sleepy Iji edition

>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy,Cookie Clicker, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indies, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

Recently? Probably Balrum. It's a comfy turn-based isometric RPG with additional farming/building/survival elements.

Never heard anybody talk about it. ;_; Even their forums are pretty dead, although the game appears to be doing okay (~12k copies sold according to Steamspy) and it's not a bad game at all.

Looking at GOG reviews of it, apparently it was pretty bad at release but I had no qualms with the version I played last month.

Trying something in Expedition: Conquistador. When you start off in the mainland, there is a village very close to where you start off at where you can get married to a native girl. Further inland, you can find another native girl and cheat on your wife with her, which leads to a violent confrontation between the two later on.

I was curious to see if the fight still happens if you hook up with the 2nd native girl and THEN go marry the first girl. In a normal playthough, you'd meet the first girl first and the 2nd girl second.

It's too bad you can't hook up with the delicious brown loli princess though.

Can anyone recommend a game similar to OFF or LISA?

(I like the game to at least have bizarre enemies or have interesting music)
>>
>>165014157
Machinarium is the worst game by that studio
Way too many puzzles are just way too disconnected by being brainage games and the story you uncover is laughable bad with it showcasing bullies that bully you all your life just because
Also the robots look fucking retarded.
The environments are still neat as per usual and the greenhouse plus the scene after are very well done.

That is just what sony roaches do and make other people do without knowing it. They intentionally always link the playstation trailers despite the real publisher trailers being available. Just leaving out a little information can be so market influencing.
>>
>>165034583

If you don't get the the remade steam version you should at least look ito the freeware version. It's a pretty good game honestly. it's only like an hour or two long but if you close it without saving you'll just fuck yourself from ever playing it again.. The steam version doesn't do this though since you do pay money or it though so there/s that.

>>165097232
Oh it's not reallyTHAT good of a game hoenstly. It's a game that as a lot of potential but has a lot of short comings and problems. It's a shmup where ironically it's better to use your melee weapons than to shoot. The game has a duel weapon system sorta like einhander I guess where one's on top and one's on the bottom. With it you can attack a melee and gun or two of one or the other. The game encourages using a gun and melee but the melees do more damage overall sine they can hit multiple targets and enemies like to group together. A setup I like is using the extending spear melee that shoots out a bit to stab the enemy and the melee that will irlcle you and hit anything near you. It gives you good range with the spear and cover defense with the other melee. Along with this, melee is encouraged since some enemies use shields that redirect your bullets. Unfortunately bullets don't pierce and the BEST guns are NOT worth how expensive they are from what I can tell so it's best to just stick to melee. Along with this the game has 3 control formats. You can play the game with the keyboard, mouse, or controller. Oddly I find the mouse to be much better since it both lets you make really subtle movements and also super quick ones at however fast your mouse is. It REALLY helps melee since it lets you just run in and out to hit and then get away from the enemy before they can really react. It's also easier to dodge with the mouse too I think. Honestly the only problem is that I'd sometimes crash into enemies and instantly die before I got the hang of it. The game also has a nice variety of game maps and enemies that hve neat ideas in their designs. One problem iwth the enemies however is that with most moving shooter enemies, they have to point at you to shoot you and if you hit them hard with a melee, posssible just the spear ne but I don't remember, you can knock their aim of and further show why melee is so good. It just makes it harder for them to aim cont
>>
>>165099546
>>165097232
CONT. Also there are a lot of weapons attribute faces and even shields too if you'd like to experiment with a loadout but I still think melee over all is OP. The game's defining trait is its amazing art style. The style is done completely in ball point aside from the background lighting, gradience, and sillohuettes of stuff for the most part. YOu can see the notebook lines and everything, the game just bleeds the look of doodles found in like a math notebook. The music is also a very nice treat as well. https://soundcloud.com/docprop/sets/ballpoint-universe-original The music, it's great but has this almost mystic kinda serious vibe to it? I don't really know hoenstly. It's definately a soundtrack I'd buy though but I suck at judging music so I dunno. The game has a major problem though and that's the entire god damn campaign. NONE of the characters are interesting, the environments are actually sometimes easy to get lost in even though it's actually really REALLY linear. The NPCs have good designs but they appear a lot and lose value because of it The story's really really interesting in concept with drawing fighting more logical written things like angled shaped and geometric objects drawn and how the game revolves around a certain monolith destroying everything but is super poorly executed and it overall just doesn't leave an impact. The main villain has a very cool design but he's not really built up good and the whole story almost jsut feels like a sequence of events that are just "there". The game also hasa weirdly straight serious story but it wouldn't be so bad if ANY character actually had like any growth or developement. Heck it's a bit hard to really call any of them characters honestly. They also just kind of "there" too in a way. The characters feel like they all exist to give the player something to talk to or be props to the story, almost like they're more a part of the level design than the subject of the story cont.
>>
>>165099546
>>165101817
>>165097232
Ok sorry this is so long but this is the last one.

