>>164672729

>>164673164
I try to follow guides on how to maximize my research and build order the best I can, and I try to play carefully with making sure the squad is always in high cover or hunkering down in dire scenarios. I also try to get the squad proper armor and weapons before starting the story missions proper. But after a while, usually a bit after mutons are introduced, the squads usually end up wiped out.
>>164669964
I hope they classify Berserkers as regular units instead of Terror units so they appear more often and have Chryssalids show up sooner, both of them felt like they got the shaft in X2.
>>164673385
I agree. Lids are troublesome though, having them show up too early could be pretty devastating.
I love this suit.
>>164673382
Then I see no reason, really. I play without research optimized route right now and I dont got wiped yet (Im at mid-June or something, right after first Chryssalids mission).
Maybe try this one - start a mission where you start to get wiped, save at the start and then repeat encounters few times, always trying different approach and solution. Maybe try to save before squad selection and try different setups as well.
Maybe then you will find out, what you do wrong.
>>164673638
I'm thinking they'll fit fine in the midgame, on all my playthroughs it just feels like they come a little too late to feel threatening, and I usually wrap up the campaign not long after so they're not around for long.

More of a wish really, I want enough of a proper re-balance in just about every aspect of the game to fix the core issues.
I'm really cautious of this because I'm not too sure that the same lightning full of bullshit that was oddly of the best experiences I've ever had can strike twice. So far every mod that I've played did its own thing, and it did it well, but the underlying problems that made the whole thing an alpha strike simulator always stayed. They can add it whatever they desire, but if the core of the game remains slaughtering everything the turn you see it, immobilizing them so you can do it next turn, or eating huge shit if you can't do one of the two, then it's junk
>>164684235
>Remember when we announced that first game was just a simulation?
>The second game was simulation as well, designed to harden Commander against what will awaits ahead of him and humanity!
>Because in real world, while you were training after winning against invasion, humanity invasion fleet reached Lmaos home planet and prepare for subtle infiltration!
Just in case, if Firaxis would decide to use that idea, please mention /xcg/ and that humble anon, kay?
>>164669964
I really have a stupid wish about a full port of EW on XCOM 2 engine, but that's really unlikely. I just dislike the way core gameplay of XCOM 2 works, where everything must die in one turn like the guy above mentioned.

At its core Long War was just EW taken to a logical (and illogical) extreme in every aspect.

>>164685776
Turning down numbers wouldn't do much. Alpha striking is required because of the timers, and the number of cover destruction / general disruption / death abilities the Aliens have.
If you turn down the timers, having half your squad panicked or dead because a MEC naded your rooftop position would be slightly less disastrous, but doesn't change the fact that the MEC can do a lot of damage without a lot of setup / warning.
Same goes for Stun Lancers, Codex rifts, Viper pulls, and the very existence of Andromedons.
The "firefights" you saw in LW were because almost every alien did the same thing: lob plasma. Sure, there would be stat variances that changed how they *approached* lobbing Plasma, but you had to really fuck up to be victim to any of the weirder abilities (Sectopod Barrage, Death Blossom, etc).
In XCOM 2, pretty much every Alien has something that they can call up to fuck you hard, and you have a harder time avoiding those abilities.
The best fix to this would be to emulate what the Additional Mission Type mod does, and make buffed ADVENT the majority of the forces you encounter, and make Aliens a lot more rare. You still get the interesting mechanics the aliens bring to the field, while still making the longer-term firefights feasible.
>>164687121
Fuck off, you fight Advent too much as is
>>164687384
>>164687121
He's not wrong though. Maybe strip down the ayys abilities and re-implement the leader/boss units from LW and have them be the ones with the instant always hits guaranteed to do damage abilities.
>>164687545

