I mean, during the game, you meet enslaved Ethernal, who serve as power source for some psi network and you entouncer Asaru, which is purely energy being.

At the same time, during X2 final mission, one of the Ethernals says that their world was "first to fall and be consumed" when mentioning enslaved races of aliens that you encounter.

But Outsiders that appear in Buerau also appears in EU, but as "officers" and lower in rank than Ethernals.

Anarchy's is just cosmetics.

Alien Rulers adds bosses and new weapons, if you're a wussy pussy you don't want it.

Shen's last gift adds a new class and a mission.

There are more mods for shen's last gift than alien rulers so that's probably more bang for your buck.

Personally i liked all of them though.

Alien Hunters has cool weapons, and adds the Frost Grenade which is just the most useful grenade you will ever have. I don't really use Sparks because they're amazing at first but then they fall off unless you have mods that let you mod their weapons.

Thats the setting of 2, but gameplay was improved (yes, I consider splitting the maps into smaller ones actually improvement over first game, since you could use all classes with success, not only scouts as the only guys, who could reach the points within reasonable time) and 3 balanced gameplay even more and provided much better plot and setting.

Each variety serves to fill a niche and each alien Pod Leader feels different to fight (ADVENT Captains also have a lot of variety, but with them it's more like "watch out for the eventual threat" because they generally don't live long enough for their class to matter).

There's also Prime enemies, which provide a very unique challenge and bridge the gap between normal enemies and Rulers.


ABA2 gets a permanent spot on my mod list. The things it does wrong aren't nearly enough to obfuscate the value it adds to the game.

All of the SPARTAN armor mods are going to have invisible legs/arms if you use the legs/arms without a Reach or Halo 4/5 torso (depends on the legs/arms the mod is from). They're meant to go with the armor.
ODST and Marine armors won't have invisible legs/arms.
Really none of them will "fuck up" the arms and legs they just have to be used together.

Yeah, I've practically never seen two terrors in the same month earlygame (bad rollovers excepted). Getting two terrors in two subsequent months and a bad rollover on top of that sounded far less likely than just a newbie exaggerating, but you seem to know your stuff so I guess XCOM really took a liking to you..

I've done the same thing with stacked interceptors. Had a game with 5-6 ravens repairing in africa, and 6 more in europe. When I only had 3-4 sats, all of them over europe. Never again.

It's just about picking your fights, for example avoiding mediums unless you have literally nothing repairing and you're willing to put half your fleet in repairs and still let the UFO get away. Below impossible you can cover the whole world with just ~2 interceptors per continent as long as you think hard before every interception and are willing to lose one or two sats in the first year.

The Early Game is quite difficult and the most difficult part of X2. When you get the mid game is when Veteran becomes a breeze.
Your best way of trucking through the early game is rushing Mag Weapons and Plated Armor, stacking Grenadiers, and making/equipping Flashbangs ASAP. Flashbangs are always useful throughout the entire campaign but they're especially important in the early game where Sectoid's psionics are a legitimate threat and your squad's aim is ass.
Which brings me to the Grenadiers who can carpet bomb everything in the early game instead of always relying on your soldier's shit aim.

What i propose is that you watch a few tutorials about maya animation, then pirate maya, then look at the Xcom2 animation tutorial that anon posted, then go to the SDK, find one of the human soldier fire animations, export that animation, edit it in maya so instead of firing his rifle normally he does like a "sweep" with it, import it back(as a different animation, don't replace the existing one) and there you go, flamethrower animation.

In all honesty, with the smallest possible knowledge of animation this should be perfectly doable and relatively easy. In fact, i think if you are starting from 0 you are going to have more trouble with the whole coding side of making a new class.

Yes and no. Technically the way a railgun works is by launching the case around the round, which breaks away from the round as it leaves the chamber. The round itself doesn't actually have any magnetic properties, but the casing around it has neodymium runners along the sides. The electromagnetic coils don't actually pull or attract the magnets, but they are placed reversed and so they repel them, shoving it forward with ludicrous force.

That being said, because the case breaks away from the projectile after leaving the barrel, it wouldn't need an ejection chamber.

What would having a snake tail even accomplish? I guess it lets you constrict enemies, but since mission timers exist there is no reason to sit in place for a couple turns to kill an enemy. In fact, I feel like having a tail would be more inconvenient than having any practical purpose.

