Useful speedrunning links:
https://www.speedrun.com/ - Has most, if not all records of runners doing certain games. Many runs have a recording so you can learn what the runners have done.

http://tasvideos.org/ - Tool-assisted speedruns. Shows how a game can be run in optimal conditions. These videos are usually useful for learning routes and certain techniques.

it's at twitch's discretion
you apply and they see how many viewers you have and how often you have them

Alright at least you recovered.

Now let's start thinking of things you're gonna need. Everyone else add in stuff too.

-TVs
-Vidya/consoles/controllers
-Powerstrips and cables
-A projecter
-functional mics
-speakers
-chairs
-Speedrunners
-People to function as MCs
-A way to collect and keep track of donations
-Streaming equipment
-Sound equipment
-People that can keep the above two functioning
-A venue
-A code of conduct (since you don't want some edgelord shouting "NIGGER!!!" every 5 seconds thinking he's being clever).
-insurance(?)

>>
>>165636615

It's not shady at all, it's just not particularly selfless either. A good chunk of its income goes to sustain itself, more than in other comparable charities.
And going by donation messages most donators seem to be under the impression donating to PCF is a step towards curing cancer when in reality PCF only gives like 15% of its income to fund research and the majority of the money goes to outreach and awareness programs.

I've worked in TV as a camera/board operator before, so I kinda know what we're doing, at least for getting the audio and video feed to where it needs to go. I also know how to use OBS (not well, but I'll learn). I'm not really sure on the hardware between console and board, though, so if someone could get me caught up on that, it'd be great. Getting the consoles won't be a problem, btw, but hopefully the players will actually own the cart they're playing on.

Woah, hang on, let me explain: This all started as a way to give people who are kind of sick of GDQ's silly and rampant PC policies a place to watch runs. That's why we were going to use the ACLU as the charity we'd donate to, as a sort of freedom-of-speech angle.

If the charity thing doesn't work out then it's for profit. It's not even a big deal. I care more about getting an event together than where the money goes. I make enough of it day to day.

If GDQ staff doesn't pay for runners at the next event, shit will go down. I will personally start a campaign to get runners a $500 stipend for travel and hotel. If they do not comply, I will take the issue to the fake news outlets and have them run with the story.

There is no reason why GDQ staff can collect over $70k from ticket sales, $175k from the charity, and $50k from ad revenue, and god knows how much from sponsors and contracts with twitch, and not reimburse the runners. If there are no runners then there is no event. Pay up Mike or you will lose your event.

there are 150 runners on average. and 50 staff. so 200 people total. if they gave them all $500 that is only $100,000.

They cap attendance at 1600 including runners. So the max is 1400 attendees. You should never assume max attendance when budgeting, so assume 1000 people. Charge them $100 for the week and that alone pays for the runners. Charge them $75 and that plus the money from ads pays for them. Charge $50 and stop being shit and get real sponsors and that pays for the runners.

The $500 stipend is VERY doable. If GDQ staff doesn't do it, it might be time the runners stood up against the GDQ staff and refuse to do their runs they get in.

Quarterly would be the most often I'd recommend it be to be honest.

Part of the magic of GDQ is that it only happens twice a year. Making it monthly would make it more likely for people to get disinterested imo.

What's also nice is that since you're in Cali, you can make the first few mostly local people, which would also keep costs low (so less would need to go for travel reimbursement.)

>>
>>165639147
yeah sounds like he just doesn't want to pay anyone.
Frankly, if these events get sponsors, that means money which means compensation to the entertainers. Maybe not pay, but free venue/lodging/travel is a start.
Though if this happens, you'd need to set a criteria of who can run and who can't because you'll get shitloads of tryhards who want to get in just for money.
>>
>>165639147
runners don't get compensated because they have been trained to give all their money to mike uyama. dont worry though. now that speedrunning is mainstream with the $2m this year, along with esport teams picking up people like trihex and striker, runners will soon start negotiating their own appearance fees. so you should definitely be prepared for that if you want to get some of the big names to attend your event.

They've proved they don't need "big names" at their event time and time again. GDQ is self-sustaining now, people just tune in because it's GDQ.

Here's all the submission for this event, see how many were rejected? Lots of runners could pull out and easily be replaced.
>>
>>165639324
What risk is there?

