What is the point of Aria T'Loak as a character? What does she represent as a part of the setting, what is she supposed to mean to the player? What's the meaning of her character?

Compare her to Lord Darius (ME1). He's a petty criminal warlord that rose to power because the Alliance gave him weapons, enabling the region to be stabilized for development. However he has become too powerful and he wants to Alliance to treat him as an equal and an independent ruler of a nation. He demands that the Alliance solidify this deal by acknowledging he has exclusive ownership of a massive supply of valuable element zero and also that the Alliance help him manufacture and distribute Red Sand, a powerful and dangerous narcotic. Now as it turns out Admiral Hackett sends Shepard to negotiate with him covertly as a means to have Darius assassinated since he is no longer needed. Hackett manipulates Shepard to achieve this and only admits it afterward.

Obviously as a part of the setting Darius is a commentary on real-life events in which governments have done deals with criminals and ruthless dictators to achieve their national interests. Generally lying to and manipulating the public. In this case, the player. Our meeting with Darius gives an invested player a new and perhaps troubling view of the Alliance, of Admiral Hackett, and even of Shepard's persona and role in the universe.

Another interesting comparison is to Helena Blake, also from ME1. When we meet her she is upfront about being a high ranking member in a criminal organization. However her two partners are in a gang war and she wants to take over. To get Shepard to take the bait she points out that they are drug dealers who sell indebted clients to slavers. She says that if Shepard gets rid of them she will take over the gang and keep them in low-level victim-less crimes illicit gambling. She honors this in the end but you have the option to try and arrest her anyway, kill her, or convince her to disband the gang.

Also why do people insist that the quarians are in their suits absolutely forever and never take them off? In the second book, and logic would suggest, even necessitate it, it is said that quarians do remove their suits for showers and things. There is really no reason quarians could take off their suits once a week (or month) and give themselves a wash down. Trim any hair.

Body hair is possible and so is hair on the head. What is not really believable is that Tali would have long hair. If quarians grow hair then they'd probably keep their heads shaved.

So like with Darius, in interacting with Helena and understanding her place in the galaxy as well as ours we see that galaxy in a new way and ourselves in a new way. Her character and storyline have a point. I don't see this with Aria though. In ME2 she is introduced and she just... is there. She doesn't do anything and we have no meaningful interaction with her. We are told that she is powerful and important but we don't see it.

Come ME3, other than the fact that Cerberus is a hostile enemy to the galaxy at this point, why are we helping Aria to take back Omega? What does it MEAN to help her? Helping her maintain control or gain control in ME2 might have been interesting if we were shown how her ruling Omega vs the competing gangs was worse or better, or at least more useful to us. We'd have to judge whether Shepard's own power and influence was being used and thus question how real power and influence in the real world should or could be used.

Is a ruthless criminal mastermind who keeps the trains running on time better than anarchy? Better for whom? For how long?

Is she worse than Darius, Blake, Fist, or the Illusive Man? Is she better? Beyond the fact that she isn't working with the Reapers, is she a better or worse person than those characters? TIM has convictions and motives you can understand even if you don't like them. He believes himself at least to serve a higher purpose.

What does Aria believe? What's she about?

Concept art is of limited value here. The concept art is just concept, what we finally get in the game is what matters. The picture we see shows hair on the head, so it means they can grow hair. Beyond that the resolution is not enough to know if they have body hair or not.

I'd wager that they do and that other races might as well. Hair is a versatile thing and serves many biological purposes.

Also, for the record, batarians are actually covered in fur. It is very fine and short, but it is there. The first book mentions it.

Ultimately, I don't mind the canon Tali as a concept. All the other alien races are bald, so one other species with something like human-like hair is fine. It is visually appealing, though I personally might have tweaked the design a little bit more to make it at least a little less human.

My last ME1 playthrough I picked up Liara last. Somehow, despite initiating a romance with Kaidan, it kicked me to Liara right before Virmire. Even though I only talked to her once, and was mean to her.

I didn't mind too much that time, since my plan was to dump whoever I romanced in 1 and gun for Garrus in 2 and 3. Still, it was annoying that the story I'd built up with Kaidan was suddenly derailed for a character I'd barely spoken to.

It's definitely bugged.

The thing with the characters in the first game, is that even if they feel like walking codexes at times, they're still written realistically.
They have a purpose in the overall universe, and they feel like they're written like people, not just characters.

The character in Mass Effect 2 and 3 are written to take the player by storm and impress them by simply being on screen. It's like what the Seamus guy wrote.

This scene is as dumb as Shepard going overly emotional because of the dead kid, which is completely out of character and forced upon you without a choice. you leave earth behind and it doesn't look like Shepard cares that much about it, you can genocide the geth, quarians and rachni and condemn the krogan to a slow death without batting an eye, but Shepard gets angry, emotional and almost cries because of Thessia?

But he's a super commando with literal psychic powers, 15 years of military experience and training, a high ranking officer post in both the Alliance and an exclusive paramilitary organization, and a body count in the hundreds. He even saved the Citadel from a BT bioweapon attack before he met Shepard. He's one of the most "special" squadmates. He just happens to be boring.

Garrus or Tali or Ashley would be more like Batman. They don't have any superhuman attributes or psychic powers or extremely prestigious backgrounds, but keep up with (or regularly slaughter) the people who do with their wits, training, and gadgets. And guns.

