A real programming language is anything that is compiled to machine code or bytecode; anything that is not interpreted or JITed.
Scripting languages are not programming languages, hence called scripting. I.e. Python, Haxe, GML etc.

Standalone from an engine. But since he says "not enginedevving" I assume he means e.g. C# in Unity or C++ in Unreal.

C has a runtime, does that make it not a real programming language?

I use LiceCAP because I can't be bothered to boot up capture software that can't natively capture WEBM thus requiring me to do a manual conversion on the file etc. With LiceCAP I just make a GIF, hurl it onto GFYCAT, download the webmresult, and post it here. Sorry for the downgrade in quality resulting.

I'm sorry the thread is so shit, but the answer is yes, you can
unity if you want to use c#
ue4 or godot if you want to use c++
also, enginedevving is blown way out of proportion in these threads. For 2D It's very easy to use either c# with monogame, java with libgdx, or c++ with sfml or sdl and enginedev for a week and then work on your own game with your own engine

Finally got around to some AI scripting. So AI has their routine, that they stick to. If you mess with it, they have some priorities they take care off first.

One of those is the light. Their top priority is to turn it back on, then they return to their routine (for now it's just walking back and forth, in final version it's gonna be cooking).

If you do it too much, characters become too suspicious and panic (run away).

Say, I'm working on GMS and the tile-based levelmaking is absolute fucking dogshit, and even though I know GMS2's level editor is better I'm not gonna have access to it in a long time, if at all for this project.

How should I approach tile-based levels? Should I make a small map editor in-game to ease the process and test it in real time, use an external editor, or make it something like one big background image with the whole level and add only the boundaries, effects, objects, etc?

Also, if they see a floating item, they need a bit of time to register it, meaning it gives you enough time to drop it or move away.

If they see a dead body, they panic instantly and run away.

I also added some UI changes for that (the portrait colour and the question mark/exclamation point).

Actually that video is what gave me the idea to do that.
There are two downwards facing raycasts for the character, one detects if he's grounded and the other detects if he's still in the upward stage of his jump. Basically, if the player is still holding the jump button after he leaves the ground but during the ascent, their gravity will be lowered until they reach the ground again.
It's probably not the most elegant way to handle it, but it's all I could come up with using my meager knowledge.

Name ten games that haven't used an engine made in the last eight years that derives from any other engine that's existed before. That includes unity, unreal, game maker, cryengine, sam-engine, any quake-derived engine, any source-derived engine, and so on and so forth.

Godot isn't any different from other engines.
You can have objects that are simulated by the physics engine. To control these objects via code you have to apply physics forces. In Godot you do this in _integrate_forces() callback by applying velocity. You can also use joints/pins etc in the editor, you can use Area2D to apply physics effects in a certain area, such as wind

Kinematic bodies are not simulated but can collide and affect other simulated bodies. In Godot you move them with move(), which resolves collision and will always end up non-colliding

If I'm making a game with multiple level themes that all share the same basic types of tiles (corner, middle, etc), what would be an effective way of getting the right image? I'm currently thinking a list of lists, where the first list holds the list of themes, then goes into that list to get the right tile.

Or are there any better suggestions? It's dynamic so it isn't a case of me manually placing each tile and picking what it looks like while building a level.

Not much to "show off" because most of the changes were to make the game run better and load levels faster. After cleaning up some code it's back to generating levels in moments even on mobile devices.

Looking into rewriting some of the stuff for images so planets can have more variety in appearance again, since I broke that overhauling generation, then tying up some loose ends so people can try it as a demo while I add the fancy things I've been wanting to make.

to be fair I actually LIKE lua on paper, it's just frustrating actually using it

like arrays are tables, which are objects but not really, and if you actually want a numerically-indexed array you have to create the keys ahead of time

and there's no string.split, you have to string.gmatch and regex it and there's apparently no character for new lines?

and all variables are global until proven otherwise, which is certainly simple but has fucked my debugging twice already

it could just be I'm not used to it, and I guess I can be ok with that. love2d is really cool and I like the simplicity of the load / update / draw system. I just keep finding more weird shit in lua and I'm worried it's not going to end.

