I don't think any of that changes any of what he said. I don't know how many people in this thread besides you have actually scripted missions using lua and MIST or anything, but I still don't think that so much of what would seemingly be core to the setting of a digital combat simulator are missing. I really don't like that we have to rely so much on the community to create features that should be included in DCS.

I will say that the mission editor is one of the best things about DCS, and it's impossible to deny how powerful it is and by how much it can be extended using lua scripts. There are very few games out there with this level of robustness and I do think on many levels ED deserves praise for that editor.

There isn't really a great solution to the shortcoming of DCS without some really hardcore re-writes to what I imagine is logic that has been carried over since LOMAC and maybe even before. I have a lot of thoughts on the subject, but at the end of day I still stand by my opinion that DCS is exceedingly dry and lacks purpose and focus. It goes beyond the mission editor/dynamic campaign issue, but that is a very large part of it.

For the record, I was the anon working on that IL-2 inspired game mode script. I think another anon came along and tried to do their own as well, but I know enough about working with scripts and mission editor that I feel like I can have a fair opinion on the subject matter.

>>
>>165515961
Yeah I was that anon working on an IL2 like mission for DCS. Mine was much simpler than yours though, mostly using triggers for the objective parts of it and other scripts for everything else.

Do you ever plan on continuing work on your version? I'd be happy to give a try at completing it if you aren't planning on it.

I'm inclined to agree with you I think a lot of the reason DCS seems to lack focus is because of the spread of modules across all time periods. Third gen and early 4th is undeniably the generations that DCS lends itself best to, and its great that we're finally getting more of those aircraft. More ground/ship/etc unit variety would be great too, hopefully we get more updates to that aspect after 2.5 is released.

It really doesn't help that the most popular server is the 104th. When BlueFlag is active however, DCS really seems to show what it's capable of, and it's a shame that its been inactive for so long. I assume round 10 will start shortly after the release of the Viggen.
>>
>>165517042
>Do you ever plan on continuing work on your version?
Realistically, I probably won't finish it. I'll give you the script though. The test we had some time ago proves that it already works, there's just some edge cases that need error handling to prevent script errors.

Feel free to take/modify what you need.
http://pastebin.com/fsYsiASS

>It really doesn't help that the most popular server is the 104th.
What's especially frustrating about that is that 104th is popular because it's popular. It's literally the only reason so many people play on it. The couple weeks that 104th was down already proved the playerbase would migrate to much more interesting servers if 104th wasn't around and for a time it was great. However once it came back, everybody dropped what they were doing and got back on 104th.
>>
>>165517621
Thanks, this script is pretty clever, nice work.

I'll see if I can get it working in a mission and test it out.

Your space sim stuff is pretty neato, btw.

>>
>>165517621

Nah dude. My algorithms prove its the best server.

Attackers have to have safe spaces because they are the first to join the server (???) If fighter players (???) show up, they'll kill the strikers and the strikers will leave the server making it never take off (?????)

Besides, F-15 vs F-15 is the most fun you can have in DCS(???????????????)

>>
>>165518440
Good luck anon. I think the idea is good, but it's so hamstrung by the fact that coordination is limited only to text. For example, being able to mark target areas on the F10 map would be a godsend, and it's so annoying that ED added a feature that conceivably could do that, but it can't be done by a mission editor.

Thanks. I've been trying to learn UE4 this past week to "expand my horizons."

Different sort of pedals mate.
Rudder pedals slide back and forth, they're not like the ones in your car.
>>
>>165544023
I know that, but wouldn't sliding rudder pedals input also work for land vehicles? If I'm buying pedals it feels pretty silly to use them in only one title.

In any case, suggestions for under $100? I really love rotary wing flight but they NEED pedals to fly efficiently.

Can you drive? Of course they wouldn't - they are just one axis remember. Unless you mean using the toe brakes and gas & brake, which sounds terrible.

CH pro pedals or a set of the Saitek ones, preferably the combat ones.
>>
>>165544318
Yes but that was on the pilots.
They should have spread themselves more and came in at different angles. The missiles aren't smart, they find the closest signature and lock onto it.

They would have done better if they had used Mavericks instead with such a clusterfuck of targets.

>>
>>165546938
Steam version is the same version, but is only compatible with keys bought from steam. Version from the online store can use keys bought off steam OR the ED store.

Use the standalone version, version 1.5.
>>
>>165547261
Huh, looking at the DCS account page it seems I bought two modules from their store page, the A-10C and UH-1H. Both are available in the Steam version I have downloaded.

