So... what should I do if I want to become a vidya music composer?

I mean, I'm working on kinda songs to showcase what I can do to put on soundcloud, but I mean... if you devs were looking for music for your game, what criterias would you use to pick this guy over this other guy?

Should I first make a few songs for free just to have something to show people, or never ever work for free?

There's a bunch of made up languages in Nier, yeah. It's all gibberish except for the very rare actually english track.

Part of the game's themes is lost civilizations, and so lost languages. So we get tracks that have vocals for languages that are meant to sound like languages that exist in the world -- but which we can't understand.

Job doesn't require maya specific knowledge. Just requires you to have the ability to do the job - which means you'd just have to demonstrate that you can make tools for the modeling software you're using right now.

Maya experience's not a hard requirement, as outlined below.

>>
>>165677809

>>
>>165677656
Yup, it's a well tread behavior pattern at this point. Making a prototype, going "welp, I've proven the concept, now comes all the work and fine tuning", and moving on to the next prototype. That's why the meme of "oh he's working on a side project his main project is dead" exists and is more often than not correct.

>>165677921
"Spin up" is real. It's accounted for when you're bringing in someone new into any job in the industry. Everyone needs time to acclimatize in some fashion or another because every studio works differently than every other studio. If in that time you can figure out how to code for Maya that'd be fine.

What they're looking for is that you can deliver results - that's their highest priority. If you look like you do good work, have evidence that you've done work like what they're looking for, and are 'for sale at the right price' and interview well - you're probably going to get the job.

Depends on how senior the position is, how bad they're hurting for that role to be filled, and how their other candidates are looking.

They'll take someone who'll take a little time to become proficient but has a proven record otherwise over leaving a seat empty if they're hurting enough.

If they're that uncertain how well you'd do for the job they'd just ask if you're comfortable starting out on contract.

Todays --Progress--

Replaced my launch menu with a Spaceship (that has no textures, shut up) where you make your choices and launch the levels.

It also shows the game loop, you buy upgrades, roll bonuses for the level (damage & enemy bonuses/penalties) and then selects the level and drops into the world.
With that said, the game is actually at an alpha state and i just need to add sound effects. Would you assholes be interested in testing it or should just keep it for myself until i eventually give up?

When I call this on something like a key press, it works fine. When I call it via an animation event, and there is only one enemy, it works fine. When there are two enemies, the first if statement will not work, but the second will. Only when using the animation event though, otherwise they both work fine in every scenario. Anyone know why?

What the job winds up actually being:
- We need someone to take pressure off our senior environment artist. What we're using is this plugin toolset in Maya, learn it.
- Your job will be to polish assets in these maps. Here's your first one, here's the ASG, and here's the senior EA.
- Deadline is next week and you'll be presenting a progress report on what you've done so far in two days at a meeting so be ready.

Having less stuff in your game doesn't mean you have no standard. In fact in many cases it's good to remove things that don't enhance your game, because sometimes those things just add bloat.

So, you need to learn to not get attached to an idea or mechanic. Think about if you really need that thing in the game for your game to be good.

How do you get yourself to do something if you feel like it'll be futile in the end? What if you think you're too old and that is whats stopping you?

There's the argument, "If you truly enjoy it then you will get good and achieve some kind of success." But what if you really don't enjoy doing anything productive or cool? What if your main hobby is keeping your brain empty or filled with grey matter with trash tv/anime, fast paced image boards, and pornography when you get home from a wage slave job?

Ultimately all the art, games, et cetera we make will vanish. The universe will run out of heat - our works will collapse into ever expanding and collapsing black holes. Everything we do or will have ever done will be disassembled on the subatomic level and scattered to the ether.

What we do we do for those around us who are living now, or will be living soon. We don't do it to survive the inevitable death of our sun or planet; we don't do it to survive for millenia - we do it for the now and the soon to come. If there's any good to us being sapient and being able to live in a world we can actually comprehend, it's for us to observe and appreciate it. Making games lets us appreciate that fleeting life.

