Read the General problems FAQ before asking questions. If you still need help, post your specs (speccy screenshot), OS, emulator version number and details of what's wrong.

Please contribute to the wiki if you discover any inaccuracies or have relevant information to append.

READ THE WIKI BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE:
>Where do I get games
OR
>What is the best emulator for...

Check out the wiki for the emulator you're using if you run into trouble, there may be a solution there too, often including recommendations for optimal game settings.

Remember to submit bug reports or shit won't get fixed.

OK. So that's something to do with the format your memory card is in, and I can't remember how to fix that. Someone else might be able to help you there. It's something to do with shared memcards I think. That or you have to rename the memcard to match the .m3u.

Yeah Retroarch is pretty stable overall if you don't go around adding conflicting parameters on your cfg files and shit like that. Sure it has it's quirks and weird shit every now and then but that's to be expected from software that works on loads of platforms and offers shitloads more features than other regular emulators

You are kind of fucked in terms of android emulation. You either have to deal with payware shit or spyware shit. I used some chink shit emulator that wanted me to install some other software to run it. Went through all the hassle to install and set it up but the damn thing didn't even run Rayman or Chaos Rings.
Nox might be your best bet but don't touch it if you get some warnings from something like Malwarebytes.

All android emulators are garbage pretty much, between those that erase each others, those that implode randomly, those that are stuffed with adware and those that plain run like shit or have missing features.

>>
>>164577771
>>Are you this anon?
Nope, but I realize that I didn't try Nox either so it might be good.
What I can tell you though.

Andy / Bluestacks / Droid4X are all garbage, all crapped out randomly after a while, never seen anything like that, everytime I booted them they would either crash or run insanely slowly until they crashed, Andy in particular seems to simply not want to work anymore on my computer I can't even install it again without it crashing during install.

Windroy(e) / Xamarin / DuOS / Chrome / Astoria are laughably bad although Chrome has the merit of being easy to get rid off.
>>

Zilmar has an annoying obsession with shitty hardware that is holding PJ64 back. He's completely unwilling to improve aspects of PJ64 if doing so would raise the system requirements. That wouldn't be the case if Gonetz bothered to fix all the regressions.. Doesn't help that it used glN64 which is easily worse than both Jabo's Video and Glide64. Basing a plugin off of Glide64 is much better than basing a plugin off of glN64..

PCSX2 is good, considering the limitations imposed by the retarded architecture (seriously, nonstandard floating point?), complexity of the project, and lack of man hours. This is 75% incorrect. Glide64 shits itself trying to emulate framebuffer to ram. It is significantly slower than GLideN64.

Luigiblood won't even package Pj64 with latest GLideN64 because of regressions. It still puzzles me how Gonetz leaves games broken that worked fine in Glide64. I mean didn't he write that plugin? He should already know how to improve some of those games..

>Glide64 shits itself trying to emulate framebuffer to ram. It is significantly slower than GLideN64.
What game is this a problem in? I don't see an issue with fb performance on my end. It does slow down performance, but I can still run full speed. GLideN64's fb performance isn't that great. I only see a big difference compared to Glide64 if I enable async, which is less accurate.
>>
>>164622892
>Luigiblood won't even package Pj64 with latest GLideN64 because of regressions.
Oh, those. Yea, it's because the plugin is in the middle of a massive texture/framebuffer overhaul. It breaks the 64DD games because those all rely on Aux FB to RAM and stuff like that. It'll be fixed soon, I imagine. Purplemarshmallow also recently discovered why PAL games tend to have wrong FB ratios. https://github.com/gonetz/GLideN64/issues/375#issuecomment-270173884

It's pretty normal for an actively developed plugin to break things on occasion.

>It still puzzles me how Gonetz leaves games broken that worked fine in Glide64. I mean didn't he write that plugin? He should already know how to improve some of those games..

They usually didn't work fine in Glide64. Resident Evil 2 is completely fucked with Glide64, for example. It "worked", but it worked wrong. There's a guy doing rewrites of the HLE ucodes, too, which is cool. He's already fixed a few broken ucodes, and is considering stuff like Turok dynamic lighting down the road.
>It does slow down performance, but I can still run full speed.
Perfect Dark in High Resolution mode runs at full speed for you with Glide64?
> I only see a big difference compared to Glide64 if I enable async, which is less accurate.
Async is the default for a reason. It has zero negative effects for most games while offering a massive speed boost. Syncing FB copies is fucking insanity. It completely stalls the CPU while it waits for 20-60 frames to be copied to RAM every second.

My problem is that he leaves things broken for a long time. Instead of adding new features, he needs to spend more time on fixing regressions. It should not be difficult to fix something that used to work, hence why i think it should be high priority. How hard would it be for him to review Glide64 and figure out why it works better in some game? He wrote the code himself, afaik...

>They usually didn't work fine in Glide64. Resident Evil 2 is completely fucked with Glide64, for example. It "worked", but it worked wrong. I think it's great that there's more contributors now, but I still think that you're being a little too optimistic. I'm not going to be excited until they HLE games that are currently LLE-only.

