Focus on more defenses early on. If you wait until you actually need them to make turrets and walls you're likely to be overrun.

My tip is to set up a small thing that collects stone and crafts walls to dump in a chest, then use those walls to completely surround your base.

Good lord, they didn't just "fix" them, that is like a complete overhaul fixing patch.
On the bright side, now piston rods are solid once again, and you can use them to push up your car even without the head.
Wheels are pretty much the same as yesterday. Definitely worth a try, with some fine tuning they're quite good.
When a car can work without gyros for more than 2 seconds it means that they're going the right way.

I started out with huge guns because of that very impulse, but then as I built things got smaller and smaller. 100mm frag at 1300 rounds per minute is the best round because fucking shields. So all of my ships are very small and use that coupled with missile swarms and particle cannons.

I really dislike shields in this game. Almost everything worth worrying about uses them and so I just build everything I have to hard counter them.

Any ideas what might be causing steam engines in FtD to not work? I've built an assembly with 4 pistons on each crank, and it worked fine. It's a fairly simple build, really. Has been possible since 2014 at least.
Build every segment from the same type of grid (don't mix small and large), then link together with merge blocks.
Use timers to control separation and prevent thrusters from igniting preemptively.

Added the req mods, given there's two jets in the hanger that may not fly without aerodynamics.

FYI, there's a small ground base (with slowly descending/eventually crashing ship) and a satellite/station with another one of the ships parked next to it. All the turrets are off by default, so don't worry about ownership resetting making them wreck everything.

Factorio and FtD would go together really well. Real world turrets are like little towers with a complex system of inner and outer rings for getting the shells from the ship onto the bottom floor of the turret while it's rotating, where it then works its way up.

Setting up all the little ammo crates and processors, conveyors to take the shells away to the turrets then all the little gizmos to carry it onto and up through the turret.

For example, the bags of gunpowder need to get from the ships magazines to the turret tower which is constantly rotating in some battles. You can either put crew members there to move the bags manually like they do IRL or you can factorio it with robot arms and conveyors etc.

I don't know why, but after more than 4 months they still didn't fix the suspensions settings not updating when the slider moves.
Power, grip, suspension travel and steering settings don't require the block trick, you can just move them and they'll work as expected, I don't know about the dampening.

The fact that it moves a marginal amount is irrelevant, mine do too but it is not what you're changing. That changes only when the grid is updated (for me the block trick works).

Increase the strength to the max and set the offset to the highest negative value you can.
Notice that when you place them it is in a wrong amount that can't be set (-45 on 3x3 small grid for example while max offset is -32) , you have to first put it to zero.
Also notice that doing it this way, if they actually respond and update their settings your rover is gonna jump in the air, so bear it in mind.

Its actually intended to have hardly any thrusters, there's 2-4 ions in each direction and those main hydrogens. It has two tanks, which should be enough for short boosts. The concept is based off another anon further up in the thread making something that mainly uses jump drives to get around, with hidden thrusters (didn't pan out, would have been to bulky).

I have a bad habit of making my ships intentionally un-maneuverable too, especially capital ships.

It isn't a pain if you have somewhere to start and have used C#, but surely isn't as easy as other way to code (said by someone that has little to no experience with coding).
By the way, since you went through all the pain to make a small grid near your cockpit, you might as well do it properly and use text panels (which are just 1x1 lcds) and have 3 on each side, maybe rotating away to let you enter the cockpit and then turning back in position.
That allows a little more customization if you want to use more than one script, and since they'd be closer to the cockpit you can use a smaller font, making up for smaller panel.

I think the water drag is related to the amount of ship surface that is in contact with the water, because pontoon like design tend to go real fast.