The game's main problem however is that it's also a platformer in its overworld. And by god the platforming SUCKS. The character has this weirdly annoying floppy way of moving that just feels super weird and awkward. Its animations are super speradic and just unconfortable to control. Its movement speeds when jumping and walking just feel kinda jerky and awkward honestly. ALong with this, this is all with just the keyboard controls. Now imagine these sorta bad feeling character being controlled by your fucking mouse. Here's the thing about the mouse controlls to. Your character doesn't move at different gradual speeds depending on how far away on one side or another your mouse either, they have instead several preset speeds that change depending on how far it is. Because of this if you're jumping from one plat form to annother you'll most likely go into the wrong speed and either jump too far or not enough or even accidentally walk off the platform by switching into the wrong speed or by accidentally walking off a ledge you were just wanting to stand on. it's probably one of the worse control schemes I've ever seen and the reason this is annoying is because when you change the chontrol scheme, it changes it for the shmup stages as well. Because of this you'll be either dealing with switching between them everytime you enter and exit a shmup stage or if you forget to change them or get sick of doing it you'll be dealing with not good shmup controls that are fast and very impersice when compared to the more speed and percise controlable mouse ones or REALLY shitty platformer controls vs bad ones. Also I found a few glitches like an unimportant NPC falling out of world and parts in the final area where the background pops infront of the actual platform you walk on when you're in certain spots.

TLDR: huge potential bad execution but with still decent parts like the shmup levels.

That was a tough fight, but beating it felt the like the accomplishment of beating a Souls boss I'd been having trouble on. That AoE stun she does is insane.

Too bad the quest reward was like only 1000cp. Cheap-ass Crucible Knights.
>>
>>165179138

I enjoyed Arkantos a lot, but that might be because I'm playing on hell mode, so I have Rando around to help take hits/avoid getting stunlocked.

I stopped playing a little while ago, because I got a bug. I finished killing all the warlords, killed the ghouls, met the professor guy, but I was exploring around to see if anything changed (like how Tooley kills himself after you defeat all the vanilla warlords) I wound up stuck in a house. No matter what I did, I couldn't activate the door to make it leave. So I just had to close the game. I hadn't saved in quite a while (I'd have to fight the big ghoul, then all the regular ghouls, and THEN the final boss.)

What am I supposed to do after fighting the final boss to activate the various ending? Just go back to Olathe and defeat Yado normally?

Somehow I think games just don't have proper hardmodes anymore.
>>

I'm kind of surprised I never looked into that menu, I guess I overlooked a tooltip about it. I thought there was going to maybe be some sort of training involved, like in Dragon Age: Origins, where you need to train herbalism to make potions, or trap-making for traps, etc.

It made the fight just that little bit easier to deal with. In hindsight, it might have been better to have split the scrolls between my Kana and Aloth, instead of just giving all 4 to Kana, because then I could have cast the scrolls faster. I have the save for my setup there, so maybe I'll test it out some time and see what I could have done better.
>>
>>165184656
What's your party like?
>>
>>165190113
Main Character is an Orlan Paladin, and my party consisted of Eder, Aloth, Kana, Sagani, and Durance.

Eder is the group's tank, my paladin is an off-tank with a bit of healing potential for when it's needed, Aloth is probably built awfully and needs a reroll to get rid of some useless spells and replace them with decent stuff, Kana has his base abilities plus the 'one dozen stood against a god' chant, Sagani I'm focusing on ranged DPS, and took the trait that boosts accuracy against a target her fox is also attacking.

I've not really gone for min/maxing of stats, because I think it's kinda boring, personally.

I don't think I'm too far in yet, I've mostly done side stuff, only recently got to Defiance Bay. I'm trying to decide what faction to side with between the Dozen and Crucible Knights, because I can only imagine working for one will end up distancing yourself from the other, what with all the tension between the two groups. I'm sort of leaning Crucible Knights, the Dozen seem like a bunch of rabble.

I'm playing it now and it's definitely intentional.

Some RPGs are RPGs and they're about persistence and resourcefulness. This is because somewhere in the game is a source of some infinite resource that you can utilize with enough patience.

This game has nothing like that. It has fixed and limited resources, and because of that it becomes a puzzle game.

Very good stuff

>DO NOT QUIT YOUR DAY JOB.
>Design something that’s simple, you can still make a big game, but make sure the design is concise.
>If you ever get this feeling: “Meh, it’s good enough, let’s just release and be done with this hell”. Wait. You will regret it, even if you’re on the brink of homelessness and need money, suffer through it and wait. It will be worth it.
>You probably won’t make much money. Don’t risk your finances for years by going into debt and putting all your chips in.
>DO NOT RELEASE IN NOVEMBER.
>Publishers aren’t always going to magically get people talking about your game. If that’s the reason you have for getting one, don’t.
>Porting from PC to console is not the same as porting from PC to Mac or mobile in Unity. It’s a lot of work.
>Game expos and watching other people play your game is key to making your game better, as well as making you a better designer.
>DO NOT DO GIVEAWAYS. You’ll get emails all the time from people saying they’ll market your game by giving it away. Even if you’ve only sold a few hundred copies, it’s not worth it. It won’t benefit anyone but the person doing the giveaway.
>If you do a kickstarter video, make sure it has you, the developers, in the video.
>DO NOT GIVE KEYS TO YOUTUBERS WITH LOADS OF SUBSCRIBERS WHO REQUEST IT. If you get a request from a you tuber who has a million subscribers, that should raise a red flag. Popular youtubers do not request keys. If you give them a key, your game will be all over torrent and pirate sites within a week.

