I do feel like Peach and Bowser's kidnapping for 30 years should be given a review of some sorts.
Like Peach is continuously horrified at Bowser taking her. And by this point it's somewhat commonplace. I'm not saying she should be "I AM STRONG INDEPENDENT WIMMINZ" because Mario, Bowser and Peach is a love story that is as old as time, but more Peach should be on friendlier terms. I don't know, like Bowser gives her the decency to pack her overnight bag or Peach has it all ready with a book to pick up before she gets taken. Maybe have a nice discussion about the kids before Mario gets there. I mean, Bowser's not really evil as such to Peach, I don't think outside of the games you play as her he's laid a finger on her, moved her out of the way before smashing shit in one. She's more safe with Bowser than anything.
I don't know if this is done in the RPG's, although I know they have more character for everyone who isn't Mario.

Bowser and Wily make for more relatable bosses than Eggman. Eggman is fun and all, in almost every iteration, but outside of the small ignored excerpt in how he looked up to his grandfather he hasn't got a human side. Wily is jealous but wouldn't hurt Light, Bowser is in love with Peach and won't have her hurt. Eggman cares about no-one. In fact, the person he seems to care most about other than him is Sonic, in a kind of creepy I can't be happy unless I have some banter in the day with him. I don't know, I just vastly enjoyed Wily than Eggman, and I fucking love Eggman.

In order for Tails to truly gain "independence", he needs to fight Sonic. That sub-subplot of Colors and Lost World needs to come to fruition. Sonic needs to finally fight Tails for real, and it needs to be epic.

Now let me explain.

In Sonic Battle, Emerl started out as Sonic's new Apprentice. Characters like Amy and such treated Emerl like Sonic's "son", or at least new little brother alongside Tails, and everyone trained and mentored Emerl but it was Sonic that mostly mentored the Gizoid. Eventually, as Emerl began to get stronger and mimic Sonic and the other's personality, he became more and more like Sonic's rival, with shades of the Apprentice role still lingering. Until it all cultimated in the final battle of the game, when Emerl was forced to become "The Gizoid" side of himself, and nearly destroyed the world, and Sonic had to essentially go all out (NO LIMITS), and destroyed the ultimate fighting weapon in half a minute.

And Emerl started out as Sonic's apprentice, like Tails.

In order for Tails to truly gain complete independence and stand on his own two feet individually, he needs to evolve into a Rival-type character that Sonic fights against, in a big final plot-centric battle, like Sonic v Metal Sonic,Sonic v Knuckles, Sonic v Shadow, Sonic v Emerl, Sonic v Blaze, Sonic v Jet, and Sonic v Silver. Sonic and Tails need to fight. At least once. And it needs to be big.

What the exact reasons would be, I don't know. Maybe Eggman or some other villain tries manipulating and brainwashing Tails, but he resists, but he's still influenced to the point that he begins to see Sonic and his own role in a negative light and he decides to fight Sonic anyway...? Or.. something, I don't know. Point is, Tails needs to take that next step from Sidekick into Rival in order to gain true independence. He's proved to himself that he can do awesome stuff in Adventure, now he needs to prove it everyone else, including Sonic.

Let me make somethin clear.

I'm not saying I want to completely destroy Sonic and Tails' brotherly bond. No. Sonic and Tails are brothers with a very strong bond. It's only their 'Mentor and Apprenice' dynamic that would change to the two of them being on equal grounds, where Tails grew from the Apprentice into someone on equal footing with his Mentor.

I'm just saying that, for Tails to gain true independence and grow from just being the 'sidekick', he needs to grow into the "Rival" type of character that clashes with Sonic over the course of a game and has a big epic fight with him at the end, and then they make up and resolve their issue or whatever and thy're best friends again but things are different between them.

So how about, Post-Adventure, Tails has started up his ow tech/aeronautics company on the side, and doing all sorts of things when he's not adventuring with Sonic, but most people around the world still see him as "Sonic's Sidekick". And he's pretty much ok with that. At least on the surface.

But during this hypothetical game, Eggman or whoever try to manipulate and brainwash Tails, and his real thoughts on still being in Sonic's shadow after making his own mark on the world comes out, or at least is altered to a darker perspective, and that becomes the main motivation for Tails being the new 'Rival' for Sonic during this plot.

I'm not totally sure, kind of all over the place actually. For a long time I had heard about how good the comics were, but was always intimidated by how much I had to catch up on. For about a year I was just trying to get into them. I would just read a few in one sitting every couple months or so.

I read the first ones but only up to Rabbot's introduction, and when I heard about the reboot I thought it would be OK to start there though I wanted an understanding of how the reboot fit into the series. But the Megaman Crossover, which from what I understand is how the reboot started, kept referencing older comics, and when I went to read those first real quick they also referenced even older ones. The first arc that I think I actually sat down and read through was some kind of softer reboot, where Eggman used a "genesis wave" to reset the universe, but only temporarily I think?

I didn't really get hooked into the series and start consistently reading until I stopped worrying about knowing all the lore and just jumped into the reboot.

Would that not make him dependent on someone else instead? I'm assuming that by "join" you mean "be their sidekick", but even if that's now what you had in mind that would likely be how things turn out just given Tails personality and the personalities of most of those pictured.

It would only make him less dependent on Sonic. Unless that is the point you're trying to make; that dependence specifically on Sonic is a crutch keeping him from being independent, and by dependence on another he can get past that? Especially if it's with a character who wouldn't babysit or overshadow him so much.

Whatever the armchair character analysis may be, I personally think it would be neat to see Tails work as someone else's sidekick, even if only for a little while.
