whenever you catch a chinese item seller, you now can look at every item they've ever moved from their account to someone elses, and then you ban every single account that received an item from them

The way they "advertise" games is by spamming everyone, no one will buy your game because they'll think it's shitty shovelware.

Don't contact those fucks, go it solo, things will go slow but ultimately better than if you sold your soul to those pricks.

>how can i manage my sleep?
By being a fucking responsible adult, if you don't get tired by the time you should be in bed then you don't get enough exercise throughout the day
>>
>>165546160
Don't consume caffeine ~4 hours before sleeping. Not only does caffeine make it harder to sleep (which I'm sure you knew) but it also degrades the quality of your sleep.

Set an alarm and move to your bedroom (with no smartphone/laptop/tv) at a regular time every day.

Regular exercise / healthy diet helps you fall asleep faster.

Take powernaps when you feel your brain getting groggy. 15 minutes is literally enough to knock that shit away.

Just watched this talk https://youtu.be/xHG3-Nwc4VM and made some notes:

Design what the player can do first, what are his movement options? Offensive and defensive combat options?

After designing what the player can and cant do, design enemies with skillsets that complements the players abilities.

Always give the player incentive to to use his different abilities, but also give him a reason to not use them(by making certain enemies counter them, or by having enemies with resistances.)

The talk is pretty good, it can be a bit cringe, but the guy knows what hes talking about.

Learned something/10

>>
>>165546501
objects are heavy and using static images as an object is a waste of resources
you can get away with it if you have one or two of these but it's not preferable
backgrounds are better for simple repeating patterns, you could use them if you don't have many of these static images to place though but last time i checked you have little control over built-in backgrounds
consider using tiles since you can place them on any depth

Though you are right, this changed. They now contractually have to get your consent to make sales greater than 50%.

I've made a good $100 a month using them. Now, you may find that shit, but in my country that's pretty good. Games released at the same time as me, with similar quality, appear to have consistently done worse. Although I put a lot of love into my game... I know I'm still stuck in bargain bin tier.

People still buy the game off sale time, because for my tier of game at least, people aren't really shopping around much. Perhaps it's because I only ever get impulse sales.

Fuck you I'm not telling you the name of my game

Programmer
>>
>>165549735
A good programmer is easier to replace than a bad programmer who left weird shitcode all over.

A good artist can replace any level of artist below their own skill level.
>>
>>165549735
A programmer, in most cases.
The style of code doesn't really matter, a new programmer would only need to learn how all of the current code is working before they can start working on the game full time. If the programmer is also the game designer then it may be harder to replace since they also have the vision for the final game. A new programmer that has to design the game as well might want to take it in a different direction.

An artist usually has a unique style, and copying another artist's style for an entire game is not something many people can do well. However there are some artists that can pull it off.
>>
>>165550003

>>
>>165549735
>>165549997
>>165550003
>>165550006
Depends, if your art is highly stylized and the game is marketed for it, the artist is hard to replace

Programmers are more interchangeable if both the old and new programmer are good, it's a shitstorm if either are bad
>>
>>165550073
That's like saying you know a few great sculptors who can't into painting.
>>

Qualifying the replaceability of a programmer with whether they're good or bad at programming is a cop-out. Obviously someone who leaves things a shitty mess will be harder to clean up after.

How can I improve the sounds?
>>
>>165550240
That totally depends.

Code is fairly universal. Traversing some shitty code can be a fucking mess but its doable by basically anyone.

Art is harder to quantify. If its heavily stylized you wont get an artist to easily replicate it unless they are an amazing artist. You'll often be able to pick up on the "who did what" of the art assets which can be immersion breaking.

An artist still needs to be able to modify some things in a game, like colors, layout, sprites, level design, and animations. So if a programmer is using a framework and has everything hardcoded or with some shitty hard to use editor then that just makes it hard for the artist to work on stuff.

Godot was developed with everyone in mind. The editor is designed to be easy to use, easy for programmers to export modifiable variables, easy to use animation tool. And it all works with version control.

Of course other popular engines also feature these sorts of things.

Surprsingly what workd for me was opening a google doc, write 2-3 lines what the core idea of the game is (the game loop) in my case:

Roll level bonuses->Do a level->get upgrades->buy loot->play again

Then i wrote Alfa and listed what features i would need to make a basic playable build (movement, 2 enemies, 1 level etc).

Below i wrote Bugs, where i filled in what bugs i find.

Then i just highlight added stuff in green. oddly worked really well and it's motivating to see all the green.