If everything is available to me in the Steam version should I just use this? Any reason to use the standalone version?
>>

My guess is you bought them a long time ago, Steam stopped adding ED keys to their registry a key years back, but before that they worked.

New modules take FOREVER to arrive on the Steam, so unless you like waiting, get the standalone.

Alright, uninstalling Steam version and starting my download of 1.5 stable standalone.

I've been gone from DCS for about two years and quite frankly I'm surprised 2.0 is STILL in development. Wasn't it supposed to come out in 2016? At this point I've actually forgotten what 2.0 brings new to the table so whatever.

I'm browsing the DCS standalone store page and many modules say in bold "DRM key has 3 activations". What's that all about? If I reformat or something do I fuck myself?

It's a shitshow, 2.0 is here, but ONLY for the payware NTTR terrain (that you will have for free if you pre-ordered the A-10).

They're working on among other things, an overhaul of the Caucasus terrain with a new height-map which is holding up version """2.5""".

>>
>>165548207
The pedals are great for flight sims for their price, but if you want something for racing sims and truck autism you're probably better off with pedals dedicated to that... and includes a clutch pedal.
>>
>>165548340
>>165548250
Wouldn't the pedals still be better than pressing W and S to control ground vehicles though? I realize they aren't racing pedals, but surely they'd be better for driving than a keyboard is. I'd use them primarily for flying, but occasionally I like to let the autism flow through me in ATS.

Thing is, there are tonnes of people who don't play BoS, but they never seem to want to play anything instead. I can thnk of about 4 guys who would happily play BMS, more that would play DCS. But they never do, they just while about BoS as if ops are a zero sum game. Just because someone else is having fun doesn't mean you aren't allowed to.

I feel like I'm in the beginning days of simg trying to get people to play together, we knew we had enough people for ops, the hardest part was getting yothe autists to crawl out of their dark little holes and play with each other.
>>
>>165561379
>getting yothe autists to crawl out of their dark little holes and play with each other.
This.
If there are people playing BoS, and you want to play BMS, go ask the other people who aren't playing BoS to play BMS for fucks sakes.

Don't sit there screeching like an autist and throwing tendies about because others are having fun doing something you opted out of
>>
>>165561379
To add to this, you know how we get the BoS craze started?
The handful of us with it just started playing it and talking about it in the thread. Which is easily the best way to 'market' a game, have fun and make it look fun to others - they will want to join.

Whereas what we are currently witnessing is exactly how to turn people off playing a game - in this case BMS.
Screeching about how your video game is superior and how people should stop liking different things to you does not enamor people to your cause.

Back when we *did* fly lots of BMS ops, there were tonnes of screenshots and webms posted, now anons just see text based shitfits and it makes you all look like spergs that no-one wants to play with.

It looks nice in some ways, great effects etc. But much of it is smoke and mirrors masking lower quality textures and models to keep performance high.

Since ED doesn't care about performance their DCS planes have insane levels of detail, far higher than any other game. Too high I'd say, they model things no-one will ever realistically see with exacting detail, it's a waste of dev time and resources.

Some textures aren't as quality as they could be, but fuck me if the effects aren't spot on.

Tracers and rounds hitting aircraft look identical to WWII guncam footage. You can tell they spent a lot of effort trying to make it looks as accurate as possible.

The ground for Moscow maps looks better than the Stalingrad ones, especially Moscow winter.

The few places that have hills look great. (Especially compared to DCS's angular hills) Makes me super excited for the Kuban map which will have mountains.

Overall I'd say it has to be up there as one the best visually.

Also this gif looks like colorized guncam footage because of the resolution and frame rate:

I need help.

I bought Assetto Corsa on the christmas sale. I played it for a little to test it and see how it ran. It was all fine as far as I could tell.
I didn't play it for a while after that because no time. When I came back to it, I couldn't launch it anymore. Instead, it kept validating the files infinitely, looping back to validating again as soon as it finished.
I thought it could've been some car mods I got for it, so I ditched them and tried again but it was just the same. I ended up uninstalling and restoring from the backup I had, and this time it started launching fine again.
This was a couple days ago, but now that I wanted to play again it's getting stuck updating an apparently 6Mb patch, finishing the download, does nothing with it, the files dissappear from the download folder and asks again to download the update.

Here's a video from two years ago, not mine but it's the closest thing I found to anyone reporting something similar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeaR7xMew4g
Currently my problem is not with validation, but the principle is exactly the same in the way it's supposed to do something but it never really finishes it and gets stuck in a loop.
I tried validating manually but that made no difference.

