It's got all of brogue's strong points, but not its weak ones. The UI is great, the dynamics and the AI are staggeringly good, kinda like Forays and not as annoying as Smart Kobold, so you're safe there. It's got Food/Water/Stealth/potions/wands... really a lot of stuff.

It's basically a Brogue fork, and a great one at that. I can't wait to play it again.

The Juggernaut of Khorne outside the antimagic cave is a melee-only punching bag, and as long as you don't completely kill it it refills to full hp each time you go >< on the dungeon stairs. In PCB you get xp just for damaging monsters (although less than for killing them), so you can repeat this forever for lodsofEXP

It really only works with dedicated casters/breathers, since the dungeon guard has reflection. If you have ideal conditions (beam/ball damage) then it's an easy way to get from about 8-28. But just a wand/bow isn't going to be worth the time.

Fake MuMo (with bucklers and amulets) after 2 runes, Elf and Crypt cleared. Since I'm playing trunk, I'm really scared about stat drains in abyss because self restoration has been gone for two major releases or so now. I also have no idea how am I going to melee a greater mummy while surrounded by its scorpions and/or scarabs, but that comes later I guess.

You stairdance. You can stairdance all of tomb, actually that's the only way of doing it in your conditions.
Lure one GMu at a time towards a staircase while he's on the edge of LOS so he doesn't summon shit and follows you, then dance the dance of the stairs.

Also, leave vaults as your last rune. I'm serious. Clear Zot before trying to do V:5. It robs you of the gift of the stair, which is the greatest curse of all.

If you get a good 1H blade, like a eudemon blade or a double sword. But they're fairly rare (even via gifts) so it might not be worth the trouble.

Although actually, now that I think about it, the good 1H swords will probably generate if you're using a shield, but that'll also mean you'll have to use the less-than-good swords with potentially cumbersome shields in the meantime.

I'm just bullshitting -- and, specifically, I was talking about gifts.

God gifts tend to be a mixture of what you've trained in skills and what you're currently using. Without looking at the code, I'd assume that you're a bit more likely to get acquirement-level one-handed weapons if Trog/Oka see that 1) you've been training your Shield skill, 2) you've only been using one-handed weapons and shields at the point when they decided to do a weapon gift.

But even that logic seems flimsy, so I don't know. I'll check to be sure, though.

I guess priest magic. The only things i've seen so far are the "sacral weapon" buff and, if you pick it as your primary skill, a self-heal

Fun fact: If you have "retaliate" you get the option to retaliate at anything whose attack you block
apparently you can block your OWN self-buff spells, at which point the game asks you whether you want to stab yourself

I ended up enabling nightmare, always *fun* rooms and a bunch of horrible things, except disabling recall and selling to the shops. Basically every level is a huge empty hall with a vault with uniques and monsters 60 levels above me.

It's a way to make late game harder by reducing the amount of available xp, but honestly it's pretty stupid since the game will still be relatively easy in the later parts until they do something radical like dropping Lair and most of Vaults/Crypt/Elf altogether. It also has an additional problem of forcing races into certain builds relying on better apts, reducing possibilities. Maybe that's why the flattened the ogre apts and made the new race pretty flat too.

3rd win ever; a consecutive win; and 5 runes!

Cheibriados is surprisingly fun (and, IMO, very powerful) to use. The big thing is that you have to adopt Chei's attitude: take it easy. Let things come to you (and blast them with magic/wands in the meantime).

Also my first time entering a Treasure Trove(!), which required the Slimy rune to enter. Mostly a weak trove, though, besides one ring that proved useful.

I'll definitely admit luck was on my side, though: I got like 5-6 Acquirement scrolls by the time I entered Zot, and at least 3 of those acq. items had endgame utility: a +12 Crystal Plate Armor randart with +3 Dex; the chopping Executioner's Axe (that was Lair, I think), which I eventually enchanted to +9; some very useful jewelry that covered rElec and rCorr; and I suppose the antimagic battleaxe was pretty useful, too.

Interestingly, I never had more than rN+ or rF+. And I spent quite a bit enchanting some gold dragon scales with the intent of replacing them with the CPA, but I never got around to doing it. I literally just covered any needed defenses with a basic ring of protection from [fire/cold/negative energy] as soon as the danger appeared.