Seriously. Events -always- compensate people for their time.

If you want the best, you have to pony up the cash. So many presidents do talks and they are highly compensated for their time. Rarely do they do it for free.

If you let anyone do it, then they're doing it for tertiary compensation. Something not tangible like cash, but things like
>advertising
>networking
>exposure

Cash is always king. If you wanted to get some big name speedrunners there, the easiest way would be to throw down some serious cash.

You offer Cosmo 20 grand, you could probably get him to come to an event and speedrun WW or OoT.
>>
>>165639435

For those wanting more, obviously there's another SGDQ coming soon, but we're definitely bringing back the GDQ Hotfix. We're also talking with runners and the game communities on other streams we can do to maybe help a whole new generation of runners get into speedrunning.
But for now, it's time to pack up and decompress.
Here's to many more world records!

They don't need the best.
And Cosmo isn't worth 20 grand anymore, and I highly doubt he ever was.
The vast majority of the people watching and donating are casual viewers, they don't follow the speedrun scene. They don't tune in for streamers, they tune in for games.
You're beyond delusional if you think any "big name speedrunner" (if there even is anyone left at this point) is worth any payment - simply because they don't generate significantly more than random runner who is as good or better at the game #34874.
>>
How exactly are you going to compensate runners? How do you determine who gets what amount of money?

You have no idea how to run events like this.

Take UFC as an example. You can build someone up with hype and marketing. Look at Rhona Rousey. She's a fucking joke of a fighter. Anyone who fights knew it. She won all of her matches in the first round with submission holds.

She was trumped up to be the best, and it fucking worked. It sold tickets. It sold pay per views. People came to see it. Even though she got totally washed up after Holly Holm broke her spirit, she came back and still got paid 3 million to get her ass kicked by the dyke with the lion mask.

20 Grand out of whatever millions they got is small potatoes. You -can- hype it up. "The Return of Cosmo" Windwaker or OoT next AGDQ.

You can build storylines around people.

Face the facts, the GDQ's are just shitty events that don't realize they're shitty.

You get GGGs like Heshy boy here who run events and actually compensate their runners. The events will multiply, and big names will go where the dosh is, which will bring in the views, which will bring in even more cash.

Hell, all this talk is making ME want to start up an event too. Maybe in a couple years when I have the money (I live in a small shitty studio so I obviously can't host people here).

We're gonna change landscape of speedrunning, anons. And we can all look back at how it all started as shitposting in a /vg/ thread.
>>
>>165639720
Maybe a small portion of the donations could go to the runner? Either during their run or through incentives. Or you could choose to you want it to go towards or some shit, I don't know.

Ok familia chill out. Nobody is expecting you to join an established community and be friends with everyone overnight. You gotta lurk first and slowly build up courage for some more complex interaction. Or wait for other people to come to you like if you play an mmo people will look for parties etc. I mean if you are self-aware enough to post this here I am pretty sure you have what it takes to break out of your shell. I probably shouldn't even be giving advice as I am in a very similar spot but idk just wanna help out even if its nothing.

I play PoE and am in a guild. I don't know any of the people in there and play solo all the time but just seeing guild chat and sometime replying to someone with meme/smalltalk gives me comfort.

You can offer a percentage of total donations.

0.05% of 1.2 mllion is still 6 grand. That's worth it for a lot of people.

Pay smaller runners less. Pay larger runners more to pull in the viewership.

>>
>>165639720

Baseline is to cover all travel costs. If SpeedyMcNoname comes all the way from Romania, he's obviously gonna get more reimbursement than JoeShmo who lives down the street.

After that, if, say, 10% of the donations are going to the runners, then it'll be divvied up by some algorithm that controls for views, time spent playing, and money donated while they were playing. Everyone deserves money, but paying a 1hr run of a single game should get you less money that 5hrs of 3 games.

Like I said, you're fucking delusional. You're completely missing the appeal of these speedrun marathons and the type of people who watch them.

Nobody fucking knows who Cosmo is. Cosmo in his heyday has a couple hundred subs. His average resetfest streams had maybe 10k viewers, only rising significantly higher when he was late in a run and a bunch of casuals just tuned in to see what the fuzz was about.
Nobody is going to tune in (and more importantly, fork over money) to see "the return of the king".

