Strike the earth!

m8, its alcohol, it doesnt exactly weaken them
it makes them stronger and braver, but they cant land a hit
Hmm, scratch that, its a fucking zombie-type death touch
I though these bastards were dying to an OD, but any of them who receives an injection dies inevitably at aprox 2000 phases
>>164603458
kinda unoriginal OP
>>164603663
>dwarven alcohol is strong
>strong enough to kill armies
Looks like bees are finally useful
How do I make a dwarf complete a hole going straight down? Whenever I try to make a dwarf channel straight down he quits after like 3 or 4 z level and climbs up.
>>164603871
I think its a bit too much anon
I mean, I know that now that I had the idea, people are gonna use it, but its too much for the world
Now I know how einstein felt about the atomic bomb
On a completely unrelated note
A stream of water pushed me to a pool of lava. Tried to drop water on top of mke but didnt work, so I run of to the river
As I jumped to the river, I died mid-air.
This has probably been the weirdest death I have ever gotten
Makes me wish a drawfag would draw it, actually
>>164604705
apparently, you should inject them alcohol, then they should be stupid enough to dig their own graveI dont actually know, its pretty weird, does it happen often?
>>164604705
You can't. Dwarfs will eventually get hungry, thirsty, or tired. At which point they'll abandon their task and search for food/drinks/beds.
>>164604705
Maybe build a locked hatch over him as soon as he's dug one tile down? Or maybe just a put a locked door between him and everything interesting.
>>164604705
The climbing mechanics make them do it to avoid danger. It has nothing to do with having other things to do.
>>164605796
They do it to get out of holes with no other way to get out. My miners do it all the fucking time when I try to dig wells and it's annoying as fuck since there's no way to ever get them back in that hole and no way to finish it from below.
I wish climbing was never added. It adds absolutely nothing to the game except frustration.
>>164606047
You should learn to adapt to the changing circumstances. Climbing is good because it makes it harder for players to hide from enemies (you can still just seal yourself off with drawbridges, but who the fuck does that).
Just dig a staircase, and then make the channel nex to it.
>>164606337
>(you can still just seal yourself off with drawbridges, but who the fuck does that).
heh
>>164606047
Dwarves are annoying pieces of shit and you have to deal with it.
>enable soundpack for shits and giggles
>load up a random 2 year old fort
>"Orik Cuntson has gone insane" in the middle of a packed tavern
>bombarded with ~100 sounds of punches and kicks as he is beaten to death in the middle of the dancefloor
>the bard throws out his corpse
who tf thought this was a good idea?
>>164604718
>I have become alcohol, the destroyer of worlds
But really, what are the stats of this race?
>>164606337
>Climbing is good because it makes it harder for players to hide from enemies
Not at all. It just means you have to actually put "effort" into building your wall instead of laying some trees on their side.
Rock block walls are almost impossible to climb, and all it takes is the slightest overhang to make your walls impenetrable again. Make your walls 3-4z levels high and enemies won't even try to climb them, even if they could.
Climbing adds nothing positive to the game.
Meanwhile, climbing has made it impossible to
>dig a hole straight down
>have any trees on the map without getting your dwarves air-stranded the second they see a buzzard
>cut down trees without getting your woodcutter and the only axe air-stranded because a kea existed somewhere nearby
>have multi-Z level rooms without getting dwarves air-stranded whenever they get in a brawl
>have surface structures without getting dwarves air-stranded when a kobold shows up
Nothing ever climbs anyway, except for your dwarves, and they never do it when it would actually be beneficial. They exclusively do it to get themselves stuck somewhere and starve to death unless you happen to get lucky and notice them before they die.
The worst part is that climbing isn't even completed. The AI only knows how to climb up or release hold. Climbing sideways or downwards is impossible, which is why the feature is so retarded and useless.
>>164607918
>Orik
>the bard throws out his corpse
>>164608429
I've had many dwarves save themselves after falling into water thanks to climbing.
Also, even from what you wrote, it's clear that building outdoor fortifications is more challenging now.

>>164608685
It's really not though. All it takes is a 1z level wall with floors built along the outside edge. Sure it a little more than doubles the material cost, but walls were already cheap as fuck anyway since 1 boulder=4 blocks. Just add a second mason and you'll have it done by spring Y2 easily, well before anything could possibly threaten you. Or at least anything that wall would help against.
Besides, what kind of loser only built 1z level high walls anyway? It makes your fort look like some shoddy village, not a dwarven fortress.

