ROTK is a quality empire sim franchise; that was indirectly cited as an inspiration for original M&B (via KOEI games in general), so it is actually a shame that there isn't a quality ROTK mod.

Bannerlord should at the very least copy the empire management interfaces (like the ability to make lord assignments on a map interface or reorganize lord lists) and the ability to create characters and factions without needing to mod the game.

With ROTK's >600 lords that span roughly 3-4 generations it can handle executions and coups.

What would be great is if Marshall coups could potentially influence an entire region rather than their direct holdings. ROTK has a similar position; such as ROTK 11 's "Viceroy", where you could basically create a sub-kingdom within your own kingdom (by assigning the viceroy lords and fiefs to delegate) and assign their policy (namely defense, domestic, and aggression against a specific faction IIRC).

Bannerlord's kingdom aspect could benefit a lot if they borrowed some ideas from KOEI's sims.

The best way to do it imo is to enlist with the ruler of a faction so that you can advance really quickly by participating in the tournaments when they host a feast. I wouldn't exactly call it really fun, but it is a very efficient way to increase you relation with the ruler, get some easy cash, and get really high tier armor.

ROTK 11 is a solid game. I haven't been able to play ROTK13 yet (in my backlog) but it seems to have similar complaints to ROTK12 in that the battles are too streamlined and simple. One other thing to note is that the premises of the two games is very different: ROTK11 is a pure Empire Sim game (that you can play as king game with some imagination) whereas ROTK13 is designed as a RP sim game with Empire Sim elements (notably you can play as an officer).

Nobunga's Ambition: Iron Triangle is great as is ROTK9 which has similar real time overworld mechanics.

Aside from the setting the KOEI empire sim games tend to be pretty different. KOEI really tries to mix it up between games.

While Freelancer is a nice novelty and can sometimes be meta to get good equipment early in some mods it tends to be terribly inefficient and can screw your character over if you accidentally desert or your lord gets captured as a prisoner.

Shu were the last vestigates of the carcass that was the Han empire and while they are overrated in many ways they did rebound remarkably at around the time they conquered Han Zhong from Wei and peaked during Guan Yu's initial invasion.

Wu developed the then undeveloped Southern China into an economic powerhouse; starting the string of "Southern Dynasties" and most combat was historically between Wu and Wei in the later era. When Jin got overwhelmed by northern barbarians they basically retreated to Wu's former lands and became Wu 2.0

While Jin ended up unifying China in the end it was a laughably short unification such that it is barely a footnote of the period.

Since the setting reached a deadlock due to the three factions being unable to beat each other it also makes for a good game setting.

Competent maybe but Wu still suffered a crushing military defeat once Jin had stabilised the take over.

Hypothetically speaking if they had somehow managed to survive long enough for Jin to fuck themselves up they would have won, but for that to happen both their leadership and the prospects of their nation in pretty much every category would have needed to be much better in the first place and drastic changes would have needed to have taken place decades before. Wu had already lost the war of the three kingdoms before Jin took over.

They didn't attack immediately after being established because it was a literal coup, there's shit you need to do. Then the invasion had to be planned out and prepared for, which was a pretty big deal seeing as the final plan was a 6 front assault on Wu to finally wipe them out for good. And then the actual invasion itself was only a year long and a pretty large chunk of Wu defected rather then fight at all, to the point where the last Sun just gave up.

Deciding to not piss around with your last actual obstacle to uniting China after your clan spends decades planning a coup and throwing an overwhelming force at the enemy who then utterly disintegrate is far from the idea of Wu still being a strong independent nation state that was a major threat. Wu had already lost before the invasion had even begun. You can make hypothetical situations where they wouldn't have been in such a poor state but the changes involved would be pretty significant.

I sure love the gameplay changes in M&B:B.

I honestly couldn't play M&B:W. Battles were too difficult, I am glad they put a regenerating health feature.
Plus it's better now that you can only use sword and shield, the other weapons were too confusing and awfully designed.

And it's also much better now that there's only a single player linear campaign. I never knew what to do in the old game, too much freedom is bad.

With my empire growing I am going to have to change policy in how I deal with 100 locked lords. With 135 max devoted lords; 66 presently under my employ, the 111 towns and +200 castles are going to have to be split quite a bit more leniently. So a dramatic policy shift:

1) All towns and it's associated villages will be owned by a lord
2) All castles in proximity to the town will be owned by the lord with villages kept unoccupied for whining lords
3) If a lord has high renown they may be assigned multiple towns
4) Lords of the starting territories; especially castle only lords, are initially exempt of the proximity rule within reason

I suppose Lords like Joao will very soon be pretty common

My initial intention was to query everyone which lord of theirs has a high number of fiefs. Then I realized there are probably plenty of lazy players who just give all of their lands to a single devoted lord so maybe this isn't unique at all. So it just became a show and tell.