Hell you can look at the fucking viewers numbers right now. The GDQs feature less and less "high profile" runners, that is people with a significant twitch following by themselves, every year - yet the views and donations keep rising.

People tune in for games, not runners. People tune in for nostalgia and "to see their childhood destroyed", not to see the actually best speedrun in this category at this moment. People donate to feel good about themselves and help a good cause, not to fund individuals.

>>
>>165640358

If it's just some bros hanging out, yeah, no need to pay.

But if it's a full-on event with donations (beyond just the small paying Hesh back for the venue-type stuff), people better be getting paid. Just have a method to divvy up income based on what they do in the run and how long and we're good. With MAYBE a discussed bonus if they're a big name.

But always work in percentages. That way it scales with what the event makes and everyone wins.

I think this guy has the right idea
My only insight into this is that there is no need to pay runners anything if the event itsself is not asking for donations, but the moment that any money is being donated, then the first place it should go to covering lodging and travel.

Fuck getting hung up on money though, we should be talking about other logistics

I don't think it's mutually exclusive to have a comfy, fun stream and something that pays. For example, we have Daigo Umehara's stream, which has something like 40k viewers regularly - and their last episode was street fighter players singing karaoke.

There are things to think about, things to work through, but I'm confident that things will at least not get me stabbed, and that's good enough for me
>>
Ok this is how you do it.

You do the event with races only. 1v1 2v2 4 way etc. You announce the races month ahead of time. You promote the runners. You create buzz around them. You solicit donations the whole month as well as during the event. You sell merch. All money made goes into a prize purse for each match. When the event happens you give the winner of the races a Belt and offer them to come back next event to defend their championship.

The winners of each race get a 75% cut from the prize purse and the loser gets 25%. The TO takes a clean 20% off the top before split. Both runners get publicity to grown their own brands and stuff.

There you have it. Pure cancer speedrun style.

If you're going to put money into speedgamers, it should just be a flat payment to help towards travel costs, anything else invites disaster. >>
>>165640762

People put on acts to entertain. That's how entertaining works.

But if it works in percentages, they have to earn their money. If you're a dick, no one will want to donate, which means you get less money.

On the other hand, flat rates just make people lazy. If you're getting paid 60 bucks regardless of how you act, why would put in any effort? Meritocracy ftw.

>>165640803

Travel costs being the exception to the flat rate thing. But even then the amount you get there should depend on how far away you are. Traveling 2 counties shouldn't get you 500 bucks, but traveling across an ocean should get you more than that.

Flat rates only needed here to prevent abuse and expensive dinners on the host's dime.

>>165640987

Expanding visibility for starters.

Local's best when you're just starting out, obviously. But if you have the money and are at least somewhat known, why not splurge and get someone with fans from a distance?

there are two types of events. competitive events and casual events. casual events are your lets players entertaining the runners, caring more about a good time. competitive events are your pure speedruns and tournaments. you need to pick one and stick to it. either do a fun casual event with speedruns and try to entertain or do a super competitive speedrun tournament with prizes for winners.

the speedrun community is currently stuck between these two. GDQs are casual and want to be "esports" (competitive). maybe it's time for an event to be pure competition and reward the runners for their work?

one of the problems with competitive speedrunning is that it's not entirely skill-based since there's rng involved which there's way more in some games compared to others. almost every speed has rng and people are going to be pissed if they lose money because of bad rng.

Smash also has a casual fan base that's 3x as large as its competitive one because its a party game full of fucking Nintendo characters that you can just pick up and mash with your friends on a couch. Most of the competitive fan base originated from that.

Speed running requires too much to even simply be casual so that's a terrible comparison.

Even if they did, it's a completely different beast. Fighting games are established as a genre for competition.
Most speedruns are single player experiences, who's gonna pay to see people compete seperately?

Second, all of this chatter for an 8 hour "marathon" is retarded. That is a night with bros, not something that needs this much tripfagging.

Go as big as you can. Make it a solid 24/7 couple of days at least. Do your best to give a way more enjoyable experience for both runners and chatters. Doing so will put you far. Look at how this little beta bitch is threatened already. GDQ will just laugh at an 8 hour thing. But something longer will eventually make them feel threatened too, and youll get tons of support from all the people they have cucked or jilted in their slog for 2.2 mil for jewyama and pcf

>Not covering snacks and beer if they're in your apartment.

