Those things are nice step forward for companies but we reached those steps very late compared to other genres.

Other genres were already doing stuff like updates without the need to buy additional discs way before fighting game companies.

When we had to wait so much for decisions like that shows you that the genre is much more beyond that any other genres in the videogame industry.

Funny enough it's the old company who were considered good at the times now constantly fucking up.

This is a thing I read very often from fighting game fans, blaming the newer generations because they don't understand the appeal of fighting games since they're spoiled with team-based multiplayer games, but I don't see how that's true.

Some of the strongest players in fighting games happen to be very young. NuckleDu just recently won Capcom Cup 2016 and he's very young. Go1 used to play Melty Blood and now he's one of the best Chun-Li players in SFV. As much as you hate the guy, SonicFox is very consistent with the victories on his games. John Takeuchi pretty much started with SFV and he's already the third strongest Rashid player in Japan.

I think the opposite. Younger players find more easy to adapt to the "hard to get into, harder to master" mentality. than older players. Once you are too old you don't translate too well for the next fighting game iteration, while lots of player who honestly admitted to be '09ers whopped their old asses.

I think Alex Valle and old FGC personalities are largely the fault for cementing this negative idea around younger players.

I think a good commentator doesn't necessarely have to be good at a game, but he has to at least understand what happens on screen.

Logansama may be a Silver rank Ken player, but maybe he can understand what happens on screen. Also personality is really important these days. If you are too serious about commentating despite sharing solid information about what's happening on screen it becomes a borefest.

This is why commentators like Aris are really entertaining to hear. If you have at least a basic understanding of the game you are commentating on and on top of that you add your own flavour to the commentary it becomes fun and interesting.

Tribes isn't particularly unique, Ascend was modernizing what already existed with Tribes 2

Titanfall 2 and R6 Siege are probably the best example of actually pushing the genre forward. TF2 for nailing both skill based movement and balanced asymmetrical gameplay and Siege for making a character based shooter (hero shooter, whatever you want to call it) and having it actually be competitively viable.

When you're talking about fighting games "growing" it obviously means with a bigger public, which is where these considerations come into play. The big public doesn't have as much interest in single 1v1 contests of skills. They prefer team games because they are social experiences they can play with their friends and also because of all the usual "get carried by team and blame team when you lose thing". Also the fact that on a basic level most of these games are much easier than fighting games.
