Considering how the Dies Irae Kickstarter campaign slashed the Vita version stretch goal by a whopping 50,000 dollars, it makes the whole campaign seem like an effort to squeeze as much money from fans as possible. Even the Vita version got slashed from a forced buy of the game and soundtrack, both in digital and physical form.

I imagine they thought that 160,000 would be reached within a week and they'd just be able to sell additional stuff afterwards. If you could edit Kickstarter campaign goals, they would've slashed it to 100,000 or 120,000 ages ago.

So I am trying to play ヤンの奥さんは好きですか?, but to render in-game dialogue correctly instead of it being jumbled, it actually requires me to set my entire OS language to japanese before working. Since I am not good enough at jap to be able to function 100% in a jap OS environment and I don't want to keep switching every time I play it, I am looking for workarounds. It’s gonna get funded, but in a way, I wish it wasn’t. The “fans” clearly show they don’t deserve it. Everyone was hyped for it and they did an amazing job with their Prefundia page and what they were saying they’d deliver in terms of content for the game, restoring censorship, upgraded graphics, etc. But then I see people telling others to not support this because the stretch goals or rewards aren’t good enough. ?????? Moege's not necessarily easy to tl, it can take work to make sure the characters come across correctly, but Dies is hard in a different way. It uses very esoteric language and very vibrant imagery in a way that would come across as kind of silly and melodramatic in English, but works as it is because the Japanese has a lot more gravity to it. It takes time to think about how to deliver it in a way an English reader could take seriously. And that's before you get to things like the arias that require you to be able to passably write like Goethe and Wagner, and Tubal Cain spouting shit about 天津罪/国津罪, and other stuff that's basically just Chinese.

Same as anything else really. Unique speech patterns, distinctive writing style, a necessity to preserve certain nuances or connotations, a reliance on wordplay, slang, references or cultural concepts unique to Japan and/or Japanese. A lot of the charm of a moege might come from quick back-and-forths between the characters, and they'll lose a lot of the spontaneity (and hence a lot of the humour) if your workaround is too clumsy. Some games (Seabed, AoKana, SubaHibi) have a very distinct tone and atmosphere that it's important to get across. You might have a plot point like in Clannad that revolves around the subtle differences between honorifics. You might be trying to translate something like Romeo, and then god help you to be honest; just because it's a moege doesn't mean it can't be well-written, and to translate something that's well-written you also need to be a good writer.

And just in general there's a fundamental baseline level of difficulty associated with translation. For all that /vn/ seems to like to pretend you can just substitute English words in and switch them around so they form a grammatically correct sentence, Japanese doesn't map onto english very easily and you'll probably have to end up rewriting whole sentences or paragraphs just so they flow naturally in the way they're supposed to. If you've stuck around here for a bit you'll probably have seen anons attempt to translate bits of Japanese VNs and noticed that it usually comes across as very stilted and unnatural; that's why.

I'm actually constantly amazed anything gets translated at all, to be honest.

Never7 has far less plot emphasis, and while it has a really cool idea behind the whole thing, it's really more of a slice of life/romance thing with drama. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who disliked Ever17.

Remember11 is entirely different from them in basically every way imaginable. It starts off seeming ordinary enough, but then it just keeps escalating constantly while having good characters, music, atmosphere, and mostly everything. The only bad part about it is that there's not more of it.