Implemented beam effects and hitscan attacks. I simply spawn a particle and start by setting the height to the distance of the trace. I then rotate it by the player's pitch and yaw. Next, I rotate it 45 degrees by the axis of the trace so it's more visible. Finally, I move it forward by half the trace distance (because the particle's center is the player's position)

The issue right now is that it's still a single stretched quad. When I get a "real" texture in place, I might need to break it up into multiple particles so that the stretching doesn't look ridiculous.

so im learning godot and coming from game maker.

in game maker, you can create a single object and then create multiple instances of that object in code on the fly, or just place multiple instances of that object directly in the room editor.

is there a way to do this kind of thing in godot? im still new to the whole node thing and afaik you need a separate node for each instance?

How would you spice up a generic platformer?
Some guy suggested adding collectibles, but I feel that would disrupt the flow of the game, since you'd be stopping or backtracking for something when you're supposed to be going fast to the finish. The game feels good but I think it still needs something.

You can create new scenes, which have a node at the root that is the parent to all other nodes in that scene. When you save the scene somewhere, you can use this in code to create a new instance of the scene object:
var object = load("res://PATHTOYOUROBJECT").instance()
When you then use
add_child(object)
it becomes part of the scene tree.

I recommend downloading the demos and looking at "Instancing Objects".

Is it just a run from A-B kind of platformer?

Then you need to have really interesting movement mechanics.

I think grappling hooks are always the best kind of movement mechanci because they require skill to use and reward knowledge of the levels and skill.
>>
>>165557070

Add some juice. Get a good soundtrack going. Get some variety in the levels. Maybe add some special powers to mix it up.

That's pretty much the only things Super Meat Boy had and people raved about it. The gameplay was literally just point a to point b.

Yes, there's art direction in even a generic humanoid silhouette. If there wasn't, you're being dumb and all your generic humanoids will blend together.

In the beginning stages, sure.
Once your game concept is defined, you need to start asking yourself some important questions before you start adding features -

Are you able to implement it in a reasonable amount of time? (especially relevant if you're 1MA)
Is it fun or does it positively improve the experience?

Gods, I hope my demo doesn't get that high. Thankfully, it seems like nobody cares that much about it. I'd rather it not be seen by the general public in its present form.
>>
>>165566672

Fuck off retard. It doesn't matter that there wasn't any winter jam. That doesn't magically mean comfy jam is cancelled. And how do you know if the hype has died down? Everyone is just waiting for it to start, do you want us to spam the thread with comfy jam until it starts?
>>
>>165566789
Alternatively, make missiles very smart, so avoiding them becomes next-to-impossible and shooting them down while also trying not to get picked off by the player who launched them is what dominates the game.
>>
>>165566687
Christ, now that I've looked for it I can see it's above Among the Sleep in the Horror category.

I'm not sure I'm ready to go above #50 in there and I'm sitting at #57 as-is.

I don't have a logo. Do you mean the UI?

To be honest, I was the original proposal of a comfy jam, but it was comfy forest jam at first. It lost against lewd jam, and when the next poll was linked, it was truncated to just comfy jam.

My original idea was to have games in a nice forest. Fishing games, walking sims, point 'n' click adventures, hidden object games etc.

I'm sorry that it didn't turn out to be that interesting or inspiring after all.

I can't get myself to code anymore without art now. Probably because in the past years I've made all kind of game prototypes that I like already. The whole do it with placeholders only work to some extent.

Right now I'm just trying to find a complete free asset pack to make a small game to kill some time but there's nothing interesting, which is amusing when people like to throw around that "you can find tons of free assets", they never mention that you can't finish anything interesting with them.

Kid AI is almost done. Gotta make him care about random shit happening and some other events, but general routine of his is done (playing PC games, sleeping, walking around, being alerted by the dog and panicky escape to exit).

Also if he is walking already somewhere his path will continue normally if he goes back to sleep or PC.

I'm switching the states with debug controls.

Something has to be checked in the first place to fire the trigger, but the difference is in doing the check, then setting a flag, and then checking that flag everywhere instead of doing the check and immediately firing off callbacks.

It's a co-op game where one guy can see the monsters with the cameras and has to guide the other player through objectives. FBI/CIA/whatever dude in the level can't see the monsters directly, so he has to rely on the hacker to guide them around. The hacker has different vision modes to help him see around the map and locate the enemies better.

I hate when people talk about "true ending".
When you play game that changes ending because of your decisions and choices this is your ending adjusted to you. You can always check "What ifs" but it is not true and only ending.
>>

Things like RMAH and pay2win content is in direct conflict with fun.
It leads to boring time-sink content in order to get people to buy a shortcut instead of playing the game.