New blog post
>I'm having fun chasing down issues with agent identities and rumors and so forth. A lot of the conversation/reputation code wasn't able to cope with the change, and we've needed to differentiate more between visual identification or whether an incident just involves the real and fake historical identities of people in the abstract, especially when you ask a person their opinion about somebody but only know an alias (which you don't know is an alias). People now think more carefully about where their information came from when they decide what they think of people, and do some cross-referencing of known identities and so forth, but they also have to skip certain rumors in their heads that pertain to a person where they can't make the connection (because they don't know a given alias or true identity). So if you ask after a goblin agent using their true name or an identity used in a previous town, people in the current town the agent is infiltrating will properly say that they don't know who you are talking about, even if they have a lot of information about the agent under their current alias -- or they might have an opinion about the old identity if they heard a rumor about it. Where the game previously formed a single set of reputations for one historical figure, people can now give different answers for the true historical figure and each identity, as well as what they think on sight (which may or may not involve any names -- they keep track of which identities they associate with the physical appearance)... (cont.)
>>164623279
>...We're also trying to keep more identity information intact as rumors fade out over time, to stop covers from being blown by the passage of time, and we also want a bit more realism in terms of linking witnesses that know the physical appearance to somebody else in town that got to know a name/alias of the people and their appearance, but didn't see the incident. For example, if the player robs somebody without saying their name, a problem with the new system was that only the people that witnessed the event thought ill of the player even after a few days, since other townspeople could no longer make the link between the player and the event. However, if the player talks to enough people in a small enough town either before or after the robbery, then whatever name/alias they used should become linked to the incident after a bit of time (the normal rumor spread time). It's difficult to get it right, and it's not going to be quite up to the level where it'll need to be for the justice/crime features later on, but we're trying to keep everything pointed in the right direction. (end)
>>164623279
>>164623454
So after this is he going to work on kobolds or is there anything else left to do in the "Artifact quests and agents" section?
Forgive me if this is a common question, but what new feature would you like to see in Dwarf Fortress (be it planned by Toady or not)?
Personally I'd like to see light mechanics such as lighting torches in your tavern if you want humans to feel comfortable, and putting them out when it's time for the humans to die.

"
In D&D, mindless undead are capable of following simple tasks such as "Attack anyone who enters this room." or "Stay here until this alarm sounds, then attack the nearest village.".
Most of the commands they're capable of can be broken down into simple logical statements like 'If X, then Y.', such as the attacking one being "If something enters this room, attack them.".
Do you think that with enough undead, with the right commands, you could effectively create a computer?"

He'll need to get the stuff so you can actually order units to head out into the world and be informed of their progress/lack thereof, a lot of that is actually tied into the agents identities stuff though, just a matter of having it transfer into a form you can see in fort mode.

A combat rebalance, specifically aimed at wrestling and biting. Currently, things go like this
>The frail elf child bites the muscular giant in the left lower leg!
>The frail elf child shakes the muscular giant by the left lower leg, bruising the skin!
>A tendon in the lower leg has been torn and many nerves have been severed!
>The muscular giant falls over.(And is never able to use his left leg ever again)
This is fucking stupid. A successful bite turns into a save or die scenario. You're either able to break their grip and make their attack totally useless since biting sucks, or that limb is permanently destroyed since shaking is overpowered as fuck. No middle ground.
It's even worse with joint damage since now you get your spine snapped in half because an alligator bit your thumb toe.
Yeah, shaking something after biting it is how pretty much every large carnivore kills their prey in real life, and it's a death sentence if a wolf does it to a rabbit, and your arm is fucking gone if an alligator chomps down on it and starts rolling. But humans are not alligators. When you crush somebody's upper spine into bone meal, they can't leap up and bite your shoulder and then rip your fucking arm off. Especially not when that somebody is half your size and biting through steel plate.
Meanwhile in Dwarf Fortress, paralyzing a disarmed target actually makes them more dangerous since it makes them start biting, and everyone gets to be an alligator in Dwarf Fortress.
Also, somewhat related, but I'd very much like for there to be magical options to heal tendons, nerves, lost limbs and other injuries that cannot naturally heal. I don't know if healing magic is in the magic update, but I'm really hoping so.