Now I'm gonna try reinstalling again and see if it fixes itself again, but what's this about and why does it keep happening?

Is the Ka-50 not a modern helo?

I feel like people really overlook just how lucky we are to have gotten the Ka-50. A modern Russian attack helicopter that is the only one seat attack heli in the world, allowing you to fly it to its maximum potential without having to rely on another person or AI.

B-105 seems interesting, but its just an slightly more capable Gazelle to me.

Still waiting on that Hind and Cobra BST...

I'm wondering if I should get the A-10C module. I've got pretty comfortable with the Su-25T. I can use navigation and autopilot features, weapons systems, and fly fairly successful missions. The only other module I have any experience with is the A-10A which I'm still getting used to. It's hard to memorize key combinations and different control methods between aircraft.

The A-10C has a fully clickable cockpit so I'm quite intimidated by it to be honest. The only two aircraft I have experience with rely exclusively on key and control mapping since you can't click anything.

Your advice?

>>165634859
what kind of setup do you have? there are so many things binded to the HOTAS you probably shouldn't get if you have something with less hat switches than say, an X-52. the clickable part isn't really that bad though as most switches aren't used on most missions, and you'll benefit a lot from the fact that it has the most resources for learning it out of any module.

The PS2 games are the best in the series. 6 on the 360 is good, but not as good as the PS2 games. Infinity is some free to play thing I never played, so I can't say anything about it.

You can actually emulate the PS2 games now (at least 5 and 0 anyway). Ask /aceg/ about that if you want to go that route.

>Introduced in 1943, the PTABs were widely deployed from Il-2 Ground Attack Aircraft and also, due to the bomb's very low weight, from Yak-9 fighters, specifically from the internal weapon bay in the Yak-9b (Fighter-Bomber) modification. The Po-2 was also capable of carrying and deploying PTABs.

>The number of PTABs dropped in a given time period steadily increased thereafter. By the end of 1943, Soviet records show that 1,171,340 PTABs were dropped. In 1944, the number dropped was 5,024,822. In the first four months of 1945, a further 3,242,701 PTAB were used.

>The bomb itself was 2.5kg with 1.5 kg of explosives. The Il-2 was capable of carrying 280 2.5 kg bombs immediately on the bomb-bay folds, or 4x48 in four cassettes. The PTAB 2.5 was capable of penetrating 60 to 70 millimeter tank armor, at the time sufficient for the top-armor of even heavy tanks.

>>
>>165676584
Computer assisted shit.
>>
>>165676584
It's not FBW, but like *every* jet for decades it will have some sort of stability augmentation system. Remember that the F-15 isn't FBW but that still flies straight as an arrow thanks to a complicated system of mechanical dampers and autotrim.

It doesn't look very on rails to me, it looks like it has poor directional stability in some clips.
>>
>>165676584
For the time it had a very complex autopilot and navigation system that was kind of the precursor to a true FBW system.

>implying smoke is the same as smoke from a fire
Smoke from countermeasures has metal flakes and chaff in it to help block thermal imaging. In any case, smoke generally doesn't completely obscure the vehicle since there is almost always wind blowing the smoke away. Smoke has never been a super effective countermeasure for large tanks, even before TI was prevalent.

>smoke isn't an effective concealment

>The T-72 can either lay its own smokescreen by injecting a fine mist of diesel fuel into the exhaust manifold, or make use of its smoke grenade mortars. The former option is an an ingenious, inexpensive, extremely useful and near-inexhaustible source of anti-IR smoke cover - A little-known fact is that the smoke generated from this method is the temperature as the exhaust, thereby completely masking the tank's thermal signature. The only shortcoming of this system is the time taken to envelop the tank. A large number of battlefield maneuvers revolve around the use of this method of smoke generation for concealment.

Nevermind artillery shells producing large heaps of the stuff too.
You say "muh wind" but even back in WW2 the Soviets were laying walls of smoke that had their dimensions in kilometers. And then they'd lay them on top of each other as the tanks advanced so that everyone ended up being forced into a knife fight where German and now NATO long range advantages were made irrelevant and Soviet numbers made the difference.

The entire M1 and M2 families, both found in America's heaviest divisions, were fully equipped with FLIR.
By the end of the 80's, M60A3s would also be upgraded with FLIR, which reportedly was of higher quality than the M1's.
All earlier tanks did not have TI. M113s still made up the vast majority of the US' mechanized infantry units .