Shiggy.

Also, the questions he had about what if you don't manage to get enough donations and whatnot are legitimate.

The solution is to be transparent about there the money is going. My suggestion for that is:
-Level 1: Donations start as reimbursement for the event. That includes equipment costs and runner travel.
-Level 2: After that is fulfilled, the money starts going only to the runners. Enough for, say, 10 bucks per runner for every hour they play (so Joe who plays for 4 hours gets more money than Bob who only plays for one).
-Level 3: After THAT is fulfilled, then the percentages get divvied up. 10% for the runners (what each runner gets depends on the views and amount of money they generate during their turns in the stream). The rest goes to charity.

Everybody wins here. We'll assume that by the time you're getting runners from far off lands, you'll be getting at LEAST enough donations to cover level 1. But if you don't get enough to finish Level 2, you're not required to give the runners that extra compensation. But at least this way they will at least be able to break even, which is what's important.

This is the most fair way to compensate that I can think of without potentially screwing you over financially (or screwing the runners). If anyone else has a better idea, I'd like to hear them.

How is that splitting fair though? Timeslots, what preceeds or follows a run, technical stability, etc. all play a role in deciding how many viewers and donations one get. The best comparison to go to here is television because it also features several different programs (runs) with different actors (runners) on one consecutive channel (stream). And you don't see much real time or ad-based earning there because it is silly and just invites feelings of unfairness and resentment. Instead you agree on a contract beforehand and how the channel uses your work to make profits is up to them.

Kept calling a trick as "Cosmo skip"

It's funny that GDQ tries so hard to be PC and can't even tell a dude to stop calling Nascissa as Cosmo.
>>
>>165642661
The runner said something about Narcissa and said "formerly Cosmo" or something along those lines. Then had the balls to use the word he to refer to it.

>come under the guise of a fun event with bros while streaming
>let them know they'll be given an even take of all donations if there are any, after expenses are deducted and equipment costs, etc.

That's all there is to this starting.

People don't understand that to build something you need to put in the time and effort. AGDQ started as CGDQ and was tiny as fuck. Hell, AGDQ was small as fuck until like 2014 when it blew up.

People will like alternatives. If a good production is put on and theres a noteworthy cause, then it will gain traction.

>>
>>165643127
No, YOU need to get a clue dude. Some of us are actually adults and understand that yes, "shit idea, never going to work".

Not him.but by the way that I'd a particularly awful idea since, as it was said many posts ago, not every single bit of a speedrun does the runner have complete control over. Imagine losing out on your bonus because you didn't get "good RNG". Dumb fuck.
>>
>>165643274
Bonuses are just that, Bonuses, what part of that did you miss?
>>
>>165643306
If you advertise a bonus, it will stop being a bonus, because all of the runners will be going for it like this anon >>165643242 described.
>>
>>165642701

Come up with an equation to control for various factors. Everyone should be able to get something.

That being said, there are obviously going to be prime time slots, and you're not gonna have Awful Block in a prime time slot. People should be able to understand that, and sign a thing beforehand that locks them into that equation for the duration of the event. No divas allowed.

>>165642807

No charity makes sense while it's small.

My divvying suggestion is to just prevent people getting catty about the amount they get ("HURRRR WHY AM I GETTING THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY AS BOB?! I PLAYED A LOT MORE THAN HE DID!!!"). Though hopefully that won't happen at the very beginning (since people'll be happy they're even being compensated).

>>165643306

Not that anon, but people get salty about money. Best to leave the amount to more passive factors that they have no way of controlling at all (and hoping people won't donate to Bubbles when he screws up so he gets less money).
>>
>>165643306
So you're actually not going to address anything I said then. Nice.

You don't think that's unfair? At all? The bonus would not go towards the better runner 100% of the time. Hello?? So you're retarded wishful thinking of "hurrr it would incentivize practice" goes out the window.
>>
>>165643153
> High as fuck estimate
> Schedule 45 minute between run to set up
> So much ban happy that the fear of being late is in every speedrunner head

Not at all, it's actually pretty baffling they still ended up with 4 hours late on schedule, they should finish one day early.