Oh yes plenty. My personal favorite is to tell them to take a stroll through the garbage dump, and then designate some cinnabar boulders for dumping.
You could also try having them check the bottom of your well for cave crocodiles.
Or you could tell them to fist fight some cave crocodiles.
What is used to make these kind of stuff?
>>164631279
Kind of. They can break doors, but having two or three in sequence will be more than they can destroy before changing back, from my experience. Since you have so many, you might want to consider starting a seperate mini-fortress of nothing but werebeast dwarves. I think they won't attack each other, though I'm not sure.

bullshit.
first, distance to their lairs has nothing to do with the risks of having attacks. their attacks are fully randum, unlike the sieges.
second, if you've played the game for more than three months, you should have a strategy for dealing with them while minimising the risks.
>>164640838
Their attacks are NOT random.
If you embark close enough to a werebeast lair, they can randomly wander on to your map at any time, just like any and all creatures that make lairs and wander around. Night trolls are the sole exception to this rule, presumably because they follow different lair rules than everything else.
Spring year 2 is not soon enough to meet the requirements for a randomly generated werebeast attack. If they're attacking that soon, it's because you embarked too close to one.
>>164642346
Always remember: you could have been forced to deal with night trolls and bogeymen in fort mode, werebeasts by comparison are fun!
Also, the uh, settings that I was screwing with to try and get all sorts of crazy shit happening with inter-site conflicts seemed to be more effective than hitting a starter plant pokemon with a fucking nuke.
Noticed several wars going on with one of the fortress making "deep" dwarf civs that ended up pulling in the city making "hill" dwarf citizens at times so I checked the embark screen and scrolled up towards the top of the map there, I didn't actually intend for this and only have barely functional fort mode nobles at the moment since they're very hard to make work right with custom positions. That river intersection there, and another one with the same 2x War+3x Towers, are 2x2 with three 0 flatness tiles and one maximum cliff tile, with more options for larger ones. May have to check around in that one after I get my murderloli run done.
>>164643135
You can always just embark on top of a night troll lair if you want some in fort mode.
Of course all you have to do is lock their door on them and they can't escape, since they're only T1 building destroyers.

by then, you should have had plenty of time to dig a hole in the ground, where you can burrow your dwarves.
you should also have had plenty of time to train a militia squad with decent weapon and shield skills. no legendaries, perhaps, but still strong enough to take on a werebeast.
>>164652469
That has nothing to do with the requirements for a werebeast attack.

>>164652659
>werebeasts can attack at any time
After their population and wealth requirements have been met, or if you embark too close to a lair and they stumble across your fortress prematurely(which also happens with semi-mega and megabeasts).
>>164652815
Might not be for years but I imagine Toady will get around to it at some point.
>>164652945
The wiki doesn't say anything about requirements for werebeasts, so it is to be assumed that they can appear at any time.
But like I said, this isn't a problem. It's just an incentive to get your militia up and running early on.

it will be useful when alchemy gets implemented.
certain receipts will require certain elements, which you can get need by gathering and processing certain minerals or plants.
>>164655053
There are ways to do that without modeling chemistry, electron orbits and crystalline structures.
>>164655226
But by modeling them, we become able to generalise a lot of processes in the game, which is exactly what Toady wants to do.
It means less preadded bloat and more original content that is generated according to a set of rules.

Do you think that in predator-prey models (or any other, unless expressly stated it should be an autistic model) I or anyone ever delved into the deep psychology of predators, how the sunlight glare can affect their hunting skills or how much blood their hearts pump while running? Of course not, you get the same results using a shorter statistical path of how much area a hypothetical individual can cover per amount of simulation time or steps and what is the chance of catching a prey. Do you think anyone on earth ever cares for how digestive acids behave when doing that? Nope, you just set a ratio for energy and mass exchange.

Im glad to tell you that light, lightnings and ilumination in general are planned features confirmed by Toady
As for me, there are just too many things
Some months ago I started taking a deeper interest in the game and the way it can evolve, and I started making my own suggestion files, or just noting every idea that I deemed interesting enough and DF-like enough (you know, not steampunk stuff, only DF-like stuff)
Since then I have cropped 288 pics by myself, and written about 88 suggestions (in the first file I checked)
I guess what I cant really say what I want more, but a good example would be
>85-again, talking about interaction with the world, I liked the idea that you could sit on a chair/bench, or at a bridge's lateral part (some drawfag) and just let time pass naturally. Not only its relaxing and lets you see how things work, but would be helpful or even mandatory in situations that require waiting or observing something. Letting big ammounts of time be passes by smashing '.' is dumb as fuck

What are some fun things you guys found in Legends more recently?
Are cats naturally good at climbing? I noticed that a stray kitten in my previous fortress was marked as a legendary climber.

a 300 year old hydra with hundreds of kills and multiple civilizations to its name

>>164673228
They're legendary climbers from birth.
I spent the last few hours stripping a roaming goblin army naked. After I managed to get away (I punched the shit out of them until they all fell unconscious then jumped away) I sold all the armor and weapons to a nearby town. I can't even imaging how they would have to explain that to their group leader.
>>164673418
If that rhino is still alive you gotta claim his horn and use it as a legendary knife.
>>164676663
That's the thing
The Rhino didn't even get a name for it

