What do you guys think about some abilities being unlocked behind difficulty modes.

keep in mind I'm considering implementing difficulty modes as more "arrange modes" rather than actually just making you do less damage and take more damage. Different level design, different bosses

So something like double jump may be available in the first playthrough. Then in thenext you may get double jump as well as air dash, but you can't chain them, then in the third game you can double jump as well as air dash.

Sadly, I think it was my own artistic failings that let the art down. Sprites in particular were a thing I just couldn't make well back then. I did some concepts for a more normally proportioned character -- but it wound up not looking great and I figured I'd rather have a nice chibi sprite than the mass of horrible I was capable of.

Not photoshop, but yes. I put a lot of time into that game's artwork, partly because as a consequence of doing most of the artwork in parallax I couldn't get repeating textures and etc.

Though there were locations I did make from scratch - but those were stranger places so I felt it was OK to break from the RTP artstyle wholly in those locations.

I really pity any profession without debugging possibilities. Doctors and the like can't exactly afford to push the scalp 5 inches further in the stomach to see what happens,they can't get to dissect every patient with a problem they can't solve, nor can they take out the heart and liver and put it in a different person to see if it's the liver at fault or something else in the body. 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds can look great if done properly, the issue with this is that the low resolution characters clash too much with the high resolution stuff like their own shadows or the water, plus they are overusing bloom and depth of field, like most AAA games do lately.

I would think that any engine with high-level networking would also provide a lower-level networking API that allows you to send data however you want.

Of course, it's ideal to have a single codebase. If you can separate logic and presentation so that the server doesn't do any work that it doesn't need (like rendering, particle simulation, anything that doesn't affect gameplay really) then any engine can be suitable. Also, any optimizations you do for the server will be available in the client as well if you share code between them.

Probably an issue of not putting things in the right step event. IIRC, collision events all occur between the begin step and the normal step events. Things like integrating h/vspeed into x/y occur between the normal step and the end step.

If you have things in the wrong step events, you can end up lagging a frame behind.

I wanted to make a gladiator game but I just realized I would never finish it if I worked on it for years, so I dropped it altogether.
Also, I wouldn't worry about the whole keep the characters under 600 tris thing unless you're making a mobile game or you're gonna have 200 characters on screen.
You can stylistically make them look low poly if that's what you're going for even if you aren't limiting your poly count. The characters will animate better as well with extra polygons if you do it right.

I'm going for a mario 3d land style world map with 8 worlds, and 4 levels and a boss in each. (so 5 levels in each world) basically. Each world could take 30 minutes to an hour depending on how fast you can solve the puzzles. (and not die by enemies and traps).

You beat a level progress to the next, beat the world move on the next etc. I'd prefer a setup where you pick a level and you have to beat the worlds in any order but I'm shit at programming to pull that off.

What's the deal with Godot?

When I put 7500 Sprite nodes, performance tanks the faster I move the mouse. From 20 ms with a still mouse to 120 ms. What's happening here? It's not because of rendering because there are no additional draw calls and this doesn't happen when I render the same sprites from code.

So the engine must be doing something with the input events to the nodes but I'm not sure what since, as far as I'm aware, Sprite nodes don't process input.

One possible problem is that the ball_pos and the rect are not in the same coordinate system. However when I did that tutorial I did not have the problem you report. So check again to make sure you have appropriate coordinate system context

It's been a while since I did that tutorial, so I don't remember the specifics for that case.

But in general, the rect stores 2 positions, top-left and bottom-right corner. The ball_pos is 1 position. However, the ball_pos would be (0,0) in relation to itself, it would be some other value (x, y) in parent, screen or global coordinates and some other value in context of the rect. The easiest would be to make sure both rect and ball_pos are in global coordinates, for example.

A little late for this, but updated the demo with some more bug fixes (sliding and using an ice mine didn't work properly and the game over screen didn't use the appropriate key bind for accepting) and added the rest of the janky mouse support to the boss, feather, and game over menus. It should now also be easier to exit the pause menu by spamming the decline button. I'll have to figure out the other input issues with keyboard later. I made an isometric pixel art robot once, I made a very basic model in Blender and rendered it in an isometric view, then scaled it down and cleaned it up in Aseprite. That made it easier to get the perspective correct.

Yeah I've considered that. Making a 3D model and generating a spritesheet from it would cut a lot of work that I'd have to do in 2D to get all the directions. The downside is that I've never done anything in 3D, I have no idea where to start.

Fellas, I'm working on this rpg maker game and I want to use prerrendered backgrounds. What do? Is there any program to make 3d scenarios and somehow export everything? Not a screenshot because that would just show one part. I need something that scrolls a map and makes a picture out if it.

You won't be a competent 3D artist, game designer and programmer all at the same time. So if you want to 1MA an isometric X-COM style game at least one area will be very sub-par.
Competent 3D artists can shit out generic robots, vehicles and buildings like clockwork, this stuff has no value and you can buy many such assets or just pirate them if your project is non-commercial/hobbyist/learning anyway

It's easy, anon. You just use parallax scripts to lay images over your map, which you just use for collision and event interaction purposes. If you have any questions about that, please feel free to ask. I've spent about 3 years doing pretty much that.

If you're using RPG Maker MV, I recommend grabbing two plugins called "Orange MapShot" and "Kaus Ultimate Overlay". That should make your work much easier.

From blender? Oh, I see. I thought you were wondering how to export your maps to Blender so that you could then 3D art on top of them, but it's actually the other way around.

Hm. Well, I guess you just position your camera and set up your render settings so that it exports to the size you want. e.g. if you want your map to be 22x32 tiles across and your grid size is 32px, then you tell Blender to render out at 704x1024px.

Crazy noisy busy lazy dev reviewer here, today we have:

Elemental Knight: The keyboard controls don't work. The fact they didn't work, and the invisible walls, and the art style, and the idle animation like the player character was constantly winded, all convinced me to not bother to get a controller. It's a shame, I was interested in the concept.

Rune Revolver: It feels good. It looks good so far. I wish I had more to say but there's not much to it yet.

Bokube: It runs like shit even when I turn the quality down to "Low". Setting up the controls how I wanted them was a nightmare. The game froze at one point, but that might have been because I was trying to exit it. When I do exit it doesn't happen properly, the game crashes. Honestly, this isn't really my kind of game or my kind of cuteness, but I wanted to be pleasantly surprised. I know you're pouring your heart and soul into this and it is very cute. It just seems kind of forgettable.

one more batch of reviews later today, hopefully more positive!