Also they get millions of dollars donation they have fucktons of paid technician to help
>>
>>165643153
stay fucking triggered, coolmatty. go shuffle your eggbody and giant ass on mikes cock after your are done defending gdq staff
>>
Just let people donate specifically to a runner if they want to, and have everything else go to even expenses. remove the charity meme entirely
>>
Wtf are you planning bonuses for lol. Just pay for their travel and hotel and you good. Would need a shit ton in donations. Honestly just evenly splitting the donations among runners would be valid because there is no chance you break even in the first event
>>
>>165643405
>Come up with an equation to control for various factors
Yeah feel free to do that. Come up with an equation for perpetual motion while you're at it.

And if you have people sign shit beforehand, just make it a proper contract with set compensation. This way anyone can see beforehand if they feel fairly compensated and you, the organizer that is the one wanting people to work for him, is the one footing the risks, as it should be.
>>
>>165643560
>even expenses
*event expenses
>>
>>165643556
>>165643532
talk is cheap my friends, I wish you luck in making a speedrun marathon better than GDQ

I really mean that too but as it stands, GDQ is the best we've got
>>
I want to support this new marathon because a new speedrunning event is so badly needed. But I dont think using donations to pay for runners will work out because why would people donate for a shortass 8 hour stream with no incentive? Normie Twitch streamers stream longer than 8 hours every week.
People need incentive to donate and charity combined with lots of prizes works best for the gaming community. if its just an 8 hour apartment stream, no one will give a shit outside this thread
>>
>>165643598

Of course you'd do things by pre-disposed contracts.

If you were organizing AGDQ you'd have a lot of data to calculate next years potential expenses and incomes.

You can use that to give a baseline for all runners, and give higher payments to people in various primetime slots, or guys with star power who will pull in more viewers by shilling their streams and such.
>>
>>165643784
nah dude competitive speedrunning and paying autists to grind runs is the next big thing

>>
>>165643784

Buy pearler beads in bulk and make little 8-bit key chains. MAybe bracelets and necklaces too.

It's the most cost-effective option.
>>
Runners should not be paid or compensated because if you're that stupid and autistic to spend that much time trying to break games from 20 years ago without finding a better and more productive use of your time you deserve it.

They'll never be paid because they know this and they're too beta and spineless to do anything about it.
>>
>>165643928
if you want to produce an actual product, why not get a real job?
>>
>le donate and the money goes to the runners
You probably won't even break even. People donate to charity because it makes THEM feel good.
Very few of these people actually give a fuck about the runners

Go take a peek at reddit and see them whining about the "please stop shouting" for super metroid. Those babies are saying it "killed the hype" and "no run (or race) is more important than the atmosphere of the event"
Those that do give a fuck about the runners tend to take the time to follow them on twitch/twitter so they're getting payed in exposure (which is more than the deserve, let's be honest)

If you seriously want to kickstart a successful speedrunning event you can't be so obviously 'for profit'

>>165643928
Most cost effective is asking people to donate prizes
>>
>>165643928
lmao I really hate those prizes. What was that one girl last year who said she spent 50? 500? hours on some mosaic that looked like shit
Some of the creative homemade prizes are cool. But most of them are trash. If this new thing happens, Id happily donate a Steam gift card or something viewers/runners might actually want and use
>>

Pick something "feel good" that actual does shit. Or consider not taking donations for the first event to simply get your name out there.

do this. split the event up into 15 min segments. for every runner, give them 1 part of the total revenue for each 15 mins they played. example: someone with a 60 min run would get 4 parts and someone with a 15 min run would get 1 part. that splits it evenly then. the runner who plays the harder game (longer) gets reimbursed fairly.
>>

>>
>>165644636

Geee, maybe don't have long speedruns?

Games should aim for 30-45 minutes I think. Speedruns that are over an hour are usually quite boring.

Obviously you can also have a lot less downtime if you actually, you know, just have a better production.