That's about all of your slots, oops! Time to remove all potions and scrolls you'd use situationally maybe once or twice in the game, because what's the point of having them if you're never going to carry them around anyway. Bye bye silence, holy word/torment, ambrosia, immolation, vulnerability and a few others.

Instead of removing number of slots, which will only make a bunch of things useless (no space) and force you to make trips to your stash every 5 minutes, reduce the spawn rate.

It doesn't work when there are no decisions. Fog is always good. Fear is always good early on. Heal wounds is always good. Blink is always good except maybe in Zot. Tele is always good. Haste is always good, and so on. Realistically you'd have at most 5 slots for decisions, and these decisions would be more about whether you want to carry a ring for swapping or a potion of resistance. Of course you can choose to carry something else, but that's just handicapping yourself. You'd need a severe rebalancing of consumables for your idea to work - and even then going back to stash every 5 minutes would be horrible.

Which game? Crawl?

Pound for pound, you don't need to read a wiki, but you don't want to put time and effort into a run just to die doing something incredibly stupid.

With Crawl, you can at least look everything up in-game, albeit without too much detail: "x=v" to look up descriptions, pressing the suggested keys to look up enemy spells, "?\" (I think?) to look up almost any individual thing of interest.

And then, of course, there's the issue of where to go and what to generally do. You *can* technically figure it out for yourself, but learning the basic walkthrough blindly will result in a LOT of deaths. Also, wikis and spoilers can help you stay alive and have more fun with basic survival tips.

Well, let's be honest here. I didn't expect to actually live through the first dungeon I visited.
Also this psion was kinda weak, I ended up burning through my SP way too fast. I guess they get stupid strong at level 50 once they get mindspring going, so they regen something like 60 mana per turn, but before then you're pretty much a glass cannon that has to retreat fast to another staircase.
I think I'll try another combo with the same setup, it might work better.

Stairdance to bring him in closer and then Heroism/Finesse to kill. A cyclops is only truly dangerous when throwing their bigass rocks, and you're literally on some stairs, so you'll be fine.

Hell, you can even quaff your lignification potion if you're really scared. The AC and HP boosts will be more than enough to survive as he approaches.

Is this your first time reaching Zot?

I recommend clearing it first (including Zot:5) before peeking into The Slime Pits or The Crypt. Slime technically isn't game-ending levels of dangerous, but you'd be surprised at how much it can fuck your shit up (mutations, corrosion even with rCorr, etc.), and that's ignoring The Royal Jelly. Slime is mostly devoid of treasure until the very end, requiring you to defeat or avoid TRJ, neither of which you should do if you aren't capable of or confident in clearing Zot.

The Crypt is also a lot more dangerous than it seems, especially if you don't have strong/fast Holy Wrath weapons and/or are following The Shining One. The Crypt also has shitty treasure vaults, so you're unlikely to get anything good there except XP.

If you've reached Zot, you more likely than not can win the game. Just be sure to have the right resistances at the right time, and be able to kill draconians. I'd say the most dangerous enemies in Zot are Orbs of Fire (HUGE fire damage *and* malmutations, including teleportitis, which can be game-ending for a noob), Ancient Liches (highly damaging magic, occasionally has demonic summoning spell sets, too), and Curse Toes (one of the few non-summoned sources of Torment in a regular 3-rune game; can be quite the shock if you aren't prepared).

Each of those enemies are dangerous, but you have to understand that you'll be dealing with slightly weaker forms of their most annoying/dangerous aspects in all non-standard game branches, and they'll have the option to surround you and do some bad shit to you.

Currently a halfling berserker of Trog. Found an amulet of Rage and Trog probably can't give me anything better in terms of gifts (Got a +9 quickblade of Elec and +9 Quickblade of Antimagic). Man, psions are stupid strong when they get to level 50.

-ravenous/amphibious are not huge issues. if you take ravenous you probably need to skill butchery or harvestry early on.

I died. I got to Depth: 7 along with my trusty ogre comrade. We formed a telepathic bond while he learned the spell Protection, along with the ability to sap strength upon hitting enemies. The stairs to go downward were deep in a bog filled room. I attempted to venture in, only to be caught by a Bog Monster. It latched onto me, and it took quite a lot of effort (and Protection casts) to finally get free and escape. In that same room was explosive gas. I remembered the incendiary darts I picked up on Depth: 2. I threw one and waited for the fire to die down. Upon re-entering, I was caught by a Bog Monster once more. Already injured, I was unable to escape and met my end.