>Perfect Dark in High Resolution mode runs at full speed for you with Glide64?
I have not tested that game yet. What resolution do you play on? I usually just do 2x res for games since I like to multitask and rarely play in full screen.

>Async is the default for a reason. It has zero negative effects for most games while offering a massive speed boost. Syncing FB copies is fucking insanity. It completely stalls the CPU while it waits for 20-60 frames to be copied to RAM every second.
It's fine if you don't mind being 1 or more frames behind. I don't think Sync FB is a problem unless you're playing on super hi-res in a 60 fps game. Then again, maybe GLideN64 needs to be optimised more.
>>

> I don't think Sync FB is a problem unless you're playing on super hi-res in a 60 fps game.

On modern GPUs and mobos, shouldn't be a problem at all in native n64 res. I don't get why LLE plugins just don't rasterize as native res and then upscale the final render target.

I'm referring to the game's internal high resolution mode. Raises framebuffer size to 640x222 and also influences mipmapping behavior.
>It's fine if you don't mind being 1 or more frames behind. I don't think Sync FB is a problem unless you're playing on super hi-res in a 60 fps game. Then again, maybe GLideN64 needs to be optimised more.
What do you mean "behind". GLideN64 doesn't normally render the frames being copied (at native resolution, mind you) to ram. They're used for other purposes.
>On modern GPUs and mobos, shouldn't be a problem at all in native n64 res.
Which ranges from 320x240 to 640x480. And you also have to copy auxiliary buffers for full accuracy, and the N64 is capable of creating an infinite number of these.
>>
>>164630312
>What do you mean "behind". GLideN64 doesn't normally render the frames being copied (at native resolution, mind you) to ram. They're used for other purposes.
In async mode, there's no guarantee that it will be copied before the frame ends, so you could be left with previous data for that frame.

>I'm referring to the game's internal high resolution mode. Raises framebuffer size to 640x222 and also influences mipmapping behavior.
I know but also the resolution you play on matters. In a game that has native res of 320 x 240, it's going to be much slower if you play on 3x res as opposed to 2x or 1x.
>>
>>164631148
Ideally you would copy when the game actually needs a copy, like what happens with those CPU framebuffer extensions, or what Dolphin also does with framebuffer/depthbuffer notification in the core.

That is an issue, but I'm referring to the VRAM to system memory transfer. If you use frame buffer extensions, it will almost certainly not transfer in time for that frame if you used async.
>>
>>164631148
>In async mode, there's no guarantee that it will be copied before the frame ends, so you could be left with previous data for that frame.
It just uses the previous frame, which is only rarely an issue.

No. Unless your PC has a bad GPU, you can crank it up to 4x or more with no speed decrease.

I personally don't like the idea of it using previous frame.

I'm referring to overall performance, like with frame limiter disabled. Never tried 4x, but 3x is fine even on a toaster when using optimized code. Although I have not tested with any high res games yet.

non standard floating point didn't seem to be a problem. a few years back someone on the pcsx2 forum met one of the designers of the ps2 vus, and he said something along the lines of it not being important for a gaming system. I also saw some posts from the guy who wrote microvu saying essentially the same thing.
>>
>>164668175
idk senpai this seems to say otherwise http://wiki.pcsx2.net/index.php/PCSX2_Documentation/Nightmare_on_Floating-Point_Street

maybe what the designer meant is that the differences don't matter for a gaming system because the calculations done are robust against the computational differences?

There's an xml file you can change.
If you ever delete a game off your pc, I think you might have to delete it off here too, but I might be wrong.

Just delete the part I've selected off all the relevant games.
Alternatively you could delete all of the pictures which live in .emulationstation/downloaded_images/gbc

Editing the xml file also lets you put custom descriptions and paths to pictures.

every thing else that wasn't originally bin+cue that was re-saved (wouldn't necessarily call that conversion) won't load in mednafen, so i'm guessing there was something up with the bin+cue save settings since none of them will run under yabause (crash back to menu)

Using Dual Cores in Dolphin is a great way to break games because of how shitty that option is
Same for MTVU in PCSX2
Both PCSX2 and Dolphin don't use dual cores by default because it reduces compatibility. Even then, having great single thread performance doesn't mean you have shit dual core one. Its means the opposite.

I've used it in every game I've run on Dolphin and never had an issue.

>>164740281
>Both PCSX2 and Dolphin don't use dual cores by default because it reduces compatibility.
It is the default in Dolphin, at least when I used it. Also MTVU is for 3+ cores, so I doubt that is a dual core setting but rather an additional setting for people who want to use a third core.

>>

I highly doubt that. It doesn't even support AVX.. Only reason to consider buying the pentium is the price.

I did.
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-G3258-vs-Intel-Core-i5-6600K/2434vs3503

Only reason to get pentiumG 3258 , is if you're on a strict budget and don't need 4 cores/ threads. I'd rather get a 7600k though.
>>
>>164746869
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp%5B%5D=2570&cmp%5B%5D=2267
G3258 has a higher single thread rating than 6600k
That is a major factor when discussing emulator performance.
Hell, the only reason a 6600K is recommended over it is because it won't be a one trick pony and will have general applications.
>>
>>164747729
If that benchmark is legit, then it simply means that PentiumG has better OC potential. I don't think it makes up for the lack of AVX, among other things.