Although I am kind of curious just how many fief heavy lords some players have. Especially if this is part of their normal play and not them being contrarian.

As a stray sleepy thought I also wonder if anyone knows if Husband (of female players) relations is locked at 100 or if it is possible for the husband to defect. Easy mode would theoretically be to just give all castle and towns to your husband so that you not only have an eternally devoted Lord but one whom you also have full garrison control over.

Why is co-op even under consideration? This has some pretty severe core design changes outside of something basic like co-op in custom battles (which is already done in multiplayer). The only way it could be theoretically feasible is something like this:

1) Pause function disabled in world map in all contexts. Inventory, party screen, character reports, and all other menus do not freeze time. (Player would likely have to do compound tasks in castles/towns else be ambushed)

2) Disable fast forward function on map

3a) When the player is in-combat the world map does not stop.

3b alt) All players not directly involved in combat can choose which side and later which soldier they want to control. Afterwards it functions like battle continuation mod on death.

Lack of fast forward on the map would kill the game for me.

Not having the world map freeze when the player is in combat would be great even without co-op. This way the player is functioning on similar rules to the AI and enemies (and allies) can receive reinforcements mid battle.

You do realize that either way there is going to be excessive downtime of inactivity right? Aside from nuance nothing functionally changes from the non-host's perspective. Since all you are doing collaboratively is essentially combat (because aimlessly wandering around villages/castles/towns is SO FUN, especially when the other players can't initiate interactions!) why should they bother creating a half-ass co-op feature that can have all of it's best features focused on in custom battles and multiplayer.

Hell if it bothers you so much that you are passively looking at the menu screen rather than passively looking at the host traveling the map and going through menus you may as well just video stream through Steam to get the desired effect. Personally I would surf the web and just get the best bit of this passive interaction via text/voice chat.

Desperately trying to make towns more exciting for minority co-op mode is a bit sad. Frankly I don't understand why Talesworld insists on putting so much emphasis on making more dynamic town scenes when most mods abstract towns to fundamentally menus as a design improvement. That can fundamentally only participate in combat. I can understand wanting co-op but the way I see it there are two scenarios:

1) Janky ass co-op that may as well be custom battles
2) World state encompassing co-op that; while theoretically interesting, demands many fundamental engine redesigns and would only appeal to an extremely small minority of the base.

#1 is so half-ass it may as well not be pursued outside of mods (which it already has been). #2 isn't worth the investment especially as the devs stating no intention of pursuing it and the many redesigns it would take to make it feasible.

The gambling games and many screen shots emphasizing the towns make this very clear.

The thing though is that seems to be ignoring one of the most popular mod changes; such that it is basically universal, is allowing the player to immediately talk to the guild master and village elder.

If they want to make players excited about castle and town scenes they would allow players to both preview the battle site and customize the fortifications. Alternatively focus on the sim elements of allowing players to develop the domestic aspects and SEEING those changes.

Having random inane quests and gambling games is just more things to add to scope that I am quite certain most players will ignore unless the gambling meta is really dumb.

Freelancer is actually a good example of what happens when you implement a new feature without considering the engine design. Freelancer is fundamentally broken with the present engine due to AI lords not being able to handle player combat state logic.

To put it simply: Lords will enter ongoing battles with the assumption that the world state will continue and other lords will dog-pile in after them. The player explicitly denies this by initiating combat and freezing the world map.

Then you have other things as well. Like the luck and renown system penalizing high play time while Freelancer implicitly bloats player inactivity. Or when your lord is imprisoned and Freelancer still wants you to report to your lord on time else be seen as a deserter.

Non-trivial changes demand engine changes. Change enough of the engine and you don't even have the same game any longer. Make a bunch of mode specific engine changes and you are fundamentally creating multiple games. Project scope is a thing and its this type of thinking that may make Bannerlord vaporware.

Now that I think about it all of the co-op Empire Sim or 4x games I can think of are turn based. Dominion included. And while Dominion may have one player subordinate to another I wonder if the game binds the other players so much in regards to core gameplay mechanics.

Its one thing to have one player subordinate to another in regards to such things as in-game faction status and win state. Its another thing to deny all non-host players all but one gameplay feature. Being able to do any independent action on the world map and build your own army in particular is a pretty major feature for a war game.