They were terribly naive idealists with no real-world business experience and they just can't admit their own mistakes.

Look at the comments, it gets really desperate.
The publisher's representative showed up to correct their lies. One the devs responds with a long-ass rant in an attempt to still push responsibility away, despite admitting they were at fault.

The publisher gave them a very good contract; they even had the freedom to choose their own schedule and they still failed every milestone delivery.

Man, if I had to work with blue-eyed idealists like that, I'd make sure my contracts have excellent non-disclosure and termination clauses so I could get rid of trouble.

There's literally only one point in the game I disliked towards the middle where you had to grind little mini-games/a Boss Fight/idle for Credit. Thankfully, that was reduced by a factor of 10.
>Instead of having to go to 1 million from 900,000, you only have to go to 100,000 from 90,000
It's still sizable, but far less so.
I was also the first guy to get a full-clear in Boss Rush.

What we know for sure is that they were probably outsider mercenaries hired by JKK.

Heavy spoiler here, read at your own risk:
Oculus is a possibility as they were the ones who stole the Cube in the first place, and Six was about to go nuclear on them for losing it. But Azif never mentions the warehouse raid, so there's a possibility that the mercenaries really were a third party.

>>
>>165288717
Well shit, I just tried it.

If I sneak up on them and initiate combat before their suspicion fills up, I can still switch armor without any AP cost.

But here's the really funny thing. I switch to some non-stealth gear, and they spot me instantly. But if I then switch back to the stealth equipment, they will not only go back to not seeing me, but their suspicion will also reset.

This is both kinda retarded and insanely abusable at the same time.
>>
>>165289575
Hmm, my bad. Upon trying with the latest version the suspicion doesn't actually reset. You can still change your mind and switch back to the stealth gear, but if you take even a single step while being seen combat begins.

Shit guys, I'm on a roll.

Codex Concern #2: Deep Worms and other respawns

Leo mentioned he was searching through the research area for something that can help with the Burrower problem, but never found it. Unique Experimental Biocorp Device, while active repels insects (Burrowers, Psi Beetles, Deep Worms, Coil Spiders, Crawlers). Hidden inside one of the destructible wall buildings, no skill check. Equip in Utility slot, constantly drains power while active, rechargeable.

Am I good, or what?

>>165299550
Can? No idea. That was not her purpose, and she won't fuck with your changes even if you leave her alone, but on the other hand you can't disable IRIS from there either. I don't think it's impossible or even unlikely that she has access to the power control. Or that it would be impossible to give her access to it. The only thing she'd need to do is send a bot up there, and voilà, she can do the same thing you do when you go to the power control yourself.
>>
>>165301030
I forgot about Princess Remedy during the sale.
>>
>>165301732
>I don't think it's impossible or even unlikely that she has access to the power control.

>>
>>165302159
You mean when you hack it? She does, it just takes her some time. And the bot respawns continue until you go and deal with IRIS.

But again, it's not like the control did some biometric scan to determine who was accessing it. Send up a bot, and problem solved.
>>
>>165302430
No, when you go to the power console. The first thing you do is reallocate power away from Arke defenses. She can't turn them back on.

So you enter DC, promptly blow yourself up, and proceed to the ending slides. Which plays out mostly how it normally would, except you are dead.

Maybe styg needs to add a new inherent ability for all characters:

Suicide
Perform a special attack with any weapon that bypasses all resistances and shields, applies a bleeding wound that deals extra 800% damage over 3 turns and stuns the target for the same duration. This attack always critically hits. Only works on yourself.

But how can you see the ending when you're dead?

There are about two main questlines, pro-Aztec and pro-rebel, and at the end, you have the opportunity to backstab whoever you sided with so you can conquer the land for yourself. If you don't backstab, you basically secure an alliance with whoever is in power and Spain. .I usually support the rebels, but I wanted to explore the Aztec questline before loading up an old save and doing the rebel-questline. Hypothesis: There is a strong connection between him and the tchortist rejects. The rejects are failed attempts at replicating old Biocorp transhumanism projects, maybe even the same Project Ark that Azif asks you to investigate. You can find the same black eyes in Institute secret labs and Hollow Earth, so there's a definite link between HE research and the rejects. Azif could be one of the remaining successful transhumans created through Slavkovic's work 2 centuries ago.

Is there any solid evidence confirming or debunking the above?

Maybe, though I think it is a sign of a specific genetic modification, not general. The faceless could bear the same mark, or maybe not. Ultimately we do not know. However, the DC INM chatlogs don't mention Otis having creepy eyes or anything of the sorts. But there is very little informal chatter about it in the first place. I have a gut feeling Otis and the faceless are different from Azif and the rejects.