>>164687686
>ever having an enemy top the priority list to focus is inherently bad
It's not so black and white, it would come down to the execution, the idea isn't inherently flawed.
>>164687889
>if an enemy does anything more than move and shoot it needs to be very rare
make it easier to deal with losing soldiers and even missions instead, LW1 already did that. it's better than neutering everything down to people take 45% shots at each other until somebody hits for entire missions
>>164686854It was made by slavs and many characters are like stereotypical memes about various nations from their point of view. Wish their character sheets with bios were uploaded somewhere, but I can't find one.Panzerkleins were damn wonky, I agree, but heavy grenades were usually enough to kill or cripple them, also, god-tier Beretta SMGs were able to penetrate them (don't ask why). Luckily they were late game stuff and were like 10-20% of a game.
>>164688283
BERETTA MOD IN XCOM 2 WHEN
>>164688127
>if an enemy does anything more than move and shoot it needs to be very rare
You'll notice I said instant always hit guaranteed damage abilities. Nades aren't included due to limited range. This would be targeted at MECs (specifically advanced mecs) and Andromedons mostly. Could also be fun to include some powered up versions of other ayys for the leaders. Maybe make the Codex AOE a bit smaller
>>164687686
Except the "cut through hordes of mooks until you get slapped upside head by the commander" has been the approach pretty much every XCOM game has taken.
Long War brought it to an extreme that generally worked. Floaters and Mutons generally served as hideous riflemen, but the stronger aliens made things interesting.
>>164688127
Adjusting how the game handles death / mission failure would only solve a symptom of the Alpha strike problem rather than fixing it outright.
>>164688662
Except X-COM made up for that by adding in loads of depth and options on the tactical and strategic layer that all forms of XCOM lack. LW bandaged it but it was still the same game at the core. 2 added in some nice QoL features and fundamentally better features like destructability and random maps (even if their implementation is fucked) but it made XCOM and the aliens too powerful. Going back strictly to LW would be a step back to EU design
>>164689043
>going back to EU would be a stepback
But would it? I mean, we don't have to go all the way back, but I'm just saying X1 undeniably does some stuff better. I don't see how bringing that to X2 would be "a step back."
Would adding features from x-com be a step back?
>>164689267
It's a step back in design, specifically the enemies. I don't think it's a positive most enemies in EU/EW/LW were all very similar. 2 swings too much in the other direction, especially with the vanilla AI where Sectoids are usually jokes compared to troopers purely because the latter shoots more often, but I'd rather find a medium in between, not swing completely back to EU. EU doesn't have the problem because it avoided it entirely, it's not a good fix
>Would adding features from x-com be a step back?
Most features from X-COM would be adding complexity and depth to the game.
>really enjoy the early game of standard armor and weapons vs basic advent squads
>it lasts for such a disappointingly short time before it is plasma rifles and super explosions wiping sectopods and andromedons squads in 1 turn

>>164689648
feel like I never see anyone mention here one of the most glaring balance issues is that you can rush magnetic weapons incredibly fast even compared to lasers in EW (not even bringing up LW). it allows you to start snowballing by april/may. lump's probably going to gate that off behind a bunch of prereq techs
>>164687889
>on other generals where they are discussing how their modders have slowly lost their minds
rip shiv
>>164689043
Correct me if I'm being retarded, but my playing of X-COM still forced me to focus down the aliens unfortunate enough to enter LoS or suffer withering fire from every side of the map from aliens you cannot yet see.
That danger was offset by the fact you had a lot more tools to work with, and the life of a single soldier carried a lot less weight than it does in the new games.
With regards to unit variety, the Terror units were an excellent departure, but the standard aliens didn't really have any distinct abilities until you encountered the Commander with Psionic abilities or the Blaster Launcher.
>>164689634
>2 swings too much in the other direction
>but I'd rather find a medium in between
Ok so we basically agree then. Scale down some of the ayys abilities or limit them so they aren't so pervasive.
> you can rush magnetic weapons incredibly fast even compared to lasers in EW
Is it really faster? I thought it was pretty much the same. On legendary it certainly forces you too spend more time on ballistics.

Your not wrong. I think part of X2's issue is that you can't even do simple things like run away from engagements or break off contact, or just sit tight.
>unlocking warden armor
>>164690048
>you can't even do simple things like run away from engagements or break off contact, or just sit tight
I hate that. Probably the one I absolutely hate the most is that aliens simply don't respect anything you have, resulting in overwatch and Suppression being absolutely useless in having aliens stay put. What's the purpose of it all if the alien run through overwatch and Suppression all the time anyway, sometimes not to even secure a flank, escape a flank, or get a better angle, but to just move one tile to the right?
When does "dark events" expire? Or some dont expire at all?
I gave up on preventing the one making sneaking in initial ambush mode harder to block another one, but now I wonder if I have to endure this effect for the rest of campaign.