Actually, it gets better if you put some time into it, can't get around that part unfortunately if you really want to get into lua.
I do agree that some of their decisions are weird though, like that fucking index starting at 1 wtf.

I haven't used it for a while but I'm pretty sure that there is a way to achieve scope with variables.
See, that's the problem with those alternatives. They want to be simple, but in reality they aren't if you don't put enough time in them and this is why most people would rather put all that time in more common languages.

Fair point, but I really like how dynamic lua's tables are after you get used to them. Not only can you mix and match dictionaries and indexed values into a single table, you can also write your own table functions as you please (if, say, tables starting at 1 is not your cup of tea).

Not only this, but how you can manipulate metatables gives a lot of flexibility and opportunities for object orientation, among other things.

Here's a visual depiction of what I meant. On the left you have the upside of only accessing the information you want, but on the right you can customize the dialogue better like...
>What's your name, sweetie?
>And how old are you, [name]?
>That's an interesting name, where is it from?

Should I keep it like the left, but only unlock the name/nationality arcs once you ask her name? Or allow you to ask all 3 at once, but have different dialogue for asking age/nationality based on if you had previously asked her name?

Or maybe small-talk can build up some "familiarity" stat, or just increase her comfortableness with you, allowing you to ask her more things with her answering them. (Otherwise she could just be like "Mommy told me not to talk to strangers..." or something, which could then possibly decrease her comfortableness with you?)

how about sticking mostly to the left, but setting flags for what information a NPC knows when a question is answered. if certain information is known to an NPC, instead of returning back to "can I ask a question", they'll take the initiative and ask you a question that logically follows.

this way you can craft stuff like suspicion and curiosity and more personality in general, without turning the character interactions into cutscenes or textbox dispensers?

No, I mean the sprites don't look like they're just standing there, they look like they're turning instead of just popping to face the proper direction. ex. a 30* angle sprite looks like more or less than the 30* angle facing.

maybe it wouldn't be noticeable in small corridors or something, but in the open it's disorienting.
>>
>>164802989
I propose we place in the OP a short sentence about the shitposting and a link to the most up to date filter list
>>
>>164801236
I don't think lua's perfect but just like anything else weirdness just becomes normalcy after a bit and lua's pretty good about not making things persistent issues

>like arrays are tables, which are objects but not really, and if you actually want a numerically-indexed array you have to create the keys ahead of time
If you have an array without any nils in it, that counts as an array every time, the create the keys ahead of time thing is just an optimization strategy, and not one that comes up super often imo

>and there's no string.split, you have to string.gmatch and regex it and there's apparently no character for new lines?
for simple string operations like that I just google and stick them in a "misc functions" file and move on. It's not as convenient as, say, python, but I have problems with how much stuff is built into python too so~. '\n' should work for newlines, I dunno what the problem is there.

>and all variables are global until proven otherwise, which is certainly simple but has fucked my debugging twice already
This is an actual problem, but this snippet:
http://metalua.luaforge.net/src/lib/strict.lua.html
can help by making it impossible to make a new global variable by assigning to it. That + luacheck catches almost 100% of the global/shadowing variable stuff for me ahead of time.

It's more of the attitude the game gives you when playing it, CUHRAYZEE is more about being stylish and making it look effortless.

Most SHMUPS are about a one man army against all odds, sometimes impossible ones. So I think intense and rockin shit makes more sense, both the protagonist and the player should have their blood pumping, it's not really about looking cool, it's about saying "FUCK YOUR ODDS. I'M A -MAN-"

The entire soundtrack from Thunder Force IV is a good example.

>>

Generic problems as in problems that aren't specific to one person's use case. Those aren't against the rules, but they're not encouraged because they don't help the wiki aspect of the site much (though they could still be useful on the off chance someone has the exact same problem).

Broad questions are against the rules because they're also useless in a wiki but they also can't be objectively answered so there's no point in having them bloating search results or whatever.

Obviously this is being idealistic and so there are exceptions in practice like >>164813517 points out.

