Dude, there's a ton of trigger events that you need to play the game to see, some random, some seasonal. They're the source of like 99% of emotional attachment to your maids, though vast majority of them don't have any sex. Haven't played H RPG for a while, anything translated recently?

Do you guys ever felt like "there are too many h-CGs in this title" when playing a non-nukige eroge? Not that I don't like h-scenes in my VN, but sometimes, especially when two h-scenes pops out in quick succession, I felt that the scenes are less rewarding and become more of a chore to read. If I want fuckfest, I would play a nukige instead of moege. Can't help but think that these kind of eroge could use the time for more relaxing couple-bonding non-h CGs to enjoy instead, or scenes of her with other characters and unchosen heroines so that those characters don't suddenly vanished when the player entered a heroine route.

Okay, some tips.
1 - Do NOT start translating until you can translate straight from the scripts without having to frequently check dictionaries. Translating is time consuming enough on its own and if you're poor enough at Japanese that you need to worry about *comprehending* the Japanese as much as *translating* it, then a project that should only take a couple months may end up taking like a year, it's ridiculous. Wait until you're good at Japanese, for the sake of more accurate TLs and for your own time.
2 - Decide upon a set number of lines a day, and ALWAYS do that number of lines a day. It really helps with burnout to know exactly when you'll finish (5,000 line game, 100 lines a day = 50 days and done), and it's motivating to know that once you finish your X number of lines, you can relax and do whatever you want without worrying about your project.
3 - Try to target the "idea" more than what's literally being said. Indeed, trying to 1:1 translate what the Japanese says will result in a pretty dang awkward script. The easiest example of this is that Japanese grammar is structured backwards compared to English, so if you always translate literally, a LOT of your sentences will be in a yoda-esque order (e.g. "when I touched her, she cried out" vs "she cried out when I touched her" x 10000)
3.5 - Do NOT translate your favourite game first, or even second. Following the above, translating is just as much a writing job as a translating job - you need to be a good writer, and according to most good writers, the way to get better at writing is to read and WRITE a lot, and as a translator, you will be writing a lot. So, your first project will objectively be worse than your fifth or such, like, objectively worse. Starting off with your favourites will leave them with mediocre translations probably forever. Stick to games you LIKE, but don't LOVE, for the first couple projects as you improve your writing - don't be afraid and put them off forever, though.

I think a lot of translators make a big mistake by starting so early. It gives them a wrong image of translation. It takes longer for them than it should, it's harder than it really is (and it's hard in the first place, so that's double bad), and so on. There's actually a lot of variance between them with themes: Mesu Kyoushi 4 had a theme of squirting orgasm and pregnancy (along with the teacher theme ofc), whereas Sansha Mendan had a theme of threesomes with a light incest twinge (mother/daughter, two twin sisters). I'd just like to point out that ChiiTransLite is an amazing tool to get a shortcut for this. It is literally a walking dictionary and with it you'll take like 0.5 seconds to check anything you didn't understand.

The only thing it has an issue with is parsing, but you shouldn't be a translator unless you can understand that "どこか……他に悪いとこないか調べないとな" isn't talking about an evil cousin (悪い_とこ rather than 悪_いとこ what CTL reads it as). And parsing is fixed by painting over kanji and hitting space, there, it's now longer talking about an evil cousin.

The point isn't just that the process of using a dictionary is time consuming, but rather, the process of working to understand something you don't know is time consuming. It may take 0.5 seconds to look up a word with chii-trans (putting aside the fact that a translator works in spreadsheets, not through the game), but the time spent reading the definition, re-reading the sentence with the new meaning, etc, is time consuming. Basically, it's time consuming to read Japanese if you don't know Japanese very well, and mixing in translation with that results in a pretty damn significant time drain that shouldn't exist. If you can't read a sentence and translate it on the spot, you're going to spend hundreds of your translation hours studying Japanese instead of actually translating, which basically is a waste of time. If you still need dictionary assistance to read, focus on improving your Japanese before you translate - save yourself the translation hours.

Not to mention, if you have to look up a bunch of words, then your translations are pretty much guaranteed to contain excessive inaccuracies given that you don't know Japanese very well. Not only will it take longer to translate, but it was also not be a good translation. So it's better to wait to translate not just as a time investment, but for the sake of better translations as well.

It does not say that. To be more clear, by "a sentence" I mean "the vast majority of sentences" - a given sentence. Obviously, there's going to be an occasional word (why single out kanji? unknown words are far more common than unknown kanji) any translator doesn't know, but there's a big difference between not knowing some words and being completely reliant on a dictionary every line because you don't know Japanese in the first place. I don't think it's absurd to recommend waiting until one actually knows Japanese to start translating.

As for motivation... why exactly one would lose motivation to translate after learning Japanese? Why do you think every translator only has motivation when they don't know Japanese well? That doesn't make any sense. What kills translator motivation isn't whether or not they know Japanese, it's the fact that translation is a helluva lot of work and takes a lot of time. It takes less time and is easier the better one knows Japanese, so if people waited until they knew Japanese well, their motivation would be a lot more solid as their experience with translating would be more positive.

And by the way, "knowing every kanji" is a weird metric to use of ability. I simply said, "without having to frequently use a dictionary". That accepts that nobody is perfect, but upholds a standard of comprehension that is more than reasonable.

Moving to click to over the game every line will still add up the time. We're talking a very small amount of time that chiitrans saves, at that point just using an e-dictionary will take about the same amount as time. So, no, chiitrans really won't save that much time. What is chiitrans good for? Hooking text straight out of the game. What is a script? The text hooked straight out of the game.

Kanji are not that hard. It's a big hurdle in the beginning, but once you've spent a lot of time with Japanese and become comfortable with it, they're as easy to read as letters. Frankly, someone singling out kanji as difficult is a big warning sign for me, saying that the person isn't good at Japanese and hasn't spent much time with it*. If a translator is still struggling with kanji, that means they definitely shouldn't be translating at all as they aren't even literate and are probably pretty bad at the language.

So, in other words... you want to encourage people who have less than a year's experience in Japanese, who aren't even literate, to translate, because you know they'll give up in despair of how terrible they are at the language? To summarize:
I think people should learn Japanese before translating, so they can have a better time translating and make better translations.

Your standards are impossibly high, we wouldn't get porn game translations at all if people had to spend a thousand hours studying before they could even attempt it.
