows or whatever OS you're using.

Aww. Guess i'll have to wait until September+5 or more years till i can make head or tail of what a decomplier will spit out when i give it one of such programs.
Then add another 10 or 20 years to actually understand what the lines of assembly actually mean
>>
>>166200440
No idea if such tools will still function, but its very likely given the manufacturers of such devices literally don't give a fuck.
>>
>>166200119
In many cases it's just a legit control interface mistakenly exposed to the device's internet connection. Some routers have had issues where their factory "backdoors" used to install and configure software were accidentally left open. If one knew exactly which TCP port to poke it would respond and present a root shell.

IIRC the severe DNS outage a few months ago was achieved by spamming key servers to oblivion using 10+ million hijacked Chinese-made IP cams (basically web/surveillance cams with built-in OS and webserver). That particular model was withdrawn from the market, but there are probably many more exploitable devices out there with plenty of processing power (thanks to modern system-on-a-chip devices) and access to fast WiFi for maximum DDoS raep.
>>
>>166200525
Considering the average complexity of programs is proportional with time (more time->more complex programs), even learning how a older one (ie: Melissa) works would be good.

effect is similar to quick boosting in Armored Core, particularly FA, and has the same restrictions. The balancing factor is that if you boost too much, you have to recharge the tank. Boost carelessly and you'll do so right into a wall. This kills the ship, in most cases. In the future you'll be able to add tanks to increase capacity, and generators to increase regen. Different gens will have different properties.

>>

Funny thing about Overed weapons was that they were basically useless in practice, particularly against players, similar to the stupidly oversized german wonder weapons in ww2.

You can make your ship in such a way where ANY weaponry would be too much for the systems to handle, but dedicated stupidly oversized weaponry isn't off the cards.

Space chainsaws are always an option.

>>166207226
Starmade has the advantage of being minecraft with easier building, due to not needing to physically jump around the environment. Abortion's building system is just clunky and requires a vast amount more fuckery, given its not just cubes.

FtD's building system is actually ideal for what it needs to do, once you learn that you're moving the cursor with every block.
>>
>>166207360
Yes but if you want to build large ships you're fucked because starmade and ftd don't support large blocks nor the ability to dynamically select, resize & copy/paste blocks like avorion does.

>dynamically select, resize & copy/paste blocks like avorion does.

You can copy/paste sections with the prefab tool in ftd, and starmade has some similar nonsense, but you're on the money with >dynamically select, resize

The fact you have to do that with EVERY block is where it gets clunky.

95% of problems with Linux arise because of drivers or you touched something while it was installing. Installing Linux, especially fucking Normiebuntu of all things, takes less time and is less of a headache than Wondows in nearly all cases.

I guarantee that if you took the ten minutes to reinstall it would have been fixed because you clearly fucked something up.

Changing your oil is quite a bit easier than figuring out why shit just stopped working.
At least with mechanical systems you can actually see the problem, in a computer it may be caused by anything, fucking hell i had one of the engine's warning light in my car's dasboard light up because of the battery rather than any problem with the engine itself.
>>
>>166218604

I prefer already knowing how to fix my problems. Trouble shooting Windows can be a fucking pain in the ass. Trouble shooting linux, or even OSX which I hate using, is much easier then Windows. Or maybe easier isn't the right word: less aggravating.

Being completely ignorant and googling windows problems? It's fucking Indian scam time.

Bring completely ignorant and googling linux problems? It's just give up time.

The real benefit to troubleshooting linux is that you have the freedom to fix your problems yourself. Something something doesn't read nested archive files after the last update?

Windows: File a bug report. Roll back to an earlier restore point. Figure out what KB effects you ( which is it's own kind of pain sometimes and easy others ). Mark that KB not to be installed. Everything works fine for a month. Some other update does the same thing. It repeats over and over again until you, foolishly, turn off updates all together and then a year later you are botnet.

Linux: File a bug report. Leave a message with the dev. He ignores you. You find the bug and fix it yourself. It doesn't compile. Spend a few hours scratching your head. Spend a few hours fixing that. Also something else needed changed along the way. Install a ton of dev libraries. Shit's fixed. Pin the affected package so it doesn't update. Send the fix to the dev. He ignores you. You are stuck on the old version until you feel like doing the same thing to the new version.

Really both OSes can be a fucking problem, it just depends on what kind of problems you want to deal with.