That said, it turns out money can keep people doing something they don't enjoy long past the point when they would have stopped. I'm living proof of that.
I really wish there could be a way to train low ranks by more experienced crew in X2. In the end, I always keep running with same squad, +- 1 or two guys, simply because enemies gets too dangerous to run with low rank guys.
Or it would require not going optimal simply to give them kills, but out of remaning enemies, Im happy when I find muton, currently the weakest guys.
>>164692148
>I'm living proof of that.
Well don't leave us hanging, what do you do anon?
Just finished my first base defense mission on modded commander, I was dreading it but that was easy as fuck. Most of the aliens basically just bee-lined it to to the avenger so I gunned them down then flanked the jammer thing with a small team who sniped it without pulling a berzerker pod near it.

Also, how much shit I am if, when checking total turn numbers after missions, I would nearly always run out of time in missions with timers, if I didnt turn on "True Conc" mod AND add 1-2 to each timer counter?
I ask because every time somebody says that timers suck on Steam discussion board, people basically say "git gud, timers are balanced".
>>164692754
come back in a week or two.
They're really going to draw this one out since it's probably going to be the first proper total overhaul of the strategic and tactical layers.all things considered XCOM 2's mod scene has been pretty god tier, even without Firaxis commissions
>>164692879
must have missed that.
thats great. this is gonna be so fucking great. i havent touched xcom lately beyond trying out that coop mod.
>>164692972
You're pretty shit. I can see cutting it close every now and then, especially if it's a relay mission, but if you consistently cannot finish the objective in eight turns you're not playing well.
Default timers are more than enough unless you get very, very, very unlucky with objective / alien placement.
>>164692972
It doesn't really mean anything. Under vanilla timers I almost run out of time. You almost run out of time, even though you have more turns. Why? Because we are both playing to the rules, and trying to squeeze the best chance of victory under those rules, which means taking as many turns as you can get away with.
>>164693334
This, if you were playing with default timers and regularly failing missions due to time then it would mean something.
>>164693265
8 turns is pretty large, Im talking about all those 5-6 turns timers.
I got mad about default timers, to be honest, because I dont like being forced into rushing, when the most logical approach would be scouting first and preparing combat ground. Especially with all those "fuck you" buttons aliens have.
For example, when facing "kill/capture VIP" or "resquie and escort VIP", if I would play without mentioned mod halting timers, I would have like 4-5 turns to clear the path when I reach the position. And just rushing would mean VIP death, because alien backup spawns always on rescue zone.
>>164692243
Spoilering for off topic blogpost:I'm a software engineer making a ludicrous amount of money working for a company I hate, with people I hate interacting with, on projects that always seem to change requirements midway through and/or never get used. Work makes me nothing but sad or angry. I tried quitting once, when I said I was moving away from the city I started in, but they said, "It's ok, you can work remotely." So now I really can't quit, because there's no way I'd make even half as much as I'm currently making where I live now. And my boss told me today that they want to promote me to managing people (that I'll probably hate). Ugh.

>>164708976
that right there is a dependant cosmetic mod, one of the few. You need to have the halo techsuits mod for those to work. Then if memory serves, you apply the techsuit and the armour goes over the top. Hope this helps.
>>164708976
i believe the halo armor mod has an empty legs and arms option because its meant to use the torso for everything
so when the game generates a new recruit it picks randomly from all the possible options and sometimes it might pick those

So, Long War 2.
What might we say is the core of Long War? What should we expect? A longer campaign, certainly. More equipment tiers? Balance changes across the board? Personally, I'm hoping for added depth to the strategy layer, base building, and geoscape.

Well, they could just add new content, dial up the diffculty a bit and consolidate the whole thing with their previous X2 mods. XCOM 2 was one of the only sequels this year that wasn't either completely bland (Dishonored 2) or decided to shoot itself in the foot because reasons (DX:HR)
That said, it has a number of features that are departures from EU/EW and are incredibly divisive and lend themselves to discussion.

Hopefully the next DX game does not have the ME3 problem.
>>164727770
I'd hate to be whoever did the level design for Prague. There was some god tier level design and exploration that was buried under mountains of shit writing, a godawful copout of a story, and gameplay that didn't really go anywhere from HR.