>>164697575
Actually, it's more like this:
>God tier
Dorfs. They have the most advanced technology, as only they know how to produce steel. They also have the highest degree of social complexity within their society: just look at all their entity positions, and the interralationships between those positions. They have a well functioning buerocracy, and all trade is controlled by the state.
Dwarves are no doubt the strongest race in the game.
>Top tier
Gobbos. They are nowhere as technologically advanced as the dwarves, but there are other impressive feature to their society. They posses the power and knowledge to erect monumental towers, and just like the dwarves, they dig their homes out of the earth itself. They are basically the more civilised and less hypocritical cousin of the elves.
To be fair, I never considered the gobbos my enemy. I see them more as rivals, because out of the major races, they really are the only ones who can challenge the mighty dwarf. The dwarves and the goblins are the only two power players in the world of DF.
>Shit tier
Elves. Like orangutangs, they build primitive nests in the treetops by twinning the branches together. Like the subterranean tribes, they are only capable of carving their tools out of wood, and they have the poor taste to claim to do this through some kind of nature loving magic.
The only redeeming trait of elven society is the relatively high social complexity. Their richness of noble positions is second only to the dwarves.
>Below shit
Humans. They possess the same technology as the goblins, but they don't put it to decent use. Most of their settlements are sprawling, miserable shanty towns. In the vast majority of the shacks in which they make their living, the floor is just dirt.
They don't have the complex society of the dwarven and elven societies, but instead a primitive feudal system where the only positions are the "law giver", the "general" and the lesser lords.
>>164699930

>>164702320
True, the chaos should be fun too.
Where the game previously formed a single set of reputations for one historical figure, people can now give different answers for the true historical figure and each identity, as well as what they think on sight (which may or may not involve any names -- they keep track of which identities they associate with the physical appearance).

I had one a while ago. She was killed by a weregila monster, who also killed a kobold thief before getting killed by a caravan guard.
None of them even set foot inside my fortress.
There were an additional 6 invaders I've already killed. This is the biggest invasion force I've seen. my Military is only 16 dwarfs in bronze gear (I have no iron, just copper and tin, and silver).
I guess no caravans for me until I figure this shit out.
I've made a hacked-up version of the DF rendering and input code ("g_src") that runs a websocket server, so that multiple users can connect to the same instance of the game over the internet.
My plan right now is to use this to build a multiplayer succession-style server. One player runs the fortress at a time, and every 10 or 15 minutes, another player takes over. Players who are waiting for their turn can watch the current player's progress in real time, and it will have a chat system so you can discuss plans for the fortress (or complain about how the current player is doing everything wrong).
Does that sound like it would be fun?

The best is when you toss one as another beside you starts an attack, so you're able to hold them in place when they try to jump out of the way.
Sometimes you're able to toss them from either side into each other, which is also amazing.

Okay what the fuck just happened. I got absolutely murdered in that necro tower (30+ pages of being punched in the head before I suffocated to death). I got taken out to the main menu and then had the option to continue playing, I just assumed I could go back into legends mode to look up some more shit. But it let me load back into the actual game. I didn't look at the name but I guessed it would just show me my dead character and 'You are deceased' again and I'd have to quit again.
But it didn't.

>>164729410
>>164730163
>>164745504
I wasn't aware of DFterm and the others, but it makes sense someone would have tried this already. WebFort even has a queuing system just like the one I proposed.
I think the architecture I'm using gives more control over the game loop than in DFhack/WebFort/etc., and will make it possible to implement better multiplayer features. The modified g_src has total control over rendering and input, so it should be possible to do some neat tricks by sending fake inputs and only rendering certain frames. For example, I think it can give two players two independent views of the game world, by rendering a frame for Player 1, sending fake inputs to move the camera to Player 2's position, and rendering a separate frame for Player 2. To the players, it looks like they each have an independent camera control, while from DF's perspective, there is only one camera which is moving back and forth very quickly. Dealing with menus would be more complicated (it would need to know what sequence of inputs will close Player 1's menus and open Player 2's), but it should be possible with the same principle.
Are some fortresses genuinely impossible to get into? I'm standing right where one should be (my companion is saying it's just to the north, or just south and changing this often if I move just a few tiles). I wanna get inside because it seems cool as shit, go absolutely destroyed by a bronze colossus (who appears to have vanished) and about 30 necromancers took it over.
>>164773293
Don't listen to anybody, not even yourself
>>164774819
I know for a fact that there are fortresses from where its impossible to get out
>>164775089
Really rare.
However, there used to be a bug that caused staircases in fortresses to disappear when you slept, making some sections isolated and potentially trapping the player. I don't know if this has been fixed.
BTW, I don't know if anyone lese remembers, but Toady said that he has already made the fortresses easier to navigate for the upcoming release. Basically, the wider corridors will connect to the central rampway, meaning that you can basically follow the widest path to get out into the open quicker.