When the RMAH was a thing in D3, it was almost impossible to get any good gear while playing. If you wanted to be on top you HAD to spend real life bucks.

Now the game is actually fun, and not a miserable grind with no payoff.

I feel like I've bitten off more than I can chew.

Suppose I wanted to make a fluid (gas, in my case) simulation in Unreal for a halfway-complex physics game, how would I go about that?
The minimum I hope to achieve is a simulation of pressure and resultant airflow within player-editable environments (divided into static box cells for simplicity, players can build walls/flloors/ceilings and corresponding doors on cell borders), if feasible I'll consider temperature and gas composition.

Not the anon that posted it, or the animator, but if you've got a Television remote or something nearby give it a shot. First in front of you, then give it a shot behind the back, I got it twice after about twenty tries. It's awkward but doable.

A) fucked up while balancing the game
B) carefully crafted a balance state encouraging usage of the rmah

the answer is obviously A.

the rmah was blizzard attempting to make real money trading more secure for their players and sellers. you would know that had you played diablo 2, where real money trading had been a thing for years and people, sellers and buyers, were constantly being ripped off left and right. the rmah was the only way for trading to be even possible at all in the game.

Whether you want to accept it as canon doesn't change the official canon. If you reject the author's opinion the only way you can say it true is if you fanfiction that ending you prefer is the canon ending.

Death of the author is a humorous concept. "It doesn't matter what the author wrote, it's what I want to make up and what I make up you can't dispute because my fantasy trumps your authorhood." If you want to put your opinion over the author's over what's canon, you're basically claiming that you're the author. But there can't be two gods ruling over one world. There can be a Pretender to the throne -- but they'll always be a Pretender.

Some people may want 50 shades of grey to be the official canon for Twilight. That doesn't make it so. Some people want Tracer to not be gay. That doesn't make it so.

I want to have been the ultimate badass and to have taken over the world in Dark Souls. That is not the canon. I want to have been so strong I couldn't have been contained in the sword at the end of DS3. That doesn't make what I want canon either.

You have your story - the author's world has its own. Putting your story above the author's is worthless - you might as well just reject the whole story itself. I know english teachers love being able to say 'well my interpretation is the only one that's correct; what do you know, you're just the author' - but if english teachers were authors, they wouldn't feel the need to 'interpret' what they don't understand or don't like.

They don't care that they're wrong - they need to be right because they can't handle not being the master of the story. They want to be the dictators of the world and their character's role in it. Thank the gods that the author and other folks don't allow that because 99% of people are horrible at telling interesting stories.

Otherwise 90% of the canon stories in the world would collectively be about how Sonic saved the world in singular punches once he got real sad and shy-ly banged everyone in them but only romantically and he's still a virgin ok

can go suck a dick, and isn't accurate

canon doesn't matter, it has no authority, and doesn't even exist for 99% of works

star wars has a canon, the bible has a canon, some random video game does not have a canon

a canon is just a set of works set out by an author or even some other party that represents their intent, that's all, you don't have to follow it, apocrypha is not invalidated, and some random video game doesn't even make the distinction

>An author of a game says X is canon
>It is now canon

A canon is whatever events an author says actually happened in the intended storyline of events. Since we're playing games, we're liable to deviate from the storyline that the author will pull along from if they make a sequel - that just makes those our stories -- that doesn't make our stories the canon of the world's story.

If you don't accept a game developer saying 'Megaman is not a man, he is a robot', you're welcome to think so. However, you are flatly wrong. Most 'random video games' have lots of time put into their design and documentation. If anywhere in those design documents somebody wrote down the intended/expected timeline of 'actual events' - then those are the canon.

If Toby Fox came out and said 'The Canon ending of Undertale is the Corrupted Pacifist Ending', then that's the canon. Whether you follow it or not - it is the canon. I can't overstate this enough: Canon has ultimate authority. If you reject that authority you're not rejecting the canon, you're making your own world up and saying 'this world is actually that world'.
>>
>>165586342
>A canon is whatever events an author says actually happened in the intended storyline of events.

absolutely false, a canon is a collection of works that are deemed to be of import

the first fictional work to appropriate the canon terminology was star wars, this was to set apart the expanded universe novels such as splinters of the minds eye, shadows of the empire stuff etc. from lucas' works

star wars has an explicit canon, which not many other works of fiction does, ironically, most ideas about canons in other works are quite literally just fanwank

this was a new idea at the time, and needed because most other works in the 70's were the single body of an author, only star wars was whoring itself out to whoever wanted to write for it, necessitating the distinction, and it's a good way to explain to the fans this new concept of official and unofficial works telling different stories, and making sure they knew lucas was not beholden to follow those stories in his own sequels

that's all it means

You can reject what I wrote all you like. That doesn't make what I wrote less true because the accepted social consensus on what 'canon' means is 'the official lore', more or less. It's, in a few words the word of God - and whoever owns the lore is the God of that lore.