>>164709974
LW's most important change was that you DIDN'T have to kill everything in one turn. It was a big breath of fresh air going from vanilla I/I to LW.
I/I was just breaking los until you can grenade the pod to death. LW gives you tools to survive living aliens in the early game, from suppression through flash/smokes though alloy plates and cover DR that let your soldiers reliably survive a hit.
I'm surprised you say it was the same in LW since to me that was the biggest change from EU to LW, turning the engagements into actual firefights.
>>164669964
It all hinges on the strategy layer. If they manage to revive the airgame, or replace it with something filling a similar role, LW2 will probably be even better than LW1. If LW2 stays a purely tactical layer game like X2, it will most likely be inferior to LW1.

Two questions, /xcg/, if I may ask:
1) How hard it is to mod new weapon types? Lets say I would like to add fully melee class, wtih sword as primary and shield as secondary weapon. Would that be possible?
2) Can I "force" game to give me a Chance to recruit certain characters from pool? I made rather long list of characters named after my guild members, but Im few missions after Sectopods introduction already and still cant get certain ones - on recruitment screen, game still gives me random guys, while I selected "pool only" in options.

I dont like how ayy lmaos got buffed, I feel nervous when going on missions, but in the end, nobody died yet and I keep playing, with 3rd day so far, where I end up at 2am. Controlling Sectopods in mission is fun.
But even with those buffs on aliens side, I can still deliver firepower enough to kill said Sectopod without planning with three people, but probably could with just two (Grenedier + Sniper with bluescreen rounds is proably all I need).
>>164753908
>I feel nervous when going on missions
You say that like it's a bad thing.
>>164753009
>>164753707
In summa summarum, I feel like X2 has one brilliant edge. The moddability. Yes, I know, "mods will fix it" is an apologist phrase and not really a credit to the game itself, but the truth is that if you don't like what XCOM 2 is, you can turn it into what you want it to be. Turn timers not to your liking? Remove them and add more challenge in some other way. Don't like having to kill aliens immediately? Buff the cover values and use an AI mod that makes them more defensive. Etc etc etc.
>>164754794
Should be. But I keep playing.
Why?
I know it's not an X-Com game, but are posts about Xenonauts welcome as well? It's basically an upgraded re-release of the original X-Com.
>>164755358
yes
>>164752421
>1) How hard it is to mod new weapon types? Lets say I would like to add fully melee class, wtih sword as primary and shield as secondary weapon. Would that be possible?
From the code perspective, relatively easy. Your problem here is that we don't have the animations necessary for such a class, so you would have to make your own. Animating is hard and there's no animators in the community, except for the guy who made the sassy snake mod, but he died.
The only mods i know of with new animations are the LW laser pack and the mercenary weapons mod, and those animations are very simple. The only other guy who seems capable of animations is Stenchfury, but he hasn't even released the alien mod he has been working on where he has new animations.
No idea about your second question.
>>164754975
>Buff the cover values
That's an interesting idea.
>change high cover and low cover values with each other
>now the AI is good at the game
>>164755236
Because nervousness is an emotional response, which means you're invested in the game. Most games these days are "safe", you can't actually FAIL them. At worst, you reload a save file or respawn. XCOM allows you to fail and lose, sometimes spectacularly. You're going up against difficult odds, and it's thrilling.
>>164756214
>but he died
;_;7
Still, cant we reuse animations from alien classes? I mean, force soldiers models to use their animations? Attacking with melee weapon could borrow Stun Lancer thrust attack, for example. Covering behind shield would require custom, tho.
>>164756976
Yeah you can do that, but as an example of a problem, even Stun lancers have a rifle that they hold in their "idle" animation. So for starters, you would need a new animation where they hold a sword and a shield in each hand when they're just standing around, when they're in cover, when they walk, when they run, and so on and so forth.
>>164755490
Alright, in which case shall we talk about squad composition? The composition I currently use is the following:
>2x Assault (for flanking, breaking and entering UFO's etc.)
>1x Heavy Weapons (If you absolutely, positively need to kill a motherfucker)
>1x Sniper (to intervene from a long range wherever needed/possible)
>1x Medic (to keep everyone alive, armed with a pistol and a medkit)
>3x Riflemen (your regular, rank and file troops)
I'm more or less satisfied with this composition, but have three small problems with it:
>The Heavy Weapons guy is useless unless he's already in a good firing position without having to move
>The medic is useless in combat (though perhaps this isn't a problem at all, he's the medic so he should be kept alive at all costs)
>No reliable means to capture enemies alive
A possible solution I've considered is to scrap both the Heavy Weapons guy and the medic for a grenadier (1 pistol with some ammo, 1 medkit, multiple grenades) who can both heal and use grenades to take out enemies (lethally or otherwise), and have a pistol in case of emergencies. The problem is that this might result in my Grenadiers and Assaults ending up with overlapping roles (clearing rooms before the rest moves in). So is this a good idea or would you suggest something else?
There's also another little issue that's more tedium than a real problem: it takes a long time to explore the map and figure out where the UFO is landed/crashed (especially on larger maps), but I feel having dedicated scouts to solve that problem would increase the overall combat effectiveness of my squad.
Thoughts?
>>164756774
Xenonauts player, but I agree (especially on Ironman). In the first few missions you WILL get your shit pushed in. As your weapons and armor upgrade missions become a lot safer, but there's always the risk of the one asskicker carrying your team being taken out by a sneaky alien you haven't spotted in time, greatly reducing your chances of winning.
>>164757187
From what little I played of xenonauts, there wasn't much need for specialized medics because almost every rifleman, shield and assault had the space for a personal medkit. I guess you unlock more stuff to lug around later on?
>>164732632
I couldn't; don't know jack about modeling.