>rather than any problem with the engine itself.
I bought a car on auction, heal damage, without seeing it. The airbags didn't work. Computer said it was a bad connection in the driver's bad. I replaced the clock spring and airbag. The computer said it was fine but the system still didn't work or give errors.

The previous owner had replaced the clock in the dash with one two years newer. It looked exactly the same and appeared to work, but some of the pins on the connection wire were switched. This meant that that passenger airbag indicator light was not connected. This stopped the entire airbag system from working. It took me a month of tracing shit out the wiring harness to even come near figuring out the problem and then an entire day of fucking with those clocks to get one to work. I bought every single one at the local junk yard and only the one for the exact same year car had the correct pins going to the light. If that didn't work I'd have had to splice the wires.

>>166223785
To expand on this, I'd been theorizing about using CANBUS with existing methods for some time as Space CANBUS (SCANBUS?) based around the LCD screen tricks used by the fleet command script in order to implement a sort of 'crystal radio' system where you'd have to install mass produced units with merge blocks in order to communicate through these back to a base relay station to enable wide area communications. This update does away with that allowing antenna broadcasting to serve as a much more direct implementation of CANBUS as it exists in automotive applications, as well as the unreliability of the LCD screen method which could just quit at times.

With that alone you cant do much. If you want to wasd that shit there are walls of scripting to do that, Best example is the difference between the gyroscope force you have with the mouse, and the force you have with Q or E or any script, its not the same, and more with hardcoded shit like "if the thing dosent move, freeze it, forcing you to shake stuff sometimes to let the gyros kick in, and physics go back to live again.

Its not laziness, its being too broken that months of effort could be killed in a single update.

Look real neat, the kind of things that look odd as fuck from afar but is a wonder of engineering up close, a floating science center that can be anchored nearly anywhere in the oceans. Also it has no propulsion system, its literally just a inhabited huge ass buoy that can flip itself to make towing easier, surely as to leave as much place as possible for actual tools, detectors or whatnot. What particularly interest me is the inner structure of the boat, it must be shaped in quite an interesting shape as to insure the weight distribution between the two end, so the ship hull doesn't collapse under the pressure during the flip. Also the entire plumbing and pressure system must be one hell of a piece of work, given that part of the plumbing can be at surface level for a moment to be over a hundred feet under water the next.

By artillery you mean you want something with a high arc? If you want to hit something far away you need advanced cannons but good ones tend to fire low and flat

It does indeed. It's cheap and accurate enough to be not entirely shit. It's not .1 accurate like everyone keeps saying they need to be on the forums, but fuck that shit. .24 is fine.

I'm going to armor it up a bit, but I'm always trying to build campaign viable, so keeping costs down is good. Armament on this little sucker are those three double 120mm cannons (probably inertial HE, but I don't have a shell design yet), the aformentioned 48mm burst fire CIWS/AA guns, 6 of them and two torpedo launchers I affectionately call "The Duke"; which fires a fan of unguided explosive torpedos up to 4 km.

Ship is called "The Squire" and it's planned as an escort for larger ships if I can be assed to design anything bigger that doesn't suck eggs.

How do you get ciws to work though? I tried it before and by the time the turret had turned to face the missile it's already too late.
>>
>>166253258
How big is the turret? You might want to try a small and light turret on a 2-axis turret
>>
>>166253258
The most important thing to improve CIWS on-time is traverse and range.

If you look in my shot( >>166250151) the guns are tiny and light so they can turn very quickly. You'll also notice they have overlapping coverage; so that when they detect a missile more than one gun will be firing at volleys.

What CIWS does well is being dirt cheap as opposed to LAMS and, in the case of the kinetic guns like I have, being entirely non-explosive.

I work with 1axis on those because of the AA mantlet, but if you don't mind the loss in durability, lighter 2-axis models may be a better choice.
>>
>>166253085
Damn that's impressive. Even with 2d it's laggy as fuck in Algodoo. To have enough particles to simulate a river dam...

Though I guess because the water can occupy more positions than the basic voxels can, if I'm understanding it right.
>>
>>166253668
Ah, I forgot to mention; the longer range the guns have the more time they'll have to shoot, but that really doesn't count for my little guns. They're only effective to about 500m. Remember though that missiles will be coming to you, so you don't need to always be hitting them out at 1000m or greater; hitting them anywhere outside of 50m is good enough, though if you get hit closer you're at risk of taking damage from frags all the same.
>>
>>166253728
ah you looked it up? It has some interesting ideas, like how the player is made of tiny voxels with arteries and organs etc so the player avatar itself was a voxel minigame. Either that dev has a monster pc or it was pretty well made because it seems to run ok yeah.