If you need a better argument for making games than survival (via making money to live off it), then I welcome you to consider that in making art you elevate the world by elevating people's awareness of the world. Men who live a thousand lives in games get to live beyond what they would otherwise be able to. People who will never be able to live to see another galaxy you may transport so that they can. You bring purpose to those who want it and new and exciting lives to those who dream them.

Consider that all those things you consume in your hobby people made for you to enjoy as you did. If you're enjoying what they're making, what they've done wasn't futile. If the world was appreciated in some fashion, even the world's existence wasn't futile for that moment. So, in short: Whatever you do, it's only futile if nobody appreciates what you've done.

By making games and making art, you give the world the ability to appreciate itself in ways it might not've otherwise been appreciated. Just like make game.

>Ultimately all the art, games, et cetera we make will vanish. The universe will run out of heat
let me stop you right there Gary Johnson.
does all art require heat/light/movement? arguably you could say art requires an observer which will no longer exist but objectively (and for the purpose of art as immortality) then the art which requires no work of physics to exist (static objects) lives on immortal (if it survives without physical destruction before heat death secures it's safety).

and i might add that the heat death of the universe isn't actually a given thing that has been proved, we don't actually know that entropy is all one way.

Art requires some form of energy or mass, yes. Otherwise it's not observable. If the energy/mass used to make that art is scattered and decomposes into its base elements, it's no longer what it was. If any observer that happened by they couldn't know what it was to begin with and so couldn't feasibly put it back together to appreciate what it was.

No bonds are permanent. Any complex matter arrangements will eventually decay into their base components. Everything decays. Heat death is likely from what we know though sure, it's not been proven. But even if it isn't - whatever you use to fashion your art together will eventually decompose into electrons, protons, and so forth over a large enough span of time.

I know you didn't because my point wasn't about how as we understand it anything we make now will not survive indefinitely, so sayeth physics.

I didn't say the decomposition of complex matter into its basic forms was heat death. That's a separate thing. I'm saying that everything has a half life if you look at it over a long enough period of time.

A complex object with absolutely perfect bonds that never decay is an object that never loses energy. As far as we know, no such object can exist. Eventually, it will decay so long as it does not live in an entirely empty universe devoid of any other source of energy or mass.

When doing a 2D game, how do you handle different resolutions? Do you have to provide all sprites for the largest possible resolution? I mean you can't just show more of the game, and you can't just stretch it like a flat image, so you have to show the same but at a higher resolution, correct? What if somebody has 4K?

no, its not
it looks shit if you just use a trail

1. the homing laser from the player shouldnt go straight to the target. it should should make turns to look more wild
2. the homing laser should come out of the weapon while still being long enough. if you just use a trail, the trail will not come out of the weapon at some point if you are moving, it just stands still
3. the trail just disappears if the laser hits its target. it should slowly fade away though

What did he mean by this?
>the trail just disappears if the laser hits its target. it should slowly fade away though
Just before the laser object dies and takes everything with it, detach the trail and then set it to autodestruct so that it deletes itself when it's done.

At it's heart though, it is really just a trail. I might write something up ultra quick.

His homing lasers are not bad. They look wild (make a huge turn before homing in), and they fade out and not just disappear.

However, they do not come out of the ship really. Only at the very beginning do they actually come out of the ship. After this they just stand still and get "detached" from the ship. That's pretty cheap.

Typically a game will keep a fixed vertical size, and allow more or less visibility horizontally. If you're using high resolution art for the game then there wont be a problem scaling it up or down a bit, it wont be too noticeably different. If you're making a pixel art game then scaling it up can cause some artifacts if it's not an integer scale. But you could just round it to the nearest integer scale lower than the screen size, and fill any extra space with black, or a simple background pattern.
If it's important that the player doesn't see any more than you designed them to see, then you'll need to have letterboxing and pillarboxing.

