Just copy a lot of different things and identify reusable modules (i.e. a shape or a combination of rooms). If you copied enough and have enough modules, creativity is just a matter of recombining and varying those modules.

One of the breweries here just makes an American Pale Ale that is relatively cheap and still tastes decent.
I have visited america, however, and the big brands taste like mediocrity as I believe is the case almost everywhere.

I have no suggestions for embarking, but I do advise you that if there's too much savagery in the world there might not be enough non-savage places for dwarves, humans, and maybe goblins and kobolds to live. Elves don't mind savagery, and their jungle empires can become unstoppable juggernauts of endless elf flesh in worldgen, possibly wiping out all of the few other civilizations before you start playing.

Just something you need to be careful about. Also, too many extra beasts also can wipe out civs.

This is strange.
I didn't even know I had a named dog in my fort. I suppose it could be a dwarf's pet, but I can only find one in my livestock list and it has a different name. I certainly haven't gotten a death notification for any named animals.
What's stranger, though, is that it doesn't say that it relates to the killing of an ostrich hen. It says it relates to the slaughter of an ostrich hen. As in, taken to the butcher shop and turned into meat and meat accessories. Which dogs, fictional or not, can't do.
I'm kind of confused. But also more pleased than I ought to be.

No, depictions of deaths in combat are described as "the killing of..." and butchering is described as "the slaughter of...". Besides, the joy in slaughter thought hasn't been a thing for a couple of years now, and dogs didn't have the tag to be able to get it when it was a thing. And the way an event shows up in the thoughts and prefs screen doesn't influence how it appears in legends anyhow. Furthermore, every ostrich that has ever entered my map has been cage trapped and trained.

Well, either the dog killed it in combat and it got recorded as being butchered for some reason, or it was butchered and the wrong histfig got credit for it.

It's not possible to butcher something without a tool, claws and teeth do not work.

They're also listed as "struck down" or whatnot if it was anything that a dog could do.

Make sure you save beforehand and look at the description of an item to load the art_image_chunks list properly.

Yeah, I suspect the latter case. My guess is they fought while the ostrich was on its way to the cage trap, and when the ostrich was later slaughtered the dog got credit because it had wounded the ostrich. Maybe some kind of conflict flag that ought to have been cleared when they stopped fighting was short circuited by the ostrich being chased into a cage trap. Or something like that. When a creature bleeds out from severe wounds, whatever was responsible for those wounds will end up getting credit for the kill, so it's not much of a stretch.

A guy I know who did real martial art got a training like that, except he hit himself with baton all over until he couldn't do it anymore, just to do the same the next day. And it worked pretty well, his bones had become solid like stone but alas many of his joints were destroyed, like to the extant that his metacarpophalangeal joints formed a flat line instead of the normal shape.

There's never going to be an uncounterable threat in DF. If you know how to counter every threat, the game becomes easy. It doesn't matter how much more "difficult" the game becomes. The only thing that will make the game hard for skilled players is arbitrary loss conditions. Like in the early versions when mining adamantine would trigger periodic rng checks to just show you a game over screen. Toady removed that for a reason. Anything else will just be problems that any player with the proper knowledge can employ a solution to. Just like it is now.

Taverns aren't pointless. They fulfil many important needs for your dwarves. They also attract mercenaries, which can be hired in both game modes (as long term visitors in fort mode, and companions in adv mode). They are also the only place in which you can find booze in adv mode.

As for the trees, climbing them is pretty fun, and also useful for crossing rivers (although jumping will also help). Being able to gather all kinds of different IRL fruits and use them for cooking and brewing is comfy as heck, too.

Are you sure you shouldn't be playing some generic tower defence game instead? You definitly aren't interesting in the aspects which set DF apart from other simulation games.

I don't disagree with the sentiment of your post, I'm just arguing that it won't make the game hard for experienced players. New threats will creep into the game over a period of years, whereas the players will adapt to them much more quickly. For example, when climbing and jumping was introduced it wasn't even a week before "just build an overhang and cut trees away from your walls" became the standardized counter. And even then it was already old hat to those of us who'd sussed out the mechanics of it on the first day. Magic will probably take longer, of course, but the range of ways it can kill your fort will probably be pretty well known within a month or so of release. Then it will just be a matter of prep and execution, as always.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. As a story generation tool, a fort that succeeds has a lot more room to serve its purpose than a fort that doesn't. The people who seem to think that DF should be about starting a fort and then watching it get torn apart by goblins or monsters by the end of the day are missing the point.

That's not an argument. There are minute aspects of the combat system that aren't well understood, but by and large it's been solved down to the precise formulae governing every combat interaction. Even before that was the case, the mechanics were well known enough that players could eliminate nearly every bit of the danger that the rng introduced with skillful play. The myth/magic arc won't change that, and we won't need to know every under-the-hood variable of myth generation to be able to adapt to their macroexpressions in game worlds.

This clarificacion is needed, because you would actually have to get out of your way, have something far away from curiosity, to know how to play the game the best way possible in that hipothetical future version
Let me explain
In my past example, I talked about worlds that were giant organs from an hipothetical god, and how the game worked up his way to become coherent to that premise, creating new mechanics

For something like that to happen, the game'd need to have an enormous database detailing objects, phisical and conceptual, and their relations between them, so the game can properly process the fact that the gastrointestinal moves of a giant macro-tile organ would be perceived as earthquakes for the creatures living in it.