Pentium G certainly has a better price to performance ratio, but you can say the same for AMD vs Intel. Doesn't mean it's not worth paying a premium for higher quality CPUs if you have the money to spare.

What do you mean using different video drivers?
>>
>>164767969
Yeah I think that's down to the default theme's configurations. I did what some theme author recommended and everything feels pretty natural
" V. Tips, Troubleshooting & Performance Boosts:

- It’s very recommended to use the VLC video playback engine to boost up the overall performance of this theme in general.
Open Big Box and go to Options -> Videos. Check the entry "Video Playback Engine", if you are using Windows Media Player change it to VLC.

- If you have performance issues with the Platform views try to switch the transitions. Go to your Big Box Options -> Transitions. Change the transition of "Platforms Video Transition" to "Fade".
When it's still doesn't work flawless enough for you than also change both transitions of "Platform Details Transition" and "Filters Main Image" to one of the two different "Slide" ones.

- If you are using 7.0 Beta-4 or higher than you can improve the performance even more (especially if you experience small lagging issues with the CoverFlow views).
Go to the Big Box Options -> Views -> Wheel Minimum Speed -> reduce the value to 200 or 300 Milliseconds. The CoverFlow and Wheel Views should be a lot more responsive now.

Load a game, then when you change options you can save an override from the quick menu. This will create an override config file in a subfolder in the config dir that will be applied next time you launch that core or game.

While an override is active, save on exit is disabled so if you make changes you have use the save override option on the menu to update the override file.

I think it's silly to automatically assume closed source emudevs are stealing code from open source emulators. Some systems are well documented to the point that you don't need to look at other people's code..

Why copy some mediocre emudev's source code when you can just look at documentation (which is less likely to contain any human errors)?

Dynamic Rate Control, it's audio resampling magic that makes the game sync perfectly to the display.

The shader subsystem is quite well developed and integrated in the graphics pipeline.

The GL and Vulkan graphics drivers try to reduce latency as much as possible by avoiding buffering or flip queues.

The whole "cores as dynamic libs" thing really hasn't been done before with a stable ABI.
>>

>>164799921
It's a problem with RetroArch. libretro already supports shared context but RA only uses one thread.
>>
>>164800104
That's more than likely due to differences between SNES9x, bsnes, and ZSNES in regards to their internal input polling and how they are syncing the various components. ZSNES is very inaccurate but it might get less latency if it skips certain things.

Also, ZSNES uses DirectDraw which has the least latency on older Windows like XP but has shit performance on newer Windows. And ZSNES stutters with vsync on pretty bad.

Vast majority of shit I seen on the Google Store is stolen, maybe due to the extremely low barrier of entry. Steam might go the same way, if not it already had. Plus I think its good to be skeptical of things.

The only one that I actually know of is Hot Wheels Turbo Racing, but it just stands to reason that if you take a nearly perfectly accurate emulator, and a mediocre one and add the same hacks to them, the accurate one is going to still be more accurate.

I'm sure there was a time when mednafen-psx-hw was new where PCSXR was better than it, but we're long past that.

Quick question

Is it possible to enable fullscreen in RetroArch in OSX without making rendering any other monitors unusable?

I have a multimonitor setup and that's what essentially happens, I want to use my secondary monitor for emulation while still using the first one for literally anything else.
>>
>>164852685
Oh wow you got it bad. It works alright even on windows. Currently I have 3 monitors, one just for Kodi, another one just for my Front-end and emulation, and the main one.
Try going to video settings and change fullscreen to windowed fullscreen, that should add a bit more input lag iirc
>>
>>164852953
Nah, already tried that.

The thing is, you can maximize the window to full screen, but that fucks up how the game is displayed and puts it in a corner of the screen instead of centering it, and the only other fix I see is to run it as a maximized window, with the top panel and borders visible. OSX version ain't too good, when they stopped putting nightly builds for it I thought they just gave up on it.

The z-buffer in mednafen hw (gl or vulkan) is only here to emulate the native draw order, it's not used as a 3D draw buffer.

It's what lets you have polygons intersect instead of being only fully on top or below each other. Basically the draw order is resolved per-pixel instead of per-primitive.

Case anyone wants it, I tossed together a prepatched emu setup for the recently translated "EVO - The Theory of Evolution" on the PC-98, the precursor to EVO the Search for Eden on the SNES.

This uses the HDI version of the game so there is no disk swapping.
Also has the original files as well.
Requires no configuration at all not even pointing to the HDI files, is presetup to run from any directory.

Not really. I looked up that AMD thing, apparently it has around Haswell-tier performance. I heard AMD had better IGPs, so kinda tough to decide between AMD and Intel.. If Dolphin's cpu usage isn't too high, then I guess AMD is the better deal since it has a better gfx card. Otherwise get an Intel cpu.

I also am trying to buy a laptop but haven't found a good enough deal. I'm considering getting an i5 7200u. I'm trying to find a good deal on one that comes with an Nvidia card.