>>164782561

>>164774819
There are three types of dwarven sites.
Hillocks are the little towns outside of the mountains.
Fortresses are the big cities in the mountains.
And Mountain Halls are Fortresses with no surface entrance.
Mountain Halls are far more common than Fortresses because dwarves like to spread using their underground roads.
>>164747605
Doesn't cutting glass make a craft from it?
>>164787914
It makes a cheap cut gem, a large gem or a craft, all at random.

That's just called being absolutely blind drunk anon.
If a workshop had stockpile links, and it gets claimed, does that fuck up the ability for the mood'd dwarf to get the materials required for his artefact?
>>164788382
You need to enter from a fortress and follow the roads. If that's not an option, then there's no way to access the hall except hours and hours and hours and hours of slow travel. Assuming the halls are even connected to any of the other underground entrances in your world.
what the fuck man
>>164789981

Meanwhile my crossbowman companion has spent the last few hours telling me how a Goblin civilization is going to war with his civ over their treatment of plants, he said this like 30 times. He said it again, but this time it's over their use of TORTURE.
So I reclaimed a fortress that had been destroyed by an FB in worldgen. Before starting playing, I looked up the history of the world, including this fort, so I had a good understanding of what had happened.
Basically, the fort was very young, and didn't have any tavern or library or anything like.
The funny thing is, all my artifacts so far seem to retell the story of the fort and how it was destroyed.
The first artifact, a pig tail cape, has an image of a noble assuming her seat here back in 52.
The second artifact, a glass ring, has an image of the FB destroying the fortress in 54.
The third artifact, a weapon rack, has an image of the FB killing one of the dorfs.
the current year is 125, by the way.
>>164790351
The torture is just a footnote really. The plant thing is WAY more important.
>>164790573

>>164806219
Read the wiki. A lot.
Get mad when you lose forts to stupid shit like forgetting to build a corner on a wall, or accidentally cooking away all your drink and plants and having no water sources on the map.
I suggest that every fort, you try to focus on getting one specific industry running. Start with the simpler and more important ones like alcohol, fishing, carpentry and masonry. Then move onto the more complex but vital ones like metalworking, military, textiles and cooking.
And then once you've got all those down, figure out the esoteric bullshit like glassmaking, beekeeping, soap, and engineering projects like pump stacks, silk farms and drowning chambers.
You'll probably also want to learn adventure mode and play a couple adventurers of different weapon types once you've got a basic grasp of military. Adventure mode gives you a really good feel for how combat works in this game, and really helps understand what weapons are good for what.Axes and swords are almost always the best, though joint damage definitely helped even the gap with blunt weapons.
>>164802167
maybe try using reveal in dfhack and using look to span z levels to find the entrance. thats what i tried doing with a giant lair i couldn't find.
every time i come back to playing i end up trying to train some kind of large animal for war but get burned out before i ever start breeding enough of them. elephants take so god damn long to breed.
I'm sure someone has bred giant elephants for war by now.
>>164802695
I feel like the sex mod shouldn't take off the clothes, you should have to do that manually. It'd be weird if you go to rape an elf and both of you just fall out of your clothes.
Plus, it'd be funny as hell if people forgot to take off an article of clothing, and had an accident on said article of clothing.
>>164808240
Most of all: take screenshots, you can delete stuff later if it isn't interesting, but you can't decide later that you would like to have a shot of something once it's gone.
The stories and how things happen is important, whether you fuck up or not.
Plus you'll find things that you thought were mildly interesting or unusual and later discover how cool and/or rare it was.

These guys wandered into my cage traps a few seasons back and have been shitting out babies at the speed of light ever since.
I don't want to butcher them because rhinos are my favorite animal and I am weak and can't bear the thought of harming fictional creatures, but at the same time they're obliterating my grass at the speed of light and I have to rotate them through several pastures every season. I've already got a squad of 6 dwarves who are legendary+5 in nearly every relevant military skill thanks to 5 years of sparring, so the rhinos aren't any use in fortress defense, and they have no other use outside of butchering, but I still can't bring myself to do it.
I've been dicking around with the hauling menu recently and figured I'd branch out to minecarts. I watched some youtube tutorials and consulted the /dfg/ image guide, but wanted to get some stuff cleared up with you guys.
>Do minecarts need their hauling routes curved around turns in the track, or do dwarves know to guide the cart along the track regardless of the route?
>If a hauling route has several stops in it, will the dwarves loop back to the first stop command in the hauling route, or do they go backwards through the list with opposite directions?
>Do you really need track stops for guided minecart systems, or are they only important for automated dumping into ore passes and slowing moving carts?
>Do you need to assign a minecart to a stockpile in order for dwarves to fill the cart with designated materials, or will they just drop shit off in the cart?