Got a gui screen system working, meaning to say it keeps track of previous screens you went to, so clicking on the back button will bring you back to the proper screen.

You guys got any preferences or recommendations on the in-game menu for this (layout, appearance, whatever)?

I kept the menu at the left side so that when you're changing graphics options like bloom, anti-alias, etc. you can see the changes in real-time.

You can't backdash in the air but you can dash in the air and ground.
Dash gives you more i-frames but you can't spam it as much
Backdash is a bit faster to distance yourself but has less i-frames and you can use it more often.

I'm still debating whether to have it.

C) Wouldn't really work the way I have it right now.
Unless you're in the middle of an attack, pressing left/right instantly makes you face that direction (I don't have/want/plan to add turn around animations).

So someone just suggested having down + B do backdash while whatever else you press (B, B+direction) does a forward dash.

I think this is pretty good so I'll go with that since I myself get confused and accidentally backdash.

They'll spawn on some planets and wander randomly spreading a web of destructible goop if the spot isn't already covered. Maybe I should slow down the animation? >I'm just not good at putting notes down on a piano roll rather than playing them
I'd recommend getting a decent MIDI keyboard and learning about quantization settings, in that case! I'm more of a "programmer" type when it comes to production so I mostly use my mouse and keyboard but a lot of people just record their playing and quantize whatever notes might be slightly off beat (or just keep em, depending on their style). Honestly making music is a LOT faster that way so you're actually kind of at an advantage there.
I just bought an M-Audio Oxygen 49 for Christmas and really enjoy it if you're looking for a cheap USB solution. It has faders for mixing, plenty of mappable knobs and drum pads, DAW controls, and a really nice auto button that detects your software and maps things automagically. Only ran me 135 on Amazon which is really affordable for a midi keyboard of that size, and it doesn't feel like a cheap piece of shit like the 25 key toys I've been using till now.

Also honestly I wouldn't say that hardware synths are a great investment unless you're going for a very specific sound. The only reason I own hardware is because I'm really into romplers and 90s digisynths, most of which use proprietary samples that are illegal to distribute. Roland's legal team is notorious about that shit. Check out the Korg Legacy Collection though, probably my favorite VST bundle. Really affordable and has everything you need to make some great stuff.

Sheryl is more offensive, does more damage and has more range. I wanted her to be a normal/easy to use character. Lucy has to be unlocked after beating Sheryl's story mode so it's kind of a way to have a "harder" mode but not really.

Lucy's playstyle would be more defensive, dodge/parries. She does less damage and has less range because she uses a knife like this. Parries would stun enemies and cause them to be more vulnerable so I want to encourage people to use that. She has more mobility and speed than Sheryl.

Yeah, I did that but my computer's just too much of a piece of shit, lol. The latency just completely ruins my playing. Keyboard I bought has awful velocity detection too, but that's another story.

That M-Audio Oxygen 49 thing looks pretty cool, though. I might consider saving money for something similar - my current midi keyboard is a two-octaves piece of crap without any real controls.

I actually do like the sound of old 90's synths, yeah - plus I would like to have synths I can use in a live setup (although that's another story than videogame music, obviously), so hardware synth is definitely something I'll go for sooner or later.

Then again, I suppose this could all be solved by having a laptop that isn't a piece of shit, but hey.

I messed around in the OBS settings and could never get it fixed. I dunno what the deal is, I only have one screen. Couldn't find any documentation on it.