I don't think true sight is related at all. To me it seems to simply be a game mechanic signifying this entity's visual perception can't be fooled with mind tricks.

Nice job, although the Black Cloth is kind of wasted on it. The 35% Armor Penalty hurts your stealth and movement much more than the bonus can compensate for. And you are wearing a Balaclava and Cave Hopper boots, so I'm guessing you want to stealth and move faster.
>>

>>
>>165339060
I don't think so. Obviously he still wouldn't get the Dodge/Evasion bonus from Nimble, which is a bit of a waste.

But then his Armor Penalty would be only 21%. Let's say the AGI bonus from the Hopper boots gives him +3 MP, and that he has 33MPs in total. With a 21% penalty, he'll lose 7 MPs, more than the bonus he gets from the boots.

For stealth, let's say he has 100. With that penalty, he just lost 21.

So yeah.

Copypastin' CSG update, because this one is interesting. Greentexting this would be a bitch, so I won't.

Key Concepts:

1. Tagged Skills

The tagged skills will increase at a faster rate (let's say x1.25). INT will no longer give overall XP bonuses but define the number of tagged skills instead (up to 4 tagged skills at INT10). Thus a smart person will be able to excel in a larger number of disciplines.

2. Party-Based Mechanics used in DR

Charisma will determine the number and quality of your party members. The party size will range from 2 to 4. Experience points from quests will be split between the human party members (a droid will have its own leveling up mechanics and won't cost you any XP), thus a smaller party will be able to gain levels faster.

3. Feats & Character Levels

Your characters will gain levels using experience points from quests. When you level up, you’ll select feats, unlocking or improving your abilities. The feats will be an important aspect of character development (i.e. they won’t give you minor bonuses but help you develop your characters along specific paths: lone wolf vs squad leader, offense vs defense, gunslinger vs sprayer or gadgeteer, melee vs ranged, which will go beyond which skill to develop, etc) and make as much of a difference as the skills levels.

The skills will determine your chance of success with certain tasks and the feats will define what you can do and how you can use these skills to maximum advantage. Basically, the feats will define your character much more than your skills.

4. Skills & Learn by Using

You will not gain XP for killing, talking, sneaking, picking locks, using computers, fixing mechanical things and such. You will not increase your skills manually. Instead your skills will be increased automatically based on their use.

The main problem with a party-based, skill-based setup is that even with a 3-man party you can easily cover all skills you want to have. You’ll have a fighter/talker, fighter/thief, fighter/fixer, which is something we’d like to avoid. The ‘increase by use’ system solves this problem in the most natural and logical way possible. Your abilities reflect what you do, not how (usually arbitrary) you distribute your skill points.
It reinforces our party-based goals. If you let one of the party members do all the repair work while you concentrate on other areas, losing this party member would hit you hard and you’d have to make sure (via choices made during quests) that he/she would stay with you no matter what.
It rewards consistent gameplay. Let’s say you need to deal with a gang that stands between you and that door over there. If you kill them, everyone’s combat skills will improve a bit. If you talk your way through, only your dialogue skills will go up.

Instead of counting how many times you did something, we’ll assign a certain value (let’s call it learning points) to each activity (attacking, killing, fixing, sneaking, convincing, lying, etc). So killing a tough enemy or repairing a reactor will net you more points than killing a weakling or fixing a toaster. Basically, it will work the same way as XP but go directly toward raising the skill that did all the work.

1-10 ranks with hidden grandmaster ranks going above 10. So essentially a 1-20 system. Basically, we don’t want someone to max a skill and then have the xp go to waste, so we will allow raising the skill above 10 in the unlikely event of someone going over 10 via extreme specialization.
>>
>>165343003
6. Stats:

STR – carry weight, melee damage bonus, min requirements for heavy (two-handed) weapons like plasma canons.
DEX – determines AP (Dex + 2) and combat sequence; same as in DR
CON – determines HP (CON x 5)+10, number of implants, and resistance to poison, knockdowns, criticals and other harmful effects while in combat. The goal is to make toughness more than just hit points as +5 hit points don’t really make much difference. So the focus should be on resisting harmful effects. Implants: 1 at CON4, 2 at CON5, 3 at CON6, 4 at CON7, 5 at CON8, 6 at CON9, 7 at CON10
PER – THC modifier for all weapons, reduces the effect of flashbang and smoke grenades.
INT – determines the number of tagged skills: 1 at INT4, 2 at INT6, 3 at INT8 , 4 at INT10. Reduces Brainwave Disruptor effects.
CHA – determines the party size, 1 follower at CHA5, 2 at CHA7, 3 at CHA9; max party size is 4

7. Implants

In most cases the implants won't give you direct bonuses (cellular regeneration and subdermal armor are the only combat implants) but will assist with "gated content", either allowing to bypass stat checks or unlocking extra content in the first place (like interfacing with the ship's systems via a bridge officer's datajack). Basically, the implants are closer to what we did in AoD than to Shadowrun, in case anyone's wondering.

