Just having 16/16 str/agi is usually enough to kill early game mobs with whatever weapon you can find. Stat progression should focus on the weapon class you want to use.
To make it into the late game you're gunna want to get tinkering 1 so you can mod your equipment. Flaming/freezing/electrified make a big difference in damage on the higher tier weapons.
Cold hands is a great way to get through early and if you level it up it freezes enemies pretty nicely. Sleeping gas is a nice crowd control option.
As far as defenses go DV is great but you will want some AV regardless or the one attack that gets through may delete you.
Make sure your attack pen is high.

Depends. They're useful specifically to low AC characters and against weak attacks. By the time you reach Lair, they're mostly useless; by the time you reach Vaults, they're 100% useless (for instance, a character with reasonably high AC will have more than they'd get from Tree Form).

I'm definitely a big proponent of their use in the early game, though. They just rapidly become pointless with every new floor.

Being unable to move (and unable to even teleport/blink under normal circumstances) is not worth torment immunity. rN+++ is not impossible to get, especially for the ever-common extended game TSO worshippers.

Lig/Tree Form will fuck you over much more often than it'll help you past the midgame. That's the sign of a useless item, IMO.

Just started playing and I've never gotten to D:13 before. My items are absolute shit though and Trog keeps giving me some javelins and tomahawks. Fuck Trog.

Also, I've never left the main dungeon and am afraid to do so. Where should I go first? I have Lair and Orcish Mines available.

but dude, you have an antimagic Executioner's axe before Lair, which is arguably a very nice weapon for the endgame/Zot. Trog believes in you.

Speaking of which, what's your Axes skill at? Because while an Exe Axe is sexy as fuck, it might fuck you over if your skill isn't at least like 10, if not 15. For the time being, you might be better off with an Axe less powerful than your Exe.

In general, you'll want to do Lair before Orc, unless you zero weapons for killing Hydras, which luckily isn't the case with you. Your dire flail will work well (be sure to switch to it at the first sight of a Hydra), so Lair should be your goal. Keep in mind that you might get poisoned in this area -- however, you'll only get basic amounts of poison in Lair and not horribly bad poisoning that'll put your whole health bar in the yellow (Uniques like Sonja are an exception). For most people and in most cases, Lair is fine without poison resistance.

Also, use your identify scroll and ID those glowing grey potions (and any other potions that you haven't ID'd). For now, drop your noise scroll as well: you can just yell with "tt" if you need to create noise (which does have tactical usage from time to time).

My axe skill is like 17. I have gotten multiple enchant weapon scrolls after the post and used them on the axe. I also ID'd the potions and went to the Lair, in which, I'm doing fine.

Good to know the Hydra thing, I've splatted to Hydras on my earlier "best" runs. Now I know to save the Flail for Hydras.

This one will be by far my best run ever and I'm slowly starting to enjoy the game. I hope I'll be able to get to this point consistently after as well.

VS bite isn't based on main-attack-damage either anon, it's a flat amount that increases with the level of the mutation (which increases as VS level).

Offhand punch is related to your total damage output because both are based mostly on UC skill.

Qud is made by people who pulled a Biskup and decided to "update" weekly with single bugfixes a dead game, after they saw sproggywood wasn't getting them anywhere.
The game's still unfinished, they literally (metaphysically) slapped a blue filter on a game that hasn't had an ending in seven years, was left in development hell until they found out they could actually get money out of gullible fucks that did not know about the game before and the codebase is still wonky..

250 Mb savegame files.
For a game that's 50 Mb in size.

But it's not a bad game. I like Qud. In fact, I was really happy when I heard they were rebooting it, since I hated not having nothing to do after bethesda.

But the barathrum tower is still fucked after 7 years.

Fuck shiny new tiles and music to grab the easy money, I want to play Qud, not sproggyQud.

Don't mean to shill or anything but every single time I've had a problem with the game or a question about the game I've gone to Discord or Reddit (lel, ikr XD) and the dev has answered to me within hours. He seems to actually care about the game so I'd happily pay more than ten bucks. Hell, I even bought Sproggiwood for mobile.

Like everyone else I appreciate open-source projects but if a hard working guy wants to get paid for his work that's totally fine as well.

Old Qud used the same font Incursion and dorf fort use. This is just the pre-packaged font you get from the Tome Engine.
Have they seriously ripped off the only free roguelike engine and refurbished it for Qud.