I think they'll guide it along a valid track or carry it if the track isn't valid anymore, you can set the stops to be ordered as I recall, don't have them ride long routes, they have no sense of self preservation and will bounce themselves off a wall, slide face first to a halt, go back, pick up the cart, haul it up track a bit, and take off again.Or give them armor before having them ride it.
You need to assign the cart to the route with the stop accepting the relevant materials.
I tried to set up a computerized entrance route which would bounce carts around a goblin grinder and then redirect carts when a citizen walked through.I forgot to account for the weirdness of build order in the timing doors are opened and plates are activated, think I lost three dwarves who were trying to recover the other one's socks before I ordered a full lockdown burrow alert.
I also set up a system to automatically haul ballista arrows from the workshop to the welcome mat as they were made/tossed in the cart.
>>164811291
She probably saw a puddle out of the corner of her eye, and was overcome by terror(Like all dwarves, water triggers her PTSD from a possible future where she may have drowned), dropping the object she was hauling and her baby. The baby, like all dwarves, then made a mad dash toward the nearest source of certain death. In this case, it was the puddle. Her motherly instincts kicked in as soon as she overcame her panic attack, and she began to seek her infant. Unfortunately, the infant was in the puddle, triggering another panic attack followed by a resolution to allow the child to drown rather than take another step toward her potential watery grave.
>>164812979
Civilian dwarves don't panic and drop everything when manning siege weapons anymore?
>>164813336
Oh they definitely did, the main kills were from the ones closer to the staircase I was using to lure the army in there, they'd see a gob or troll round the corner and fire then run, by that time the outer ones would usually be getting back to their ballista and occasionally chuck a bolt at the ones trying to flee back out, or once in a while point blank nail one as it walked in front of them.
In the end the ballista welcome mat only claimed a handful of enemies, the webshooting eyeless pig titan that arrived shortly after the siege killed most of the rest, and the final group of trolls/goblins and the spiderpig were all lured into GOBLIN SNOWCONE and I was able to encase the whole chunk of them (the bridge to the south releases pressurized water from the underground part, the area above the ice was dug out to expose it to freezing glacier sky, the other bridges were used to trap them inside while the trolls worked on the bait doors) with a pair of lever pull orders and a continuous pump operation to keep the pressure high enough to instantly flood the killzone when the bridge dropped.

What is that, Planepacked: the Book?
can you see iron ore on the prospect screen at embark or just the layers that it resides in?
underground masterrace
My map has no magma so I've dug down to the magma sea, but all the good ores are up top. Should I dick around with pump stacks or just set up some garbage chute ore passes?
>>164828121
You can add to existing books with the right reactions. :D
>>164830275
I like your little zoo setup with the raised bridges near the entrance.
Why not set your dwarves up in little condos along the cavern walls?
>>164830941
Minecart impulse ramps are a fun challenge to set up, but a pumpstack is also a worthwhile project.
Tip: after you get everything dug out, designate the stack from the bottom up, then suspend all but the top and let them build it top down, this order influences how fluid transport calculations are handled in a way that means the instant an output tile is filled the input above is already trying to draw from it, so fluid literally teleports up the stack as long as it is operative.
>>164831164
Already maxed out on rooms I'll need, I'll probably expand out there once I'm done clearing the area (that huge ass space was all rocks), I keep getting interrupted by FBs though hence the need for the zoo. I caught another one since that screenshot.
>>164831371
>this order influences how fluid transport calculations are handled in a way that means the instant an output tile is filled the input above is already trying to draw from it, so fluid literally teleports up the stack as long as it is operative.
I had no idea build order influenced liquid flow. Is the designation order the reason why my mist generator keeps dropping 7/7 water tiles on my dwarf's heads while they eat?
>>164831392
Have you tried catching Jabberers? They've got the trainable tag in the raws. I managed to catch one on an old fort but I accidentally let the fucker loose in my stockpiles and had to put him down.
>>164831840
Probably at some point
>>164831664
Yeah, doing it in certain ways will change it.
Top down designation, top down build should be regular flow, as a tile fills up it starts to be available to move through the pump.
Bottom up designation, bottom up build seems to make the pumps spend extra time waiting for fluid to be available.
Top down designation, bottom up building should end up with the pumps at either end starving each other due to being out of sync.
Bottom up designation, top down building makes each pump "ready" to draw from the output of the pump below as soon as the lower pump registers having moved fluid.
So you go from having like, 1~5 ticks per transfer "normal" pumping, 5~10 ticks per transfer with the worst case orders, and 0~1 ticks per transfer with the bottom up/top down order, so you won't actually see much if any fluid sitting on the input/output tiles, only the bottom one drawing and top one flooding.