8. Reputation

General reputation will be checked in dialogues, but it will also give the players a better idea of what they missed via low ranks. Personal beliefs will be shaped by your decisions and checked in dialogues. We’ll start the game with 10 "old-school" questions which will both introduce the setting and define your character a little bit (the starting values).

Read the rest of the reputation example here:

The image format is losslessly compressed though. Not to mention lossy image compression doesn't cause that kind of artifacting. The same pattern is clearly visible in the inventory background texture as well.

It's a puzzle game. You can't grind so you have to figure out the best way to fight and conserve resources.

Think of the area you're in as sort of a cage with a series of locked doors in the form of checkpoint boss battles. You need to find a way to beat that boss, which you do by gathering all the information about the resources available to you in the area you're in and assessing them critically. The most important resource is obviously experience points, so what you're supposed to do is get as strong as possible, while saving as many supplies as is possible, then beat the boss in as cost effective a fashion as possible to save your consumables for the next hard fight which is inevitably waiting for you in the next area.

The one thing you get an endless amount of is time.

Unless you're dying irl.

They got lot of bad feedback on AoD's "savescum each dialog" gameplay. This new system will definitely fix that problem and I trust they can implement a learn by use system better than any AAA+++ RPG dev could.

>feats will be an important aspect of character development (i.e. they won’t give you minor bonuses but help you develop your characters along specific paths

>They got lot of bad feedback on AoD's "savescum each dialog" gameplay.

That may be true, but AoD was THE C&C game, it really was a CYOA in rpg form, and I don't mean this as an insult.

CSG will be a traditional party-based rpg, with no more C&C than you'd normally get in these kinds of games. And learn by use is just a shitty system I've never seen used well, ever. The way VD describes it, you will get to learn from an action once, then the flag is set and you get no more EXP from it. This effectively locks you into the skills you picked at the start, because once you reach mid-late game, what opportunities would you get to level new skills you picked up? New content will be too high level to pass with your meager skills, and you can't grind your skill on the occasional low level shit you find.

So what then, keep using the same small skillset for the entire game and patiently wait to reach grandmaster levels?

This sounds flawed at the core to me. I trust VD's vision for the most part, but this I'm not sure about.
>>
Are they ever going to implement Mutant Chronicles style character creation in Western CRPGs? This shit is god damn stone age considering they made something that much better like 30 years ago
>>
>>165346995
I think you're overgeneralizing a bit.

>This effectively locks you into the skills you picked at the start, because once you reach mid-late game, what opportunities would you get to level new skills you picked up?
Arguably the same could be said about RPGs with classic point-buy systems. By the time you're in mid-late game the skill checks are so high that learning new skills would cost too much.

How it all works out in practice depends on the XP formula and content balancing, so it's hard to say whether a system is good or bad before we see the meat around it. Mid-late game skill checks probably give more experience than in early game - even if you fail the check.
>>
>>165347702
One idea is to have a power spectrum instead of a power scale, so that even if you could grind and improve and level indefinitely, you would never end up with 100% crits and a titanic mind boggling amount of hit points that needs continuous content scaling to justify.
>>
>>165346995
>And learn by use is just a shitty system I've never seen used well, ever.
Ultima Online did it perfectly.
Learn by use system with total skill cap and controllable skill increase/lock/decrease was perfect answer to persistence of MMORPGs, but unfortunately WoW ruined the genre by popularizing EQ's level-based model.

But does learn by use have any merit in singleplayer RPG with predefined campaign? Dunno.

Re:Kinder maybe
>>
>>165347702
Maybe I am.

But now that I've finished reading the ITS forum comments, and the ones on the Codex, I'm not any less worried. On the latter VD flat out ignored the post asking this question, on ITS he provided some answer:

>Most likely you won't be able to raise lockpick above 10 because such things are much easier to control (than combat). It would probably be designed in such a way that you can hit 10 in any skill only by tagging it. Then all we need is make sure that all lockpick opportunities and skill "books" add up to 10.

>Combat is harder to control (solo vs party members, active/passive role, optional combat, etc), so there's a need to provide extra leveling room.

and
>Too early to say. That's a question of balance and something that would be easy to tweak once the game is fully playable. In general, I don't think that running around and picking low level locks to level up another guy in a hurry is good design. If we decide that it's necessary to provide a way to level up fast, we'll use trainers that won't be available in the early game (a bonus for joining a faction, for example).

but also
>Q: I have always wanted this. My only worry is that it will still be susceptible to Elder Scrolls-style grinding of skills if there are sources of infinite XP opportunities (respawning enemies for fighting skills).
>There won't be.
>Q: The most elegant way of dealing with this is to have each level of a skill stop accepting XP points below a certain threshold. So once your melee skill is good enough you can no longer improve it by punching weak enemies, regardless of type.
>There won't be weak enemies either.

This doesn't sound reassuring. So if you want a skill, it is best to tag it and use it from the start. They will *maybe* add in trainers, but VD doesn't seem to be too interested in the idea, nor does he seem to find the lack of flexibility a concern.
>>
>>165349919
cont.