They've added the fungal forest and diseases as well as add Sultan's, historical areas and engraved or painted items.

There is actual random shit do entertain, find new areas by reading and engraving a boot, kill everyone there and claim an artifact or rare loot.

They've also added more items as well as hired new coders to actually get the game moving.

I was skeptical at first but playing the game after 6 month hiatus and quite a bit has changed.

All the spinoffs that use the ToME engine have that exact font, because it's built in by default. Haven't seen it used anywhere else when playing ascii games, and I've played most of the 7dRLs and new stuff that comes out on roguebasin.
Once you see it, it remains impressed in your retina and you tend to make the connection.

Each costs a small amount of mana per turn (less than your mana regeneration rate) based on their level. You can see what % of your mana regeneration this is using on the ~p screen.

If you're a manaless class the cap is at 100% mana usage and you will be forced to dismiss some things if you reach that point.

If you are a class _with_ mana, you can summon as many pets as you want for ever-increasing mana-per-turn costs, and aren't forced to dismiss anything until you hit 0MP.

Currently I am playing a ring and using armies of greater undead summoning more greater undead to kill uniques. Yeah the giant pile of archliches is costing me 1000% of my mana regen but things still die before my mana actually hits 0.

Second win ever, second in 5 days.

I should really stop doing Zot5 and ascension runs so late at night, but whatever.

I'm kinda happy but kinda pissed. Got lucky enough to find a Lajatang of Order and potentially could have gone for more runes....but I chickened out after getting my ass kicked in the Abyss. At least I'm now well-aware that all non-Lair/Vaults runes should probably be done after clearing most of Zot.

Also, it was my first time clearing out the Elfen Halls, though, so that was cool! (Although, I was chickened out by the Hall of Blades and didn't explore it.) Definitely a nice place to visit if you're bulking up and/or in need of equipment for Vaults:5.

This makes two TSO wins, too. I think I might try the other "good" gods and see if there's anything to them (Zin's near immunity to mutations seems nice). Or I might try Trog again, but honestly, I don't know how to use Berserk without getting fucked by the end cooldown.

All (?) of the good gods dislike the eating of undead corpses; that's okay since undead rarely actually give you anything (they can take you to Slash/Pierce .9, though, which is quite rare). It's the dragons and dragon-likes that give you huge resists.

Also, don't forget to max out Hunting! With Hunting 100, you can easily get to .5-.6 on most of your resists before you even leave the starting island; the high-level monsters on the second floor of the wintersea keep after very helpful there.

There is a battery threshhold that varies by engine. It should tell you how many points of charge it needs in the right pane when it fails to start if that's why it isn't starting. You can get nearly spent batteries from multiple vehicles to add up to enough charge.
There's no threshhold for fuel AFAIK, but if your fuel is low enough that you wondered if that might be a problem then you need to get more fuel. Fuel efficiency is completely fucked right now, even with the huge vehicles mod, to the point that gas and diesel engines aren't even remotely viable. Depending on how fast you go and how much weight you're carrying you might not even be able to drive across a moderately sized city on a full tank.

The jellies are useless, even as a distraction, the passive slime-friend thing is good but loses value past Depths, Slimify is good, remove-bad-mutations is good, but all he seems to do for HAVING mutations is flip between Xom-lite and Zin-lite; "hey, I think you'd be a more successful predator if you had a few extra eyeballs." [a few turns pass] "Alright, time for another gif- whoa! why do you have a bunch of extra eyeballs? Removed!"

I think I'm just going to try Zin; better to never have mutations in exchange for an actual god than to have a few mutations that never stick around long enough to matter in the place of my god slot.

So I had a pet housecat and a pet large cat.
I polymorphed the housecat into a baby grey dragon, which was dank. The large cat poly'd into a quivering blob, which died when I tried to polymorph it again.
Now my pet dragon is gone, too. I didn't leave Minetown, I didn't find any scales or corpses or anything, it just up and disappeared. What the fuck happened? IIRC, if your pet dies off screen you get a message "You feel sad for a moment then it passes". I think there's a message for every situation pet could have died, did you get any interesting messages like that? Also magical whistle is probably the most useful item in the game, try to get one and always keep it with you if you have pets, it would have helped you

It was definitely out of view around the time it disappeared, and I might not have been wearing my towel. The way I see it, either it stepped into a level teleporter while I wasn't wearing the towel (so I didn't see it, so my character doesn't know if it disappeared), or I missed its death / teleport message. In any case, I can't find it (or any other dragons) anywhere in the mines and applying the magic whistle on each level resulted in nothing.