>>164760034
Your friend is a complete fucking retard.
No seriously, this article is a fucking trainwreck.
>falls for the "program costs 1.5 Trillion now" fallacy that two seconds on google could disprove
>brings up problems during development that aren't even an issue in the most recent block
>shows a horrendous lack of understanding about how fighter programs actually fucking work
>throws in a shitload of jargon to mislead people
>refuses to acknowledge testimony from people who actually fly the fucking plane
>blowing anecdotes and minor issues the fuck out of proportion in absence of actual severe issues with the F-35
Seriously, almost every claim your friend makes disagrees directly with reality.
>>164763016
Same. Maybe not for every mission, but then not every mission has them.
>>164763892
Oh sure. If the first ADVENT Blacksite had a turn limit it would be absolutely awful but on most missions I enjoy the intensity and need to act quickly it adds.
Some people claim that every soldier gets AWC special skill, but it didnt happen with my team specialist. She reached max rank and didnt got her skill.
A bug or it is supposed to go that way?
>Long War studio unironically added "Shinobi" as a new class
>>164764220
If you don't build an AWC early on enough, you can reach max rank without getting that extra perk.
The "true retroactive AWC" mod fixes that.
>>164764220
AWC rolls a rank when soldier's supposed to get the extra skill, if your soldier reached above beyond that rank already you don't get it. If you don't like this install recroactive AWC mod
>>164763617
>Seriously, almost every claim your friend makes disagrees directly with reality.
That's some solid evidence. I guess your right, there is nothing unusual about a 20 year fighter program that still hasn't produced a combat ready aircraft.
But you did read the article at least, so I appreciate it.
>>164764489
>>164764320
I will remember about that in next play. I dont think that installing mod now would help.
Honestly, I thought that building AWC first would be fast enough.
Will the Halo Battle Rifle be imported or am I just missing it?
>>164764732
Every objective metric places the F-35 far beyond anything we're currently fielding.
I find it convenient that the article stayed away from any hard data, credible comparisons with other fighters, or any sort of perspective from the "Pro F-35" side. All of those are big Journalistic no-nos.
So lets look at some of the more easily accessed facts:
>Better range than the F-16 and F-15 with Pylon fuel tanks (while still maintaining a smaller RCS)
>Better payload capacity WITHOUT Pylons
>Phenomenal sensor suite that outstrips even the F-22
>lower operating costs than F-22
I could go on.
The long term costs of retiring 4-5 airframes in exchange for the F-35 will actually save money, so the "$1.5 TRILLION GUYZ" argument is misleading and false. Great journalistic integrity there.
The "it took 20 years to create a combat ready aircraft" is mostly a result of congressional interference and fuckery since the high / low system had the rug pulled out from under it when we shortchanged our F-22 fleet. That's not Lockmart's fault, and they're making a good product despite it.
Your friend is drawing an alarmist, bombastic conclusion from issues that existed during development, misinterpretations of the facts, and convenient omissions of what has actually gone on with the program.
And lets get to your friend's primary appeal: telling Trump to cancel the program. It's never going to happen, it *cannot* happen. The contracts are signed, the orders are placed, and the program is nearing completion. We're stuck with the F-35, and seeing as it's actually shaping up to be a damn good fighter with a long service life ahead of itself, that's not a disaster.
I will give credit where it's due, though. He didn't mention the gun not working, or even namedrop Pierre Sprey. That puts him a notch above most F-35 articles.