Say what you will about Elder Scrolls, but at least the system made some semblance of sense for the type of games they are. In Daggerfall you fall into a pit, you can try climbing out, and eventually you will. But it might take you in-game days, and lose you the quest you were doing. The game in its way counts on you potentially grinding a new skill, and punishes you for it if you do it while restricted by a time limit. Experience is unlimited, learn what you use works as intended here.

On the other side we have limited exp and use what you learn. Dungeon Rats showed that the AoD leveling system was perfectly fine, the problem people had with it was not a problem of the system, but how it interacted with the game's content. In Underrail the generous amount of SPs on level up solved the high skill check issue, because the exp I received from other activities allowed me to, for example start dumping 20-25 points into Hacking very late in the game, getting my skill up from 0 to 105 in a matter of few levels. It allowed me to try something new with my build without much hassle. And this was fine.

CSG apparently has limited exp the game assigns for you, mandatory long-term skill commitment, and constantly increasing challenge. And I'm not seeing what the game gains out of this instead of going the simpler tried and tested point-buy system, ITS already used with good results before.
>>
>>165349140
FFXI just let you level every job separately. That was kind of fantastic. You could just get all the levels, all it took was the same investment of effort, starting over with a different thing.
>>
>>165350036
>CSG apparently has limited exp the game assigns for you, mandatory long-term skill commitment, and constantly increasing challenge. And I'm not seeing what the game gains out of this instead of going the simpler tried and tested point-buy system, ITS already used with good results before.
it becomes a frustrating perfectionisty puzzle game for autists obviously. what's not to love.
>>
>>165350072
Shit system. That just leads to every character eventually doing everything with no appreciable differences between characters.

And it's even worse if leveling is "soft limited" by making things extremely slow and grindy.
>>
>>165350186

>>

>it becomes a frustrating perfectionisty puzzle game for autists obviously. what's not to love.
But they already tried that with AoD, I thought this was supposed to be different.
>>
>>165350687
>That just leads to every character eventually doing everything with no appreciable differences between characters.
If it's a good game then the difference is in the player's skill and personality, not their character's. The character is just an expression of the player.

What you're suggesting is that the player becomes an expression of the character that's defined by the limitations set by the game designer. That's incredibly gay. That's something a loser would do. That's some Hitler youth type shit.
>>
>>165350906
They're trying to fix something that's broken at it's fundamental core. Gamers and game designers are brainwashed by tradition and are incapable of breaking free because of the economic factors at work in development, even if they progress, they cannot drag the petulant masses with them.
>>
>>165350906
>I thought this was supposed to be different

Oh, it's different alright. VD finally found a way to deal with those pesky savescummers and force them to live with their build choices, good or bad.
>>
>>165349919
>>165350036
Okay, I have to admit some of that sounds bad coming from the lead designer.

It's not exactly news that VD is a control freak who tries to very carefully limit the gameplay available to players and completely destroy any form of emergent gameplay, but I think CSG will be at least somewhat better than AoD in that regard.
>>
>>165352123
>It's not exactly news that VD is a control freak

He couldn't deny his CEO background if he tried.

I'm sure CSG will be better about this. You don't implement a proper stealth system if you completely want to destroy emergent gameplay. I just find this direction with the stat system puzzling, to say the least. But if he finds a way to pull it off, I'm not going to complain.

I'm kind of just joking, but going purely by that, yeah. It's a skill check that can't be passed, which is in a way understandable, since you are supposed to do it in the first 5 minutes of the game. But on the other hand technically there is nothing stopping you from putting off that check until the very end of the game and returning to him as a level 25, 19 will 10 int master of psi, and he will still curbstomp you in that check like you just got your first dose of the AIDS.

once you get into the flow of the game, you learn the tricks needed to build momentum.

Things like knowing which races to recruit or subsystems to buy/upgrade to unlock green choices.

Grinding skills really is dumb, though. Unless you specifically setup a grind battle and leave it running for an hour, rapidfire weapons just do better in the long run, and shield/pilot is impossible to level up without grinding.

What I did was find a save file on the internet and unlock all the alternate ships. Didn't care to go through the game so many times...

Had great fun with the mantis boarding-party ship and left satisfied when I beat the game once.
>>
>>165407841
>Are you always buying the same ship upgrades?
The run in the image I got lucky for once with a second Burst Laser 2 and that's it. I just put upgrades toward weapons and reactor to be able to use em. Got me up to Sector 6 or 7, not sure.
I always try to go for the shield upgrades and reactors for the shield charges, but even with a single Artemis and Burst Laser 2, I still fail to survive against the three-shield ships, or barely against the double-shield ones.
>Are you always taking event risks regardless of whether your ship/crew can stand a loss?
Yes but I'm avoiding the ones I figured out are generally always shit (giant spiders, "explore asteroid field?", and "shield the other ship with your own?")
>Are you wasting early money on repairs because you took too much damage against the easier early ships?
Fuck no.
>Are you not trying out buying different weapons that you wrote off as useless?
Not enough scrap most of the time.
>Are you not trying different combinations of weapons?
Enemy shields consistently fuck with me later.
>Did you write off missiles/drones because buying resources for them seemed too bothersome?
I figured out drones are worth it, but you have to get lucky with easy enemy encounters and random events to rack up 85+ scrap for the drone rig unlock within the first Sector or two.