Not really an issue desu, there are loads of ways to get new pets. In my games sometimes I let a werewolf bite me to summon shitload of wolves(they stay as your pets when you turn back human) and then #pray out of lycantrophy. You most likely stood on a young ivory. Because of lmao programming quality, monsters aggro to position of said ivory rather than the critter itself, so friendly mons will kill you unless you immediately move off it or occupy them with something else.

I wish I could phrase it more nicely, but if you're able to get 2-3 runes, then you just need to focus and stop getting roped into doing stupid shit. If need be, change your main god (e.g. use Okawaru or TSO instead of Trog). TSO is personally my favorite for a melee player, and if you're getting far, you'd do well with a Monk background (to get the extra 2 piety stars off the ground). TSO also makes the ascension run a breeze, due to having Holy Wrath weapons and Cleansing Flame to kill the various demons and Pan Lords. Protection from Harm that the good gods give is also very nice.

Other protips:

Remember the power of "tt" (that is, shouting), especially in dangerous-yet-funnelly places like Elf:3 or Zot:5. Get near the entrance to the place you expect is filled with monsters, shout, move back to your kill hole, kill anyone who approaches, rinse and repeat.

Pay attention to what elemental damage your enemies have access to -- fire deals a shitton of damage, and it particularly hurts with no fire resistance. The turn you see yourself in a dangerous position, you should take a minute or so and see what your options are instead of fighting with no/minimal buffs or just running to the nearest staircase.

Once you're in Zot and you don't plan on going anywhere else, use your magic mapping scrolls on as many of the 5 floors as you need. I usually don't autoexplore in Zot at all -- instead, I carefully clear out each floor, figuring out which places are most likely to have enemies, where are the best places to fight, etc. etc.

Curse toes get a special mention for being annoying as shit in Zot (the one persistent enemy here with access to Torment; thankfully, they don't appear in Zot:5), but there are ways to deal with them: Tree Form (via potions of lignfication) makes you immune to torment, giving you the time to take them out. Otherwise, make them your number one priority.

bullshit, I've had curse toes on Zot:5 multiple times, and autoexplore in Zot is fine really. It's not as dangerous as Tomb or something.

Who the fuck fights the fiends and pan lords on the orb run? I would only ever fight them on chei characters since they can't run away or haste, and some pan lords,like the ones with glaciate, are so dangerous that it's never,ever worth engaging them since running away is far more effective 99% of the time.

This honestly seems like pretty crap advice, how many times have you even won in DCSS that you think this is even remotely good advice to a new player?

A tabbing mindset is the main reason people die, which is why using a melee god who isn't so tab-friendly is smart. Plus, Divine Shield and a relatively cheap god-summon with Angels and Daevas is still massively powerful.

And of course you shouldn't *try* to fight during the Orb run, but sometimes you're left without a choice (i.e. you're literally being blocked in).

Most importantly, the OP gets 2-3 runes. He might be a win-virgin, but he's not new enough to specifically do the wrong thing.

I play better when tired and sleepy. I have like, 20 or 30 of my 15 rune guys that were done at 11-5 am. Being stupid has nothing to do with fatigue, it's not like you're playing a physically dependent non-turn based videogame in the first place. It's not a long game either when you're done with Vaults:5; in fact extended is the shortest part of the game that's why many people want to cut its content since it'll make no difference.

Hey guys, I'm playing DCSS as a DEFE.

I'm on Lair 2, and an Ice Caves, Volcano, and Labyrinth all spawned on this floor.

Which should I prioritize? I have two pips of rF and Mystic Blast and Force Lance, so the Volcano should be very doable. I also imagine that the Labyrinth would be no problem.

Likewise, the Ice Caves are probably too much of a risk for me.

Also, I haven't played since 0.14 or some shit; are there any major changes I should be aware of?

I want to do a 15-rune run. The pertinent question now is: how much armor will I want? How much strength will I want to use this armor practically? I feel like aiming for 9 str and Fire/Ice/Pearl Dragon Armor, but maybe those point are better spent on Int.