I want to host a Dwarf Fortress tabletop campaign so I decided to draw a map because I've never generated a good world in DF.
But I don't really know how to place biomes on the continent I drew so could someone mark them in paint for me or something?
I want the southern island to be a jungle kind of, and the strip of land above the island to be dry/desert.

i generated a world and used it as the base for a dungeon crawl classics game which worked out pretty well. the legends viewer showed me things like the local civs which i took npcs from changing the names a bit so they didn't sound too silly. I took the local deities as what the priests and wizards worship as gods and patrons which was pretty painless. The campaign really writes itself with legends viewer. Things such as to the north is an island populated by 3 minotaurs, so I came up with them crashing onto the island labyrinth on the way to another mission. I've run two campaigns from the world, the first game one coast line was overrun by amphibian men so i came up with an invasion masterminded by the 1 elf and human outcasts among them.

Just do whatever you want dude.
You don't really need any performers, since even ordinary guests will start performances. Maybe the pros give stronger positive thoughts, but I don't think there's a big difference.
Personally, I just accept performers because it's interesting to have them around. They often have interesting roles in the history of the world. Some of them are former soldiers, and when they've finally become full fledged citizens, they might make useful soldiers. Also, I like to accept many performers of different races to get that comfy multiculti feel.
From a practical standpoint, there isn't really any reason to accept the performers, so feel free to say no to them if you don't want them.

You can give megabeasts and semimegas and whatnot the [POWER] tag and they'll take over sites, I do it because of the chaos it causes and how amusing it is having dragons leading armies of goblins to go murder a horde of elves led by a minotaur.

>>164857908
Yeah, I do. I play dwarf fortress with a square tileset and diagonal walls. I build my forts like a work of art, a deathtrap for goblins and elves. The last thing they see is the enormity and graciousness my dwarves composed. a city carved of stone and ore and gems, smoothed and engraved in a work beyond quality. They are mesmerized in their last moments by the colossal walls, the titanic pillars, the towers and their fortifications. They are hypnotized by the otherworldly engravings of forks, goats, engravings and gods, a last moment of respite between life and death. In its guts, a symmetrical wonder produces all kinds of crafts like clockwork, the peak of dwarven industry. My dwarves walk their halls appreciating great statues, smooth, straight corridors in a multitude of angles. They live in grandness, my king experiences life like a god on earth. My soldiers are the best of the best, equipped with the best there is, to the point where having defenses is pointless. A superb life in a superb home, they may choose how to die, by alcohol or fist fights, as they will be sent to the afterlife in a marvelous tomb.
What do you have, now? You arrive in what we can't even call an embark, most likely flat or near hills, and then proceed to dig a hole in the dirt. That hole later becomes an aberration of narrow corridors, nonsensical paths and several floors (in the dirt) connect by stairs from all over your "fortress". Your chaotic abortion cannot be called a fortress, it's closer to an anthill than anything else. Your dwarves live in the mud, spreading disease, sharing their rooms with animals and the like. You shove your royalty in a tasteless room, your citizens in claustrophobic closets. You play this game as if you're a hobbit, a disgusting midget prone to peace and weakness. Your excuse is "it's what toady intended', but that's a lie. Keep on with your silly jokes, while I'm enjoying my gargantuan kingdom.
Enjoy your mud hole. You are pathetic.

Well to get a modern ddr4 motherboard you're kinda limited to more expensive cpus, with a 480 and all that you're already at $860, this includes an aftermarket cooler and an Z chipset (overclocking) motherboard so if you want to overclock in the future for DF you can, but that price doesn't include hard drives, a 1tb harddrive will cost an extra $50 or so, for an ssd as a boot drive that'd also be another $50 or so. To be clear, you know how to pirate windows, if you're using windows, yes? If not I'd suggest looking that up, it's extremely simple. If you use linux then great.
Note that these prices on harddrives and ssds are based on 3 years ago, I haven't checked in a loooong time.
The case you chose unfortunately is very small and limits the psu to expensive fully modular versions and a more expensive low profile aftermarket cooler, as well as limits the motherboard size. If you went with a different case such as the define series from fractal design or if you want to go cheaper (I'd somewhat recommend that as cases aren't that important despite me spending a lot on mine) the core series. It'd severly open up options for cheaper motherboards and psus, despite looking a lot uglier. I own both the define r4 and the core 1000 and I love both, though the define's power button being on top is a negative if you own cats like I do.