In practical terms, a successful constrict takes an enemy out of the fight in one shot (and your Viper until you shoot the guy she's holding, but hey). This ability's really good at getting tough ADVENT soldiers out of cover, neutralizing Avatars and on missions with no timer (see: mopping up Guerrilla missions, ADVENT facilities, story missions, supply raids)
They also seem to be able to fall a fair distance on their tail like a spring.

Well it's been so long since I played, that I actually did it wrong. Fortunately I lucked out and killed two of the three pod, with the third running away.

In theory what you do is have your troops just outside of enemy los while in concealment, and then have someone break a window, or bust open a door, to break concealment and trick the AI into patrolling towards you. As you can see though I totally forgot about the critical part where I can't see the enemy.
It should give you the preferred method of activation where ayys patrol into you and you get a full round of overwatch before engaging.

No this works differently. The original Beaglerush maneuver just had you sit someone just out of spotting range in no cover. The ayys would patrol into you and the activate, giving everyone a turn of overwatch. They fixed this by making it so that ayys have a chance of just straight up shooting your guy.

This one does the same thing, but takes more setup and can be used in less circumstances. You also need to be out of the enemies los, unlike the original method.

Obviously it depends on the alien mod, if you go by individual alien mods you'll have to read what they do and decide for yourself.

That said, the LW alien pack, ABA2 and Spectrum all make the game considerably harder, with ABA2 and Spectrum being the hardest, LW alien pack isn't "that" hard. Also know that ABA2 comes with improved AI, so don't get that if you are scared.

Alien Hunters can be extremely hard, but if you play with the DLC enabled, you don't fight the rulers until you trigger them by doing their mission, it also comes with new weapons.

In Shen's last gift you have to go through a mission to get the new class, but while it can be hard, it isn't unreasonable, although i would recommend you wait until you have mag weapons if you're not sure.

No idea, the strategy layer is a bit more casual and the game is poorly optimized, but other than that i honestly don't see why anyone would want to play EU or EW instead of Xcom2. People also whine about a lot of missions having timers now but that's a retarded complaint, if it's that big of a deal there's multiple mods that change or remove timers, or you could just edit some .inis to make them longer or whatever.

That's assuming we're not talking about Long War, obviously there's still good reason to go back and play Long War, although personally i prefer making my own custom autism experience in Xcom2 with mods.

Well yeah I'm using mods, but I've scanned through my modlist a couple of times and I don't have any ones that change gameplay. Just failed my first mission because as soon as I cleared the first pod, I immediately got reinforcements called on me. That meant I needed to push through 3 pods with 3 enemies each just to reach the objective, and then there was one more pod. I'm not really sure what I could have done, rng meant I had to take an additional turn on the first pod. I'm trying to figure out where I screwed up, but usually it's obvious and I can't really point to anything on this mission in particular.

Hey guys, it's my first Commander run ever. I beat the game back near release in Veteran, but I haven't touched it in a while.

What would you do with this base layout?

Would you place the GTS in the starting middle top slot and then go through the trouble of relocating it later down the line (could you even do that? or do you have to dismantle it, and then rebuild it, and spend all that time without it?), or would you place a workshop there to dig one of the first row corners to then build the GTS there and then eventually delete workshop in favor of AWC or something else?

Yeah just plop it in the center, no need to relocate it later either. Remember that you only get 4 drones out of the workshop, so as long as you place the workshop next to 4 engi slots, it's as good as surrounding the workshop with every building with an engi slot.

How do you deal with a building like the one on the right? It's too big to demolish, most of the time there will be no ayys in it so it's kinda pointless demolishing it anyway, but one in a couple missions you just lose a guy to a flanking shot from places like that.

Just got this in Long War. Mid-June of the first year, landed scout. 21 fucking aliens, including my first Cyberdisc and Berserker of the campaign.

Was it a trap UFO? Don't think I've ever gotten one before.

Take peaks from the windows and check the roof from the distance. if there is nothing, then go for the rest of the map(the AI is not that good at crossing doors).

To breach go to one corner and use a machinegun, explosives or wathever you can(and of course have everyone prepared with full AP and maybe a shield... as usual) then send the squad(always on reserved APs for reaction shots) and that should be enough.

I usually don't even bother wasting APs on smokenades for this.

Thats for infantry, if you are like me and like tanks use the missile tank to create the breach and then again(because fuck civilians) and with the big hole you just created the infantry can explore the interior from a safe distance(and behind the tank or in a long line next to it if you prefer inmediate firepower and reaction)

If there is something inside, it will probably go for the tank and either failing, damaging it or destroying the tank(although this is not that common). But it usually ends dead, exposed or weakened.