You could cut entire bestiaries in half because so many monsters fulfill the same role with incredibly minor variations that add nothing to the game.

Steam has been the slow death of roguelikes. It seems like almost all the roguelikes being developed now are closed-source. Probably the result of the developers identifying more with "indie dev" culture than the traditional roguelike or Unix culture. Kinda sad, really.

IIRC turtles (unsurprisingly) have quite a lot of armor and can be difficult for a low-level player to kill.

But really it depends on your character.
If you have freezing hands or eye lasers or something you can probably use that to kill them, although just bumping into them with your wooden cudgel or iron dagger or whatever probably won't do too much

People have said that Armor is the easiest/most straightforward realm. Just pick it with a red/white dragon (who are best at melee in exchange for getting a resisted-by-everything breath element) and tab shit. Presumably Attack is similar.

Gold dragon gives you sound breath which is useful for stunning enemies, and Crystal gets shards which is one of the least-resisted element types. Plus crystal dragons eventually get reflection.

Pseudo/Nether are shitty at both melee and breath but eventually evolve into Ethereal Dragon/Death Drake, getting the ability to walk through walls ghost-style.

I've heard that Crusade is a fun realm. Only available to gold or law dragons.

lore: just ID/detection spells
craft: you get infinite free reforging at 35 but nothing worthwhile before that so your earlygame will be shit

I have .13, .15 and a trunk version from like a week ago installed, I jump from one version to other from time to time. But so far, to my experience the latest version is simpler so I'm spending most of the time there to learn the game. Don't you get your ammo back from corpses? Also when playing I came across throwing items of brand "returning" or something like that, can't you get them on ammos? I think hunters can start with javelins too

Also do you have a link to a trunk of .13? When searching through I came across species "Lava Orcs", they looked interesting and were appearently playable in one of trunks of .13 but I can't find any link to them

Ranged is shit. You'll find yourself quickly running out of arrows before reaching Ecumenical Temple (where you'd find Oka/Trog, who'd gift you more arrows, albeit at high piety levels), let alone the places where you'd really need it.

CeHu isn't impossible, but it's such a tedious pain in the ass. Bows and ranged fighting in general are really only meant to complement a fighter/stabber/caster build, not be a full thing on their own.

I suppose it'd work if you bit the bullet and went for Slings and then promptly switched to Bows when you begin seeing enemy Centaurs. But the ranged playstyle is so annoying that I guarantee you'd have more fun doing something else.

Basically, you need to play .13 if you want to have a throwing build - it allows you to throw things like hand axes, spears, and daggers, and get a returning brand on them, as well as having darts, which were abundant, could be branded, and were ultimately phased out for being bloat. There's 2 kinds of ammo: mulchable, which has a chance to disintegrate on use, which includes javelins, darts, stones, arrows, bolts, and the like, and non-mulchable ammo, which will never disintegrate - the aforementioned hand axes, spears, and daggers. So if you want to start hurling daggers of Chaos and be lethal with them instead of the bullshit "you clumsily toss the dagger for 0 damage", .13 is for you. If you find a dagger/hand axe/spear of returning, you're set; as you get your throwing higher, it will nearly always return, just be careful not to throw it at shit over deep water on the off chance you lose it forever.

Probably not. Statueform makes all actions take 50% longer, so you only get off 2 spells in three turns as opposed to 3.

It's also good for unarmed mainly because in addition to all those resists and extra AC, it increases their base damage by a huge amount, and then adds an extra 50% on top of that; spellcasters and non-UC only gets the extra 50%, which just about compensates for the slower speed.

100% archer will run out of arrows soon, but that's not a problem, because you can kill a lot of things with something like a dagger of venom or short sword of electrocution or even a normal spear with 0 in relevant skill. Once you start meeting centaurs, you'll have enough ammo to not run out ever provided you won't waste it on harmless popcorn. If you go with Oka/Trog, once they start gifting you ammo, you can throw away your melee weapon entirely.

humans are pretty quick to level, but yeah Camelot is just nasty for how shallow it is. What version are you on? 5.0.3 splits Camelot into Stronghold for new characters and a new Camelot to the south.

One nice thing about races that level quickly, besides the obvious, is that once you have excess exp later on (like past level 50) you can try for a polymorph (usually from activating the Stone of Chaos) to change to a better lategame race.