As someone that knows how to program and could easily use SFML, XNA, SDL, etc to make a game, is it still worth it to use an engine like Godot or GameMaker 2 to eliminate a lot of the tedious boilerplate behind things like input polling, setting up state machines for the game loop, setting up renderers, etc, or do the cons of using an engine outweigh that?
>>
>>164814917
its faster to get started with an engine but i usually have to rewrite those systems anyway. for example my game in unity i started out with the built in physics and input but by now ive had to port my monogame collision code over and need to replace the input system soon
>>
>>164814917
If you know how to use those AND design a proper system (hacked together job that "works" is not good design), then you don't need to use an engine. You also won't be limited by what an engine offers as well as any licensing if it's proprietary.

If you just need something quick and easy to make a game then an engine is the way to go.

there's no point in wasting your time with that

From reading the description it sounds not great. ECS done right has zero boilerplate in the first place so I don't see the value in having a library for it.

>It even has basic collision detection already optimized, shit.
You get that as part of any physics library; they typically allow you to use collision without physics if you want. I thought you were making a tile-based game, though?
>>
>>164816983
mit license though
>>
>>164817334
That's true. I guess the only boilerplate with setting up an ECS structure would be the minimal amount of code it takes to write the structures for storing components and checking the components of entities.

...and with tile-based, I wouldn't really need real collision detection anyway, I could just check grid array positions when things move or target....

Hmmm...

But....the window handling......!!!!
I guess I could just fucking do that myself.

>I guess the only boilerplate with setting up an ECS structure would be the minimal amount of code it takes to write the structures for storing components and checking the components of entities.
You don't even need that. I find designing your ECS so that anything could have any component creates more problems than it solves.

K I've been working on my camera system a bit and I think I have a decent one after hearing some feedback. It follows you around now completely, and slightly rotates up until a point when you go in one of the eight directions, letting you see a bit further of whats infront of you. Opinions?
>>
>>164821424
That's quite good. Be careful with the controls, though. With WASD or arrow keys or whatever, you'll be fine having the player not move exactly parallel/perpendicular to the view direction, but with a joystick you will want the view direction to factor into how the player moves. Know what I mean?
>>
>>164821424
you forgot to showcase what happens when you walk backwards
>>
>>164821602
Yeah I honestly don't know what I'm going to do about that. Pretty much the entire control/camera system right now is revolving around using wasd and not a joystick.

I'm wondering how huge of a deal it would be if I kept it exclusive to being keyboard/mouse only
>>
>>164821792
Well you just rotate the basis for the movement based on the camera's direction if you're moving with a joystick.

Your game needs the mouse, though, right? You might not have to worry, then.

Got a newbie Godot problem.

Is there some reason why my kinematicbody2d would work when I set it as a trigger but not normally? Whenever I write any code in its _fixed_process function, the program takes forever to start and the sprite doesn't appear (unless I set it as a trigger, but then it doesn't collide with anything). The demo for the kinematicbody2d sprite works just fine, but the version I created is broken. I'm wondering if maybe there's some sort of physics/collision option you have to enable or if it's just something totally random

I'm interested in trying to make my own game. A little 2D RPG or something. Not to make money or anything but as a hobby, something to do in my spare time. Problem is I don't have any clue how to do any of this.

My questions are simple ones.

What are some good free (or cheap if I have to pay) tutorials for coding and what not?

Which engines are good for a newbie?

Anything else useful that I may not have thought of myself?
>>
>>164829082

>>
>>164829082

>>
>>164829082
Check out Gamemaker and Godot. Both are free and newbie friendly engines. They're goth great at 2D as well.

Once you choose an engine look up tutorials and examples, learn from that. It will likely take you a long time to get the hang of things, don't worry, this is normal. Do not give up!

Bunch of things really, depends on what you want. Could go for attaching actors to actors at a socket, so you'd have seperate actors for each module, then just destroy them and put another one on at switch.

Many ways to do this though. Could just all be one actor that changes the meshes of one big gun component and the firing logic.