F-35A and F-35B have both reached IOC.
F-35C development is still ongoing, until at least August 2018. Since Carrier operations are not pleasant on any airframe, problems should be expected.
How this somehow means the entire program is rotten, should be thrown out, or is somehow inferior to legacy airframes is beyond me.
>>164768101
That looks pretty bad though, they at least could have tried harder
>>164766205
Yes, but it breaks off from the pattern of the other classes. The gunner has a big gun, the grenadier shoots grenades, the assault class assaults. I suppose the ranger (infantry) isn't entirely intuitive either, but Shinobi changes both the language and the thinking behind the name. I wouldn't like "ninja" or "knight" or "samurai" or "snake" either.

If you want to modify files, or use some mods, having your game installed in that directory can interfere. Some XCOM1 mods don't work if you have it installed in that directory.
>>164771449
Program Files location is usually under "special care" by Windows (for example by UAC) and that can interfere with many things, especially modifications and such. Thats why it is not recommended to use that folder for any games or similar.
Good for you that you didnt ran into a problem yet, but I know about several cases, where people couldnt run certain mod or apply certain fixes for games, because of said protection.

>Use the meld on what?
Mecs or gene mods
If you do autopsies on the ayys, it will sometimes give you a gene mod. You need the gene lab, and the gene lab starts with two pretty good and cheap upgrades for your soldiers eyes and a nice leg mod. The upgrades are tied to the soldier though, so try not to get them killed too often.
You can only give a soldier one gene mod for a given body part (no double eye upgrade, no double leg upgrade etc) but you can switch it if you want. No refunds though.
Mec suits are expensive, but you don't lose them if the soldier dies (unless you squadwipe, then you lose all equipment including the mec suit...I think). You also have to chop off the soldiers limbs to fit in the suit, which costs a small amount of meld and will turn them into a new class with new perks. You can upgrade the suit once you finish certain research and spend even more meld and cash on it.
>>164798743

If too many countries panic and leave the council, it's game over. Difficulty is just how many aliens are there, it doesn't mean you can't win them, or that there are even tougher aliens there. Alien progression is purely based how much time has passed for the most part.
>>164801895

Unless it's an early bomb defusal. Fuck those.
The rewards are usually too good to pass up. $200+2 scientists+2 engineers is almost 3 abductions worth of rewards. Also the mission you passed up was a dlc mission that would have given you a free heavy lieutenant (captain maybe, I forget). So almost 4 abduction rewards. That mission isn't too hard, but the ones that follow are pretty brutal: a timed mission with mutons followed by a battleship assault with no time to recover from the previous mission.
Terror mission should be before the end of the month, have fun~

They're not that bad, just overwatch if you're really worried. They do 2 damage every turn of strangling, so if you overwatch kill them they do literally nothing, and if you don't you can usually kill them the next turn. Worst case they decide to shoot instead and crit for 5ish damage. Or they strangle a squad sight sniper who's half a mile away. Don't let that happen.
But yeah, they are pretty spooky.

Just sit her as far away as possible. Not much to it. It needs line of sight, but as long as you have that it's ayy hunting season. Snipers are the late game carry since they can oneshot most ayys from across the map and have +90% on every shot. Explosives will carry you through the early game though. It was said before but I want to repeat it, nanofiber vest is useless. Use grenades instead to destroy cover and soften them up.

>>164828531
Out of curiosity, what difficulty are you playing on?
>>164828531
Use high cover. It's twice as effective as low cover so going for low cover is just asking for it.
Grenades have a 100% hit chance and destroy cover, making it easier for other soldiers to hit the target.

>>164828991
>he doesn't know what low cover and high cover is
Oh boy, I think you might need a basic XCOM course. Its the cover with the full shield instead of the half shield. It give more defense.
>>164828991
Alright senpai. Notice how some cover gives you half a shield and some gives you a full shield? former is half cover and it provides less defense than full cover. If possible use full cover unless you're going for some crazy flanking move.