You know that that thing will not produce more energy than it consumes? It's purely a science toy, as always with the public sector.

You should look into the private sector's solutions, they are actually designed to produce energy rather than being a oversized lab equipment for high energy plasma physics
>>
>>166285376
I didn't realize we had ones that could actually produce more energy than they consumed, I thought that it was still a highly experimental science.
>>
>>166285568
As of now they don't produce more than they consume.
Though the more "public ones" (tokamak, iter, stellaractor, etc) are designed to be less like reactors and more like science toys.

There is one design from a private company where they inject the fuel into a sphere of molten metal and slam a bunch of pistons to compress it and initiate fusion. That already has a way to harness the energy it produces (the reaction will push the pistons outwards)
>>
>>166285730
What's it called? or what's the company?
I'd be interested in seeing some of those.
>>
>>166285568
We don't, that's why we're building (we as in the human kind) the biggest Tokamak ever to produce the hottest temperatures in our solar system to finally one day have pure limitless energy.

While you can technically use any element atomically lighter than iron for fusion, Deuterium and Tritium are what the ITER is going to use. While Deuterium can be obtained from water, Tritium is rare on Earth, and needs to be synthesised. However, there are possible deposits of it on our Moon and on our gas giants too. While I'm not a nuclear physicist, I do have basic knowledge behind the process, so ask away if you need to.
>>166286475
Baby steps, baby steps my dear anon. Not everyone has 20 billion euro to spend on a project that might or might not work.
Them showing the fact that fusion reactors are safer than fission ones not only attracts investors, but is actually true. If the reactor was to "get out of control", break, or malfunction, the fusion process would just stop.
And the reason why they couldn't get energy back from the reactors so far is that they couldn't get them hot enough. Ergo that's why they are building a new, massive one to finally get some energy back.

Thanks for reading my blog post or something.
>>
>>166285913
It's well known from an unknown and unreliable source that big petrol companies are holding back non-dinosaur energy to milk as much oil money as possible, while also becoming the owners of the sci-fi engines when they become needed and useful.

It is also known from a similar source however that development of renewable energy is slow, and upgrades are hard to reach. Solar energy is far from great efficiency and has been like this for decades of research.
>>
>>166287046
Come to think of it, I wondered why they use tritium and deuterium instead of just 2x deuterium, since it should be able to combine into helium anyway?

And prior to (the) Mercury (program) we hadn't any real experience at all. We flew transport planes in parabolic courses that might give as much as 30 seconds of almost-zero-g, and that was all we knew. I will not soon forget some of our early low-g experiments. Some genius wanted to know how a cat oriented: visual cues, or a gravity sensor? The obvious way to find out was to take a cat up in an airplane, fly the plane in a parabolic orbit, and observe the cat during the short period of zero-g.

It made sense. Maybe. It didn't make enough that anyone would authorize a large airplane for the experiment, so a camera was mounted in a small fighter (perhaps a T-bird; I forget), and the cat was carried along in the pilot's lap. A movie was made of the whole run.

The film, I fear, doesn't tell us how a cat orients. It shows the pilot frantically trying to tear the cat off his arm, and the cat just as violently resisting. Eventually the cat was broken free and let go in mid-air, where it seemed magically (teleportation? or not really zero gravity in the plane? no one knows) to move, rapidly, straight back to the pilot, claws outstretched. This time there was no tearing it loose at all. The only thing I learned from the film is that cats (or this one anyway) don't like zero gravity, and think human beings are the obvious point of stability to cling to...

Well yeah, humans need to do that too without thrusters.
That's one of the reasons space stations are better tube-shaped instead of large open rooms.

Casual.
In fact, were there any experiments on flying avians in weightlessness?

but i mean, we can grab things and rotate our bodies into the orientation we want, and push off in the direction we want
something like a cat wouldn't be able to do these things, it'd only be able to push backwards

Kek, maybe the animals that would adapt better at zero gravity would be tiny insects like flies. They could cling to the walls, and if there's no wall, they could flap their wings until they hit something.
Spiders in zero gravity would be interesting to see too

By teach I mean I dont have any experience designing or building anything practical. So something that can fill that gap would be nice.

I'll check out the stuff you mentioned.