For the West Germans, thermal imaging wasn't introduced until the 1A5 came about towards the end of the 80's. Even then the vast majority of the Leopard 1 fleet were 1A2s and 1A3s.
Leopard 2s had them since the 2A1.
The Marder series of IFV which was popular in Panzergrenadier units had thermal imaging since the 1A2 and in all other respects were largely on-par with the BMP-2, up until the 1A3 in 1989 which outclassed the BMP-2 in almost every category.

In the British, they were only in the Chieftain MK 11 and then-new Challenger 1. The BAOR still consisted mostly of MK 10s and earlier, even by the end of the cold war.
Late versions of the striker ATGM had thermal imaging.
Warriors before the 90's never had thermal imaging. FV432s were boxes just like the M113s.

Across the board, the TOW-2 introduced in 1983 were universally equipped with thermal imaging. The Soviets were particularly concerned about anti tank weapons like these and tactics thus called for fucking them with artillery that mixed HE and WP (WP being thermally opaque smoke).

Air support was also largely equipped with thermal optics. Any fixed wing that could sling Mavericks had them, and helicopters from the Cobra to the Lynx were also beginning to field them. To help defeat this, the Soviets developed Nakidka in 1971 which was effectively a big tarp that you could throw over the tank to mask it's thermal signature somewhat. They would have used them more in columns on the march as opposed to units in combat.

tl;dr Thermal imaging wasn't widely proliferated in the NATO armies until ~1985 onwards, and even then large amounts of forces still had older gear.

Haven't played in months.

Have they released Normandy yet, or at least a release date? More importantly, have they released any WW2 assets so the P-51 and other modules that have been out for years are playable and aren't doing ground strike missions against BMPs and BTRs.

Have those retarded slavs worked out how to add a mission select screen so you don't need two 70gb installs to play both maps?

Is /fsg/ still run by autists who fly into a rage at the drop of a hat?

Any words on the new effects we were supposed to get with 1.5/2.5?

Now, I'm sure you're new, and quite young (as evidenced by your 'maturity'. But RRG studios, the break away unit from IL-2 CloD and led by producer Iliya were originally supposed to expand the WW2 front for DCS. But shit hit the fan with them and they disbanded, ED was left with having to scrap everything they did and start over.

Now, there's nothing stopping 3rd party modelers from making WW2 ground units either. So, maybe it's time for you to open up 3dmax and get crackin', and stop complaing about something that originally wan't supposed to be pary of DCS in the first place and was given away for practically free when it was first released.

Battle of Kuban gives you 8 aircraft and the Kuban map, plus some other small maps.
Thats 69.99. So for almost the price of a brand new DCS module, you get that.

Collectors give you 2 more collectors planes on top of that.

What is the confusion here.

>I paid $90 to get two more planes and I'll defend this decision because I dont want to admit muh buyers remorse

I haven't bought it though so your buyers remorse argument is dumb.

The extra money is for the collectors edition planes. If you buy the regular one, you can buy the collectors edition planes by themselves, but it will be more.

Once again, I don't understand the issue.

Two prototypes were built, flight tests starting in March 1944.[12] On 30 March, Commander Valentino Cus reached speeds of 690/700 km/h (430/440 mph).[20] Official maximum speed was 685 km/h (426 mph) and the aircraft was armed with three 20 mm MG 151/20s, one firing through the propeller hub, the other two installed in the wings.[21] While performance was excellent, the aircraft proving superior to both the Bf 109K and Bf 109G and Fw 190A, outmanoeuvring [3] all types in testing, production was not allowed by the German authorities.[12]

>no forward firing guns
>not a spit

Into the trash it goes.

I stand by my theory that a fighter with a ball turret in the nose is unbeatable.

The pilot doesn't worry about aiming, because his ball turret bro takes care of that.

You also fly in pairs with the a variant that had a ball turret in the back to protect the one with the turret in the front.

You can not defeat this.

The problem with the Defiant, as well as no forward firing armament, was the same problem as the Fairey Battle - you're whacking a dirty great big lump of weight aft of the wing, fucking CoG and turning a light swan into an obese duck.

It won't climb as fast, it won't fly as fast, it won't turn as fast, and once the opposition stops laughing, it will do the only thing it would be capable of doing faster than a Spitfire - dying

You mean you want to bind all of them to your hotas making the game effectively a war thunder clone.
>>
>>165740672
>this shitty bait
I'll bite anyway though.
I only bind combat controls and flight controls to the HOTAS. Even in the Fishbed I don't have the weapon select panel bound to it at all, only fire and radar controls