Maybe like
>Running 6 super nintendo games in a row to reduce the amount of downtime.
>>
>>165644698
the problem is the same
anyone would want to run the 90 minute games

speedruns are too vastly different for any sort of clear-cut division to work
>>
>>165644582
>runners get a cut

>commentators
>event staff
>event organizers
>tech team
>set-up/break down crew
>get nothing

>no money set aside for:
>televisions
>games
>consoles
>capture cards
>furniture
>various electric/technical equipment
>cameras
>microphones
>a computer to stream it all on
>renting the venue
>feeding people

You people are seriously underestimating just how big of an undertaking this is. If you have a dime left over to split up for the runners I'll be shocked
>>
>>165644749

The solution is to give people blocks of time to do what they want.

>Here, you have an hour and a half to use as you see fit

So maybe you see a Mega Man X Any %, a few OoT Any%'s, and maybe a glitch exhibition for the remaining time.

This would also allow speedrunners to use that time to get a good start if they so chose, or to grind multiple attempts.

>>165644817
the biggest problem that people seem to miss is that you have to actually make the money to pay for those things. a new event wont have stream monsters attend, just the runners will attend. no sponsors will even touch a new event until they have proven themselves. no one will donate to an event unless they get something out of it.

in order to make an event grow and even have the chance to pay people, you first have to think of ways to make the money. and that is the hard part with a small group.

>>165644648
expenses could be payed with sponsorships, but the even would have to get them first.

the event doesn't work if there is no reason for people to watch. people watch gdqs because it's people the like playing games they like and the charity aspect makes it special.

I think a competative setting where doing good is important would be good. have a bunch of speed run races for bragging rights and have the money raised durring that time go to winners choice. besides that have filler runs inbetween.

Then you could also have the long games streams being on an alternative channel.

Anything else seems like a clusterfuck.

This is the big problem with Uyama, Sumi, CoolMatty, and the rest of these faggots. People think it's cancer RESEARCH (medicine), when it's going to cancer PREVENTION (pamphlets & the pockets of executives).

The PCF Breakdown:

>35% goes toward educational material like the "Check Your Mate" posters
>22% goes to funding researchers ($250,000 went to Maarten Bosland, D.VSC., PH.D.)
>19% goes toward "Community Outreach"
>16% goes toward "Fundraising" (which includes money spent paying "volunteers")
>8% goes toward the Management and "general expenses"

Honestly, if I created GDQ, I would have done the exact same thing. Mike Jewyama is literally living the dream, until he dies early, cause we all know that's happening. People would give up their firstborns and betray all their friends to only "work" 200 hours out of the year and get paid more than the vast majority of people on this planet.

And none of you lie saying you wouldn't have done the same thing if you were in his shoes.
>>
>>165665243
I wouldn't Mike. Don't you have a tranny to suck today?

They're a community full of people with a severe mental illness, what do you expect?

Also I don't understand why people bend over backwards to accommodate such a small community. They just want their social justice points i guess

Imagine a life where you have never been great at anything, never felt the urge to be great at anything, never felt that magnetic admiration to someone who was great at something, wanted to imitate and ultimately defeat him. Just nothing. Literally all you do in life is exist. Occupy space. pass the time. You're a chick.

You're bored, tweeting about your fucking hair and not even feeling any kind of happiness from it, just soothing your constant need to be bitter and cunty and petty toward other women. Every single thing you've done in the past year was mundane, shallow, and boring. You spent the last six hours reading kinda-interesting Reddit stories about people who made interesting Halloween hats for their kids or some stupid bullshit that you think is interesting and you may say is interesting but you're not really sure if it's really interesting. You're just fucking sitting there, gestating, fermenting, with a moist hole between your legs that guarantees you'll at least never have to get up and move around and work to support yourself.

And then you see men, over in some corner, having fun. You've never seen this before. What are they even doing? Instead of their consciousnesses merely sitting in their thick skull and revolving around itself, they are imbuing their conscious energy and intentionality into external objects, crafts, goals, projects. All the bitterness and cuntiness you feel nonstop seems to be absent, as they congratulate each other for being victorious, and happily learn from someone who defeated them. These creatures are truly content to be alive. They have found purpose in a purposeless universe.

And your gaze turns back on itself, on your self, and you realise you've never had that. You can never have it. You're just a stupid cunt.

So you get up, you walk over there, and you fucking ruin everything. Just ruin the whole fucking thing. The five seconds of attention you get will be worth destroying it. Because you're a woman.
