I played this game (Europa Universalis IV) because I thought the "jokes" and criticisms of the game were false, that no game could possibly be as obtuse, erroneous, or abominable as you made out. I thought the people here were simply spouting hyperbole at a mildly flawed game to make themselves feel as if they were respectable critics, but I was wrong. For those that care, the stupid HoI3 meme mod I'm using has barely any generals that are available to the Kwantung. Unless Mao continues being as useless as he has been so far, which admittedly is a possibility, I'm probably going to beat the Japanese by '39 on the mainland. Annoying.

Anyway I'm making pretty decent progress and once the Japs are kill it'll be even faster, so I might be able to finish the gameplay part of the AAR pretty soon. If I do I'll probably work on writing for it in my free time, and I may be able to do an earlier release than I anticipated. No promises though.

Also, chinanon, I need some good operational names for an invasion of Manchuria designed to cut it off from Korea, and for an invasion of Korea where the goal is to encircle Seoul.

In FO everyone is FOB relative to everyone else because there is not an overarching culture to assimilate to (disregarding NCR & Legion by NV). The Shi are their own nation in what was once San Fran. Yes, NovaPaddy's "Modern Day Mod" is available. Be warned though that he tried to move the start date at some point to 2015 or so and added ISIS along with moving to the E3 map. He managed to make the game lag somehow and Paradox has flip flopped on banning it a few times now because it has ISIS and terrorism. He turned a good mod into absolute shit. There's a 4GB patch available but it doesn't help much, to be honest. If you can find an older version set in 2003 (might be in the thread I linked) it's far better.

Alright, I need some help.
I'm not that new, but nowhere from being good.
I've been reverting my save if I lose in order to get more familiar with the game, so I want to try this until I do a world conquest.

My situation:
I just got out of a war for Hermunduri land.
I have a truce with every German power to end in 312, exception being Hermunduri which comes in 325.
The AE is about 100-300 for the Germans, 18 for Rome.
After they lose the truce, they join a coalition, naturally. The combine force is usually 2-3 times my own.

I can usually knock Rugii out of the coalition by declaring war immediately after truce before they join the coalition (no allies) but it still depletes resources.

How do I not get destroyed by the coalition?

Then there's the mutants at Mariposa just down the road. Then consider that San Fran is on the southern end of the map so we don't even know what is that way. Additionally, the game makes it clear that there are small towns and tribes everywhere that the game doesn't take the time (or have the resources) to flesh out.

The first coalition was stomped because the one that declared was warned by Rome, who came to my aid.
The second was only won as I pulled all troops from the mainland and fought 4 good battles after landing, giving me the ticking warscore to stay under -50 until they accepted white peace.
The third was won because Gepids and Hermunduri were my allies and only half of the other Germans even bothered joining the coalition.

My allies have abandoned me but there must be some other way to do it without losing.

Why do you think Japan attacked the US and started a two front war in the first place?

The Japanese were already seriously struggling in the war against China.
When the US put the oil embargo on Japan the Japanese govt knew that they would not be able to beat China without acquiring a new source of oil.
The only two options were to make peace with China or take the Dutch and British colonies in SEA.
They believed that attacking those colonies would bring the US into the war anyway so they launched a preemptive attack on Pearl Harbor, hoping to take the US Navy out of action for long enough to allow them to finish the war against China.
The attack on Pearl Harbor was a direct result of how desperate the Japanese situation in China was rather than because they were simply arrogant and thought that they could easily win a war on two fronts.

What would you guys want from a theoretical HoI V? What I want would be something like this:

Well not scripted, but make it harder. If they somehow managed to make it 100% historically accurate in terms of equipment and resources (for the sake of argument lets assume such a game would be possible) then it wouldn't mean you couldn't win as China. The war was not a one sided "stomp". It would simply mean that the first years would see you retreating a lot to preserve men while you try to get your shit together on the organizational level before you attempt a counterattack later on.

I honestly believe the Paradox games would be so much better if they got rid of the silly "anything is possible, total freedom" design. Instead give countries "realistic" resources, equipment, tech and political influence and go from there. You would still have the freedom to do what you want and not follow history, but you couldn't do completely whacky shit since your country simply isn't in a position to do it.

I have played the Netherlands in HoI3, stopped the German invasion, annexed Belgium/luxembourg, taken large parts of western Germany and then joined the Comintern to create the Free Socialist state of the low countries. That would not have happened, not even maybe, simply math will show you that even if you ignore all the sociopolitical implications.

On the other hand you could decide to allow Germany free passage to France, sparing yourself defeat annexation and continue an expansion in your colonies. Something which could have happened and in fact was proposed by quite a few people IRL. Different outcome than history, but not pants on head retarded.

Gary Grigsby's WitP/WitW/WitE for the military/logistics aspects. You handle more units in that than you do in HoI3, yet you never feel overwhelmed, you never lose track of anything, all the important info is staring you in a face to be read at a glance, also the way the OoB is handled is divine compared to HoI3 mess of lines'n'arrows.

Political can be scrapped completely for all I care, there is no AI advanced enough to handle anything that would come close to simulating political negotiations and dealmaking that are somewhat real. It always ends up being the same; you spending some sort of "political resource" to make a statvalue go up or down, usually relations between countries.

HoI IV's production, it is honestly the best part about the game, the way it factors in building components.

Also either Commands Ops style fluid battlefield (which would be asking a lot from current systems) or hexes.

I'm going to assume you are playing inside Europe as there is where most new people start and its also where AE can be the most punishing. Attack mudslimes and the rest of europe won't care (basically, religions don't care nearly as much if you are attacking a different religion than them). Play outside Europe and its sorta less of an issue. Take idea groups that reduce AE or increase relations over time. Never take land inside the HRE unless you have a firm grasp on what you are doing.

What you do with your military units is entirely up to you. The political aspect is a case of "the die has been cast", axis are at war with the allies, you don't get to be Nazi America etc.

Cool, thanks! I looked them up on steam and I can only find War in the East, which costs about 80 euros. Can I find a demo or something somewhere? It sounds interesting, but I don't want to commit a lot of money to something I might not even like.

Only countries with over 50 AE can join a coalition. If there is only one country then no worries, you can't have a coalition of one. Just make sure to manage your AE better going forward and you are in the clear.

Also, the Diplomatic advisor "Diplomat" (usually can get one from Nobles estate) gives "Improve Relations +20%" which directly affects the decay rate of AE. May be just enough for you.

However since it has a 80 euro pricetag as you saw, there are simply less players. Every paradox in history has had a sub 5 euro steamsale by now.

Also people shy away from the difficulty/complexity. Set the difficulty in HoI3 to normal, give a newbie a country like Italy along with a 2 page tutorial and watch them blob away across Eurasia.
WitX will destroy you, not only for not understanding certain mechanics (you didn't realize the fact that HQ supply is affected by that major river your division just crossed? Too bad, enjoy 0 fuel and frantically leafing through the manual trying to figure out why your spearhead is "bugged and lost all move points") but also on a strategic/tactical level.

As an aside, one of the great plusses to the Grigsby games, imo anyway, is that fact that they are turnbased. This is perfect for multiplayer, I have played games against people at a leisurely pace of 1 turn ever couple of days in PBEM and they lasted weeks. On the flipside I have never played HoI in multiplayer because they simply require to much "simultaneous online time", I can't do anything in the game unless my opponent is online and vice versa.

How transparant is the game? I don't mind complexity but for example HoI III had without a doubt the worst tutorial I've ever seen in my life and Darkest Hour is an incomprehensible mess not because of complexity but because of bad interfaces.
