It's not bad actually. Sims 3 isn't glass smooth but it can be pretty playable with the right tweaks.

I found overriding/forcing on some of the graphical settings through my video card control panel seemed to really help. Specifically - Vsync (absolutely necessary anyway, since there's no FPS cap on load screens ... thanks, Maxis), Triple Buffering, and Anti-aliasing.

Then it's just not running a ton of CC or expansion packs, and using the NRaas stuff to keep the game from bloating up too much. A good custom map with routing fixes can help reduce lag too.

I'm actually glad whenever my sims age up, I think it shows progress towards completing the goal of the challenge. And has horrifying as it is to say, I'm always looking for new stones for my graveyard. If I could, I would add a few more days to the teen and young adult ages while making babies life stage as short as possible and a relatively short elder stage as everyone gets old way too quick otherwise. No idea how this all translates into Sims 4, though, I did my legacy on Sims 3 and only got 3 generations in.
I keep the rules light, I never really had the time to paint most of sims in the game and my only real thing I added was having Loser as my Sim's family trait, which is more for flair and pity than anything.

I never understand some of those CC creators. There was one person whose stuff I used often then when I leave and come back a few months later they up and deleted their entire shit. I had to struggle to recall the name of certain CC and Google it + "lana cc tumblr" just to find the reblog post with the Sim File Share links still intact.

It did cause some routing and lag issues for me, but that was years ago and before I really tweaked out the game. I haven't bothered to reinstall and check again because the EP didn't really appeal to me. Reports are otherwise mixed. Showtime is relatively smooth for some, bad for others. It probably boils down to system hardware, the game world you're playing on, and mods installed.