Alrighty if you really want that case it does jack up the price a lot. If you can't wait I'd suggest going with what >>164909382 suggests but it's up to you. That case doesn't have 3.5" hard drive slots so that jacks the price even farther up than I thought.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fZQZqk
You could definitely make this cheaper, even keeping the case and ram and all that, by going with a non-z mb and a lower quality cooler, but that's up to you. You could probably shave $50 off of it by doing that. Maybe $150-$200 off by changing the case. It's up to you.
>>164909382
>https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GxcY2R
Well no the 480 is AMD's near top tier. A 1070 would be a more apt comparison than a 1060. With a 1070 being a bit better unfortunately costing over $100 more. That's the one thing AMD gpus have an advantage on, price per dollar in the mid range. Since we're building this for df you'd also want to get higher speed ram and a better motherboard for bus speed. And as he said he wants to play more than just DF 8gb would be better as modern games require that much these days and the cpu is only 2 core, many games these days refuse to be played with cpus with less than 4 cores. This would be great for things like CS:GO, LoL, etc and older games (anything before late 2015), but not for modern games.
>>164912039
fucking thank you. oh my god. how can i repay?
>>164912412
Plei more DF and I will be happy.
Also taking a second look at it I'd suggest a different HDD, it's not that that one is bad per se it's just really slow, 5400rpm is snail pace. A seagate 1tb 2.5" one might be better.
>don't save for 7 hours
>game crashes
Time to retire that fort
>>164912412
Also as an update, I will fully admit I was wrong about :
>Well no the 480 is AMD's near top tier. A 1070 would be a more apt comparison than a 1060.
It appears what >>164909382 said is right in that the 1060 performs equal to or better than the 480, I'm not particularly caught up with the past 2-3 years of tech development so I wasn't aware, and I apologize. Although the 480 is a bit cheaper.
Saging because it's a minor correction and no need to bump for that
Is there any way to fix this, or do I just have to restart the game?
>>164915484
What's the problem?
>>164915914
its pretty apparant that his tileset broke dude.
So I started an animalman adventurer and have noticed two things: My swimming will not go up no matter how much I train it, and I have no option to spit.
Is this because of me being an animal man, or is there something fundamentally wrong with my game files?
>>164914664
>not enabling seasonal autosaves
You did it to yourself.
>>164916530
Most animal men can swim by default, except for arachnid/bug men who can't swim at all. No clue about spitting though.

There's a tool out there called LAA. I had the same problem. Used the tool on the dwarffortress.exe and it fixed it. Worth a shot
How do I mod fortress mode to play as a goblin CIV? Complete noob here
>>164912039
I thought the 490 X or some shit was top end, but yeah, pcpartpicker is the shizzy.
>>164915462
Yar, they're pretty similar but you get the idea.
>>164917261
It really is.
>>164916530
Creatures with innate skill in something cannot train to be better at it. Animalmen have innate swimming skill, so you're stuck being slow as fuck in water.
Spitting is an interaction, and was only added to the main races since it was added after animalmen were and adding it to each animal man would take a century and be almost completely pointless.
>>164918379
Could probably add it to the creature variation.
>>164918102
All it takes is one tag under ENTITY_EVIL to be able to embark as goblins.
To actually make their civ playable and enjoyable takes a lot more work, and as far as I know is not entirely possible, since a lot of their issues are hardcoded, like the fact that they are always at war with everyone regardless of an active conflict and the fact that they cannot trade.
You could also just copy-paste ENTITY_MOUNTAIN, change the name and then change the race to goblins. It would give you an evil goblin civ and a dwarfaboo goblin civ that is effectively identical to dwarves, though I get the feeling that that's not what you want.
>>164918634
I actually have no idea how to tag and such, is there a wiki link?
All I really want to do is make goblins playable, remove ale dependency and make them more cruel/not get scared by corpses, be edgyb etc and get sieged more often, like at 50 pop instead of the 80 and seasonally. Probably not make them immortal as that's too easy and I never use steel anyways.
What self restrictions should I do as goblins if I can't tag it?

I didn't mean to kill her either. I feel awful about taking her life. I was just going to mangle every inch of her body beyond recognition as punishment for the crime of raising all my combat skills to legendary. Her death was an unintended accident.

are machine driven pumps more powerful than manual ones?
I'm trying to pierce an aquifer, but the square on the far side of my pump never drops below 3, making it impossible to wall off.
Didn't bring stone, embark side looked like it had 2/3rds of the ground aquifer free, so if I'm screwed i might as well restart now instead of wasting time.
