I'm a huge Telliusfag and even I can still see all the flaws in RD, it surprises me that people give so much hate to Awakening in comparison. I installed "Fire Emblem Fates" from freeshop. I presume this means its the 3-in-1 version. But it doesn't seem to have any updates or DLC. Is this correct? If its right I can only imagine there is some alternate way of getting the map packs.

It's mild to the point of being excruciatingly boring, it's the only Fire Emblem game I never finished all the way through. Even on hard without minmaxing all my characters turned into broken unbeatable death machines and all the maps are just huge open fields with rout, it's boring as fuck. The awful balance. Characters aren't balanced well in terms of both strenght and chapter availability so despite the huge roster, players tend to end up using the same characters. Like with minmaxers you expect it because they'll focus on the best character, but even through normal play you'll likely end up using the same characters as other players because of how it set you up to use certain characters over others.

Most FE games are like that, it's only such a big problem in RD because the game is split into four different parts with their own roster of characters that constantly leave and rejoin for the purposes of the story, so availability is a huge issue and you always end up using the same people every time you play.

FFXV went through like 15 years of development hell with the writers and leads and producers all changing constantly. Fates has no excuse, it's just incompetent writing. But Awakening sold great, so they didn't really need to throw as much effort in to Fates.

To me that's FE's strength. Write simple characters that everyone can recognize and connect to and flesh them out more in supports.

Awakening did that GREAT actually. I loved Vaike and Sully because they look like just typical anime stereotypes but there's actually more to them than I thought. Now Awakening still had its one trick ponies, like Kellam or Miriel but they were definitely a minority.

Fates I get the feeing like they weren't trying to make them as gimmicky, but they just ended up boring. Then Treehouse tried to "fix" it and we got Meme Effie and Pickle Hisame.

With Awakening, as cringy as Vallidar and Grima were, you could tell the were trying so hard to make these memorable villains, and in my opinion, did pretty good with Gangrel and Walhart. With Fates the story just felt so much more contrived. Like how the entire conflict for the first half of Revalations was because Corrin and Azura literally couldn't just say what the problem was because of an arbitrary "curse."

Chrom's weren't exactly great either. The only support of his I really enjoyed was Vaikes actually.

Not saying all of the supports were amazing, but there were a bunch of characters that I thought I could summarize in one word, and was surprised when they treated them with more respect.

I like how Virion is all full of himself, but he does have moments where he just decides to be nice and that he's smarter than he looks. I like how Sully's backstory isn't the simple "I want to be stronger than men" that I've come to recognize and hate. I like how Donnel, a stand out farm kid, has ways to legitimately interact with all these mercenaries and royals.

I'm playing Fates for the first time and started with Birthright. If we're talking about writing, here's what bothers me about the game so far because it's fresh in my mind.

I don't know if he's actually dead or not because I'm still playing through the game but the way the characters never mention it bothers me. Your avatar just mentions it once while attacking someone (I think Xander) but otherwise doesn't seem to care, it's especially glaring right after Lilith saves you because she takes you in a different world and tells you to rest? HELLO? Neither of you care the other guy died? Flora never mentions it either.

I'm playing through Conquest, it's pretty much the same deal. It's pretty clear they made a rough outline of where the story would go, and then everyone just does whatever the plot needs them to do regardless of how it fits their characterization. Especially in a series like Fire Emblem, which before the 3DS games had a focus on strong character writing and dialog, that's the worst way to write a story. The plot should serve the characters, not the other way around.

There are many reasons in both Conquest and Rev. that Nyx is Sophia 0.5.
In conquest she's just a glass canon who joins at a time where you can't take such a risk.
Rev is where she is really bad. She joins six chapters later with the exact same stats, and only Fire. What's more, Shura joins in the exact same chapter, with Birthright stats and B-Rank bows, C Rank staves.
Also, magic in Fates is overall absolutely worthless, with only Leo, Ophelia, and Elise (if you're willing to take tons of risk) being able to use it without being a witch.

He's living the life, being a lordly vigilante because he has a gift for swordsmanship while his sister doesn't. He has no obligations beyond wielding the Falchion, which he happily does to protect the common folk. He's clearing the weapon's name after its misuse by his father, while Emm is doing the same to the halidom. They both do what they excel at.

He doesn't have enough confidence to rule. He never really thought about how he would rule Ylisse because he took Emm for granted in her handling of politics and bureocracy while he pranced around the country with his band of merry men righting wrongs. He is NOT prepared for Emm's death, and when he gets over grieving for her, he starts grieving for what her death left him. Even with everyone's support, rulership is something that never interested him, and now he suddenly has to take the reins.

Everyone's used to the confident and passionate Chrom, so that's the mask he keeps up. But to his wife/Robin he shows how he's truly feeling. He doesn't care for the posturing and diplomacy and wishes he could just go on adventures again.

Lucina's prophecy of the future only leaves him more worried. However, the war against Walhart helps clear his mind. He sees that Walhart rules how he wishes he could rule: always take action. If someone is an annoyance, meet them in battle and let skill decide. And he sees how the people are subjugated and forced to fight. He knows that if he follows that path, he'll end up like his father. This he has to personally confront what he sees as himself gone wrong: Walhart.

No idea what I'd do with him after that, though. It's hard to not make the whole Grima stuff be about Robin when their father and alternate self are both central characters.