So, how would I go about making a game's difficulty scale by the amount of bosses killed in gamemaker studio? As in, say, you kill one boss, and it gets added to a counter and every level of the counter adds new enemies to the spawn table, new loot drops and so on, until the bosses killed reaches about five, then it triggers a game complete screen. Thanks in advance.
>>

>>
>>165699391
Ahhhhh, I see. My computer's pretty middle of the road, so tracking isn't usually too bad, but I have to freeze all my tracks and up the buffer when mixing; latency isn't a concern in that situation though. Have you tried lowering your buffer settings while recording individual tracks, then freezing them immediately after tracking to save on processing costs? Once you have the general composition down you can always unfreeze and make sound design decisions with a cranked up buffer, similar to what I do.

i'm just telling you that there's a ton of tutorials that you can follow, but first to ask yourself if you need the tutorials in the first place or if you can figure things out on your own by looking up the documentation, or at the very least to use the tutorials as a reference instead of a guide, and also that game maker oriented tutorials are gonna treat you like a baby because game maker is targeted to people who can't code

>>
>>165706436
Using the engine is easy. That's not the problem. The problem is just coding, which takes years to learn decently.

That#s why I don't just google for "learning C#" but rather for "how to make a homing laser". Because I most definitely won't spend years here trying to learn this horrible roboter language without being able to do anything with it the whole time.
>>
>>165706340
It's honestly probably a single line of C# you would tack to a particle effect as a bullet prefab.

It would take any of us 5 minutes to make. Instead we've spent 5 minutes trying to get across to you that you can't just tutorial your way into everything, the only people who think you can actually make a game like that are engine devs because they literally imagine there are packages like "Homing Missile" and "Homing Laser" that Unity devs can just drag and drop or tutorials for "How to make a homing laser" we can copy paste from. The truth is to be a Unity dev you need to learn to code.

>It's honestly probably a single line of C# you would tack to a particle effect as a bullet prefab.
LMAO. I already posted a homing missile system code here... The shit was miles long and full of complicated shit.

And even if the stuff I need would be just a single line, this doesn't mean it is easy to learn. I don't even know wher to start when learning to code. And reaching this single line of code when learning probably will take years anyway.

I also already looked at tutorials just called "learning C#", but I didn't learn anything there. And I also already did offical tutporials, but I also didn't learn much about coding there.

By yourself? With a decent amount of effort.

A one that doesn't look like absolute shit that absolutely nobody will play on launch day? Extremely hard.

He wasn't an engine-dev, he just knew how to work hard and get games done and shipped under crunch time.

Japan doesn't really hold the same values in vidya that the west does so it's not a fair comparison

but you are back-pelling a bitreally.

Again eerie flashbacks to the beginning of sourceposter here.

>arguing needlessly with anons forever about issues that don't matter because he's clearly never going to make a game
>arguing with all advice given to him but won't stop begging for (You)s
>being rude and obnoxious for literally no reason
>no YOU guys are the shitposters

Only a matter of time now before you become insanely bitter and start attacking us randomly throughout the day.

Thing about sourceposter is he convinced himself it was the engine that was the problem and not himself.

Homing missle in unity:

using UnityEngine;
using System.Collections;

public class homing_missle : MonoBehaviour {
public Transform target;
public float speed;
// Use this for initialization
void Start () {

}
void FixedUpdate(){
transform.position = Vector3.Lerp (transform.position, target.position, speed);
}
// Update is called once per frame
void Update () {
transform.LookAt (target.position);

I don't know if you have seen message in other thread, so I will post it now again:

23/Prometheus dev here. Big thanks for playing man. It's good to know how somebody, who isn't related to the project at all, plays it for the first time. I have learned some things (like - hints on wall are not so obvious, so I should add some kind of read me with controls info). And sorry for that laggy second map. I've made big optimization since DD, so it won't go so shitty next time. Again, big thanks, you have helped me a lot.
>>
>>165676365
So, the devs didn't ever consider a moving kinematic platform like a train/vehicle and didn't have time to implement a whole new setup, so they just replaced the character's head with the tram and removed player control to simulate it.

1. Stop masturbating
2. Use that sexual energy and apply it towards your goals.
3. Love is a good temper for the sexual energy. Whereas the sexual energy is raw and chaotic, love is gentle, calm and directed. Learn to love yourself (not masturbation), love your body (get fit), love your hobbies, love your game.
This is the transmutation of the sexual energy into higher energies, the alchemical transmutation of iron into gold.
You're not too old.
Just make game.
