You don't get those kind of close debates about optimal strategies for speedrunning because speedrunning has a perfectly defined and easily measurable goal: Reach the ending movie sequence in as short a time as possible. Time spent on a given sequence can be measured so it only takes a few trials with various strategies to determine which one is the fastest. The speedrunning fun for a game like this would probably mostly be about sequence breaking and achieving near-pacifism-level enemy avoidance (no raw strength increases from level-ups means grinding to maintain power will never be necessary)

Just wanted to compare the art. The art for the panel one is kinda bad honestly. I'm not a fan of her chibi one either, always hated the booty thing surrounding Squigly and the proportions make it look weird. Though I firmly believe Squigly is the worst design in Skullgirls so I'm pretty biased.

The panel one is made of a hard material according to a review and the chibi one is made of rubber. Panel one is cheaper.
I'd say go with panel.

so maybe Skullgirls takes place on earth, but far into the future after mankind nearly destroyed itself and had to start over. And by then they had created parasites and then that's how the war came about until almost nothing was left and everyone forgot what happened and had to start over from scratch, even the parasites. And even animals/humans were spliced and mutants and giants were created, so that explains the different creatures like Gigans and furries.

So now humanity built itself back up to the 1920s level of technology and we have the current timeline in skullgirls.

Alex came up with a lot of the lore for both games and they worked with a writer for SG story mode.
It sounds like they're working with that person again along with a couple other writers for Indivisible.
Peter said they already decided the scenarios, but they haven't written the dialogue yet. VO will probably have some impact on the writing too.

New player here. I come from LoL so I'm familiar with MOBA but not fighting game culture.

I always tried to follow a sort of "honor code" when it came to LoL. Don't play "OP" Champs, don't play braindead Champs, don't spam cheap shit etc.

Moving back to Skullgirls, how acceptable is it to spam something that works or to play overpowered or broken characters? If I only know how to open with a "cheap" move is that alright? If spamming hard kick or fireball wins the match is that Alright?

I played against a friend as Peacock and he basically won't face me anymore so I changed over to a "fairer" character and now I main Filia but her hard kick/IAD is getting to seem pretty broken

Part of playing fighting games is learning how to adapt and deal. This is generally accepted. You don't have to worry about this in Skullgirls, because instead of S tier through C tier it's like S tier through A tier. Peacock gets a lot of flak for being annoying but she's by no means broken.

If it were up to me I'd say that having fun is the most important thing. If your friend is frustrated, yeah he's a scrub, but it doesn't hurt to do something else.

I'mma give a legit answer, but as a preface, if you're both just playing casually and don't care about really learning the game, both of you should just do whatever's fun. Don't get caught up in what fighting gamers think you should or shouldn't be doing.

Now, as someone who plays fighting games, that's a pretty dumb mentality for competition. In a casual setting, yeah I can see you getting flak for playing specifically to be annoying, but actually competing against another player, it's fair game. In almost all fighting games, and especially skullgirls, there's generally a counterplay. You throw ten thousand fireballs and your opponent is angry, maybe they should have done something specifically to counter fireballs to punish you. If you keep throwing your opponent, maybe they should be prepared to respond to your throws. Regardless of if the character or strategy is overpowered or broken, (if you're playing skullgirls, it's probably not) it's not on you to give an opponent the match they want to play. If they're tired of spam and they want to beat you, it's on them to figure out the counter.

Lastly, to a new player, if you can only beat your friend by throwing projectiles, spamming instant overheads, etc, then maybe it would be advantageous to learn some of the slightly more difficult tactics. Not that instant overheads and heavy zoning aren't strong tactics, but a one trick pony can beat scrubs who refuse to learn and adapt, but will still get washed by someone with enough experience to counter that specific strategy.

Indivisible is probably more of a platformer than an RPG, but the battle system will provide some nice depth with team synergy and puzzle-type enemies that would be hard to design in a typical action game.

It's definitely coming at a good time. There aren't too many games like it being made right now and most of the recent releases in the genre, like Exist Archive and the last Paper Mario, fell kinda short.

Skullgirls is fucking gorgeous, a go-to example for why Sprites should never be abandoned. Plays fun as shit, has probably a better and more technical training mode than any fighter I've ever played, and can be enjoyed from a casual to hardcore level. Where Marvel VS Capcom 2 is about quantity, Skullgirls is about quality.

So like, why isn't this game more popular? Is it because it's not corporate enough for the FGC?

FGC is a very conservative niche, most titles are past their 5th sequel now or based on very old IPs like DC/Marvel.
Genre itself requires lots of dedication too.

A lot of people judge SG based on AAA standard. They want big rosters, big crowds, big prize pots.
Even if they don't intend to go pro, they just want to be where the cool kids are.

But the game's still been a big success at its scale. Multiple ports and lots of international recognition.
And all while being LabZero's first game, and dealing with their years of roadblocks.

SGC needs to persevere too. Can't sit and wait for the FGC's approval. SG fans also shouldn't wait for SG2.
If you enjoy the game, just keep playing it. Keep supporting it. Keep participating.
That's how the numbers have still managed to grow little by little.

I did like that RTS idea someone mentioned though. The idea is open where it wouldn't need to feature any major characters to be fun. Just seeing hordes of Egrets and Gigans is enough.
So I could see that working better as a spinoff detached from the main storyline, but while still developing the overall lore at the same time.
RTS is also a broader genre with a lot of interpretations. Someone mentioned Dragon Force, also Herzog, etc.. which would look great with LZ style sprites.