Last time I played, which was a long time ago, I made a boat using a pontoon like design, so basically a aerodynamic platform with a air-filled tank on each side about a good 20 feet lower with one or two propeller on each tank (if you make the pontoon correctly only the tanks are supposed to be in contact with the water, but it doesn't have to be perfect) and with a lead oar on each to keep stability on the entire thing. You'd be surprised at how effective it was, I could go in the +50 m/s and make turn on a penny, sadly I never actually used it in an actual fight because my toaster couldn't handle the stress. Also I remember that It had some problem with stability with cannons, which I had remedied to by reducing the angling range of the turret else I the recoil was strong enough to flip the ship over, while quite an amusing sight it make it kind of useless.

Much as I despise pressurized vessels, I find the airlock design even worse.
Instead of a single button, use two sensors and a number of timers.
Could probably use fewer blocks by programming, but whatever.

Sensor 1 (S1) is placed where the current button is and detects friendly players close by the entry

The spengie then walks into the airlock, where S2 detects him

T1 disables S1, closes the outside door and sets the airlock to pressurize, also starts T2, which triggers a few seconds later.

Once the spengie walks into the ship, he leaves S2's field, triggering T3
T3 closes the inner door and starts to depressurize the airlock, also starts T4, which triggers a few seconds later
T4 enables S1

Done this way, your guests won't have to stand outside in cold space while waiting for the door to open.
Hospitality rating increased by 7%. If you really want to bump it up, include interior lights (both in the control room and at the airlock) to display readiness status.
Of course, you'd probably need a completely different set of sensors/timers to walk out of the airlock. Alternatively, use something like webm

Nevermind, apparently it works now. ACB blocks set to activate on inputs was the way.

AI can't handle sidewheel turning though so it still needs a rudder. It gets stuck trying to perfect the aim and overcorrecting.

Once you research logistics you'll unlock splitters and underground belts.
There's at least a dozen clever contraptions using those, that'll allow you to manipulate the placement of items on a belt. see pic.

No, the internal buffer does not contribute to the backup.
If inserters were to put fifty items into a machine, you would still get a backup as the rate of consumption is unchanged.
The backup would only be delayed.

That being said, there's nothing inherently bad about an excess of raw materials.

Then see if you have checked the "disable reverse" on the naval AI.
Then, check if the AI is in combat mode. Maybe it's on fleet move and that's why it's fleeing.

This latest one hasn't met expectations the laser and engines are took weak. Steam turbines were tested but daaaaaamn is that shit slow to get going. Ship will probably need a ground up redesign or forget about efficiency and install a much more compact but much more powerful engine.

If anyone knows how to max out the responsiveness on steam turbines that would be great.

I mentioned before I enjoy making my ships have gaping flaws on purpose for no real reason. So cargo haulers (smaller ones like this) wouldn't have weapons, huge capital ships would be slow to turn and accelerate/decelerate, etc. It's silly but intentional, anyway.

Eh, I know it's not great but I'm lazy and am actually just getting to know the technical blocks in this game. Despite playing for fucking ages I never bothered with engineering stuff before more recently.

This is why when you put boost to shit you gap your rings bigger. If they heat up too much and expand beyond their gap they can cut the top of the piston off. Boosted engine? Rings back and further gapped.

The problem is that the mod authors don't know shit about fluid mechanics or the game engine and think bigger number is better. I have a deep-seated hatred of some of the mod authors.

Anyway, here is a fluid response curve I tested out a while back. I tried to shove a LOT of water through a pipe, varied the length of the pipe, and measured what came out the other side. These are steady state numbers.

Well adding dediblades defeats the purpose of helium pumps, if I use that many dediblades I might as well have just made a wooden and metal balloon supported by them. I finally figured out why I only build small ships. Big ships require far too much tedious block places. I prefer spending a lot of time designing it and a small amount of time building it. I'm almost 50/50 for this guy and most of the blocks aren't even placed yet.

I initially suspected it had to do with how the input is exactly equals to the output (150 water/s), so I replaced input pumps with pipes, allowing free flow.
As a result, water temperature plummeted, power production stalled and the system crashed. Lesson learned.
After going through a few more fuckups, I've ended up with this. There's only visible water circulation in the first "square" of the off-shoot branch, and the entire branch is slowly filling up (6.4 to 6.7 took 10 minutes).