>>165587491
That's simple. The official canon is the Disney-approved canon. They own the works and so own the ability to declare whatever they like as canon or not canon. If you want to refer to the 'official pre-Disney canon' then you'd need to make such a distinction.

It's not rocket science. He who has 'the gold' makes the rules. Stamping your foot and yelling that you don't accept them doesn't make them 'not the rules'. You can take your ball home and play with it if you like - but that doesn't mean suddenly you've stolen fire from the Gods and now can do whatever you please with the canon.

If you want to declare what is or isn't canon with a particular game: Own the rights to it. If you don't and you're not the author, whatever you say doesn't matter as regards the canon.

>What you think doesn't matter to the canon.
and? canon doesn't mean anything, how difficult is it for you to understand this thing I'm telling you

there are no facts, it's fiction, canon is not fictional fact, it's fictional intent, and the intent of lucas, the intent of timothy zahn, and the intent of disney, these are different things, thats why different canons exist for them

if you don't care about that intent, and you just like dark forces and hate TFA, then that's all that matters, dark forces is star wars to you, TFA is not

it's fiction, there is no fact

not even that guy, the game looks pretty but the level design is atrociously boring

>canon doesn't mean anything
Sure it doesn't.

>it's fiction, there is no fact
In fact, because it's fiction, the only facts that matter are those that the one who commands the world says are facts. Otherwise, what is true or false, or has occurred or not occurred becomes impossible to discern.

If there was no canon, Dark Souls' sequels would follow the same format as Final Fantasy. There's no collective thread - no shared lore. They're just similarly genre'd games and that's all.

To have a sequence of events, or a storyline, there must be a canon. If there is no canon, there was no story. How difficult is it for you to understand this thing I'm telling you?

This is why the only opinion who's worth anything is the opinion of the person who holds the rights to the works. Whatever opinions Lucas had, his opinions are no longer the canon as he no longer is involved in the creation of said world.

Reject this all you like, that doesn't make it less so. I recognize that you 'refuse to be under the shackles of the canon-man' and that you want desperately to sell this 'we choose what the canon is because nobody can stop us' but neither of these things are true.

You won't determine the canon of the next souls game. The people who own the rights to it will. It will be recognized as an official game. Whatever lore you feel is the 'right lore' will not be recognized as official. That's all that matters.

whatever you chose to accept isn't a canon, you can certainly set down a canon of your own and hope others like your interpretation, but it's not necessary, and not any more or less authoritative than any other canon

you have to think outside of canons, do you not understand? it's not fictional fact. it's just a collection of works said to be important by some person or other

the ownership of the rights doesn't matter, why would it? the only thing rights matter is to who can legally create or approve copies of a thing for distribution, it's a purely legal affair, not a creative or interpretive one, fan fiction exists whether or not a rights holder wants it to

works exist separately from any canon they may belong to

canon is different from continuity, or setting

non canon works may well follow the continuity, canon works may well break from it

>not any more or less authoritative than any other canon

And about right here is where you turned off your brain.

"The author's canon isn't necessarily more authoritative!"

What utter tripe.

Using UE4′s built in damage interface-like system, bullets now apply damage and ships can now explode. That interface is definitely one of those things that I would have had to write on my own in Unity.
>>
>>165591028
it may be more interesting since the author probably has a greater understanding of the work, but it's not authoritative, no one can tell you what to make of a fictional story

you were claiming before that the rights holder, not the author, was more important, which is it?

If there is a rights holder that isn't the author, the rights holder is more important. I already clarified.

They become the de facto author. Now please let your horrible opinions sink into the permanent obscurity that page 10 affords.

are you jewish, by any chance? since you place legalism higher than reality
>>
>>165595596
I place reality higher than your fantasy, to be sure.

That's not how things being made work. The author doesn't get to tell the rights holder what they can and can't do outside of the contract they signed.

So yes, it is very much about legality. If you give your rights over to someone else, you have also signed over your creative input.

The author knows SHIT. Neither does the rights holder. Star Wars prequels aren't canon. Neither is episode 7 or rogue one.