I guess I should try out DCSS.

Let me save you some time. If you're a tabber, level your weapon skill until you're hitting at 0.8 AUT per strike. Turn it back on as you upgrade weapons. When you're at 0.8 aut, turn on fighting, dodging, and armour, and leave them on until you upgrade your weapon. This isn't the most optimal way to do it but it's close enough and it requires less micromanagement. Do this until Orc, then get your weapon to mindelay, then go back to fighting, dodging, and armour until they're maxed.

MiBe is the easiest tabber character, but it teaches you bad habits because of how strong it is. Don't press the tab key unless something is next to you, you never want to advance into an unexplored area because you don't know what's in there. Always draw enemies back to a corridor so you can fight them one-on-one. Carry an id'd wand of digging so you can make corridors when there aren't any.

While we're on the topic of IDing things, read all your unID'd scrolls at the end of each floor, and then use your scrolls of ID on your potions. Never quaff-ID potions as a mutation can ruin your run instantly.

Also, if you're using an edged weapon, you'll cut the head off of a hydra when you hit it. When you open up your skills page, you'll see some melee weapons are green, which means the weapon you're using cross-trains with them. Always carry an alternate non-bladed weapon of one of these schools so that you can deal with hydras easily. A good example is if you're an axe-user, always carry something like a dire flail, which won't decapitate hydras. Long Blades are a little different as they only cross-train with short blades, which, although they're blades, do not decapitate hydras.

That's really all you need to know, everything else is just figuring out what can kill you and what the appropriate response to it is.

This run, I'm a Human Wanderer. It actually had some decent starting items. Right now I have a +1 spear of freezing that can extend its reach, a ring of stealth and a ring of resist corrosion. I also know the spell Infusion and have a book to learn Regeneration. To top it all off, I have a scroll of teleportation.

It's not so much that it teaches bad habits, it's more that it's just so strong that once you've played it you'll underestimate threats with every other melee character you play since none of them are quite as diesel as a MiBe. It's a rule of thumb for beginners. It's not very clear for a typical newbie what each skill does exactly, so this way is usually recommended.

In general:
- Weapon skill reduces the amount of time required to swing/fire your weapon (important) and adds damage (less important). Training to your weapon's min delay (see your weapon description) is *very* important, after that not so much.
- Fighting skill adds to max HP (important) and adds damage (less important, and less damage than weapon skill)
- Armour skill improves AC you get from wearing armour and reduces evasion and to-hit penalties from heavier armors. Obviously more important with heavier stuff.
- Dodging skill improves your evasion. Better if you have lighter armour, but even in the heaviest you should train Dodging eventually.
- Shields skill improves your SH and reduces attack speed, evasion and to hit penalties from using a shield. Each shield type has its own threshold after which there's almost no point in training the skill further, so check your shield's description if you use one.

All other skills aren't necessary to win a pure fighter, so I'm not going to bother.

Level up Str until you are at ~120% of your body armor's ER (listed in the description), Dex after that.

Best races (for pure fighters): Minotuar > Gargoyle > Troll > Hill Orc. Deep Dwarves are great too but play differently from others. Start with one of recommended weapons. Backgrounds: Berserker, Fighter, Gladiator, Monk. Gods: Trog, Okawaru

Two-handed weapons > one-handed weapons. Generally superior damage is better than superior defences because 1) you want to 1v1 only if possible, 2) SH is worse than AC and EV, 3) they can't kill you if you kill them first. Still, shields aren't bad because they allow you more time to realize you fucked up and escape.

After you clear D:3, read the biggest stack of scrolls you have. You need to find scrolls of identify. If it's not identify, read the next biggest one. Once you find identify, use them on potions. Don't quaff unknown potions unless in emergency.

If you need to run, scroll of blinking is the best. Scroll of teleportation is what you'll use the most often as it's most common but watch out on unexplored levels. Another option is potion of haste. When running from archers or mages, use scroll of fog - *if you can't see the enemy, it can't attack you*, and sufficient amount of fog blocks vision.