Of course, players would find information and categorize it, and problems would be solved, no doubt. But you cant really foresee all things that can happen in that hipothetical random world
More so, if the game doesnt give you all the information directly, and people have to look it up on the game files

My point is that, the fact that worlds will get more complex over time, with us the players not changing over time, will make the game more unpredictable that it actually is, in a certain ammount
Gone to that point, if you memorice copious ammounts of information for the sole purpose of knowing how the game can be beaten, and then complain about the lack of difficulty, then it's your fault.

As for the rest, cave ins are still a thing, the old system simply could translate to 3d. And I'm playing on a 90+z completely sheer cliff. All of my last 4 forts were on sheer cliffs in excess of 30z, and most of my forts in the past 5 years prior to those were either on sheer cliffs or on slopes so steep that they would be described as cliffs irl.

A couple threads ago someone mentioned wanting to run a few years worth of history between forts, instead of the standard 14 days. I poked around a bit and it turned out to be pretty easy. All you have to do is, while that calendar screen is up for the normal 14-day thing, open the editor:

Then adjust "year" and "year_tick" to set when you want it to stop. Close the editor and the calendar screen will keep running history until it gets to the point you chose.

Holy shit Dwarf Fortress shocked me. I’m 15 minutes in and was not prepared at ALL. I figured with the “Dwarf Fortress is a history simulator” and “Dwarf Fortress is for autists” memes that it would obviously be somewhere in between but I did not expect to get so immediately drawn in.

Minecraft was comfy. It set an atmosphere and had attention to detail that made me attached to the blocks and setting.
RimWorld was engaging. Despite the numerous shenanigans it had a way of telling the story that made it a good, not great, game.
My first impression of is that it’s just fucking FUN. Makes no sense and will probably jump around too much to make sense plotwise, but I can’t get rid of this wide grin on my face, nor do I want to.

Please tell me that that is the kind of ride I’m in for, because I don’t want it to stop. The setting is not as good as Minecraft and the storytelling is not as good as RimWorld, but regardless of that I am thoroughly enjoying myself because of how well it pulls off making utter nonsense seem like a good time.

I'm trying to build a wooden wall around the entrance to my fort for early protection, but it seems that one of my dwarves has climbed onto the second story of the wall, stopped building, and is listed as having no job. He also won't get down when I set other jobs like putting doors and beds down. Do I need to put a ramp up or something so that he can climb down, or what? If you're just using the wall to make sure that the enemy walks a certain path (in order to force them to meet your army face on, for example), then a simple one level wall will do.

Dfhack and rapist aren't related at all. There is no version of dfhack that includes the rapist, alpha or otherwise. Dfhack has its own version that can be accessed from within the game on the units screen called dwarf manipulator. It doesn't have all the features of the rapist, but performs the same central function.
I've been using the latest alpha for a little while now without any issues.

That's done by a dfhack plugin called text will be text (twbt). You'll notice that on your LNP dashboard that your print mode is TWBT. It isn't updated for the current version of dfhack yet. You're really better off without it, though. Since its release it's been the single biggest source of instability in DF. The symbols that are shared are rare enough that by the end of a single play session you'll know what is what just from context.

I was about to say no, but I modded my woods out the ass, and the multicolor stuff was a very nice idea from one of you fuckers.

Persimmons are the same family as ebony, so I just made that ebony wood, I think tea trees are similar to greenheart, I forget which one I did purpleheart, and though maple isn't really that red I went ahead and made it the darker red, turned blood thorn up into bright red, fixed larch and birch properly so they're white, I made a couple of the lighter woods yellow, and something else gray but again, can't remember which one. It's really nice though.

One of these towns around here had greenheart and purpleheart buildings but I can't find it now.

I'm pretty sure elves are the only race in vanilla that can live in savage biomes and goblins likewise in evil biomes, but I assumed that would just be controlled by a tag in their entity definitions, which it doesn't appear to be, to my untrained eyes.

As you can see, leggings and high boots do not overlap (except for fingers on feet) so yeah, equip both
They already weight too much, so if they have atleast some armor ability, they should do fine
Also, a dwarf can atack with a severed or nerve-damaged arm, but if you lose a foot, leg or whatever in battle, you will be crawling until you get a crutch, and that can be a bad thing in a fight

Assigning clothes into the uniform makes the problem worse actually. They'll start going entirely without clothing or armor because they wanted to put on a specific sock, but someone else got to it first, so rather than grab a different sock, they'll just take off all their clothes and armor and train naked except for their weapons, provisions and a single sock.
And of course every time you give them a military order, they'll have to double check to make sure that they have the best possible gear equipped, which means if you tell them to kill a forgotten beast and one of them notices a *pig tail cloak* that's better than his -pig tail cloak-, he'll strip naked so he can reequip everything, this time including the better cloak.
The same bug exists with armor, but it doesn't come into play as often because you don't usually need to make armor for every single dwarf in your fortress.

The first part of your post isn't how it works; two dwarves can't pick the same piece to wear. Any dwarf picking a piece to equip removes that piece from the pool that every other dwarf has to pick from. It's exactly the same as objects in a workshop showing TSK when they've been selected for a job. In fact, if clothes or armor are still in their workshop when they're chosen for a 'pickup equipment' job they will show TSK just like any other object would.
You're not exactly wrong about the rest, but since military dwarves get dibs on the best equipment, there'll usually only be a narrow window when you're producing better gear than they already have. After that they'll just be replacing things with X wear levels. And you can get around that too by producing a specific thing just for your military (e.g. specify turkey leather cloaks in their uniform) and making it to order.
Nearly every problem with military equipping is the result of player error.

That picture actually has a later solution I found because if you do this with any storage items like cabinets then everybody rushes around storing items in them endlessly, so I made little personal nooks with a cabinet/table/bed and set each door to internal > expanded the room > set back to external and did the next.