I used to think ideas were hot shit. But they're just that, shit. They're 0.01% of making a game. You can have the best idea in the world, putting it to practice will fuck it like an entire field of horses and the end result will be nothing like the ideal.

creative sparks don't mean shit if they never go anywhere, standing out from the crowd doesn't mean shit if you don't have a game to sell, art doesn't mean shit if nobody looks at it

there's a reason literally everyone who ever got anywhere says "i got here by hard work, learning from my mistakes, and getting lucky"

even george lucas had to write a fucking script at some point

sitting around thinking "hey wouldn't it be neat if we went to the moon" didn't get NASA into space, 4 billion hours of science and progress did

Having good ideas is everything but simple. You'd be surprised how bad people can be at designing games, even though they can programm like a master.

You must have huge knowledge about the genre you are making a game before being able to come up with something worthwhile.

Ideas for a game are kinda like writing a story. Everything must fit together in order to have good gameplay. And writing stories is really not easy.
>>
How hard would something like Souls gameplay be? Not Souls itself, but that kind of gameplay. Third person, sword and board or what-have you.
>>
>>164833692

>>
>>164833692

>>164833692
I think the difficult part about RPGs is just that they are so long. You'd have to create thousands of rooms and assets for it to be worthwhile.

I'd rather make a short game when working alone.
>>
>>164833948
The indie way to solve that is to make every room randomized and slightly harder over time
>>
>>164833173
i want to give you feedback but i'm not sure about the state of your game. for example, i really don't like the reflective properties of those blue things which disappear, it reminds me too much of plastic and i'm not sure where the light is coming from? the color of the lights on the level below is yellow-ish but they reflect white? either way, i'd prefer a wood/stone for reflective properties, i think that fits the theme better. then, i also don't think that you've nailed the animation. it might be because bokube is too fat and triggers their disappearance before he even touches them. i think you should lerp their alpha down to 0 instead of making them vanish in an instant.

do you have some dirt to cover those graves? it kinda looks weird when the zombies climb out of that type of floor.

and how about some spiderwebs?

the skeleton in the background is a nice touch.

Are you serious? Your point is "well, here's all these people who clearly don't have interesting ideas, but people still played their games and here we are talking about them?"

if you're in it for the money: how many copies of an idea can you sell?
If you're in it for fun: how much enjoyment can someone get out of you having an idea?
if you're in it for art: how much art is there in doing absolutely fucking nothing?

Shit-all, that's how much.

>>164833450
>>164833563
Good ideas are fucking non-existent until you actually work that shit out and see it in action. Everyone thinks they're having good ideas, nobody finds out how bad those ideas are until they see it crystal fucking clear in front of them.

Remember "I may have gone a little too far in some places?" Remember Peter Molyneux's entire career?

Ideas are just guessing. "Hey, this might work." Yeah, you're more likely to be right if you're informed and well-read in the genre (as per >>164833450), but at the end of the day nobody knows if an idea's a good idea until they get it off paper and into practice, and nobody CARES if it was a good idea until you present something workable.

Hell, that's why people come to agdg looking for feedback. Sometimes even when you have the thing in front of you it's hard to tell if it's good.

Yes, and the fucked up thing is Dark Souls does borrow some elements from Metroid with backtracking and usually a nonlinear progression.

I prefer actual metroid games that actually expand your moveset and abilities though, I never cared how souls games stick you with a basic moveset for the entire game.

Why are gay personalities always prone to drama? is it just their inner need to become the center of attention or something? I noticed this too in the furry community which is about 98.9% full of gayshit.

tl;dr Why can't fags not be histrionic morons? I'm pretty gay myself but still know how to self contain, and not stir up stupid drama.

The greatest and worst ideas in the world don't mean shit in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. You could sit down, right now, and make yet another indie pixel platformer, and if you make it WELL people will PLAY IT because that's how it WORKS.

Those trash pixel indie games are trash because they're trash, not because their ideas weren't Good Enough for the psychic video games maelstrom or some shit.

>if you make it WELL people will PLAY IT because that's how it WORKS
it does not work that way.
the "if you build it, they will come" concept is a myth, especially in this industry

there are tons of games that are well made that are commercial failures
how many people play a game is based in part on marketing, but mostly on luck

Worked for Notch, didn't it?

But yeah, for the most part you're right, and that's not what I meant. What I meant was, you can (and really should) market your game to shit and back, but if you ask around and everyone's saying "yeah I played it and it was shit," you're probably not going to waste your time and money on it.

So, making your game well leads to more people playing it.