Typically the biggest stacks of scrolls will be identify, remove curse and teleportation. The biggest stacks of potions will be usually curing, heal wounds and degeneration.

Whenever you take an action (walk, hit something, put on equipment, remove equipment, etc.), you can see how long it takes in the "Time:" part of the status area in the top right. If your delay is inbetween two specific aut units, it'll fluctuate.

The simple formula is just:

Base delay*10 - (your weapon skill)/2 = how fast you swing in auts. Divide by 10 for time in turns, which is more standard.

So, let's say we have a weapon, an Axe, with base delay 1.3. Let say its minimum delay is 0.6, reached at level 14 of Axe skill -- this makes sense, since those two delays are 7 auts apart and it takes two skill levels to lower your delay by 1 aut.

Also, if it's not clear: "aut" = "a.u.t." = "arbitrary unit of time." An aut is a tenth of a standard turn, and a standard turn is the time it takes for most characters to move one square and for most enemies to attack you. We want to get our weapon skill to min-delay because that means you'll get in more hits per turn, which means you can deal lots of damage while your enemies are just standing there.

It's good to identify good wands too as identified wands run out of charges slower. Wand power depends on Evocations. If you're playing 0.19 or lower, best wands are hasting, heal wounds and teleportation, followed by enslavement, acid and digging. If you're playing 0.20 (trunk), best wands are clouds first and foremost, then digging, enslavement, scattershot and acid, then confusion/paralysis and iceblast.

Invocations is one skill I forgot to mention, it increases the power and chances of success of god abilities. Some gods don't use Invocations though - if you can't train it, you got one of those gods.

Threats (take it with grain of salt + I might've forgotten some):
always: player ghosts, uniques
D 1-3: adders*, gnolls
D 2-5: orc priests, orc wizards, ants*, scorpions*

Lair: death yaks, black mambas, spiny frogs
Orc: anything that's not an ogre or an orc type you've seen before in Dungeon

Even ignoring all of the nice tips people are giving, the most important things are:

1) Remember the goal of the game: to reach the Realm of Zot, retrieve the Orb of Zot, and then exit the Dungeon from the upward stairs in D:1.

2) With the above in mind, staying alive is your number one priority, WAY above killing enemies and other such things. You do have to kill for XP and it's generally a smart thing to do, but occasionally, it's best to just run away and stay alive.

This leads to some guidelines:
* Stairs (going to places you've already visited, usually upwards) are a great way to run away from enemies. Even if they follow you up by standing adjacent to you as you climb up, it's frequently better to fight on a floor you've already cleared out, so that you don't wake up nearby enemies.

* Hallways, corridors, and "kill holes" are generally the best places to fight, since it's impossible for enemies to surround you on all 8 sides. Limit the ways you can be attacked. Also, they're useful fighting areas since enemies with ranged attacks will (usually) try not to hurt other monsters.

* If you run into something dangerous, *don't* immediately try to attack it. Check what it can do (using "x"), and check if the game says it's (extremely) dangerous. You might be better off running away; in extreme cases, you might have to skip that floor and just dive down until you're strong enough to face it again.

* A super-useful tip is just to never walk towards an enemy if you can help it. Walking "into the black" means you'll make footsteps that will wake up monsters; it means you'll likely be farther away from hallways/corridors/etc. that you know to be safe; and it means you have a chance of being overwhelmed. So, either do "ctrl-directionkey" to just swing in a direction, or press "." to wait until your enemy approaches and then hit them.

As an aside, Generally it's more important to have 1 pip of resistance (pips are 50/66/80% reduction) than AC or ev. 2 pips marginalizes fire/ice clouds (portals to an ice cave/volcano) Normally you'll get these via a ring though so it's no problem most of the time.

Honestly I don't know if I would make it without the amulets I was wearing. First +6 SH early on was a huge help and I might have not made it in Lair where I had to run to from Erica and orc warriors at XL 9. Then the randart I was wearing with MR+++ made sentinels in Vaults non-issue, just when I was running low on teleports. The only buckler I wore on the other hand wasn't that important, though it was good nonetheless.

The char itself is likely good enough to take on extended but I didn't want to try, and some stuff wouldn't be doable anyway.