For long war... thats a pretty normal number, I have had missions of 30 lmaos and more.

Although, if its your first run in long war, numbers are deceiving, the real thing is the aliens evolving in health and damage specially some titanicAyyylium that you should encounter in a few months.

That will be an encounter to remember.

Got it during the sale and just finished my first Normal campaign. Not sure why it gets so much hate here, I fucking loved it despite not playing the old X-Com games. My only complaint was that it was too short.

Fuck psionic shit in that game though. Namely mind control, the rest is fine. Pure RNG shit with 0 counter-play beyond cheesy shit like "put your guns on the ground" isn't fun at all.

I haven't seen hate, it just has so few players that when someone asks a question they almost never get a response.

Personally I don't like it because I find the tactical layer tedious. The idea and atmosphere of the game are great, but the tactical missions involve so much fiddling if you want to avoid random deaths that I get bored before I'm done with the first one.

It's kinda like the timers in X2 everyone complains about, except while the timers wear on you they at least increase the amount of action. Constant fog threat both pressures you and makes you play slower/more defensive.

I actually liked the slow pace. Crawling across the map, looking for cover, putting shields in place and living in constant fear of engagement was a very pleasant change of pace from the BRING ME MORE ALIEN FODDER killfrenzy that is XCOM.

Why is the last room of the final mission so fucking bullshit, bros? It feels like if you don't bring along a squad of Psi Operatives and a small army of Dominated aliens, you don't have a very good chance of winning. Everything up until that final room is great, you face increasingly-difficult swarms of pods and make good use of all the gear and abilities you've picked up along the campaign. Then you get to the last room and you have to take out three Avatars that teleport after each hit while fending off seemingly infinite spawns of aliens in a room with garbage cover and a layout so bad that you somehow lose LoS of enemies that are just a few meters away from you.

I'm playing on Commander Ironman and this is the first and only time the game has gone from "satisfying and fun difficult" to "bad game design difficult." Either just the three Avatars or just the spawning aliens would have been fine, but not both. Only one soldier died in the entire campaign up until that one room and then a total squadwipe massacre. It's just weird. Even if you do do it right, you're railroaded into one very specific manner of playing that's at odds with the rest of the game.

I have the option to restart the mission despite being on Ironman but it just doesn't feel right.

Yeah it's hard. What I do is run a rapid fire ranger with talon rounds. Use whatever abilities necessary to flank the avatar then delete it. Repeat two more times. Meanwhile the rest of the squad focuses on stalling. Commander MC's something, specialist hacks, if you can dominate a gatekeeper, you'll get a huge body and lots of zombies to stall.

Having a full finished game to work on top of is an incredible running start.

Besides - Jake & Co have to cater to the mainstream audience. They hold in their hands a very peculiar responsibility. The game is marketed to be hard and challenging, but most consumers don't want it to be actually hard. Most of them want to be able to play through it on Rookie/Veteran without much care in the world, with the ocassional tense moment here and there that they're gonna savescum the moment somebody diesf and then be able to claim to their friends "Duuude XCOM was so hard and tense, I loved it, just beat it last night".

Jake & Co doesn't really have to cater to us masochists that actually like difficulty and understand that losing and learning from your mistakes can be fun. That's where Long War devs come in, along with all the other modders that buff/add enemies etc.

If XCOM was developed from the ground up by Jake+Lump, it might run the risk of being a somewhat commercial failure while still being a really complex and challenging game

Terra Invicta is going to be a very niche title, and I sincerely hope it's a great game so that it can get promoted via word of mouth from masochist to masochist. Because it's definitely not gonna be a mainstream thing unless they add some sort of normal EZ mode

Alien Rulers are a very good concept. A challenging boss unit is hard to make in xcom since just loading it with pure stats usually just means it is too hard or too easy and not that interesting.
Introducing a mechanic that actually makes people panic when one of the rulers show up in their mission (yet they are still beatable) means they are a well designed challenge boss imo.

I was using this in slightly different version (1-2 turns added) combined with "True Conc" mod aka "timers dont start to count until you go out of hiding".

It really matters if you have fun with your game or not.

And yes, I believe timers in "vanilla" state are bad and forces rushing rather than strategy.

I played og x-com alot and played through an entire campaign, so I would say pretty good. But it does have its weakpoints like most mods (and games). It's alot of fun, but it can get tedious if you get tech locked for a while.

Campaign is Long War tier in length for playing hours.