Ashley, Tali, and Garrus all have some military training, their own talents, and lots of potential, but unlike most of the squad they don't have superpowers of any kind, and by the time you meet them they're largely untapped potential working in dead ends. Garrus was among the top 1% of turian recruits, but he still just served his normal conscript term and then became a cop. Tali is a technical genius with at least some above average martial training, but relatively young and naive and just left the Fleet. Ashley is stated to have exemplary marks but is still just a grunt in a backwater garrison when we find her. Even when they become more or less legendary in-universe later, their backgrounds and abilities aren't super special on their own, and they get by against supposedly superior foes through wits and experience more than anything.

Jacob on the other hand is introduced as an accomplished one-man army with a long and distinguished career as an Alliance officer, Corsair, and Cerberus operative. Also he can throw up forcefields and toss soldiers around with his mind.

So, after making a more than decent plot into "Dragon Age" they ended up making an empty single player MMO with that shit that was Dragon Age Inquisition, so who has the same fear, as I do, that Andromeda will be (after the great franchise that was the ME Trilogy) a fucking sandbox free roam with no plot, in which you just roam around, scan shit, make some repeatable quests (like "close the portals" in Inquisition) with simply some cutscene sometimes when you reach a story point? I am 99% sure of it.

You can basically do an open world in 2 ways, the Bethesda way, in which you explore every location because every location is hand made, they put charme in it, story to unfold, characters, and you want to explore because it's intriguing, and because you can actually find "something", or you can do the Ubisoft way, in which every fucking place is the same, repeated (Assassins Creed).

EA is far more Ubisoft than Bethesda, as Inquisition showed.

Just my honest opinion, I don't want to be "right", but these are my expectations.

Honestly one of my better sandbox experience was with MGSV. I don't find Bethesda's sandbox very appealing because even if every location is handmade there's no real "incentive" to explore them other than the sake of exploring them. I never managed to finish a single elder scrolls game because I just get bored of exploring caves and catacombs all day while having no control over the quests and having no stake in the world's story. It's basically just roam around, pick up shit, and make some quets like "go to the end of the tunnel and loop around" with some story bits when you reach a certain point.

For convenience sake I'll call withcer 3 and gothic 2 and the lke "open-world rpgs", because I don't think sandbox is the right term.
I think that open-world rpgs often suffers from having too much stuff to do in them. With MGSV, one of my favorite wide open experience was with Dragon's Dogma. There's something I like about empty space that you need to travel through, where there not 3 sidequests to do for each 200m you do.
Don't know why, but I quite like open-worlds where there's part of the world that have nothing in it, like some part of Dragon's Dogma map or MGSV, while I find Fallout and Skyrim's open-worldness distracting and taxing.

Static collectibles are the bane of my existence.
DD is a gem of open-world making.
I think we can agree on the fact that open-world games are fucking hard to make because of that specific balance in the spacing between "stuff to do" and the road towards that stuff to do. I didn't played DA:I yet and didn't got very far in Kingdoms of Alamur so I cannot really compare.

I don't have specific expectations for ME:A open-worldness. I just hope that the planet you can explore will be more lively than the one in ME1. Though I quite like the precious little moment of finding the space cows and the weird alien song thingy you can hear on specific locations of some planet.

In my head, I use Sandbox games for GTA or Saints Rows type of game : it's open world and there is plenty of activity that have different "rules" from the "normal game time" : you can play bowling / do side activities. It's up to you how to spend your time in that wide-open world and there are often tools to help you create your own stuff (clothing stuff / customizable stuff.) I'd put construction game like space engineer / terraria and the like in that too because the focus is on playing around with what the game can offer : make your own stuff out of the game's stuff.

Open-world is more global, more "big pictures" : Dragon's Dogma is Open world, MGSV is open world because you can actually roam and explore the landscape as you see fit, though they isn't necessarily activities or stuff to create, you can manage your time on your own on the road between quests or stuff to do to advance the game. Sandbox is a "little picture" inside the Open-world "big pictures", at least in my eyes.

Furi was bretty good. It made me care about the boss fights enough to actually growl and talk to my screen. I like the open interpretation and the story telling in the game and I'm a sucker for synthwave music. Only one or two boss out of the 9 or so really frustrated me.

I like how it's trial and error but you can recover from your mistake (you have life / you can recover life by parrying). Feels like the difficulty is high but fair (except for some glitch that made a boss one-shot)

I liked the walk between bosses. You can just push "A" and make your character auto-walk. It basically serves as a cutscene to let you winding down, like eating ginger between two sushi to "reset" your taste bud.

I dunno, I like the game, I may not be the best to give an objective review. It played well, I liked the story, it made me talk to my screen in frustration and I feel like having a big dick after killing the bosses. I don't need much to be happy.

I always liked the very hard edge of Javik personality. I feel like the ending where he kills himself on the grave of his companion is too melodramatic and kind of a waste of his character. Liara book and probable blue children makes Javik mellow out and become softer.

Javik as king lets him keeps that hard imperial core that I like with him. Something like that.

Sometimes I think the human squaddies would have been more interesting if the writers started writing them as aliens, then changed them a bit to make them human.
Like a hypothetical chick who grew up on a starship, the daughter of one of the higher ups and has to wear a suit because of her frail bone structure due to the weak gravity on the ship.

I feel the interesting roles are given to aliens, and how human society evolved isn't explored.