Buying expensive upgrades early on is usually a mistake.
Not taking damage is more important than killing fast. Hit their weapons first. Hit their drones.
There are many ways to get trough shields: burst lasers, flaks, hacking, ions, teleport.
Get cloaking and/or a defense drone to deal with missiles.
Get rid of their dodge. Hack or damage the cockpit, MC the pilot, hit the engines. Beams can't be dodged.
RNG rarely can fuck you over if you know what you're doing.

Dear god of loredump. I knew this game had a lot of text, but I was not prepared for this. There is a time and place for long, elaborate dialogues, but why, oh why does Avellone need 150 words to say "second door to the right"? It's like the Nameless One is the only person in Sigil who knows how to express himself in short sentences.

Yeah, so okay. Anyone here who played the Numanuma beta, how bad it is about this? Because I shudder to imagine a Torment that doesn't even have Avellone's style going for it. Should I still play it when it comes out, or should I try to find a buyer for my collector's edition while I still can?
>>
>>165455002
Torment would be better as Visual Novel imo.
>>
>>165455364
I don't know about that. It could use some not shit combat, but most importantly it could use an editor that mercilessly crosses out half of the filler text whenever Avellone feels like repeating basically the same sentence slightly reworded three times in a row just to make a longer paragraph.
>>
>>165455002
Everyone always recommends Torment as the best RPG ever made and I couldn't get past the first area because of just how many goddamn words everybody spits out all the time forever

Like I could've probably handled that 15 years ago when I was younger but I got other shit to do than to be quietly reading paragraphs and paragraphs of lore.
>>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxs3g0Xgh7k

Cmon its not that bad. I end up hating most VNs because their writing is too drawn out, but Torment's dialog is enjoyable.

But the combat in that game was clearly an afterthought.
>>
>>165456275
If only it was lore. Or at least something important. But he is seriously repeating the same thing again and again, using shitloads of words to say very little. For example I just encountered this gem:

>Where can I find Pharod?
>Well lad, if you are looking for Pharod, which I would say is pretty barmy of you, you are a little off the beaten path. You want to be finding Ragpicker's Square. Chant is that Pharod's set up his kip somewhere in the Square. Even an ol' fella like me who's been around the ring a few times don't know exactly where. I figure that Pharod wants to keep the dark on his location dark. If you're all bound and determined to find Pharod, go to Ragpicker's Square, and try to dig up Pharod's location from some of the locals. Try to be careful about it, since there's plenty in the Square that would make a gut-harp outta you as soon as look atcha.

I think I'm done.
>>
>>165456875
I wonder if there's a voice pack or something, cause I think if it was at least spoken dialogue it wouldn't seem as bad. Still a waste of time having to sit through it, but less direct effort required. Like an audiobook over a regular book.
>>
>>165455364
There's this podcast called Watch Out For Fireballs and one of their first great episodes is on Torment, which they summarize as having some of the best writing in the medium, but having absolutely garbage combat and the only thing preventing it from being a visual novel is the standard of CRPGs at the time always having combat.
>>
>>165457468
But listening to it would probably take even longer, and wouldn't solve the core problem. The issue is that this could be rewritten as
>Try askin' around Ragpicker's Square, but be careful who you talk to.
and nothing of value would be lost.
>>
>>165457865
But would the character in question say that?

I mean characters in RPGs should behave like real persons. Somebody just might talk with and repeat himself without actually saying much.

When everyone acts the same it becomes a problem.
>>
>>165458095
I don't know. But looking at the average amount of text I got from non-undead NPCs so far, this guy is not exactly an outlier. If he is chattier than most, I haven't noticed it.

You know what was the outlier? Walking up to Dak'kon.
>Who are you?
>A githzerai.
Good man. He is coming with me. Ignus is cool too. He is just floating there and doesn't say a word. Very refreshing guy.
>>
>>165456275

How the fuck do I know which skills to specialize in in Underrail
Is it neglectful to not have any social skills?
>>
Persuasion unlocks some things. The others not so much.

Pick at least two crafting skills and max them every level.

Mechanics is great for everyone. Some electronics is necessary if you want to make your own night vision goggles. Some chemistry lets you do molotovs. Tailoring is for light armor.
>>
>>165462327
It's ok, player characters in RPGs are always antisocial murderhobos.
>>
>>165465331
Can you actually focus on all the 8 skills you put 15 points into at character creation or is that too many?
I went with melee/stealth/hacking/mechanics/electronics/all three psi skills for my psi/intelligence guy
>>
>>165467701
8 skills is really the minimum. You can increase skills only by +5 each level and get 40 skillpoints on levelup.