Animals aren't capable of thinking of momentum in 0g situations without being exposed to one, and like the cat talked about earlier they just panic when first put in one.
With a certain amount of exposure, pretty much any animal would eventually learn.

>>166302079
For some reason it's really hard to find anything about the results, but NASA's sent plenty of small insects/animals into space.
Spiders were able to build webs eventually, after presumably having no fucking clue what was happening for a while.

>Actual unethical experiment story here, complete with results:

My dad was a skydiver back in the sixties. There was a guy in his club that was a nut. He had the idea that he could test the axiom that "cats always land on their feet" from free fall altitude, where he would fall with them and observe their self-righting behavior. He had no interest in aiding their descent, just wanted to see how they behaved in free fall. In his plan, landing was the cats' problem, not his. Scientific impartiality, or some such thing.

He took four stray cats up in a pillowcase for the jump. After exiting the plane, he turned the pillowcase inside out, releasing the cats. To his great surprise, all four cats attached themselves to his body immediately. With their claws. Given that cats have 18 claws each, he was punctured at least 72 times. More, probably, because he struggled vainly to remove the cats as he fell, but they were having none of it, and would reattach with even more conviction with every effort he made to pull them off.

Presently, he was out of altitude, and had to turn his attention to opening the chute. Let's pause to do some math. A chute opening can generate as much as 3 Gs of force. The average cat weighs 8 lbs at 1 G. At three Gs, this becomes 24 lbs per cat. So when the chute opened, for a moment this guy had 72 razor sharp claws in his skin, each one being pulled down with a force of about one and a third pounds. That's 96 pounds of cat. He was sliced to ribbons, basically.

All four cats hung on through the chute opening, although the skydiver's shredded flesh allowed each one to slip several inches. Bleeding and in misery, the skydiver managed to make a safe, if rather rough, landing in a farm field.

As soon as he hit the earth, all four cats ran off across the field, leaving him to lie there bleeding from his hundred or so wounds.

He was the only member of the skydiving club that was displeased with the results of his experiment.

It just entered beta, but it's extremely limited.

Finding a good multiplayer server is hard (I don't even know if vg runs a server anymore) and there's basically zero PvE content so single player isn't really a good option.

>>
>>166315452
Well, sure, but that'll have more to do with custom turrets. What do you plan to do with ships once you've grabbed them?

>>166315778
Keep grabbing.

Harder.
>>
>>166315868
There's a limit to how hard you'd be able to squeeze with the structural mechanics. It'd be kinda like can opener in robot wars, which is a totally useless bot, so unless you grabbed some already banged up motherfucker or some dumb idiot who built a tin can, you'd be kinda hooped.

Unless we add some measure of magical forces that allow you to fuck them up harder, but that'd require panel and strut deformation to make work beyond just shattering on command, which I'm not entirely should would work at all well with multiplayer. We can make an effort, but it'll probably blow up.

>>
>>166316606
The reversed jaws of life are bretty gud, but that'd be kinda odd to see on a ship. So yeah, that can go in. It'd be heavy and unwieldy, and can just be shot out, but would be cool if you landed it.
>>
don't be silly, you can't use the jaws of life on a butthole
>>
>>166316825
Jaws of Death were the GOAT weapon. Sure, Killalot had to cripple the bot to land them, but once they were around you, your robot was done and gone. But yes, just essentially two durable bits of metal attached to the sturdiest possible rotating joint upon linear actuators set for the greatest possible mechanical advantage.

This kills the ship.

I had a setup that counted all the items I had in storage, then activated a small, modular factory to produce an item if I fell below a certain amount. For instance, if I had below one chest of blue circuits, red and green circuits would start loading on the master belt, while the factories alongside the belt would start drawing them from the main belt. When the quota for blue circuits was reached, the mass storage relay would stop placing items on the belt, and the factory would shut off, allowing the uncollected items to eventually sift through the factory and arrive at storage again. Everything outside of the modular factories used the mainbelt, which was a semi-continuous loop that began and ended at mass storage.

I eventually replaced the mainbelt with a series of locomotives time to make runs between each modular factory and mass storage every half minute or so, allowing for a larger amount of items to be transported in a smaller amount of time with more precise counts, at the cost of coal.
>>
>>166317089
That sounds utterly horrifying to watch. Especially considering some of the ways your ship can be temporarily disabled, given the resource system going in soon, with weapons specifically designed to stun such as em-bombs.

I love it.