I also actually can't think of any real time collaborative empire sim games. Trying to make the distinction here as there are plenty of RTS out there but they aren't comparable at all IMO. Namely as there is no world map - combat phase distinction.

I never objected to the existence to this form of co-op as an independent mod. I just object to this as a core feature for Bannerlord. Well, Dark Knights are from the same pre-release fantasy era where undead were casually roaming Calradia IIRC.

If M&B and Warband are any indication so long as Bannerlord just has to be comparable to M&B and Warband. The long term quality of this game will be in the game engine and modding potential.

Personally I suspect they are fiddling around with random single player nuances too much. So long as the features they are playing with don't break the engine just make it toggle-able as the Brytenwalda devs did for that walk backwards and trip abomination. I find it a bit silly that the devs seem obsessed with random nuances with player mortality when games with similar premises (like ROTK) will frequently enable you to modify historic lifespans and even have a mode ("Rise of heroes") where everyone is fundamentally immortal.

If they are worried about random balance issues with the factions they can just patch it after release. The meta of a single player game being initially broken can even be a source of humor and fun -- So long as the game unstable with random crashes that is.

I remember reading that Talesworld decided to completely remove competent mounted archer AI in playtesting due to difficulty -- If this is true thats a real damn shame since I imagine most of the veteran community would have loved to enable this much as many of us have long since enabled full damage.

I've made garrisons of 40-70 troops surrender to 200-350 troops.

I've never had a garrison of 300-500 surrender even when I was leading a Marshalled force that exceeded 3000 troops.

I've played Warband more than is probably healthy and level 50 just isn't happening. The exponential experience growth once you pass level 40 starts to get obscene.

43-44 is essentially a soft cap. I can believe level 45 but going higher? Not without cheating or constantly importing the same character through every mod for years, which is also basically cheating and would kill the experience of playing new mods, or even break the progression system of the mod (some mods have new skills or change character progression such as VC)

I'm playing Light and Darkness and finished the main quest and decided to follow the lost knight's map, look for the remaining clues etc.
The clues I am missing are from the box in zendar and the horse market. Horse Market only asks me to kill black khergits with no end in sight and the box in zendar only had a sledge hammer and ninja stars. Did I fuck up by doing the main quest first? Empire is basically Rhodok on steroids when it comes to crossbows. D"Shar Scorpion Assassins will sometimes snipe you with throwing daggers but they are both a minority force and -- Throwing Daggers. I mean come on now. Aside from the low range you have the low ammo capacity.

Apparently the D'Shar top archer is now mounted. So I suppose Ravenstern lost their peasant mounted archer monopoly. Ravenstern Mounted Rangers still seem superior however.

Same exact problem for throwing daggers.

The only mods that completely lack in one ladder sieges tend to have siege defense problems in the opposite direction. Which is actually a negative as ladder defenses are actually easy in Native style sieges with missile bombardment (there is an in-game answer). The opposite; making defensive sieges a complete joke unless you have near equal numbers, basically makes defensive sieges a trap. This tends to be a universal negative as there is no ingame answer aside from avoiding defensive sieges and never allowing a Marshal force to besiege a castle or town.

In fact ladder sieges tend to be the easiest sieges in the game. Even without retreating to restock on ammo you can frequently win extremely cleanly.

the quests aren't really quests and most aren't worth doing for income or gain, the lords are greedy, and the AI will annoy you at some point

When you are early game forest bandit bows can make it very difficult to get clean victories with shitty tier 1-2 units.

I actually find Sea Raiders the easiest since you can force the AI to expend all of their throwing weapons by simply riding around them. Nord recruit can actually win pretty cleanly in a melee so long as they outnumber them by a significant margin as well.

If you have enough Rhodok Crossbows (tier 2) they will typically kill them before they can advance sufficiently as well. Especially if you delay them yourself while on foot.

I put the block chance to 100 and increased feint/hold chance ranges on brainy bots and they're pretty gud.

Since they have a 100% block rate the only real way to land hits is to either kick or chamber them, and with kick avoidance on they seem to be able to react to your kicks before they even happen, though it does work sometimes. They're also sometimes able to recover from a chamber fairly quickly.

I have gear on par/better than Noldor shit (only thing i have of theirs is a horse.) I befriended the noldor by helping them kill my war enemies, and now they roam around my castles killing enemies and scaring off lords, it's pretty good.

I still can't find another gem to unlock the rune weapon area. I can't fucking remember what i did with the free gem in Rane.