Basically, the key is knowing it's a bee level, waking them up with shouts/louts noises from a distance and fucking off so they can scatter into the floor in groups of 1-3 while you fight elsewhere. going into the madness that early is fault. Agility will unfuck your ev. Heroism will give you a little extra def and accuracy. Are you not playing trunk so you could have still disintegrated a killhole in the wall? Low/no skill enslavement/confusion could buy you time for an ambrosia. Once you're in a kill hole, your tree form will have ~26ac and rpois even though you'll be dropped to basically autohit ev and finesse will speed your attacks to help you when the troll claws yourapart.

no, base type is far more important than bonus +damage, and spear is a bad base type. Base type gets multiplied by str/dex/weapon skill, +damage is just added onto that after all calculations meaning it doesn't add much overall.

With patience, in the earlygame you can stairdance and spam sense surroundings until you can find a good vault with trash mobs.

The AC isn't really too bad, you're looking a 30/30 AC, EV in the endgame, so you could probably just go okawaru pretty easily, but makhleb is also a solid choice.

Draining is a brettygud brand.

In general, wide resistances don't really bridge the gap for weapons with crap base damage. You're usually better off just making do with what resistances you have. 90% of the time when you choose to fight, the best defense you can give yourself is a great offense.

I got shafted, and had battlesphere at like 12%, I casted it, got blasted for a ton of my hp, ran up a staircase then got fucked by an adder.

Obviously, it's bad play, but I see no real reason to play anything other then a tabber if every other playstyle is so fiddly and disjointed in the earlygame.

I don't really get how Evocations still exist when Bows and Crossbows do the job just fine and their ammo are both practically unlimited. Maybe bolts could get pretty rare during early game because yaktaurs don't appear by that time but 40 or 50 bolts with a +0 Hand Crossbow are more than enough to clear the entire Lair of Hydras.

Alright so here's the thing. Frost/fire's damage is just too low for it to matter as a common wand especially after the it no longer generates frost clouds nerf. Wand spellpower is too low for random effects, the only common wand that matters, the wand that's supposed to be the bread and butter of a talismancer to matter compared to just picking or being better at other shit. Because power is so shit, the hex wands are largely not a factor outside of corner cases or RNG kicking that 15% in. But often at that point you should have just zapped your id'd damage wands. This is then on top of random effects and the high level wands suffering from a severe shortage of charges and resists crippling the already crippled spell power of your zaps. They removed rods instead of making them zappable from inventory if binding your weapon and rod to a and b then using ' was too hard. The continued evoker nerfs removed another common evo tool so you felt like you got value. decks no longer being evo and no mroe floor decks removed an uncommon evo tool you could use to feel like it's doing something.

All they needed to do was make a L3-4 common damage wand, restore slow, and add more spellpower per evo on top of a better id rate, have it roll on 1st pickup, and not burn extra charges when zapped (rip bolt wands), so it could compete with the innate in bonuses and spc bonuses spells got.

The problem with wands is that they're inherently limited. Melee weapons are not, spells are not, and even ranged weapons can be replenished by randomly generated enemies. Wands on the other hand are consumed, and aren't even good enough to justify their existence as a consumable.

They need to either be making wand usage more sustainable, or make them significantly more powerful to justify the limited resources. The fact that they're doing neither and even nerfing the skill says that they have no concern for the artificer playstyle, and will probably just remove the skill entirely after stripping everything that made it possibly worthwhile in the first place.

Wands should be refillable with mana/nutrition in a somewhat time-consuming fashion (which can be automated like/with resting), rods should consume mana and nutrition to cast but have an innate casting rate. Both should be castable from inventory, but wands should be generally weaker because of the way they can be stockpiled. Artificer playstyle should be reworked so that they're always wielding a staff and maybe a shield. Make wands less common to make up for their lack of expendability. Scrolls of recharging would remain relevant for their ability to instantly replenish charges for either wands or rods and/or enchanting them.

What is even the point of Evo giving MP if rods are being removed?

They are continuously cutting floors ad infinitum using the reason of "tedium" so it makes sense that both the end and ideal result would be a single floor containing all of Crawl's content.

The main game also suffers from heavy luring and kiting which are problematic player behaviors that need to be fixed. Linesprint completely fixes these problems. More branches and empty space would just mean buffing the player's ability to lure and kite. A single floor and tight space is definitely the clearest solution