So you can keep those 8 always maxed, but you don't need to max everything at higher levels so you'll probably end up getting couple of skills more.
>>
>>165468218
Alright, thanks
Knowing myself, I'll probably never get another skill anyway cause I'll be scared of spreading the points too thin
>>
>>165467701
You can't focus on less skills actually since you get 40 sp a level and at most you can put 5 into a skill (unless you didn't max it each level previously, then you can put 40 sp in dodge if you want to.)
>>
>>165462327
>Is it neglectful to not have any social skills?
You won't be able to resolve some of the quests in optimal ways and get the best endings without persuasion, but you still have access to all the content.

Intimadate is far less useful than persuasion as far as dialogue goes, but it can be used in combat with the Yell feat.

Mercantile is pretty much the only useless skill in the game right now because you will end up with tons of money anyways.

That said, the next patch will most likely introduce trader mercantile checks that will make them sell better stuff and higher quality components.
>>

It already does, would be very strange if it got scrapped from the final patch.

>It already does
What you are playing is a testing branch though.

It might get reworked in the actual patch. It's still not really worth investing points into mercantile.
>>
>>165471287
What >>165471446 said. It was not in your mind, he took control of your body, had you walk out of the station, swim to the island and then give control back to you so you could kill the bug. Then he once again took control and brought you back, then dumped your body in your room where it's safe. He is a nice guy like that.
>>
>talk to a few people

This game is amazing
I like how "can change temperature" somehow translates to throwing icicles out of nowhere
Can I save the free skill I get from Quinton until I can train the expensive ones? It probably won't matter since they only cost like 150 anyway but still
>>
>>165474429
Oh also, how the fuck does stealth work?
>stealth up
>rathound doesn't see me
>use psi punch on rathound
>as soon as my character walks into range, rathound spots me and still gets the first action
>>
>>165474592
Your stealth was not high enough to get into range before the Rathound spotted you. Next time if you think you are close enough to get everything done with your 50 APs initiate combat while you are still hidden.
>>
>>165474896
Higher stealth lets you get closer even when in line of sight? Because holy fuck these things are changing directions every 2 seconds
Initiating combat first and then walking closer with my AP should work though, thanks
>>
>>165474143
>It's still not really worth investing points into mercantile

It can get you some MK IV traps and grenades though, which is not a bad deal if you don't need large quantities of them and don't want to invest in crafting.
>>
>>165475126
MK II EMPs and more W2C ammo too, plus some bretty gud components.
>>
>>165475027
Sure, stealth is not binary. If your stealth is high enough you can stand right next to them for seconds before their suspicion bar fills up and they finally notice you. However you always get de-stealthed on contact, so if you bump into someone, so much for your stealth.
>>
>>165474429
Don't let anyone fool you with their scientific babble about psi. Forget that crap. You're a wizard Harry. You'll be setting the world on fire in no time.

>>
>>165476359
You get a stat point every 4 levels.

But more importantly than that you can craft headbands and psibeetle armor with -psicost mod
>>
>>165476359
>Is it possible to raise my psi regen though, except for the initial will and intelligence stats?

Um... nah, nope.
Although you can raise your will and intelligence higher later. You'll get a new stat point every four levels.
>>
>>165476648
>>165476607

>>
>>165474592
>>165475027
I remember it clearly explained ig, but stealth makes you unnoticed until the detection meter fills out. It's indicated by the eye above characters and critters.
It goes from green (unnoticed) to yellow (suspicious), orange (very suspicious), red (enemy can see you and target you).

You also detect stealth-ed enemies progressively, their silhouette fading in as you detect them. You can't target them until their name show up, at which point you also see their detection meter if you yourself are in stealth. You can still gleefully toss a nade at them while they're still barely visible though.

Declaring combat with RETURN always gives you first turn, and this also goes for enemies. This is why crawlers will get first turn if you let them stalk close enough.
>>
>>165477852
I don't think the game told me that there's a meter (though someone else mentioned it earlier), I assumed it was just red as soon as they see you
>>
>>165477993
If it goes instantly from green to red it means that their detection was much higher than your stealth, so much higher that your stealth is completely useless against them.

If you check your Combat Stats, you can see your own Stealth, Detection, and Trap Detection level under Defense.
>>
>>165475126
>>165475241
The thing is, If I wanted MK IV nades, I would just take chemistry and enjoy all the other benefits that come with it. Same with EMPs and I never really had trouble with availability of W2C ammo except for early game. Better quality components are cool, but do you really think those few measly points of damage are really worth all those skill points?

Skill points are really valueable and you can never have enough on most builds. Mercantile would need tomake the traders sell some really high quality components and crafting-only gear of all types to be truly woth spending points in.

Also I think unique quest rewards gated behind mercantile checks owuld be cool as well. Kinda like the mysterious magnum in New Vegas being hidden behind 50 barter check.
>>
>>165477993
Are you exploring the metro level? I did the same thing before even doing my very first quests.

There are lunatics and lurkers that are comparatively much higher level than you there so your measly 30 stealth basically doesn't exist to them.
>>
>>165479149
Naw, I only fought some rathounds and the tutorial bots, but they all easily spotted me
>>
>>165479396