This is so dull, I don't understand the appeal of playing or watching curbstomp campaigns, there's no tension or excitement. I feel like some people that think the game's too hard are the type to savescum or immediately ditch a campaign if they lose one or two soldiers and just want their perfect lucky run.
>>164831078

>Not being good enough at video games to not lose people
Unless hes never had any gravely wounded ever, its perfectly possible. My current playthrough has been deathless but I've had to go through a good few cycles of Gravely Wounded from A-Team's getting hurt once in blue-moon then the noobies that have to substitute for them nearly dying on their first missions.
>>164829750
Satellites. Satellites is almost always the answer. They give more money and reduce panic. They also have a chance to spot ufos that you can shoot down for a chance to get bonus resources. Needs interceptors though, but the sats will pay for those.
Mostly though just don't skip abduction missions and you'll be fine in normal difficulty.
>>164831078

>>164830107
What happened to your terror mission? It should have popped up in April. Did you skip that too?
LONG
WAR
2
WHEN
?
My first time playing long war this week on normal, but I knew that if I had a harvester ufo land on the first 8 missions of the campaign you should ignore it. But I tried it out with 3 squaddies and 3 lance corporals and made it to like 31 aliens killed. But that last outsider pod killed me.
Why is the whole mission easy, but the last pod of like 8 outsiders fuckd you up? The difficulty is so misleading on that mission. I thought there would be like 3-4 of them.
Oh well, Im doing well anyway even after that, still 31 aliens dead on my first try is pretty good right?

>>164829750
The issue with armor in vanilla is that your soldiers are too fragile from the get-go. So even when you add the basic armor they are still vulnerable to OHK and incapable of tanking.
>>164836263
The normal pods on that mission get twice as hard when you gear your team toward being able to kill the outsiders. Plus I wouldn't say the rest of it is easy either, you must be pretty good at pulling/setting up engagements if you had no issues.

I almost felt bad for Julian and how Lily messed with his programming.

What the fuck? I just killed it.
Do you have to hack the Julianpod or something?
Whats the deal with the "joke" about guy callen Van Doorn and Bradford decided that they dont need a guy like that?
>>164874741
Rockets are a good solution to smoke the drones and soften up the disc
>>164875583
Van Doorn was a VIP from EU/EW that became a fan favorite because of his quips and role in Long War.
He kind of had a few screws loose.
>>164874767
anime is garbage
>>164875547
No, just Lily mention during one of the visits to workshop, that she actually discovered that Julian stored backup of himself on her personal Gremlin. She then claims that Julian could be nice "pilot" for future build SPARKs.
But that dialogue from Julian side, on the video I linked, clearly shows that while she indeed used his backup for Xcom made SPARK unit, she also made sure he wont go on rampage again, likely by hardcoding him with absolute loyality to Xcom and most importantly, herself. T his horror of course, but who cares?
>>164875728
I only have a sniper with no grenades left
>>164875547
nah its a voice option for sparks
shen got a copy of julian fromher hacked gremil, butchered his higher thinking andmadeitan option for sparks
Speaking about SPARKs, are they actually useful?
I mean, in EW, MECs were really nice additions to the team, both tanky and deadly. But recently I ran into opinion that SPARKs are mediocre at everything and just "suck" experience from better units.
Would that be true?
>>164875894
That's horrible and hilarious.

They're kinda poor offensively, but they find a niche as a permanent mimic beacon and mobile high cover. Personally I'd rather have another grenadier.

Tsundere is a meme.

Kinda sad, since MECs really shined at EW.

Don't skip abduction missions next time.
Abduction missions = sciguys or engis or shekels = quicker/cheaper/more equipment respectively
Also satellites are pretty good.

They should just do all their operations during nights to have permanent invisibility.
>>164880076
Interesting. I've never gotten to that point so I guess I learned something today. But if you don't have soldiers you can't go on missions, and if you can't go on missions everyone will panic and end the game pretty quick.
Hey /xcg/ i got a problem, im stuck on a mission with the archon king, everytime I kill him my game crashes. And I cant force him to run away because he fucks up my team if i dont kill him. Im playing on xbox and cant find a solution anywhere. Anyone have any idea on how to fix it or what i can do to protect my team?
Still in march. Should I recruit some more rookies?
>>164881154
how do you have so many leveled at the same time
>>164881416
Guerilla Tactics School m8. Its one of the if not the first facility you should build.
I bet the base is in russia
>>164881534

Technically the cannon ending no?
>>164881938
oh
This looks somewhat familiar, right?
>>164881880
No. Whats inferred to have happened is the XCOM project gets bum-fucked at HQ when thebig mothershiparrives and Earth surrenders, you're also kidnapped. The bald council member is the only one that doesn't surrender in XCOM 2's story and goes into hiding alongside whats left of the XCOM Project.
>>164875879

>>164882528
I was under the impression that the Spokesman just went undercover within ADVENT, seeing as he has access to a fair deal of their network.
>>164882649
Antarctica mod base when?
>>164882693
No, he just has his own network of discreet contacts. The friendly VIPs you usually pick up in his missions are probably part of his contact network.
>>164882206
There just really isn't a canon ending for X1 period.
>>164882693
>>164882848
The councilman is a mole in ADVENT, that's a fact. That's why all his intel is so good and he knows info that only the very highest ranking members of ADVENT could possibly know.
I'm thinking Asia for my base. Unless the Air and Space buff applies to Satellites
>>164881880
I'm pretty sure when you first meet that bald guy in XCOM 2, he states all other council members betrayed humanity except for him. The ending you posted is like the exactly opposite of that
>>164882206
This >>164882528 is what happens, any subsequent playthroughs or anything that happens after that point in the campaign is a simulation.
>>164883310
It doesn't, but don't discount Africa for that sweet welfare money, or South America.
Seriously, South America's bonus saves a shitload of time and confers some pretty strong items.
why did the ayys come to earth in the first place?
>>164882649
NA is good mid to late game, SA is decent early game depending on your strategy, Africa is greedy but still really good, Asia is good for early/mid game. EU is iffy because I usually never get labs and only one or two workshops.
>>164883335
>any subsequent playthroughs or anything that happens after that point in the campaign is a simulation.
Wrong. XCOM 2 canon and XCOM 1 canon are entirely separate.
>>164883447
Space Cancer
>>164883310
Asia is the best, in my opinion. No, USA buff apply only to aircraft.
>>164883430
SA also has only two countries so getting full covarage is really easy though. Remember in vanilla you get your continent bonus when you start anyway, so SA is a bad choice imo
>>164883310
>Unless the Air and Space buff applies to Satellites
Jesus christ that would be way too good
>>164883447
If we're considering the Bureau to be canon (which based off references in EW, it is), the aliens first rolled around the 1960s.
Know that the entire continuity of the XCOM (and X-COM, which is an entirely different universe) series is disjointed as fuck since story has never really been the focus. For example, both endings to EU are technically not canon.
>>164883721
>both endings to EU are technically not canon.
they are canon
>>164882680
Actually, she was preparing to fire that pistol skill that targets everyone in sight - all shoots connected.
I actually thought that somebody will connect it with Starcraft ;_;
>>164883721
More than one ending?
Loss and victory?
I picked Asia as my base. Wish me luck.
>>164883447
Kinda heavy spoilersThe Elders are searching for a race that is both physically enduring and also have the capacity to be highly capable in psionics. Every Alien race you encounter are the failures of their search, re-purposed as military for use in the next invasion. The reason why they're searching for such a race is because they require a new vessel to transfer themselves into to escape the incurable disease that afflicts the Elders, slowly degrading them and making them incredibly weak physically.
>>164883840
And they also failed to ascend to a purely psionic/energy based lifeform, unlike some other ethereals, so they really need those bodies.
Also, bump limit reached, new thread when?
>>164883836
Yeah, loss and victory.
>>164883797
The victory ending of EU certainly isnt canon since XCOM 2 is happening.
The defeat ending technically isn't canon since XCOM 2 is based off a in-universe book rather than the actual ending.
The aliens force aHQ defenseearly, kidnap the commander, and force the planet to surrender since they skipped the "slowly ramp up" part of the invasion.
It's an autistic technicality, though.
>>164884237
But it is canon Anon becauseAll of EU is the simulation
>>164884464
I want this meme to die
>>164884237
>The victory ending of EU certainly isnt canon since XCOM 2 is happening.
Devs specifically stated X2 is an alternate universe. Therefore, XCOM 1 victory and defeat are canon, and the XCOM 2 universe has a completely different XCOM 1 canon.
>>164884464
>Retcon the entire game
Wow, it actually works. It's stupid but it works.
>>164884632
>>164884464
Except thats wrong because if it was all a simulation you wouldn't know Bradford, Vahlen, Shen, or anyone from the original base.
At most a portion of it is a simulation.
